Java 1.4.2 install problem on Win98

Hello!
I have the following problem: I downloaded JRE1.4.2 offline version (j2re-1_4_2_05-windows-i586-p.exe). When I try to install in on Windows98 the machine gets stuck. I see the following message:
I see that all the files are extracted successfully.
"Finishing installation. This may take several minutes" Or something like that. The progress bar does not show any progress. The system hangs completely (even does not react to keyboard). I waited about 20 minutes and then reset the system. I tried installing several times (first uninstall previous version completely throung "Add/Remove programs"). By the way, there are no problems with uninstalling.
Another question - why the JRE installer does not ask me where to install the jre. It installs to "C:\Program files\". I heard that Windows98 complains if the file name contains spaces, but I have no choice :(
Thanks in advance

I wonder that nowbody from Sun would help the users. If JRE didn't work on the Users machines the will not use it!
I have similar problems since I reinstalled win98se.
For me it's impossible to install any JRE Version. I tried 1.3 and 1.4 (different Versions).
Some times I got an error message within the installation process, sometimes not.
Overall Java doesn't work at all!
Would someone from Sun so kind to find out what the heck is going on?

    Hello everyone,
I have been reading the various threads on this issue, but found no answer to my problem:
I am under Lion version 10.7.5 - MacBookPro
I need Java 6 for a program I use for my work.
When I want to install from Java Preferences, i get the following message:
"To open “Java Preferences,” you need to install a Java SE 6 runtime, but you are not connected to the Internet." But I AM connected to the internet.
Accroding to waht I read, I went to the Apple download files and downloaded JavaForOSX.dmg file...
But when I want to install it, I get the message:
"Alert: A newer version of this package is already installed."
When I run terminal java -version
The answer is "No Java runtime present, requesting install."
And thus I am back to where I started...
If you could help that would be incredibly helpful!
    Thanks

    http://java-virtual-machine.net/tech-faq.html
    is a great link.
It claims to have a newer, fixed version of problem DLL, SYMCJIT.DLL . Try that.
The page has an Intel link that is out-of -date. The current Intel link is
    http://support.intel.com/support/processors/pentium4/sb/CS-007990.htm
"CPUID detection for Intel Pentium 4 processor system"
    In two lines, they recommend:
    dir /s SYMCJIT.DLL
    ren SYMCJIT.DLL SYMCJIT.OLD
Of course, Java will run slower, but JIT is a machine-specific concept and this *.DLL was coded to fail if it did not recognize the CPU type. Maybe not a great decision, but there you are.

  • Java In Fedora Core 5 - Install Problems

    Hello guys
    (sorry for my grammar)
i am in a hell now with java and Fedora Core 5
i used to work with java and fc3,fc4
    without problems
in this sentide, when i did the instalation of Linux FC(3-4)
always Fedora install its own Java, for example
    java-1.4.2-gcj-compat-1.4.2.0-40jpp_31rh (for fc4)
if i execute this command "which java" <---
    show this ---> /usr/bin/java
    and
    [XXX@localhost ~]$ java -version (<---- for FC5)
    java version "1.4.2"
gij (GNU libgcj) version 4.1.0 20060304 (Red Hat 4.1.0-3)
Copyright (C) 2006 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
This is free software; see the source for copying conditions. There is NO
warranty; not even for MERCHANTABILITY or FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.
    [Section1@localhost ~]$
so the problem is that (FC3-4-5) never use my jdk1.5_01 already installed (jdk of SUN)
jdk-1_5_0_01-linux-i586.bin,and inclusive, if i put the path bin of java in the .bash_profile always use its own Java1.4.2, so to avoid this problem
, i show the Java's package installed by the FCx and i proceed to uninstall
    (example in FC4)
    rpm -e openoffice.org-javafilter-1.9.104-2
    rpm -e --nodeps gcc-java java
    rpm -e --nodeps gcc-java java-1.4.2
    rpm -e --nodeps gcc-java java-1.4.2-gcj-compat-1.4.2.0-40jpp_31rh
well when i did this uninstall in FC5,sadly this erase for complete the OpenOffice and other Dependences (this behaviour never happened in FC4 - so the OpenOffice still in the OS),now in
FC5 in the uninstall process of packages check ALL dependences related and uninstall too.
i did my own research in google and forums, and the best solution can be this
    http://www.fedorafaq.org/#java
, well i prefer my solution, less complicated and easier, but no work in FC5,
am i doom to follow these steps???
i always work with jdk1.5 update 1 , and the rpm of the other solution is 7, i want to avoid
    versions problems
    so please help me
the most obvious posible solution, is make some configuration, without uninstall
"java version "1.4.2" gij (GNU libgcj)" to work with my path for jdk 1.5 bin
so , how i can do this???, and what happened if i want use other java
version and in need change the path info??
    pls, help me
    thanks for advanced.

I installed Oracle8i on my P4 then when I reboot I get the error "java.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close." even if I click on "don't report" if keeps popping up, anything to do to resolve this?
    Thanks.

    Hello...
i had the same problem. then when i searched oracle documentation, it suggested as follows:
    1. go to your %ORACLE_HOME%\Apache\Apache\conf\httpd.conf
    2. comment out 2 lines that has
    include ....\jserv.conf
    include ....\oracle_apache.conf
so your new line will be:
    #include ....\jserv.conf
    #include ....\oracle_apache.conf
Those lines are at the end of the file.
    3. save the file.
    4. reboot your machine.
that solution works for me.. hope it works for you too.
    GOOD LUCK!

  • Error while running (java -jar orion.jar -install)  Need yr help ?

    Hi,
    I have
    Win 2000 Professional
Oracle 9i release 1and have the Pre-Requisites of MapViewer as follows.
    OC4J_extended (Pre-Requisite for MapViewer)
    XML Parser (Built-in OC4J)
Oracle 9iI don't know whether I have Oracle Client or not which is also pre-requisite for MapViewer ? I think it is built-in with any of the above... most probably with Oracle 9i !!!
I have JDK1.3 as wellI have Oracle9iAS release 1.0.2.2.2a, but I don't want to use it, as I have OC4J standalone...
I want to have the configuration, for using Oracle Spatial/MapViewer.... How can I do that ? I need steps/procedure...
I am having problems in configuring OC4J which I have downloaded. I have unzipped OC4J_Extended in Oracle 9i Database home directory (not in Oracle 9iAS home directory... because I dont have installed iAS)
Its installation guide asks for installation through the following command
java -jar orion.jar -installbut after unzip, I don't get any file named "orion.jar"
What should I do ? Where am wrong ? Should I have to use 9iAS for using MapViewer in any case, if so which version ? I need the heirarchy of steps ?
    I m really stucked !!!
Any help would be highly appreciated.
    Thanx
    Zaaf.

    Hi,
If you are just using OC4J, you should only need to do:
    java -jar oc4j.jar -install
Also note that you should not install oc4j in the oracle_home
directory. If/when you upgrade oracle to apply patches, etc
it will overwrite/cause problems with your oc4j install if you
put it in the oracle_home directory. Put it in any other directory.
The only part of Oracle9iAS needed to run mapviewer is oc4j.
After that is installed, then follow the instructions in the MapViewer
    User's Guide (available on OTN).

Java update cannot be installed on this machine because the directory you have chosen to install is locked.
Please close and browser or application that is using the directory you have chosen for installation. If I hit the 'RETRY' button it continues installation just fine. Any ideas what is causing this error?
As a long shot I removed the JAVAUPDATE=0 but, it still had the same problem.
    TIA

I got the same problem when I was just doing a regular install. After struggling for a few days and following the idea that something else must be using an older JVM, I tried this:
I closed all the non-native windows applications. Some of these were running in the background. The culprit was Google desktop search!!
Once I closed google (by right clicking the icon and exit-ing), the Java installation process went smoothly.
I think this concept would work for you. It is either google desktop or some other application that is running in the background that is using an older JVM.

I too have the same error after an systray auto update came up and I said yes to install v5.0 or something, and said the above locked message, I closed all apps, and pressed retry, didn't install.
I am running winxp with ALL latest windowsupdate patches.
At least microsoft installers don't have any weird problems like this, and I now dont know how to reinstall it, because it appeared from my system tray as an update notification.
