Java 1.6 Update 39 - Mac OS X 10.8.2?

Hello there,
I updated my iMac from OS X 10.6.8 to 10.8.2 a month ago. Recently, I noticed that my Java version (1.6.37) on my computer is outdated, as 1.6.39 has now been released.
My question is: how do I update my Java from 1.6.37 to 1.6.39 on OS X 10.8.2?
Thanks for any and all help,
Mark

If Apple has updated it, there will be an update in Software Update. Here it is if it doesn't: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1573
Apple has stopped building the JRE/JDK themseleves and left it up to Oracle. I don't know how long Apple will continue updated Java 1.6. Oracle has released Java 1.7 JRE/JDKs.

  • HT1338 Software Update is not finding latest release (April 3) of Java 2012 001 Update for Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 on iMac mid-2007 that downloaded automatically on iMac mid-2011

Software Update is not finding latest release (April 3) of Java 2012 001 Update on my iMac mid-2007, but it downloaded it automatically on my iMac mid-2011 yesterday. Both are running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3. When I try to download the update manually from Apple on my older iMac, it downloads okay, but when I try to open the dmg file, I get a warning message saying that opening this update may make your computer LESS secure. Do you want to proceed? (I did not).
Why would Software Update find this update and install it automatically on one iMac and not the other, if they are both running the same version of Mac OS X Lion? I checked the installed software list on my old iMac and the Java update does not appear there. Why would this update make my old iMac less secure?

Recall that Java is not installed as part of Lion.
You have to install it (and are asked if you want to) when you first try to run some java stuff.
Is it possible that the iMac 2007 does not have Java yet?
Try this: open Terminal (from Utilities) and type java -version (exactly like that, with the space before the hyphen).
    What do you get?
Consistent with this theory is that the dmg thing gave you the warning - installing java might make your machine less secure because java is a means for bad guys to try to do bad things to your computer.

    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and
               terms apply.
Actually, you cannot download Snow Leopard. You downloaded a Snow Leopard updater.

In Snow Leopard you update Java from Software Update (in the Apple menu). You can check your version by opening Terminal and typing
    java -version
(don't get creative and type anything else)
    The latest version is 1.6.0_65.

  • I just updated my Mac OSX to Yosemite. I'm using PS5.1 extended. I've dl'd and installed the Java update, as recommended, but Photoshop still refuses to open. HELP!

I just updated my Mac OS to Yosemite. Every other program is working fine, but not Photoshop. I've tried everything mentioned in the forums, including updating the JAVA program, a restart and still PS will not open, giving me a "An unexpected and unrecoverable problem has just occurred. Photoshop will now exit." warning.  HELP! I rely very heavily on this program and my attempts to obtain help from Adobe have been utterly futile.

Reinstall Photoshop CS5 to replace the files damaged by the MacOS 10.10 installer.

  • Apple releases Java update for Mac OS X Tiger

Apple released J2SE 5.0 Release 4 on Tuesday, an update for Mac OS X 10.4.5 Tiger users. According to notes provided with the update the release delivers improved reliability and compatibility for the Java 2 Platform Standard Edition 5.0. With today's release J2SE 5.0 becomes the preferred Java version, superseding Java 1.4.2. Apple notes that Java 1.4.2 is still installed on the machine, but applications will run with J2SE 5.0 unless they specifically request Java 1.4.2. The update is available as a download from Apple's Web site
or via the Software Update mechanism in Mac OS X.

    rezala,
You should be able to get round the issue altogether without the legacy version (and its security implications), by following this:
    http://oliverdowling.com.au/2014/03/28/java-se-8-on-mac-os-x/
It is even more thoroughly described in this thread, see post #3 on by gator soup:

I just updated my Mac to the new op system and when I tried to open my Ai it gave me this message, "To open "Adove Illustrator CS5.1 you need to install the legacy java SE 6 runtime." I updated my Java to 8 and it still won't open. I tried to update my Ai to 11...it won't update.

    Steven,
The right way/order is to update the OP, then reinstall the applications.
    For the Java SE,
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1572
Some have found that the page may turn up blank to start with, so it may be necessary to reload the page.
Others have found that it may depend on browser. Specifically, a switch from Safari has solved it in one case.

Question typed in subject space.  Sorry!

    Hi there Amy,
You may want to take a look at the article titled "Troubleshooting Mac OS X installation and software updates (Mac OS X v10.6 and earlier)"
There is a specific section that includes this information:
Software Updates for Mac OS X and Apple applications for Mac OS X are often available in different ways:
    Software Update preferences
    Standalone installer from Apple Downloads.
Try getting the software from a different source, or download it again.
    Hope that helps,
    - Griff W.

Java 6 you can't as Apple maintains it, and Java 7 you could if you uninstall it and Oracle provides the earlier version which they likely won't his last update fixed 37 remote exploits.
Java broken some software here and there, all you'll have to do is wait for a update from the other parties.

  • TS3489 Can the older version of Java be restored to the Mac OS X 10.4.11?  I have a new MacBook, but I like using my older desktop model for certain things.

Although I have a new MacBook,  I also have an older desktop Mac OS X 10.4.11 (which I still use) that just recently "stated" the older Java plug-in has been removed and the newer version needs to be installed.  The Mac OS X 10.4.11 doe not appear to be compatible with the updated version of Java.   Prior to this week, my grandchildren have been able to play some online early childhood games with this computer and I have been able to watch the occasional YouTube video.  Can the older version of Java be restored to the Mac OS X 10.4.11?

I'm not familiar enough with the Mac to know where your history is. Hopefully another Mac user can chime in.

  • Using Java SE 6 with Java FX 2.2 on Mac OS X

    Hello,
Has anyone tried using Java SE 6 with JavaFX 2.2 on Mac OS X?
JavaFX 2.2 System Requirements doc states that "For Mac OS X, use Java SE 7 Update 6 for Mac OS X. JavaFX 2.2 has not been formally tested with Apple's Java SE 6 implementation for Mac OS and support is offered only when used with Java SE 7 Update 6 or later.".
So I guess that means Java SE 6 may or may not work well with JavaFX 2.2 on Mac.
For some 'bugs' in my app, they simply don't exist if I switch from Java 7 to Java 6?
One such bug is mentioned in this thread: Re: Unable to play mp3 files with non-English alphabets/characters in the name
Can people with experiences in this area please share your thoughts?
Has Oracle done additional Java SE 6 and JavaFX 2.2 compatibility testings since the JavaFX 2.2 System Requirements doc was published (http://docs.oracle.com/javafx/2/system_requirements_2-2/jfxpub-system_requirements_2-2.htm)?
    Thanks.

Java 6 on Mac is not supported officially and not going to be supported.
Standalone JavaFX app might work as JDK 6 on Mac was used as dev platform before JDK 7 on Mac became available.
But this was mostly on older Mac OS X version (up to 10.6) and you may easily hit something that was fixed in Java 7 to support JavaFX better.
Webstart/Plugin will not work. You need JRE 7 from Oracle.
