Java 2 SE 1.3.1 and XP

I'm hearing that the Java plug-in 1.3.1 is not compatible
(will not work) with Windows XP. Is this true? Any solutions?
I'm upgrading to XP in part, due
to a fairly serious memory leak problem in Windows ME,
of which there is no fix at the moment. At any rate, I
need the Java plug-in to run a program.
any help appreciated!

Your plugin will work. There has been a lot of crap about how XP will not support Java. Basically it will no longer come with a JVM. You will have to download one.
This will not cause problems for:
* Upgraders from another Windows version
* Anyone who has the Sun JRE
Since the Windows VM has a shi*e level of Java support anyway, this change will affect something like 3% of users? Note that a VM will install automatically for IE when you first visit a page with Java anyway.
The main reason for the VM being left out is that Sun won the legal battle with M$, who (rightly or wrongly, depending on your point of view) were polluting the Java language with extensions for COM etc. I believe that it is legally impossible now for M$ to distribute their VM with Windows install. But it make almost no difference to the end user as far as I can see.

I am trying to use a website that requires that my computer have the latest version of Java, which I have updated and installed Java 7 Update 51 (64-bit), however Firefox does not recognize that I even have Java on my computer. My computer is 64-bit
When I run "Verify Java Version" it show nothing is installed... but it is, I know that for a fact because it shows in my "Control Panel/Programs/Programs and Features".
When I go back to the Java Download page, the following message is visible:
"We have detected you may be viewing this page in a 32-bit browser. If you use 32-bit and 64-bit browsers interchangeably, you will need to install both 32-bit and 64-bit Java in order to have the Java plug-in for both browsers."
    My question is this:
Is there a way to change my Firefox browser from 32-bit to 64-bit.... because it appears that this is way Java is not functioning properly?

Firefox needs 32-bit plugins, so you'll need to install 32-bit Java for Firefox.
No, you can't change Firefox from 32-bt to 64-bit. There is a Nightly 64-bit version (alpha) of Firefox, but it is used only to test for regressions until development is resumed.

  • Sample JAVA Mobile Server Publish code, and technical questions

Dear Oracle technical representative, or user:
I need to programmatically create, and remove publications using the pure JAVA classes of Consolidator, ConsolidatorManager, and ResourceManager for the Mobile Server in OracleLite 9i Release 5.0.1. On the creation side I have managed to get the example found in the directory OraLite501\Mobile\Server\Sample\Sample11 functioning using my installation parameters. I had a very difficult time of it because (1) the sample11 code fails to open an jdbc connection to the Mobile Server Repository Schema with the function Consolidator.OpenConnection, and (2) the ResourceManager function openConnection will not work unless the Webtogo.ora file is in the current working directory. The ConsolidatorManager function OpenConnection may also not work unless the Webtogo.ora file is in the current working directory, but I did test the hypothesis. Both of these problems need to be addressed in the sample11 code, and documentation to save other software developers from wasting hours of their valuable time. See line 223, 386, and 448 in the Publish.Java code that follows this problem description.
With the above two problems resolved, I can now programmatically create publications, but no hints on how to programmatically remove a publication exist in the documentation. The application I am developing will require the dynamic creation, and removal of publications. Also, when developing applications the complete removal of a publication is absolutely necessary when you have botched a publication. Thus my first question is What sequence of ResourceManager, and ConsolidatorManager function calls will completely remove a Publication?.
I also have two issues remaining with the code that I have so far developed. These issues will most likely be resolved, when I obtain instructions on how to completely remove a publication, and associated users. But, perhaps not. Referencing the Publish.java file that follows this problem description,
         1. The ResourceManager function dropUser does not drop a user. See my comments, and code beginning at line 277 in Publish.java. Do I need to de-instantiate all subscriptions, and unsubscribe all subscription users before calling this function.? I think, I tried the de-instantiate, unsubscribe sequence without success, but in the confusion I may not have made the try.
         2. How do I get rid of an index created with the ConsolidatorManager function DropPublicationItemIndex?. My comments on this problem begin at line 522 in Publish.java. For some reason the DropPublicationItemIndex function call made below line 448 does not work. What function calls are required prior to calling the DropPublicationItemIndex function?
Throughout the Publish.java code, I have made comments about some of the problems that I have had in getting the sample11 code working for my installation parameters. I think these comments should help the programmers maintaining the ResourceManager, and ConsolidatorManager code improve the stability of the programs. Please pass these comments, and attached files to the appropriate individuals,
if you are in a position to do so.
The other files that follow the Publish.java code are
         1. Compile.bat - Compiles Publish.java using j2sdk1.4.0.
         2. Run.bat - Executes Publish using \ j2sdk1.4.0\jre\server\jvm.dll.
         3. Webtogo.ora
         4. tnsnames.ora for the Mobile Server.
         5. tnsnames.ora for the Database.
Feel free to access my server if you need to do so in resolving my problems. The parameters you will need to gain access can be found at the top of Publish.java, and in the included *.ora files.
    Thanks,
    Thomas G. Matney

    Thanks,
    Thomas G. Matney

  • I have been getting java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: ZeroApplet.class and java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: JavaToJS.class crashes with JRE version 1.6.0_26-b03-384-10M3425 VM executing a Java Applet. Is Apple aware of this problem? No longer supported?

My web page uses a Java Applet to allow my visitors to replay chess games; the Chess Viewer Deluxe applet was written by Nikolai Pilafov some time ago and has been working properly for some time (until recently). I don't monitor this part of my site regularly so I am not sure when it began to fail. On his web site [http://chesstuff.blogspot.com/2008/11/chess-viewer-deluxe.html] he has a link to check LiveConnect object functionality (which fails for OBJECT tags). His recommendation is to "seek platform specific support which might be available from the JRE developers for your platform".
I have been getting java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: ZeroApplet.class and java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: JavaToJS.class crashes with JRE version 1.6.0_26-b03-384-10M3425 VM executing a Java Applet. Until I checked the LiveConnect object functionality, I was unable to identify the source of the console error messages. This does seem to be the smoking gun.
Is Apple aware of this problem? Are these classes no longer supported? Has anyone else had this problem? You can attempt to recreate the problem locally by going to my web page: http://donsmallidge.com/DonSmallidgeChess.html
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

I just went up to check the LiveConnect object functionality page AND IT WORKED THIS TIME! I must confess, this is very mysterious. I will do some more checking and reply here if I can determine why it is working now (and more importantly, why it didn't work before).

  • Use of Java Swing +Applescript to move and resize Mac OS X windows using

Here is an interesting use of Java on Mac OS X and Applescript to
enable moving and resizing of windows using mouse and keyboard:
    [MoveResize tool|http://code.google.com/p/sandipchitalesmacosxstuff/#Move_and_resize_windows_on_Mac_OS_X]
    How it works:
The implementation uses Applescript to get the front most window and
it's bounds. It sends the bounds rectangle to a server implemented in
Java over a socket connection. The Java server takes the screen shot
of the full Desktop and uses it as the Image label (a JLabel with
ImageIcon) as the content pane of an undecorated JFrame which has the
same bounds as the Desktop. A JPanel with semitransparent background
and a dark rounded rectangular border is given the same bounds that
were received over the socket. This JPanel is added to the
PALETTE_LAYER of the JFrame's layered pane - which makes it appear
floating in front of the front window. A Mouse and a Key listener
added to the JPanel allow moving and resizing of the JPanel. When the
user types the ENTER key the JFrame is hidden and the new bounds of
the JPanel are sent back to the Applescript over the socket connection
which moves and resizes the front most window.
    Enjoy!

Copy the /Home/Documents/ folder to the NAS drive. That drive needs to support AFP or you may run into filename problems and/or other file related problems due to filesystem differences.
Once the folder has been moved to the NAS select the folder on the NAS and CTRL- or RIGHT-click. Select Make Alias from the drop down menu. You should now have an alias named "Documents alias." On the Mac put the /Home/Documents/ folder in the Trash but don't delete it. Copy the alias file from the NAS to the /Home/ folder. Rename it to simply "Documents." Double-click on it to be sure it opens the folder on the NAS. If so you can empty the Trash. You're done.

  • Installed the Java patch for MAC yesterday and immediately could not get adobe reader to show pdf files...have troubleshot and can't seem to remedy ...ideas?

I have used the Firefox troubleshooting guides, no good. The Java patch is enabled and shows when I check applications. However when I run Firefox plugins it still shows the java plug in is outdated and need to be updated immediately.

OK, I went to the Firefox knowledge base article you cited and followed the directions with the exception that in the drop down menu I choose Adobe Reader for PDF files rather than the plug in default that apparently was set by the Java patch. Problem solved !!!!!!! Thank you so much for taking the time to get me back to the basic place I needed to be to correct this issue. YOU ROCK!!!!

  • Creating a Java content tree from scratch and then marshal it to XML data

    Hi,
After binding a schema using JAXB binding, I wrote a class to create a Java content tree from scratch and then marshal it to create an XML document. To see if the resulting xml document is correct, I opened it in XMLSpy and tried to validate it against the original schema.... I got the following error:
"Unable to locate a reference to a supported schema kind (DTD, DCD, W3C Schema, XML-Data, Biz Talk) within this document instance"
Then I realized that the generated xml document didnot contain the following for the root element:
    xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" and xsi:schemaLocation="....."
i.e, the XML Schema Instance namespace and the schema location.
How do I get these attributes incorporated into the XML document generated during the marshal process.
    Thanks.

How do I get these attributes incorporated into the XML document generated during the marshal process.
Add xmlns:xsi and xsi:schemaLocation attributes to the root element in the schema.
    <xsd:attribute name="xmlns:xsi"  fixed="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"/>

We have a productive SAP Enterprise Portal J2EE Cluster Farm with 3 Server. The version of EP is: 6.0 SP2 Patch 28. One State Controller, one Backup Controller and one new Dialog Instance.
We would like to know, which folders, shares and other j2ee/ep-components are synchronized from the state Controller-Server to the new Dialog Instance?
    Best Regards,
    Ralf Steffens

    Thank you for your response.
In the cluster administration, the Server IP column reflects the IP of the OS instance on which the server runs.  The question is relative to which LDAP server each server process grabs from a round-robin type resolution.
    Any other thoughts?

  • Java 2 v1.4.0 and Forte --- how to install on Win98?

I just received the CD labelled "Forte for Java 4," intending to use this to learn the language. There are no instrauction with it, and even all the readmes fail to give actual directions. So I found what seemed to be the install executable for Java (a few levels down) and ran it. I had guessed right and it went through the installation as I accepted defaults. Then, trying to install Forte, the installer balked by saying that it could not handle a path with a space in it. So why did the defaults for Java go ahead and put it into the usual "Program Files" folder if the associated software could not handle that? Why can't Sun provide installation instructions someplace where they can be found? Well, do I have to UNinstall Java and redo it with a different path, or what? I would appreciate any help from those who have figured out these initial hurdles.
Note to Sun: Forte is a far better name than Studio 4!

dont install java sdk in pgm files or any folder with space in its name.i install jdk in the default directory which is c:\jdk1.4 something.while installing forte it'll detect ur jdk and no prblm.and about why it cant be installed in dir with spaces u have to report it to sun ;)

  • Question about Java SDK 1.5.0 and mobile devices...

Hello, everyone. This is my first time posting on these forums since I usually find the answers I need from old threads (this place is VERY informative and HELPFUL). I wanted to know if it's possible at all to create a program from the Java Standard Edition Development Kit and have it operate on a mobile device or a suitable mobile device emulator? Or is that ony feasible with the J2ME kit? Any revelant response would be much appreciated. Thanks!

A J2SE application will not work on most mobile
devices.I know J2SE applications that don't even work on non-mobile devices.

  • [QUESTION] First Steps: Java ME SDK 3.0 AND NOKIA N95

Hi! this is my first post in the forums. I am a c# .net programmer and this is my first step to start programing mobile phones with Java ME.
I already downloaded and installed de Java ME SDK 3.0 and try the examples, then i build a sample and generate the jad.
After upload to my N95 it says that cant install the app because is for the N95 or is not supported....(I was thinking like winforms in .net... build install and run ....hahaha!)
but i found that every phone has its SDK that i must install to develop app.
    So my question is
If i have the JME SDK 3.0 installed what i need to build any Nokia or Nokia N95 app. If is possible can you tell me the configuration that i need or maybe the steps to install the SDK from nokia to use in JME., apps, emulators, docs, etc.
PD: I want to start an app that tells me the location using the internal gps of the N95.
And sorry for my bad english.
    Thanks!

check if ME SDK is configured to MIDP 2.1. Also check whether N95 supports MIDP 2.1 or 2.0; if needed, change SDK build settings to MIDP 2.0. // this seem to be rather popular problem
...I want to start an app that tells me the location using the internal gps of the N95...Google for +"nokia n95 jsr 179"+ (jsr 179 is location API in Java ME).
If you plan to target only Nokia device(s), consider getting help at Nokia Java ME forums.

  • Can you establish a Java enviroment w/o downloading and installing JAVA?

    Hello,
I am a fifteen-year-old, JAVA compatible teenager in Northern VA. I am trying to find a simple and easy way to run a JAVA application (using the ".class" files, of course) on a windows platform, hopefully without have to go through a complex install procedure. Is there some way to do this? Is this what the JRE is for? The Java plug-in? Any and all help would be very much appreciated. Thanks!
    -Stephen Mouring Jr.

Basically, the JRE is as easy to install as any other application. You just double click it, run though the wizard, and bingo.
The easiest way to distribute the JRE is to burn it onto CDs, and give them away with your app. Then users won't even have to download it. You could call it a driver ;-)
Installing the Java applications can be a bit harder. The easiest way to do it is with Java WebStart (included with the JRE), but IMO this isn't really reliable yet.
Distribute your apps in a JAR file, and make a self extracting exe that can copy the JAR to the Program Files directory, and copy a shortcut to it onto the desktop. That is, at least theoretically the easiest way.
The hard part is not installing the JRE. The hard part is making your app invoke the JRE. Basically, to make your app have an icon on the desktop and everything automatically, you'll need some kind of installer. How you go about this really depends on what kind of user base you want to distribute apps to.
    Hope this helps.--
