Java 5 Tiger via JNLP available?

Hi guys,
is Java 5 /Tiger already available via Webstart?
Cheers
Thomas

The short answer is no, it isn't even available to Java Update yet (not that this would actually work on my XP SP2 box). It'll be interesting to see how this feature keeps up with the new model of fewer j2se maintenance releases (1.5.1, 1.5.2 etc..) and more updates (1.5.0_01, 1.5.0_02) etc.. ref: http://www.theserverside.com/news/thread.tss?thread_id=29127

  • HT1338 java doesn't work and there is no update (via apple) available.

    Now running mountain lion. Unfortunately java doesn't work and there is no update (via apple) available. What do I do?

    Open Terminal (Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app) and type
    java -version
    press 'return' on the keyboard.
    Either
    1. You get a version number for Java, in which case enable Java in
    Applications/Utilities/Java Preferences.app
    Or
    2. You get an installer window pop up. After clicking through and installing that, enable Java as in 1. above.

    Hello,
    Just a quick question: can we have an official position from Sun regarding support of earlier releases of Solaris with Java RTS 2.1? Our customer is currently running Solaris 10 Update 3 with current Recommended patches, and the 2.1 beta cyclic driver supported this version of Solaris. However with the official release version of 2.1, support for U3 disappeared (only U4 and U5 are now supported). Aside from "rubber stamping" the Solaris build via /etc/release, is there a technical reason why U3 is no longer supported? As long as our kernel is up to date, can we safely use 2.1? Or is it just a case of being unable to officially support and test so many releases of Solaris?
    Is this a general rule-of-thumb we can expect in future: only supporting the last 2 updates of Solaris 10?
    Your advice is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Dave.

  • Plugin2/JNLP availability by browser??

    I think my problem is that the Next Generation Plugin (plugin 2) is not available for Safari on Windows, but I'm not really sure. The applet works on multiple other browsers (IE8, 9, Chrome, Firefox). On Safari I'm getting:
    java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: javax/jnlp/UnavailableServiceException
    which is odd in my opinion: what piece of software would be trying to throw that exception except JNLP? So, how could the exception definition be missing? Unless all of JNLP is missing???!!!??? In which case I'm screwed.
    I've found posts on other websites, none recent, saying that UnavailServiceException indicates plugin2 not installed. But, they don't say the exception's not found!!
    The tester who got this error had to install Java (using the deployJava.js package), but I don't know if she thought it was already installed. In any case, she's definitely running 1.6.0_24.
    The only services I'm starting are Basic and Persistence. (Hmmmmm: I have a catch for UnavailableServiceException. I wonder if the error's being thrown from the catch?? Had the catch worked, the tester would have seen a more informative error message.)
    Anyone with experience running JNLP/Plugin 2 applets on Safari?

    Andrew-
    I now have no references to javax/jnlp in the applet's import list. But I'm still getting the no class def error.
    My real question has become: Can I use JNLP to launch my applet? (jnlp_href) Or do I have to do all that junk by hand?
    I've emptied the Java and the Safari cache's to no avail.

    So, then I rebooted and now I'm not getting the NoClassDef, but instead it's not downloading all my jars. The Java Control Panel isn't showing my JNLP file. The Resources tab of the CP is showing one of my three jar files, the main one. Which implies JNLP is working half heartedly. After all, it found my main jar file, which means it had to have parsed the .jnlp.
    Edited by: Doctor Dad on Mar 24, 2011 1:31 PM
    And now I notice this in the console window:
    java.net.MalformedURLException: no protocol:
         at java.net.URL.<init>(Unknown Source)
         at java.net.URL.<init>(Unknown Source)
         at java.net.URL.<init>(Unknown Source)
         at sun.plugin.liveconnect.SecureInvocation.checkLiveConnectCaller(Unknown Source)
         at sun.plugin.liveconnect.SecureInvocation.access$000(Unknown Source)
         at sun.plugin.liveconnect.SecureInvocation$2.run(Unknown Source)
         at java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(Native Method)
         at sun.plugin.liveconnect.SecureInvocation.CallMethod(Unknown Source)
    There's none of my code on that dump, so I have no idea what it's trying to do. But I'm worried that I can't call JavaScript code from Safari.

  • Via JNLP transfer an DLL

    Hi Community!
    First ive got a little question, if i understood it right:
    If i write into an JNLP-File this
    <resources os="Windows">
         <nativelib href="lib/jtwain.dll.jar"/>
      </resources>Then Java should copy the DLL into the Windows System32 Directory! Or is this wrong?
    My second Question is:
    If i let me show the JNLP File in the Java WS Cache (via -- Start-->run-->javaws) the JNLP-File looks like this
    <resources>
        <jar href="http://localhost:8080/scan/lib/jtwain.dll.jar" download="eager" main="false"/>
        <j2se version="1.4+"/>the ressource os tag is away! I dont know why. I use Tomcat. Can Tomcat manipulate my JNLP File?
    I have 2 Resources Blocks. One for the DLL and one for the other jars. Now its only one left
    Thx a lot

  • Embedding The "Java DB" in a JNLP app

    Has anyone embedded Sun's "Java DB" in a JNLP application? See http://developers.sun.com/prodtech/javadb/ if you are unfamilar, though the answer would be no in your case.
    I have a JNLP system 3/4 complete using HSQL, http://hsqldb.org/ , with 20 tables, views, & about 80 mb of data uncompressed. I take HSQL from source code, and put it right into my signed jar. After removal of the database manager utility & obfuscation, it takes about 300k. While I am happy, I just want to make sure I have made the right choice. Java DB says it's "ideal" for embedding, yet does not even mention Java Webstart. Not confidence inspiring.
    The one thing I am interested in that Java DB says it does, but HSQL does not, is datafile encryption.
    The things that concern me are:
    - Is 2mb, Java DB's jar sizes, cause problems for downloading a jar file?
    - Does the encryption turn it into a dog?
    - Has anyone ever run both for the same application, and formed an opinon?
    I know, I would need to sign Sun's jars for this to have access to the file system. Any other thoughts that would keep me from wasting a week to find out?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

    I am responding to this because I have an interest in
    JWS launched D/B's (embedded or otherwise) and
    recently began doing some initial experiments using
    the Apache Derby D/B. My experimetns have not
    actually progressed to JWS launch of the D/B quite yet.
    As such, I cannot comment on most of the things you
    asked, however..
    The things that concern me are:
    - Is 2mb, Java DB's jar sizes, cause problems for
    downloading a jar file?For who? The end user?
    'It depends'. I would be very angry to be an end-user
    that downloads 2 Meg. of data just to have 'scrolling
    messages' drift across the screen.
    OTOH, if the D/B is vital to my job, a 3-4 minute
    download (of classes that are installed and
    cached locally) is 'no big deal'.
    I know, I would need to sign Sun's jars for this to
    have access to the file system. Not necessarily. Web-start offers other mechanisms
    for JWS untrusted applications to gain access to local
    files (e.g. FileOpenService/FileSaveService).
    The code to utilise these JNLP API services is
    quite different to the code you might use in the
    J2SE though, so it is more a strategy you might
    pursue for new a project, where all that code is
    yet to be written.
    For an existing desktop application that is about to
    be wrapped in web-start, it is usually difficult, if
    not impossible, to translate what it does into
    equivalent JNLP API services, and a lot easier to
    sign it and request either 'all-permissions' or
    'j2ee-application-client' permissions in the JNLP.
    If you need to sign it, Ant makes a light task of it.

  • Java Web Start and JNLP Problem

    Hi !
    Im a student and i need your help for a work that i have to do.
    I have an aplication that parse an XML file.
    The XML file is in ther server, and when i run the aplication with Java Web
    Start and jnlp file i want that the application parse a XML file.
    is this possible??? how can i do ???
    if you dont understand please warn me, that i try to explain better..
    thanks, in advance.
    Rui Silva , Portugal

    I'm not sure that you need webstart.
    Just an applet will allow you to read a file from the server:
    Just open a URL pointing to the .xml file.
    Read the file into a buffer and then parse it.
    Now actually getting the applet to do something with the contents of the .xml file
    is more complicated. Presumably you need to write something which understands the
    contents of the .xml and does something in response to the contents.
    A signed java program can be run from with in webstart which can spawn processes on
    the local machine. os.systemExec("command a b c"); But of course that has cross platform
    problems.
    Good luck

  • When Leopard comes out, will Tiger still be available?

    I'm a nincompoop with computers, when Leopard comes out, will Tiger still be available to purchase? I would rather have OS X Leopard, but I don't know if my powerbook will satisfy the requirements to run it. Have they published the requirements for Leopard? I want to make an informed decision but I'm not sure if time will permit.

    Here you can buy previous versions off OSX:
    http://www.macsales.com/
    MacSales does still sell OSX Panther (version before Tiger). So if Leopard is available for sail you can still buy Tiger there. There are also a lott other store's which do sell previous versions off OSX.
    I don't know what model powerbook you have?
    If it is a G4 then you can definitely run Leopard on it. Leopard will probably not support any off the Mac's with a G3 processor.
    Hopefully this is helpfull or solved your problem.

  • Problem calling java from vb via activex bridge

    I am trying to call java from vb via ActiveX Bridge and I am running into problems. I would appreciate any help.
    I am using Visual Basic 2010 express, and Java JDK 1.6.0_16. I have used the http://download.oracle.com/javase/1.4.2/docs/guide/beans/axbridge/developerguide/index.html page as a guideline. To try to make it work I took the following steps:
    1. Wrote a very simple java class (below):
    package xxx;
    import java.io.Serializable;
    public class axb implements Serializable {
    public int get_axb_Handle() {
    int Address = 12345678;
    return Address;
    2. After I compiled, and created the jar file. I built the dll using the following command:
    "C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_16\bin\packager" -out "C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_16\jre\axbridge\bin" E:\axb\dist\axb.jar xxx.axb
    3. I then registered using: regsvr32 axb.dll
    4. In Visual Basic Express IDE I use Project -> Add Reference to add Iterop.axb (dump below), and axb namespace
    5. In my basic code I use the following lines
    Dim axb1 As axb.axb
    axb1 = New axb.axb <== Crash here with AccessViolationException ( full exception below)

    h2. Object Creation
    For starters, when you create an ActiveX object from within VB, use:
    Set myObject = CreateObject("JavaObject.Bean")When I refer to JavaObject.Bean, I'm meaning the full object name + ".Bean". So, in your case, you should use:
    Set myObject = CreateObject("xxx.axb.Bean")h2. Location
    The .dll file must be located in the JRE that is used at the time of calling. Meaning, the .dll file must be placed under <jre_home>\axbridge\bin and registered there.
    In your case:
    DLL:
    C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\axbridge\bin
    Jar:
    C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\axbridge\libh4. A Note:
    The only supported JRE is a 32bit version as far as I know with regards to the ActiveX bridge. Just like the packager.exe can only be found in the 32bit JDK.
    h2. Methods
    h3. Object Types
    ActiveX Bridge does not support passing literals or arrays. However, it does support passing java's primitive data types as Objects.
    Simply meaning:
    h4. Invalid:
    public int get_axb_Handle() {
         int Address = 12345678;
         return Address;
    }h4. Valid:
    public Integer get_axb_Handle() {
         int Address = 12345678;
         return Address;
    }On a normal circumstance, there's little difference between the two methods. However, in the second example, the JVM does a typecast from a literal data type to a object data type, resulting in a valid object to pass through to Visual Basic. Now, obviously there are multiple ways to do a proper change, new Integer(int) for example. It doesn't matter to me. At the end of the day, you have to pass an object.
    As a side note, the same idea applies when receiving data from Visual Basic.
    h4. Invalid:
    public void set_axb_Handle(int newHandle) {
         int Address = newHandle;
    }h4. Valid:
    public void set_axb_Handle(Integer newHandle) {
         int Address =newHandle;

  • Trying to install Tiger via external FW drive.

    I've got a PowerMac G4 which no longer has an internal CD/DVD drive as it's been displaced by three other large drives for it's use as a fileserver.
    It's currently running 10.3.9 and I am trying to upgrade the Mac to run Tiger via an external firewire 400 DVD drive and a vanilla 10.4 retail install. I can get the computer to boot via the external drive, and can run all of it's utilities. AHT and Disk Util show no anomalies.
    When I run the actual install however I get the message:
    "There were errors installing. Please try again."
    And that appears to be as far as I can get. At first (after ruling out disk errors) I thought it was a disk space issue (eg. temporary files) so I freed some more disk space (it's currently 11.6GB free so I figured this should be enough), except I still get the error.
    Will OS X only install via an internal ComboDrive or SuperDrive?

    Turns out my problem wasn't the external firewire drive I was attempting to upgrade with, it was the target disk which had some problems the installer didn't like. With a different drive (which MUST be formatted first!), I was able to install a new copy of OS X and import the majority of settings from the old drive.
