Java and UML !!!

I need some help with a university project, where i have to convert UML models in Java source code.
I have to develop a tool which takes in UML models and outputs an e-commerce application.
Are there any web-sites which have good examples of UML to java.?
I am really stuck on this so if anyone could help it would be much appreciated!
Many Thanks.

Hi aashish24 ... thanks for your reply.
Would Rational Rose show me the actual conversion. So if I drew out a UML model into Rose, how do i go about converting it into Java, and would the tool show me the actual and whole java code for the UML model.
I also would like to know if there are any web-site which show a good conversion from UML models to Java code.
Many Thnks for your help.

  • UML,Java and Access

    Hello Good morning. Maybe this message has not a lot to do at all with Java. Iam doing a program in Java using UML(both OO).Wouldn't be a contradiction to use MS Access as "DataBase" since Java and UML are Object Oriented?.
    Thanks.
    CELH.

    You are quite right. Thus, I wonder about it because it's strange mixing Object Oriented programming and modeling with a relational DataBase. Maybe a Object Oriented DataBase will suit it better, but then again, you are right: There a few known Object Oriented DataBase.
    Thanks.

  • Java and "High Risk Activities"

    The java license says that it "is not designed, licensed, or intended for use in the design, construction, operation or maintenance of any nuclear facility ("High Risk Activities")."
    I think this must have something to do with GC? Can anyone explain what is required to make java suitable for "High Risk Activities"? I might have some work with the Russian atomic energy agency coming up.

    design, construction, operation or maintenance of any nuclear facility...
    "Design" and "construction" rule out CAD design tools written in Java, and UML design tools for software engineering, if you interpret the license very restrictively.
    It seems to me that it is a remain from the Cold War era.
    I can't say if they simply have written a disclaimer (we at Sun can not be responsabilized by the Three Mile Island or the Chernobyl incidents because Java can't be used at such sites...), or they think that Java is a weapon (like strong cryptography)...
    I agree with the conditions "operation" or "maintenance" - plain old Java, without real-time extensions, suffers with the unpredictability of response time due to garbage collection cycles - even if you pass a lot of parameters to the JVM, like -XX+UseParallelGC . (Plain old Linux has such problem as well, so you need to use some Linux distro that implements real-time extensions, or better, an operating system that is designed from the ground up to support real-time operations, like QNX).
    I am not a lawyer; please check the license with someone.

  • [Java and all else] How do you document DB design?

    Hello,
    Although most of the technical choices are explicit in SQL (UniqueKey & ForeignKey constraints, indexes,...), the semantics of the data columns and their constraints seem better served as plain human-readable comments ("ID column: identifies the plane copy; 6 figures are enough as we don't expect to sell more than 1 million planes in a foreseeable future...").
    In my current system, (EJB-based, but the DB schema is not created by the JPA-compliant ORM, but via SQL scripts), I see the following ways to write and maintain this documentation:
    - SQL comments in the schema creation and patch scripts
    - Javadoc comments in the Java source of the Entity classes.
    - UML notes in UML diagrams(1)
    - external "Architecture and design" document.
    All 4 of them are used, sometimes inconsistently, for various parts of the design choices; I mean, the docs do not contradict themselves (not yet, but it's a mere question of time), but some tables are commented in SQL scripts, others are in design docs, and the details for some columns are in entity javadocs. Although each developer may find it handier to "write" the doc via his preferred medium, it becomes increasingly difficult to "maintain" theoverall documentation.
    Our current situation is that most of the project team members are Java developers, so it would probably be better accepted and served if we standardized that we document DB tables and columns in Java source, but I am worried that:
    - someone else pouring over our DB (ex: DBA helping us to optimize things, or other team developping a data-mining tool to leverage the historical data in DB) may not be as comfortable with Java
    - this may not cover all design choices of the DB schema:
    - - - - first, although that is the case currently, in the future there might not be a 100% 1-1 mapping between e.g. each entity class and a DB table. Maybe some columns will not need to be mapped anymore,...
    - - - - second, I fear some DB constructs are not amenable to Java counterparts; no accurate idea there, I'm not an SQL nor JPA expert, but I presume Indexes, table partitioning, tablespaces, for example (yes, the DBMS is Oracle :o) are not taken into account in JPA mapping.
    And if we document those choices at the SQL level (my preferred idea so far), this will gradually make the javadocs in the entities obsolete, or removed altogether, and that will make future maintenance of the Java source risky.
    How do you document your DB design in general?
    Do you have specific advices for my case?
    Thanks in advance,
    J.
    (1) Just for the record, here are a few posts that refer to modelling the DB in UML:

    P.S.: "Java and all else" as in, damn, I'd love to use the familiar JDC forums and people to discuss not only Java-related issues, but also [all other things that surround Java|http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5422264&tstart=0] (other technologies, processes, people) and enable to make workable systems out of Java code.

    Thank you again.
    A couple more questions:
    2. Table, and proc dictionary maintained as one or more text files. Those files and schema are all in source control.Do you mean, a proprietary text format (a la tabledesign.txt), or +.sql+ source files? Again, you seem to suggest the scehma info is present in two locations.I didn't say two locations unless you meant files. Then yes.Yes I meant two files. I trust the team to get the doc file lagging a few revisions behind the SQL file, and to correct that I would have to include one more step in the review process (e.g. "review CM actions to check that the doc file is updated consistently with the SQL source").
    The tool I wrote would throw errors if the comment file didn't match the schema. And if comments were not provided. That of course doesn't stop someone from documenting a table with "a table".
    You can of course keep the addtional info as special comments in the SQL, but when I did this, and even in retrospect, it seems better and perhaps easier to keep them seperate. I have done special comments in SQL before and it seems a bit of a kluge but you do have the single source. But in that case I was the only one maintaining it too.What do you mean by "special"?For code generation I have a schema file with the following (pseudo sql.)
        create mytable
           mytable_id int,
           column_foo varchar(10);
           column_fum varchar(20)
            -- Query: for_a_query (column_foo, column_fum)
        )The generator consumes the schema and generates the standard CRUD which would include a query based on the primary key.
    The above comment is used to provide an additional query where the proc is named 'for_a_query' (munged with table name) and takes two parameters (column_foo, column_fum) whose type/name matches those of the table.
    If we don't try to generate a browseable HTML out of the schema (although the idea is appealing, I don't have the resource to make such a tool), do you see anything kludgy in maintaining SQL comments interpersed within DDL code?
    Of course that is doable.

  • Enterprise JAVA with UML

    Hi all ,
    I am studying enterprise java with UML.So below are the concepts i need help .
    Objective of this discussion .
    - I have study all the below but still not quite sure and even refer to few 'web site'.That is reason why i submitting this .Pls input with description in a manner of 'easy to understand' cause my english not so good.
    problem 1
    The purpose of Frame work ,package ,component ,design pattern and system architecture design are for code reuse and save cost/time so
    What are significant different each of above ?
    What are similarity between each of above(important)?
    When to use it each of above?
    Problem 2(use case)
    Given case contract ,use case model ,use case interaction with external system
    What are significant different each of above ?
    What are similarity between it each of above?
    When to use it each of above?
    Given a project developing a pay roll system, how use case realization mature and what UML diagrams to involve with use case realization from inception stage to transition stage?

    I won't give you answers to your problems...that is why you are taking the course.
    What I can offer is suggestions. It sounds like you need to check out a good J2EE Patterns book (Core J2EE Patterns - good book), and a good UML book that addresses J2EE models. Read them and you will most likely find and understand the answers to your problems.

  • Developing Reverse Engineering Program -- JAVA to UML what needed

    Hi there,
    I am wondering why people want to develop reverse engineering?? it is useful? but developing the reverse Engineering sound interesting for me.
    Anyway I just intend to figure out how to develop a reverse Engineering program FROM java to UML diagram. Which create Use cases, class and sequence diagram. Is that possible??
    what kinds of Knowledge I need to know in order to develop reverse Engineering. Is there any tutorial that can teach me on how the Reverse Enginneering works?
    Does Reverse Enginneering check words by words in order to develop the program?
    That all...

    Hi,
    You need a parser, like ANTLR, plus a java grammar for that parser (antlr has one). You need a uml model implementation like MDR, EMF or the obsolete NSUML. You need a diagramming library like GEF or JGraph. With those 3 components you could build your own r.e. tool. search google for urls.
    you're interested in the subject so try to read http://citeseer.nj.nec.com/545406.html and related papers.
    you'll need to understand the java language specification (java.sun.com), JSR26 (jcp.org) [a std mapping from java to uml], and the uml metamodel (download the specification from www.omg.org).
    many reverse engineering scenarios are possible, although not all tools have found time to implement them.
    eg. java class -> class diagram
    java method -> sequence diagram
    I don't know of any tutorials. But you could look at the implementation of ArgoUml (argouml.tigris.org) and ask questions on the developer mailing list.
    That should keep you busy for the rest of the year...

  • BI Java and BI ABAP -RSPLAN issue

    Hi All
    We are working with BI system ,using BI 7.0 Java and BI ABAP as separate systems on same host.
    Already run the template intaller for BI Java and ABAP integration.
    But facing some issue ,when going ot BI ABAP and RSPLAN and clicking the Start Mideller
    it is opening a browser as http://host:8000/sap/public/myssocntl?sap-client-XXX
    Since this is not correct and it should open BI Java portal instead of ABAP stack page.
    Instead this should open a Url like this http://host:5XX00/webdynpro/dispatcher/sap.com/biplanworkbench1/Modeler?
    I check on BI ABAP system under SAP Reference IMG -> SAP Customizing Implementation Guide-> SAP NetWeaver _> Business Intelligence-> BI Integrated Planning -> Settings for Starting the Planning Modeler.
    There the default Url is BEx Portal Server and the url is
    http://host:5XX00/webdynpro/dispatcher/sap.com/biplanworkbench1/Modeler
    Can anybody let me know why this is going to ABAP server instead it should go to Java.

  • How to get return value from java and read by other application?

    i want to read return value from java and the other application read it.
    for example:
    public class test_return {
        test_return(){
        public int check(){
            return 1;
        public static void main(String args[]){
           new test_return().check();
    }from that class i make as jar file. How to read the return value (1) by other application?
    thx..

    If your installer is requiring some process it invokes to return a particular value on failure, then the installer is seriously broken. There are a bazillion commands your installer could invoke, and any of them could fail, which in turn could invalidate the entire install process, and any of them could return any value on failure. The only value that's consistent (in my experience) is that zero means success and non-zero means failure, with specific non-zero values being different in different programs.
    About the only control you have over the JVM's exit code is that if your main method completes without throwing an exception, the JVM will have an exit code of 0, and if main throws an exception (either explicitly or by not catching one thrown from below), it will be non-zero. I'm not even sure if that's guaranteed, but I would guess that's the case.
    EDIT: I'm kind of full of crap here. If you're writing the Java code, you can call System.exit(whatever). But nonetheless, if your installer requires certain exit codes from any app--java or otherwise--you have a problem.

  • Problem with java and flex web service

    Hi,
    I have a basic web service written in java using jax ws 2.1
    ri. I need to call it from Flex using the WebService class
    Annotations for the java web method :
    @WebMethod
    public void Login(
    @WebParam(name="server") String serverURL,
    @WebParam(name=AUTHENTICATE_HEADER,header=true,mode=WebParam.Mode.INOUTHolder<Authenticate Header>
    authHeader)
    When I try and call the service from Flex , it can't find the
    login method and attempts to call it fail. If I set the web service
    to RPC based using @SOAPBinding , the method is found but then
    there are issues with the authentication header.
    What do I need to do to get flex web services communicating
    succesfully with java ?
    Are there are any known compatibility issues ? Or guidelines
    for going about this ?
    Any help would be appreciated

    well Shay,
    i've used JDev's tools to developer and to deploy the web service: the war and ear files are automatically generates you to the end of the process.
    I have included all the files java and the compiled classes, but I do not have files jar.
    But don't works: if i create only one java class with all code inside then it works fine!!

  • Problem with java and javaw

    Hi,
    In running the following simple code, I have gotten different results using java and javaw.
    public class Test {
    public Test() {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    int x =4;
    System.out.println("The value is "+ ((x > 5)?6.0:4));
    System.out.println("The value is "+ ((false)?6.0:4));
    System.out.println("The value is "+ ((true)?99:9.9));
    Using java, I get the following results:
    The value is 4.0
    The value is 4.0
    The value is 99.0
    But using javaw, I get the following results:
    The value is 4.0
    The value is 4
    The value is 99
    Any ideas why this is so?
    Thanks for any help.

    I used JBuilder to run the following code and Jbuilder uses javaw.
    By the way, the correct answer is the one using java right?

  • Problem with Java and Zip Files

    Hello there everyone. I have a problem with trying to zip up directories with empty folders in them. They zip fine with my code, but according to winzip, the number of files in the archive is incorrect. It's supposed to have a total of 288 files in it, but when it's zipped up, it only says 284. I mention specifically the "empty directories" note because the zipping works fine without empty folders.
    Below is the code for the zip method:
    public static void zip(File[] list, File zipfile, File zipRoot)
         throws IOException {
          if (!zipfile.exists()) {
                   zipfile.createNewFile();
              else if (!zipfile.isFile()) {
                   throw new IOException("The zip file, " + zipfile.getAbsolutePath()
                             + " is not a file.");
              if (list.length == 0) {
                  LOG.error("The list of files to zip up is empty.");
              for (int i = 0; i < list.length; i++) {
                   if (!list.exists()) {
                        throw new IOException("The file or directory, " + list[i].getAbsolutePath()
                                  + " does not exist.");
              FileOutputStream fos = new FileOutputStream(zipfile);
              ZipOutputStream zos = new ZipOutputStream(fos);
              for (int i = 0; i < list.length; i++) {
                   if (LOG.isDebugEnabled())
                        LOG.debug(i + ": " + list[i].getName());
                   String entryName = getRelativeName(list[i], zipRoot);
                   if (list[i].isDirectory()){
                        if (list[i].listFiles().length == 0){
                             ZipEntry entry = new ZipEntry(entryName + "/");
                             zos.putNextEntry(entry);
                   else {
                        ZipEntry ze = new ZipEntry(entryName);
                        zos.putNextEntry(ze);
                        byte[] buffer = new byte[8096];
                        FileInputStream fis = new FileInputStream(list[i]);
                        int read = 0;
                        read = fis.read(buffer);
                        if (LOG.isDebugEnabled())
                        LOG.debug("\tFound " + read + " bytes.");
                        if (read == -1){
                             //empty file, but add it for preservation.
                             //zos.write(buffer,0,0);
                        while (read != -1) {
                             zos.write(buffer, 0, read);
                             read = fis.read(buffer);
                        fis.close();
                        zos.closeEntry();
              zos.close();
    The files look like they're there, but I need the system to be able to determine the number correctly.
    Here's the interesting thing:  It zips the files, and then when I use the size() method for zip files in java, it says 284 files.  But when I unzip, it says 288 again.  It's like there's files missing when compressed, but when decompressed, they return.  Note that the files are actually there.  If I open the archive in a third party app such as Winzip AND Winrar AND IZarc, they all show 288 files.  Any idea what would make the number of files appear incorrectly in a zip file when zipped by java with the code above?  Thanks in advance.

    I figured out the problem. When zipping files in windows using winzip, it doesn't explicitly count folders as a "file/folder" as a file in itself. It will create the folders for files to go in, but the folder itself will not be 'counted' when you query the info of the file itself. You have more control of the zip file in java, and can count the folder as a file or not.

It seems that this is RSA algorithm compatibility problem. I'm using algorithm from java.security package, instatinating Cipher object like this: c = Cipher.getInstance("RSA"); . I noticed that this algorithm produces for input blocks of lengtrh <=117 ouput block of length 128. Server I guess uses the most triviall impelentation of RSA ( (1 byte is encrypted to 1 byte) So i want to make my java algorithm compatibile with this one which server uses. How to do that ? Do i have to instatinate Cipher object in different way ? Or use another library ?

    First you said it was no good because it could only handle <= 117 byte inputs, now you say it is no good because it produces a 128-byte output. You're not making sense.First i said that this two RSA implementations are not compatibile, and first reason i noticed firstly is that Python imlementation for input of length N produces cryptogram of the same length. Not true. In general, the RSA encryption of any number of bytes less than the length of the modulus will produce a result of length near that of the modulus. When N is less than the length of the modulus, it is rare that N bytes of cleartext produces N bytes of ciphertext.
    Java implementation for data block of length <=117 produces alwasy 128 bytes of output.Pretty much correct and very much desirable. This is primarily a function of the PKCS1 padding which is used to solve two basic problems. First, as I alluded to in my first response, it is the nature of the algorithm that leading zeros are not preserved and second when the cleartext is very small (a few bytes) the exponentiation does not roll over and it is easy to decrypt the result. Both these problems are addressed by PKCS1 padding.

    After what sabre150 said i think of giving up idea of translating Python code to Java and considering to use another assymetric cryptography algorithms on both sides. Can you recommend me sth what should be compatibile with Python ?This seems to be at odds with your statement in reply #3 "Also have acces only to client code so i have to change sth in java." ! This statement is why I said "I suspect ... you have dug a deep hole".
    In your position I would use the Python bindings for openssl. Once more, Google is your friend.
