Java applet cache parameter
I'm sorry if that what I'm looking for is described elsewhere. I couldn't find it. I seem to have a bug with the latest Apple's java implementation (1.5) downloaded with the latest Software Update.
I have to switch off applet caching for a certain applet and tried to do this via the Java preference app. It seems that it doesn't work using the offered checkbox. Because everytime when I check it and leave the dialog and turn back it's still checked. I tried it with the deployment properties file but had no luck not knowing (finding) the correct parameter to set false.
As setting the cache size to zero didn't resolve the problem finally I tried to set the cache path to "/dev/zero" what for sure is the worst solution but it works out. Caching is disabled (This way I discovered that trying to write the cache path in the box in the preference pane you can write it only in reverse manner! llun/ved/ No, it's not a joke)
Anyone could tell me the right parameter for the deployment properties file that I can correct this situation?
Thanks
Powerbook Mac OS X (10.4.6)
Unfortunately, this did not resolve the issue. I have been doing a bit more looking and it appears I'm getting a null resource error on reload/refresh:
public abstract class SimpleWindow extends JInternalFram
public SimpleWindow()
initComponents();
public class FancyWindow extends SimpleWindow
public FancyWindow()
initComponents();
}During startup, it tries to create a new FancyWindow, which calls initComponents(). Inside initComponents is a call to create a JEditorPane.
The function runs fine, and I am able to create a new JEditorPane; however, when I do:
jedit.setText("Text Here");I get my null error (tracing through the calls, it looks like it's unable to initialize the editorkit.
This does not happen on a normal first-time load. It does not happen if I completely close the browser and restart it to re-run the applet, but if I just try to refresh it, it seemingly can't get memory for this?
Edit: It looks like this may be a regression in 1.6.0_22 and later: 1.6.0_22 HTMLEditorKit throws NullPointerException when reloaded

Java Applet: Caching data in User HDD?
Hi,
I'm trying to write a java applet which requires approximately 700K of mathematical data everytime it runs. One way to do this is to download those data off from server everytime the applet starts up, but it seems terribly inefficient for me cuz those data do not change at all.
Is there anyway to work around such issue, for example, by storing the data into user's hdd? Or is it possible to pack the mathematical data together with .class files into a jar file and then somehow access them in user's side? (dunno how to do so and not sure if it's possible)
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

AaronYou have one answer above.
Create a jar file, put your applet classes in it, and then put the data files in the jar with the application. Theres no restriction as to the types of file you can put in a jar, and Jars are essentially zip files, so no point in zipping the data first.
As to storing stuff locally on the client, that's unadvisable, and disallowed due to the java security model anyhow. It is possible to override the security manager but, I'm not sure if this is possible with an applet though. It would undoubtedly not be hassle free.
Another thing that could help is jar caching..
http://java.sun.com/products/plugin/1.3/docs/appletcaching.html this would improve the start up time by caching the jar file on the client, between invocations. -
My Upgrading Java Applets Cache won't finish
I had to reinstall Java 6.0 and each time I try to run something requiring Java, it doesn't load. All I get is a box stating Upgrading Java Applets Chache, it runs about half way and then quits. I am getting very frustrated after working on this for 2 days.
It says "Please wait while your stored Java Applets are updated for Java SE 6". Runs for about 20 secs and then stops and the box disappears. Does anybody have any suggestions? I am not very computer savvy so please explain in simple terms.
ThanksHi
I had the exact same problem. took me days to find the solution, hope it works for you.
Click on the START button bottom left on the screen, Then look for the CONTROL PANEL button and click, (this should bring up lots of icons for programmes) on some computers its under themes and sttings I think. Click on the JAVA icon this brings up a CONTROL PANEL. Click on SETTINGS at the bottom, then click DELETE FILES. (this took a while to complete on my computer) Just to make sure after you've done this bring up the JAVA CONTROL PANEL again but this time click on ADVANCED. Then at the bottom theres is Miscellaneous, click on this and there should be JAVA QUICK STARTER with a box ticked next to it, Click on the tick and get rid of it then click on OK..
Try a website that uses Java. the cache box might appear again but just hit cancel. When I tried this i was able to use Java again.
Hope it works -
Java Applet Caching for 1.7u51 using pack200
Hi all,
Currently, I have implemented an applet and use pack200 to pack my jar to reduce the download time for users to run the applet in their side.
But even if I add "cache_option" = "plugin" and "cache_archive" attributes, I dont see that my applet being cache when running the applet in java 1.7u51's Cache Viewer under java's control panel.
Could anyone tell/show me how to cache applet to the cache viewer when running a pack200 applet package? FYI, even if I'm not using pack200 jar, I can't seem to see my applet being cache in
Cache Viewer.
I'm running my applet using the deployJava.js
I'm setting the following in the atttributes clause and
var attributes = { id:'test_applet',
name:'test_applet',
code:'TestApplet.class',
codebase: '<%=url2TestApplet%>',
cache_option: 'plugin',
mayscript: true,
cache_archive:'test_applet.jar',
width:300, height:300} ;
var parameters = {};
deployJava.runApplet(attributes, parameters, '1.6');

Why does my Firefox say my java applet is corruped and will,not download for my game
I play a lot of games on POGO and they tell me that I have to have JAVA and Mozilla Fire Fox for my browser. I have 1 game that I get kicked off of each time I try to play it. I get a notice telling me that my browser says my applet from Java is corrupted and will not download. I have done everything they suggest and nothing works. Mozilla seems to be a terriable choice for me as a browser I have a lot of ppproblems with them getting me to my web pages.. help!!
Hi,
Have you tried deleting the Java applet cache from the '''Java Control Panel''' > '''Temporary Internet Files''' > '''Settings''' > '''Delete Files...'''? -
In order to reduce both load times and network burden we are looking at the possibility using a common location for the java applet cache. Our internal tests, albeit limited, have proved successful. By specifying a common local network location for storing temporary files in the java control panel we were able to pull the jars for our applet by one initial user and use that cache (on a different pc) by another user. Specifically, we are looking at implementing this in a citrix environment using a local cache on the citrix server (rather than the network location in our tests).
Does anyone have experience doing this? If so, what potential problems could arise? Is there a better solution?
Thanks for any advise.Can I get help from you?
If my question was not clear, please point out and I will supply more information.
Looking forward to getting answer from you - Java Expert :) -
Java applet loading slowdown somehow related to caching
We are getting calls from our clients complaining of slowdowns in loading our Java applet. We have found that this is related to caching because if we get them to turn caching off then the load time is reduced dramatically. We also found that if we get them to clear the cache then reload, the first time is slow because all the jar files are re-cached, and from that point on it is quick to load for a period of time before it becomes slow again.
Scenario:
Client Loads Applet - 60 sec load time.
Cache is cleared and client loads again - 90 sec load time.
Client Loads again - 25 sec load time.
Client leaves machine for an hour, no changes made to workstation
Client returns and loads applet again - 60 sec load time.
During this time nothing changes with the jar files on the server so they are not being re-cached. All cached files still remain in the cache properly. This only happens on some computers, but not others, and we can't seem to reproduce on computers that do not show this behaviour.
We are currently using the 1.5.0_06 JRE, but we experienced this with the 1.4.2_03 JRE as well. We are caching around 10mb of jar files. This one has puzzled us for a while. We thought it might be due to virus scanner settings scanning archive files, but we have ruled that out. Not sure what else
If anyone has seen a similar problem, or has any ideas please post. I am fresh out of ideas on what could be causing this slowdown. Thanks,
TylerI have read through the documentation there. It doesn't seem to help any. I tried to tell it which jar files to cache, but that doesn't help. It's not necessarily 1 hour until it slows down again, it is a random amount of time, but usually less than 24 hrs. Once the slowdown occurs it will happen until the cache is cleared again. If html was causing the jar files to be recached, then one would assume that if you loaded the applet again right after then it would be fast again. Unfortunately this is not the case.

Increase lyfecyle applet cache on java runtime
Hi .
Applet in IE6 on windows XP SP1, with java 15.0_09.
I launch 3 times the applet with the same codebase.
I launch the applet on first time on i go to a transaction after i launch in the same IE window the applet for the second time and i go in another transaction. I return in the first applet, that reload it in the first transaction when i do the same action on second applet i return in the second transaction. I this point there is no problem ...
But when i launch the applet on third time and i go to another transaction, i lost the context of my first applet when i come back in.
On tracing i can see that java use a "lifecycle applet cache", and this cache have 2 slots, that the reason that i lost the first applet context on the third launch.
My question i how can i increase the number of slots on "lifecycle applet cache" ?Unfortunately, this did not resolve the issue. I have been doing a bit more looking and it appears I'm getting a null resource error on reload/refresh:

Unable to clear java cache and also unable to load JAVA Applets when QTP installed in PC
Hi,
I am facing a problem when QTP 11.0 along with Java 6 Update 22 and Java Plugin installed in the PC. The Java Applets are not being loaded in the webpages, when I try to load it through QTP, but when I try to load the applets manually that is working fine. Can anyone suggest any kind of solution for this. All the setup was being run on 32-bit and 64- bit PC's.
Thanks in advance,
Waiting for the reply.start the weblogic server with the command startWeblogic. And then start the SOA server from Admin console.This is the issue. For starting servers from console, you need to configure node manager. Start SOA servers from command line using command startManagedWeblogic (as mentioned in Quick Start Guide for BAM server).

Parameter that drives applet cache behavior
Can anyone point to documentation related to the control of the applet cache behavior on the client?

Hi.
I have java applet and I want browser to cache it into java plugin store.
I use this HTML code:
<applet
codebase = "."
id = "test"
code = "TestClass.class"
name = "TestApplet"
width = "0"
height = "0"
hspace = "0"
vspace = "0"
align = "middle"

<PARAM NAME="cache_archive" VALUE="signedapplications.jar, signedcommon.jar">
<PARAM NAME="cache_version" VALUE="1.0.0.0, 1.0.0.0">
</applet>
But it does not work at all. It simply does not cache the applet. I tried also cache_archive_ex parameter but no change occured.
I do not use any web server (running the page locally) so caching cannot be disabled by the server. (Of course java cache is enabled :)
Please help what I am doing wrong.
P.S. I am using java 1.6.0.1.Try [URLConnection.setUseCaches(false)|http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/api/java/net/URLConnection.html#setUseCaches(boolean)].

Problem Launching Java Applet with Plug-in: Version 1.4.2_01
Hello out there:
I recently installed j2re-1.4.2_01 on my home computer but have been unable to access Web sites emmploying JAva applets. The following is an email exchange with Jeff Hall of Lowell Observatory, manager of an educational site hosted by Lowell, trying to resolve my problem. The messages are better understood if read in reverse order.
I'm hoping that someone will recognize the source of my problem and can recommmend a solution. I would appreciate any help offered.
Thanks,
Mike Coucke
Hi Jeff:
Well, I guess the problem lies with me somewhere. Here's my answer/status to your questions/suggestions:
1) I'm using MS Windows Me version 4.90.3000
2) I do have the directory C:\Windows\.jpi_cache\jar\, but the only thing in it is an empty folder labeled "1.0". The file LP.jar does not exist anywhere on my hard drive.
3) I tried several game sites that utilized Java applets and got the same results: the Java cup in the upper left corner followed a few seconds later by the red "X". So, evidently the problem is somewhere on my end.
I'm going to post our email exchanges in a Java Users Forum managed by Sun to see if anyone out there can solve my problem. However, if you have any more suggestions, I'll be glad to try them.
Thanks for the help.

Mike,
Rats! What version of Windows are you using? It's a little strange to
see the user directory set to C:\Windows; if you're using XP, I'd expect
it to be something like C:\Documents and Settings\Mike Coucke. In any
event, the output that is of concern is these two lines:
java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: LPRemote.class
Caused by: java.net.UnknownHostException: proxy
It looks like your browser is not finding our server's IP when it comes
time to download the necessary Java code.
LPRemote.class is the fundamental code that runs LOPARC, and your
browser should be downloading it automatically when you click connect.
LPRemote.class is stored along with a bunch of other classes in a file
called "LP.jar" that you download from our server. So, if you go to C:
in Windows Explorer and do a file search for LP.jar, you should find it.
On my machine, it's stored in a directory called ".jpi_cache\jar\" in my
user home directory. Let me know if you have this file, or the
jpi-cache directory.
One other thing you might try is going to a different site that you know
uses Java applets -- I think some of the online game rooms at Yahoo use
Java. See if other sites that use Java load correctly. Then we'll know
if it's our server specifically, or a more general problem on your end.
Jeff Hall
Lowell Observatory
Hello Jeff:
I still have the Java "blues". I followed your instructions, but am still unable to launch a LOPARC session. After an initial failure, I uninstalled all three Java versions I had (1.4.0, 1.4.1, 1.4.2), then reinstalled 1.4.2_01 from the Sun website.
Now, when I try to launch LOPARC, I initially get a blank window with the Java cup in the upper left corner. After about 20 seconds, the cup changes to a red "X". During those 20 seconds, the following appear in the IE message bar at the bottom of the window: "Applet LPRemote notinited" (their spelling) which changes to "Loading Java Applet Failed..." when the red "X" appears.
Following is a copy of the log from my Java Console during all of this:

I'm not a Java expert, so this may be more information than you ever wanted to see.
Once again, I hope that you can help. My experience has been that I usually have some obscure option set incorrectly and that causes me great grief.
Thanks fo your help,
Mike Coucke

Subject: RE: Registration with Lowell Education Online
Hi Mike,
Try it now. I think this problem has arisen because Sun just
released a new version of the Plug-in (1.4.2), and when we released the
public beta of LOPARC, only one relevant version (1.4.0) was available
and the LOPARC code was written to look for that by default. I have
just recoded the relevant routines so they should now cause your browser
to simply pick up the latest 1.4 version of the Plug-in you have
installed, whatever it is. I "broke" Java on my machine to replicate
your problem, and the code I inserted today did fix it. Hopefully it
will have the same effect for you. I am running IE 6 and plugin
1.4.2_01 (as accessed via Tools->Sun Java Console).
One broader problem: some (non-LOPARC-specific) users on the Sun
forums have reported the "JRE collision" you are seeing when multiple
versions of the Plug-in are installed on the same machine. So if the
fix I made to our code doesn't work, one option would be to uninstall
all Java components from your computer and do a fresh install of the
latest runtime environment.
Let me know how/if this works. Thanks for the feedback and for your
patience.
Best regards,
Jeff Hall

Subject: Re: Registration with Lowell Education Online
Hello Jeff:
So far, I have been unable to launch a LOPARC session. I repeatedly
get the following error message:
"Exception: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: LPRemote.class"
My browser is MS Internet Explorer version 6.0.2800.1106 Initially I was
using Java Plug-In version 1.4.1 and received the error message. I went
to the Sun website and downloaded/installed Java Plug-In version 1.4.2
and still get the message.
Before I try to launch LOPARC, I can select Tools->Sun Java Console from
IE's pull down menu to check my Java Plug-In version. When I try to
launch LOPARC, I get the following message:
"Applet(s) in this HTML page requires a version of Java different from
the one the browser is currently using. In order to run the applet(s)
in this HTML page, a new browser session is required, press 'Yes' to
start a new browser session." If I select 'No', I get the following
message: "Java Plug-in detected JRE collission"
If I select 'Yes', a new browser window opens and then I get the first
message above.
Can you help?

Dear Michael Coucke:
Thank you for registering with Lowell Observatory's online education
site. We hope you enjoy using it and visit regularly as we continue to
expand its features and capabilities. This is a one-time welcoming
email.
For your records, your user ID is xxxxx, and your password is #########.
You'll need to supply these each time you log in.
This site gives you access to research-grade equipment including a 16"
telescope, CCD detector, and image processing software. Our online
archive of data is now available 24/7. The telescope will be opening to
our onsite users in May, and on select nights to the Internet at large
in June.
We have designed this site so you don't need a huge monitor or a
supercomputer to use it. All pages are viewable on screens running at
800x600 resolution or higher. To use LOPARC, you'll need a Java-enabled
browser with the Java 1.4 plug-in installed. If you don't have the
plug-in, you'll be prompted to download it the first time you attempt to
connect. This is an admittedly large (9 MB) but one-time-only download.
This site works correctly under Internet Explorer version 5 or higher.
If you use Netscape, you must be running version 6 or higher, and
display or applet behavior anomalies may occur.
If at any time you can't connect to our server, simply try again later.
We do experience several power outages each year, particularly during
Flagstaff's summer thunderstorm season. Our server is fully protected
and backed up, and can be quickly brought back on line, but any active
user sessions will be lost. Thanks for your patience during these
inevitable downtimes.
Your questions, comments, suggestions, and bug reports about this site
are always welcome. On behalf of the LOPARC development team, thanks
for signing up!

Flagstaff, ArizonaHi Mike,
I see this in your logs:
Java(TM) Plug-in: Version 1.4.2_01
Using JRE version 1.4.2_01 Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM
User home directory = C:\WINDOWS
Proxy Configuration: Manual Configuration
Proxy: http=proxy,https=proxy,ftp=proxy,gopher=proxy
Proxy Overrides:
I just helped my Dad set up his computer with a new
cable modem, and had the situation where we couldn't
access any secure Web sites. The cable folks had us
disable the proxy. It looks like the error message is
saying it can't find your proxy server, and the logs
you posted say that you've decided to configure your
proxy manually, rather than using the settings from
IE (which is how mine is set up in the plugin
control panel.)
Could that be the problem?
