Java as a Web Technology is Living on Borrowed Time

Java’s change in market status from a viable web technology to what it is nowundesirable legacy codeis astonishing. Oracles recent patch for Javas zero-day flaw puts one more nail in the coffin. Zero-day status is assigned to flaws that are currently being exploited by hackers, and for which there is no available fix. A little […]

Well to be brutally honest, I think you'd be better off sticking with Flash if this is a critical project... it would be a great exercise for learning Java, but would probably take w-a-y-y-y-y-y more effort than doing a similar multimedia presentation in flash.
(I haven't used Director, so can only talk about Flash here) - as you know, Flash is really a very powerful authoring tool that allows the user to do very complex animations very easily, whereas Java is a lower-level programming language that is infinitely more flexible, but comparatively more developer-intensive when it comes to producing user interface stuff. Java might be a viable option if you have to do stuff that flash can't, like very complex interactivity, or pulling info from a database etc (although maybe Flash 5 can even talk to databases now??? I don't know)
You can get tools to help you build Java user interfaces using "drag & drop" methods, and these tools will automatically generate the code for you, but (a) this means you're not really learning java, and (b) flash would still be less labor-intensive (and probably more impressive to your end users)
In summary - I'm not knocking Java or Flash - I love 'em both; it's just that Flash is better suited for certain things, and Java is better suited for others...
PS - nice website, but Portfolios shouldn't have an apostrophe before the "s" ;-)

  • Re-Learning Java Web Technologies

    Hi
    For the last 2 years, I have been developing ASP.NET applications. Therefore, I have not followed any new developments within Java industry.
    However, now I just want to re-learn Java web technologies.
    Therefore, could you kindly inform me whats the best book that can give me a good ground intp Java web / Enterprise development.
    Thanks

    Thanks for the answer.
    When I was doing ASP.NET development, I found these 2 books useful:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1861008031/026-2514404-8364464?v=glance&n=266239
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1861008163/026-2514404-8364464?v=glance&n=266239
    These books showed how to develop a full working website with asp.net.
    I wonder if there are similar books for Java. I am not a beginner with Servlets or JSP. I just want to know how to put together a full working website with the latest Java technologies.
    Core Servlets and JSPs is definitely a very good book.
    Kind regards

  • Best combination of technologies for Java db-supported web application?

    Hi everyone!
    I was given the task to develop a Java database-supported web application and am now wondering what combination of technologies would best fit my requirements.
    Basically, I am supposed to transform an "Excel-based" application into a Java-based web application that can be run in a browser in our intranet (I know, that's what a web application is supposed to do).
    The Excel application consist of an Excel sheet that holds all the data and a VBA form, that shows and lets you edit all the details/fields of a row and lets you navigate through the rows. Furthermore there are certain macros to filter the data table.
    Now, to transform the application, all data from Excel will be moved to an Oracle relational database and I want to rebuild the functionality with Java.
    Consequently, the Java application is intended to...
    - output the table as is in the browser
    - easily let you filter the data of the table
    - let you create (and save) custom filters
    - show detail view of a row
    - navigate through the rows of the (filtered) table
    - save the data that is entered/edited/deleted in the detail view back to the table in the database
    So, what are the best (and easiest to use) tools and technologies to develop such an application?
    Currently my reasearch has led me to the following conclusions:
    *1.* Architecture: I need a three-tier client-server application, which lead us to using the J2EE platform, right?
    *2.* For the persistence layer I somehow have to map the database table to a Java object,
    - either doing it completely manually (coding) using JDBC
    - or using EJB3 / Java Persistence API / Hibernate to get at least the getters and setters auto-generated, right?
    Please, correct me whenever i got something wrong!
    Oracle JDeveloper supports the mapping process with a wizard when using EJB3 and JPA
    (http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/obe1013jdev/10131/ejb_and_jpa/master-detail_pagewith_ejb.htm)
    Is there something comparable available for Eclipse?
    *3.* I'd like to use Java Server Faces for the UI. Besides the reference implementation there are several other implementations with additional components for e.g. displaying tables. There are:
    - Apache MyFaces Trinidad (former ADF Faces, although ADF Faces looks different/has different style sheet than Trinidad?)
    - NetBeans Visual Web tools (which look quite nice in the tutorial, but require the NetBeans IDE, I guess?! Tutorial: http://www.netbeans.org/kb/60/web/web-jpa.html
    *4.* What IDE would you recommend? Should have a WYSIWYG editor for the JSF files and should support me as much as possible as a Java Learner!
    - JDeveloper
    - Eclipse (+Plugins?)
    - NetBeans
    - MyEclipse (only if there is a free version out there, I have read about an Eclipse plug-in, but don't know if that was free...)
    *5.* Do you know some good and easy-to-understand tutorials covering this problem?
    *6.* What other aspects should I think of? Are there certain technologies for the business logic or just normal JavaBeans? What about SessionBeans and ManagedBeans?
    Any help, answers, ideas, explanations, comments, recommendations, will be highly appreciated!
    Cheers,
    Chris

    Thanks paulcw, for your quick reply and helpful comments!
    The whole thing is getting bigger than I thought...
    Actually this is a 1-man-project, that I am supposed to realise for small department during my internship in a big company.
    Maybe a more detailed description of the structure may help you to understand what I actually need.
    The table of concern, is an overview of certain projects inside the company and read-only, as it is a view on another database uniting data relevant for the department.
    Then there is a second table for additional data (specific for the department) for each project. This data has to be entered, modified, deleted with the new application, while the data from the first table is only displayed.
    1) In this case, is AJAX / JavaScript still necessarily needed?
    2) EJB and Hibernate sound like overkill to me as well, but what would be the alternatives? JDBC, SQL queries and rowSets? And are the first mentioned really so hard to use?
    3) Do you have any recommendations on how to solve the multiple access problem (I'm sure, I'm not the only one with this kind of problem...)?
    Thanks to everyone in advance!
    Chris

  • Java EE 5 Web Tier Proposed Final Draft

    We're pleased to announce the availability of the Public Review of the next versions of the specifications for the Java Web tier. This includes Servlet, JavaServer Pages (JSP), the JSP Standard Tag Library (JSTL) and JavaServer Faces (Faces). Servlet is being developed under JSR-154, JSP 2.1 is developed under JSR-245, JSTL is developed under JSR-052 and Faces 1.2 is developed under JSR-252. The expert groups are working together to improve the alignment between these these powerful web technologies.
    Building on the work that was accomplished with the Early Draft Review, this Public Review covers two additional areas that required better integration between JSP and Faces: - Tree Creation and Content Interweaving - Deferred expressions nested within iteration tags

  • Help please! Java application and web application...

    Hi,
    I have a problem with inserting a java application (Main.java) in a web application(index.jsp).
    I found a source demo of a drag and drop application on the Internet, but now I want to
    have the drag and drop application work in a Jpanel/JFrame in a webapplication.
    The drag and drop application code:

    }This application works with JFrame, but I want to display the JFrame in a webapplication (JSP Page).
    I'm using Netbeans 6.0 (GlassFish) to create webapplication using Visual Web JavaServer Faces.
    So in summary:
    How can i display the drag and drop application into a JFrame (better in a JPanel) in a webapplication (index.jsp)??
    Hope you can help...
    Thanks in advance...
    Greetings,
    Rajsh

    So have an applet that opens a JFrame... JSP or not has nothing to do with it, since it's nothing but HTML the client gets.
    You can't have a JFrame embedded in an HTML page. And if you could have an applet but don't know how to get that copied code to fit inside (I mean, content pane is content pane), you might want to consider learning how to do that.

  • Using the Model Facade Pattern in a Java EE 5 Web application

    Hi,
    Yutaka and I did a Tech tip
    http://java.sun.com/mailers/techtips/enterprise/2006/TechTips_Nov06.html#2 on using a model facade pattern in Java EE 5 web-only applications recently. We got some questions about it, and these were some of the questions raised...
    Question 1) the first part of the tech tip(it has two articles in it) http://java.sun.com/mailers/techtips/enterprise/2006/TechTips_Nov06.html showed how to access Java Persistence objects directly from a JSF managed bean, is this a good practice?
    Question 2) when to use a facade(as mentioned in the second part of tech tip) ?
    and maybe
    Question 3) why doesn't the platform make this easier and provide the facade for you?
    Briefly, I will take a shot at answering these three questions
    Answer 1) You can access Java persistence directly from your managed beans, but as your application grows and you start to add more JSF managed beans or other web components(servlets, JSP pages etc) that also directly access Java Persistence objects, you will start to see that you are cutting/pasting similiar code to handle the transactions and to handle the Java Persistence EntityManager and other APIs in many places. So for larger applications, it is a good practice to introduce a model facade to centralize code and encapsulate teh details of the domain model management
    Answer 2) IAs mentioned in answer 1, its good to use a model facade when your application starts to grow. For simple cases a spearate model facade class may not be needed and having managed beans do some of the work is a fast way to jumpstart you application development. But a facade can help keep the code clean and easier to maintain as the aplication grows.
    Answer 3) First note that both of the articles in the tech tip were about pure web apps(not using any EJBs) and running on the Java EE5 platform. Yes it would be nice if a facility like this was made available for web-only applications(those not using EJBs). But for web-only applications you will need to use a hand-rolled facade as we outlined in the tech tip. The Java EE platform does provide a way to make implementing a facde easier though, and the solution for that is to use a Session Bean. This solution does require that you use ythe EJB container and have a Session Bean facade to access your Java Persistence objects and manage the transactions. The EJB Session Facade can do a lot of the work for you and you dont have to write code to manage the transactions or manage the EntityManager. This solution was not covered in this tech tip article but is covered in the Java BluePrints Solutions Catalog for Perssitence at
    https://blueprints.dev.java.net/bpcatalog/ee5/persistence/facade.html in the section "Strategy 2: Using a Session Bean Facade" . Maybe we can cover that in a future tech tip.
    Please ask anymore questions about the tech tip topic on this forum and we will try to answer.
    hth,
    Sean

    Hi Sean,
    I'm working on an implementation of the Model Facade pattern where you can possibly have many facades designed as services. Each service extends a basic POJO class which I'm calling CRUDService: its short code is provided below for your convenience.
    The CRUDService class is meant to generalize CRUD operations regardless of the type of the object being used. So the service can be called as follows, for example:
    Job flightAtt = new Job();
    SERVICE.create(flightAtt);
    Runway r = (Runway) SERVICE.read(Runway.class, 2);
    Employee e = (Employee) SERVICE.read(Employee.class, 4);
    SERVICE.update(e);
    SERVICE.delete(r);SERVICE is a Singleton, the only instance of some service class extending CRUDService. Such a class will always include other methods encapsulating named queries, so the client won't need to know anything about the persistence layer.
    Please notice that, in this scenario, DAOs aren't needed anymore as their role is now distributed among CRUDService and its subclasses.
    My questions, then:
    . Do you see any obvious pitfalls in what I've just described?
    . Do you think traditional DAOs should still be used under JPA?
    . It seems to me the Model Facade pattern isn't widely used because such a role can be fulfilled by frameworks like Spring... Would you agree?
    Thanks so much,

  • How can I call a java object from Web dynpro ABAP application?

    I made Web dynpro ABAP application and posted it to SAP EP.
    For certain business purpose, we need to call external 3rd party java object using 3rd party's java api in Web dynpro application.
    Is there anybody who experienced this kind of java interface issue?
    I know Web dynpro Java environment can fully support this kind of requirement. but regarding Web dynpro ABAP, I couldn't find any clue for this.
    Any comment or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Raymond, ABAP Consultant

    if you have jco configured, then you can make calls to java api from ABAP .

  • Best Option to learn Java: Search the Web, Books or Real Training

    Good Evening People,
    I came to the following conclusion during my 4 weaks of trying to just connect and read a MySql Database, to read a CVS file.
    It seems that you get some leads, but never the full answer.
    So I am asking what will be my best Option, as I can see people on the Forum sort of give you some direction, but they want you do figure the answer out for yourself. Which I suppose you deserve as you might have started off with the same frustrations.
    So what fo you suggest I do to limit my frustration:
    Web Search drive me to a level of uncontrollable frustration, is this realle a complete solution.?
    I bought books each costing me over R600.00, still the mistery remains on how to do simple functions.?
    Should I rather spend some money and do a Course ?
    Please if you have walk the road and have the correct answer I will appreciate it.
    If it is a course, what will it be ??
    I am in the Gauteng Area.
    Regards
    Judy

    I don't know what books you've bought and in what way they're not meeting your needs. Here's my standard list of web resources and books. At least one of the books is available online, free I think. Take a look at them and see which ones best fit your needs.
    However, if you expect to just be able to cherry pick bits of Java to learn as you go, without first spending time and effort working through the basics, you're in for a disappointment.

    Sun's [New To Java Center|http://java.sun.com/learning/new2java/index.html].Includes an overview of what Java is, instructions for setting up Java, an intro to programming (that includes links to the above tutorial or to parts of it), quizzes, a list of resources, and info on certification and courses.

    JavaRanch. To quote the tagline on their homepage: "a friendly place for Java greenhorns." FAQs, forums (moderated, I believe), sample code, all kinds of goodies for newbies. From what I've heard, they live up to the "friendly" claim.
    Bruce Eckel's [Thinking in Java|http://mindview.net/Books/DownloadSites] (Available online.)

    with the javaalmanac.com site does it cover everything in the book or is there a lot more in the book to make it worth buying? thanks

  • sql:setDataSource in Java EE 6 web project

    I'm trying to figure out how to use <sql:setDataSource> within a (Java EE 6) web project that does not contain a web.xml deployment descriptor. In a previous version of the project, I was able to connect to the database using:
    web.xml
    <resource-ref>
        <res-ref-name>jdbc/myDatabase</res-ref-name>
        <res-type>javax.sql.DataSource</res-type>
        <res-auth>Container</res-auth>
        <res-sharing-scope>Shareable</res-sharing-scope>
    </resource-ref>
    JSP page
    <sql:query var="subjects" dataSource="jdbc/myDatabase">
        SELECT subject_id, name FROM Subject
    </sql:query>However, in the current EE6 version, I've not included a web.xml file (and so there are no <resource-ref> tags). I've added the following to the JSP Page, but I'm receiving an error when deploying to GlassFish:
    Unable to get connection, DataSource invalid: "java.sql.SQLException: No suitable driver found for jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/MyNewDatabase"
    <sql:setDataSource
        url="jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/MyNewDatabase"
        driver="com.mysql.jdbc.Driver"
        user="root"
        password="nbuser"
        var="db"/>
    <sql:query var="subjects" dataSource="${db}">
        SELECT subject_id, name FROM Subject
    </sql:query>The <resource-ref> tags are not required when using <sql:setDataSource> with url and driver attributes, correct? Does anyone have any suggestions?
    thank you

    I do know that the previous version of the project works fine, and that the "mysql-connector-java-5.1.6-bin.jar" file is contained in my server's lib folder.
    Just for clarity's sake, how can I be sure that the MySQL driver jar in on the classpath?
    Many thanks for replying.

  • About the installation of  "semantic web technology" on Oracle database 11g

    Dear Oracle Semantic Technology Users:
    Recently I am evaluating the Semantic Web technology supported by oracle database 11g, but when I try to install this technology according to the document "Semantic Technologies Developer's Guide" under "Product Documentation: Oracle® Spatial Resource Description Framework (RDF) 11g Release 1 (11.1) Manual," I logged in by "sys as sysdba", and executed the script $ORACLE_HOME/md/admin/catsem11i.sql, the SQL Plus console shows no error and installed successfully, but when I check it on SQL Developer interface, I can't find the schema, views and tables related to the semantic web functions which should be created.
    Then I tried to execute the same sql script (catsem11i.sql) by SQL developer, it came out a window and ask me the value of COMP_FILE, and the execution is interrupted.
    So I would like to ask that do you have any idea, what kind of problems or mistake could it happen? I installed Oracle 11g on windows XP platform with the enterprise edition default installation.
    Thanks for your help in advance :)

    Hi,
    Actually, you are pretty close :) You need to invoke sem_apis.create_sem_network('<YOUR_TABLESPACE_NAME>');
    After that, please check the following tutorial for a good end-to-end example.

    Hi All,
    We are moving Web Dynpro Java timesheet to Web Dynpro ABAP timesheet.
    what changes needs to be done from EP side?
    I have made Web Dynpro ABAP iView calling Web Dynpro ABAP timesheet and linked it with page.
    But It is showing an error 'Web Dynpro Application CATDATARECORD does not exist'.
    Please suggest what other changes needs to be done.

    Hi Anurag,
    I have added new Web Dynpro ABAP iView to the same page in which Web Dynpro JAVA iview was added and made ABAP iview visible.
    And this page is already assigned to role.
    How should I link this ABAP iview so that it get replace by the Web Dynpro JAVA iview.
    And the  application name (CATDATARECORD) is correct and Web Dynpro JAVA is using the same application.
    But now we want new time timesheet for that what changes needs to be done?
    Please suggest.

  • What the mechanism of the Java Proxy for Web Services in WLS 8.1

    Hi, all;
    I try to find out how the java proxy of web service in weblogic server 8.1
    works. Suppose I use the java Proxy of a WebSerice in a client application whatever
    whithin or outside the application of the web service, does the proxy actually:
    1. translate my java arguments objects in XML to create SOAP msg,
    2. then send the msg across the network, and web service also response SOAP msg,
    3. then proxy translate it into return value of the method call ?
    If that is true , the Java Proxy seems very inefficient, right?
    Can any body tell me how the proxy works ?
    regards,
    shannon

    Hi Shannon,
    The type of proxy I'm familiar with is at the http connection level and
    associated with the networking properties in the JDK, See:
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/guide/net/properties.html
    Your question may be related to JWS proxies, See:
    http://edocs.bea.com/workshop/docs81/doc/en/workshop/guide/howdoi/howUseTheJavaProxyForAWebService.html
    You may want to ask this question in the workshop newsgroup.
    Hope this helps,
    Bruce
