JAVA Based alternative to Oracle BPEL
Hi all,
Do we have any "JAVA" based framework to impelement a SOA process. We have a simple workflow which call few web services and a human task is involved. We don't want to go for Oracle SOA Suite for some unavoidable issues.
At the end of the day we want a JAVA based solution for our workflows which can be installed on a single standalone OC4J server without bringing in the BPEL Integration Server into the picture. Since SUN and Oracle have now merged , are they rolling out a java avatar of Oracle SOA Suite.
If anyone knows any java based alternative to implement a workflow please let us know-
thanks and regards
vishal
well..you could have a look at some opensource bpel engines

Oracle BPEL Worklist application on Tomcat
Can the default BPEL worklist application be deployed to Tomcat? Has anyone tried that or instructions listed out some where?
We would like to deploy the web tier deployed to a seperate Tomcat box (web tier includes a web application developed, oracle bpel worklist application)
ThanksThank you. I am not sure how to have wf_config_client.xml correctly defined and deployed. Can this be elaborated a little more please?
I tried to deploy the worklist application supplied in the samples. I ran into a lot of exceptions and continued to add the runtime libraries as needed. I followed some of the applicable instructions under 16.5.1.5 of BPEL Developer's guide as well.
I can see the login page of the worklist after this struggle, but when I try to login it comes back to the same page. I see a exceptions thrown on the tomcat console.
I think main errors that catch my attention are:
1. Invalid configuration file wf_config.xml ORABPEL-30028
2. Error in invoking user metadata service ORABPEL-30720
I really appreciate any help to go forward.
Thanks.

Thanks for the reply since I am quite new to BPEl can you elaborate a bit on this .
What I did was
1. I created a Async BPEL process in JDeveloper and in the same project I put my servlet code and html part when I deploy it on the server and ascess it the welcome jsp is displayed when I click submit on wecome.jsp it forwards to servlet and there the error originates .
2 If instead I deploy the BPEl process seperately and the try to access the BPEL process using my JDeveloper java code I don't get any error it works fine.
3 I have included config and schema folders in source path . wf_client_config.xml,user-properties.xml and wf-config.xml is also present in the source folder.
4 Along with this the jars needed have been also added.
So when I deploy the BPEL process created in 1 above from Jdeveloper it creates a .ear in j2ee\home\applications and the deploys it .This .ear doesn't has any .class files .
I take bpelclasses.jar from the .jar which is created when I compile the project and put it in the j2ee\home\applib folder and made an entry for it in the server.xml file.After this it is able to get .class files.
If there is any alternate way to do the same thing kindly tell me .
Thanks

It seems that you are using a custom security provider and the weblogic server is not able to find the class / jar file that contains the class.
java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: Failed to load class com.msl.security.providers.SessionPrincipal]
Make sure you have all the required jar files in the server classpath.
You can use the JarScan utility to find the jar that contains the class.
Refer the below link regarding the jarScan.

JAVA API of Oracle BPEL, to access the "Task Form"(JSP) of a human task.
Hi,
Are there any JAVA API of Oracle BPEL, to access the "Task Form"(JSP) of a human task, to render the task form inside the custom worklist application.
Thanks,
NagaI guess you mean accessing the task details and the payload from the java API.
Refer the below blog it will provide you the details

Oracle BPEL Java Client API: Reading Configurations dynamically
We have a requirement to use Oracle BPEL Java client API to control the BPEL instances at the runtime, from an ADF BC Application. is there any possibility to read the configurations/properties that are required to look up (using 'oracle.soa.management.facade.Locator' ) the BPEL Process Manager/Server from connections.xml/adf-config.xml ?
In other terms, as we need the details like the bpel server URL, security credentials..etc to lookup the BPEL server and instances using the BPEL java client API, how can we read these details from the ADF standard config files like Connections.xml/adf-config.xml instead of hard coding them in the Java program.
Edited by: 899479 on Feb 4, 2013 6:02 AMThe api's for BPEL / Workslow canbe found here:

Error message when listing activities with Oracle BPEL Control and Java API
I'm implementing some BPEL processes in an Oracle Application server 10.1.3.3 environment.
I use the Oracle BPEL Process Manager Client Java API to access some BPEL instances but when I want to list their activities with IInstanceHandle.listActivities() (I've tested the IInstanceHandle and it contains an open process instance) I receive the following error message:
"Activity error:ORABPEL-04003 Cannot find work items. An attempt to fetch the work items using the where condition "cikey = ? AND ( wi_state = 1 OR wi_state = 2 OR wi_state = 3 ) " from the datastore has failed. The exception reported is: [ODBC S1002] invalid column number Please check that the machine hosting the datasource is physically connected to the network. Otherwise, check that the datasource connection parameters (user/password) is currently valid. sql statement: SELECT * FROM admin_list_wi WHERE ci_domain_ref = 0 AND cikey = ? AND ( wi_state = 1 OR wi_state = 2 OR wi_state = 3 )"
When I try to use the BPEL control to list the activities I also receive an error, which I think is related:
"[javax.servlet.ServletException]
Cannot find work items.
An attempt to fetch the work items using the where condition "" from the datastore has failed. The exception reported is: [ODBC S1002] invalid column number
Please check that the machine hosting the datasource is physically connected to the network. Otherwise, check that the datasource connection parameters (user/password) is currently valid.
sql statement: SELECT * FROM admin_list_wi WHERE ci_domain_ref = 0 ORDER BY wi_modify_date desc"
Has anyone found a solution to this error? There are a couple of developers in our team that has the same problem and also have a similar problem when trying to purge instances from the BPEL control. The problem started when we patched to 10.1.3.3.When you upgraded to 10.1.3.3 did you run the SQL scripts that modified the SOA suite schemas?

Oracle BPM Suite : Oracle BPM vs Oracle BPEL PM
Hi All,
I am new in Oracle BPM and how some experience learning how to use Oracle BPM. Now when reading about the components products inside "Oracle BPM Suite" in detail , I am some what confuse about :
1) In What situation that we should use "Oracle BPM" rather than "Oracle BPEL PM" ?
2) In What situation that we should use "Oracle BPEL PM" rather than "Oracle BPM" ?
I am confuse about these issue since both of the products come together when we order "Oracle BPM Suite" and both of the products can be used for "HUman Workflow Applications" as well
Could you please help clarify these issues ? Thank you very much in advance.
Best Regards
Pearapon S.Hi Pearapon,
You’ve raised a good point.
Every once in a while, I see an article written by a BPM pundit that attempts to make the case that the BPMN approach (Oracle BPM uses this) is superior to the BPEL approach or vice versa. Here's one example on InfoQ - http://www.infoq.com/articles/bpelbpm. Its title "Why BPEL is not the holy grail for BPM" is very misleading. This is a typical example of an author sitting in either the BPMN or BPEL camp criticizing the other camp's standard. In this article, the author attempts to indict all BPMN to BPEL conversion attempts based on the author's poorly drawn process.
Although I know that controversy boosts readership of these types of articles, in my opinion it’s not a “vs.”. Both the BPMN and BPEL standards have strengths when used with certain use cases.
Here’s one scenario where Oracle BPM and Oracle BPEL PM are synergistic. My background is with Oracle BPM, but I’ve used Oracle BPEL PM on a project for the orchestration of composite services. I used Oracle BPM to model the business processes understood by executives, managers, subject matter experts, business analysts and developers. Using the same simple role based activity flow process diagram, everyone understands what the business problem is and how the process will work solve the problem. The Oracle BPM Automatic activities in the process hit Oracle BPEL processes. Here we used the BPEL processes to hit and orchestrate the underlying IT components . We exposed the BPEL processes using the customer’s service bus and we invoked it from the Oracle BPM process’s Automatic activity (Oracle BPM -> OSB -> Oracle BPEL). Alternatively, If the customer had not had a service bus, I could have invoked the BPEL process directly from the Oracle BPM process via a cataloged web service in Oracle BPM.
Hope this helps,

[Integrated SOA Gateway] Publish Java based web service
Welcome!
Lately I have been trying to publish Java based web service through Integrated SOA Gateway. The documentation states that:
+"Custom interface definitions can be created for various interface types including custom interface definitions for XML Gateway Map, Business Event, PL/SQL, Concurrent Program, Business Service Object, Java (except for Java APIs for Forms subtype) and Composite Service for BPEL type."+ (Integrated SOA Gateway Developer's Guide Release 12.1, "Creating and Using Custom Integration Interfaces")
After familiarizing myself with $FND_TOP/bin/irep_parser.pl and $FND_TOP/bin/FNDLOAD tools, I have started coding my POJOs. Initially I have come up with three classes - request/response objects and service implementation. Service implementation has been annotated with "@rep:X" descriptors according to "Java Annotations" section of the documentation. While invoking $FND_TOP/bin/irep_parser.pl I have received errors about class resolution. My solution was to transform request and response types to static inner classes. This way I ended up with one *.java source file (see below).
* Sample ISG Service.
* @rep:scope public
* @rep:product AP
* @rep:displayname My Custom ISG Service.
public class MyService {
public static class Request {
private String id;
public void setId(String id) {
this.id = id;
public String getId() {
return id;
public static class Response {
private String data;
public void setData(String data) {
this.data = data;
public String getData() {
return data;
* Sample operation.
* @param request Request Object.
* @return Return Object.
* @rep:displayname Test operation.
* @rep:category BUSINESS_ENTITY SAMPLE_SERVICE
public MyService.Response testOperation(MyService.Request request) {
MyService.Response response = new MyService.Response();
response.setData("Some Data");
return response;
ILDT file has been successfully created and uploaded. However, I could not see the "Generate WSDL" button on Integrated Repository website. Is there any particular interface or superclass that my service implementation should extend? I have reviewed "PurchaseOrderSDO" example posted in the developer's guide (page 407), but I couldn't come up with a working solution. Could you provide me with more detailed tutorial/example? Which documentation sections should I read again?
After searching through forum, I have spotted $FND_TOP/bin/soagenerate.sh script, and thought that lack of "Generate WSDL" button was an EBS defect. After running the script, I have received an error:
Error in Service Generation.
ServiceGenerationError: Interface Type (JAVA) Interface SubType (null) is not supported.
oracle.apps.fnd.soa.util.SOAException: ServiceGenerationError: Interface Type (JAVA) Interface SubType (null) is not supported.

at oracle.apps.fnd.soa.provider.wsdl.ServiceGenerator.generateSOAService(ServiceGenerator.java:75)
at oracle.apps.fnd.soa.provider.wsdl.ServiceGenerator.generateSingleService(ServiceGenerator.java:88)
at oracle.apps.fnd.soa.provider.wsdl.ServiceGenerator.main(ServiceGenerator.java:419)
I would be grateful for any suggestions. Has anyone published Java based web service through ISG?
Best regards,
LukaszI tried the following as per Oracle support and able to generate the wsdl though, but not invoke the webservices.
1. Applied the patch 8607523
2. Took the translator.jar file from the patch 8857799 and replaced the current translator.jar file
3. Deploy the adapters.
$FND_TOP/bin/txkrun.pl -script=CfgOC4JApp -applicationname=pcapps
-oc4jpass=welcome -runautoconfig=No -

In "10gr2" that means AS 10.1.2.0.2 (plus Patch set): AS Infrastructure + AS BI&Forms installation (enterprise edition) or the standalone Forms and Reports installation (EE or separate licensing). You also need the Developer Suit (Reports Builder). OFM "11gr1" suite has some version of Reports Services but I don't know the available packages and installation types. -
Problem to start BPEL Console of Oracle BPEL Process Manager 10.1.3.1.0
Hi everyone!
I'm writing to yours because I installed Oracle BPEL Process Manager 10.1.3.1.0 but I can't start BPEL Console. I tried to start it by the option menu of Windows XP and by Developer Prompt, but I get a HTTP 404 Not Found page. When I was installing the universall installer told me that it wasn't possible to set ORACLE_HOME variable because it had a value older than 1023 characteres. So, I continue the installation but I can't start the BPEL Console. The Dos Console teld me sometimes when I put http://localhost:9700/BPELConsole..timed out. So, tell me how to resolve that problem.
I'll be waiting your responses.

Greetings.Hi,
you said:
it wasn't possible to set ORACLE_HOME variable because it had a value older than 1023 characteres
What do you mean with older than 1023 chars?
I think the easiest way is to uninstall the BPEL Console and run the installer again with correcting the ORACLE_HOME problem... -
Anyone knows if it is possible to install correctly Oracle BPEL Process Manager in Windows Vista. I can install the product using Windows XP compatibility mode, and the software seems to install, but some problems appear later. For example the STOP SERVER script doesnt work.
Right now only Java SDK v 1.6 Standard Edition is certified to work in Windows Vista, but oracle BPEL is not using that version of Java.
Any comments about it??
