Java card developpment kit

Hello,
I have problem starting java card tools, when i tape "converter" for example in command line, it tall "G:\program" unknown command. I think that that i set the environment variable as described in the manual.

hi mohammed,
this is a issue in windows systems while handling paths having SPACE in it. there are two workarounds for this.
1. As Dmitri said, you can use path with no SPACES in it.
or
2. while giving paths with SPACES, put the entire path in double qoutes.
eg; "G:\Program files\JavaCard2.2.1"

Additonal installation
- you need to download Java Communicatons API version 2.o for Windows at http://java.sun.com/products/javacomm/downloads/index.html
- unzip the downloaded file javacom20-win20.zip
- copy comm.jar and javax.com.properties to %JAVA_HOME%\lib
- copy win32com.dll to %JAVA_HOME%\bin
Configuration of Environment
- Activate System under Control Panel
- Click Environment Variable button under Advance Tab.
- Check that JAVA_HOME and JC21_HOME are there under User Variables for user123
- Create a new enviroment by clicking New button under User Variables and Enter "CLASSPATH" for Variable Name and ".;c:\j2sdk1.4.1_04\lib\comm.jar for Variable Value ( the ".;" is important for the entry and varies according to your JAVA_HOME)
Modifying %JC21_HOME%\samples\build_samples.bat
- Next you need to modify the compiler option in build_samples.bat
- Use editor to look for the portion "Compile Sample" and add "- target 1.1" to every statements here. A sample is listed below:
%JAVA_HOME%\bin\javac -target 1.1 %JCFLAGS% src\com\sun\javacard\samples\HelloWorld\*.java
You may proceed to test the demo codes as instrucrted in the User Guide.
I hope the above will help those who are keen to have a head start in Java Card Developemnet.

Java Card Development Kit 2.2.1 error !!

when i run jcwde in the DOS prompt after installing Java Card Development Kit 2.2.1,I got this error message:
it returens Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: Card
Any idea about this error

Help about running Java Card developement Kit Demo

I am following the Java Card development kit step by step. I have set all environments but I could not run the demo at all. D:\JAVACARD\SAMPLES\SRC\DEMO>
if I type "jcwde jcwde.app" at the demo directory, it tells me that, jcwde is not an intenal or batch file command. when I copied the jcwde.bat from bin directory to demo directory, it run but a lot of erros.
I will be glad if somebody can help to overcome this initial and very important steps in my adventure to smart card.

ISO7816 for the Java Card Development Kit

I'm having problems compiling the sample applets for the Java Card Development Kit (2.1.2). I keep getting the error that anything related to ISO7816 is not recognized. Is there something else I need to have in order to run this?

You must have not Downloaded the Java Card API211 &Must not Have Given the class path.

It used to be

which is still on-line, but the links there are dead and sometime to obsolete stuff.

If you don't have those directories, obviously, you don't have the source release with cryptographic extensions. You have a different release.
The version you downloaded isn't a source release but you still have the full kit.
For the src release, contact $un for a license.

Use of Java Card Development Kit

Im a student doing a dissertation on Java Smart Card for a conversion Masters in Computing. I have been using the Java Card 2.1.2 Development Kit and User's guide. However, could anyone comment on the extent to which the kit is used in industry.
Is it superseded by other development kits/IDEs? Is it incorporated into proprietary IDEs.
Any feedback would be much appreciated.

The kit is used extensively in the industry.
When you buy a vendor's kit, they extend the Sun APIs and implement the JCRE based on the specifications.
Also when you purchase a kit, you get additional implementation like crypto and Global Platform.
Don't worry about incorporating kits into any IDE's. The applet's are very small and you can use any editor for it. A GOOD vendor kit will allow off card debugging/simulation. Gemplu$ has an implementation for Cafe, and Metrowerks has a JC IDE.

How to run the simple java card program in eclipse?

I am trying to run a simple HelloWorld program in eclipse 3.5 having java card development kit 2.2 installed in it.
Firstly,I go to the JCWDE tab and press start..then when trying to deploy that package its giving me error like " com.hw.HelloWorld: unsupported class file format of version 50.0." can any one help me in this what is this error???n how to resolve n run this program..

Hi,
It is because the converter works on byte code and it only supports a subset of the Java language (see the JC specifications). It is kind of like compiling you code on Java 6 and trying to run it on Java 5. The JCDK outlines the required compiler version.

IDES for writing Java card applets and converting the applets as CAP FILE.

I have developed a JAVA CARD APPLET , FindMFValueJCA.java . It gets compiles in net beans 6.0 But while converting the applet to CAP file i am getting some errors. Is there any other IDES which take care of converting the CAP files

What's the Java version you are using?
As the java card tool kit has version dependencies. If you are using java_card _kit 2.2.2 then 1.5 is fine.

1. how i am supposed to create applets to get the student id of particular student whose id is already registered in the database?
2. how to install them into the smart card?
3.what are the commands i am supposed to follow if other than APDU commands?
4.i found there is APDU commands but what do that each CLA,INS,p1,p2,Lc,le..commands used for?how can i use them in my creation of applets.i found the command varies for certain requirements.
5.if possible please help me with a small example so that i will start developing it.
can anyone help me in developing this application.i will be so helpful if anyone helps me in guiding me to develop the java card product.

If you want interoperability you could implement a standard like ISO7816 or IOS24727. This is a lot of work so you may just want to implement the proprietary you require for each operation you need (e.g. set student ID, get student ID etc).

The CLA byte gives information on the command you are sending such as secure messaging, command chaining, ISO or proprietary command
The INS is the instruction or command you are trying to perform
P1 and P2 are parameters to the command. These may not be required for each command but are able to be used to convey further information to the applet.
Lc is the length of the data field you are sending (e.g. for a PUT DATA command this would be the amount of data you are sending)
Le is the length of the data you expect to receive back from the card. If this is absent you do not expect the card to return any data, 0x00 means send all the data you have left (up to the limit of the response APDU)
5.if possible please help me with a small example so that i will start developing it.You can find example code in the Java Card Development Kit. There are a wide range of examples there that can help you get started.

Dear Sri,
We have compiler, linker etc for every language starting of from C or C++ or Java. JDK has all the tools necessary to develop and run a Java program. Similarly Java Card Development Kit has all the tools for developing and deploying a Java Card applet. But what an IDE does is too integrate all these tools and make it easier for the JavaCard programmer to develop his applets. Just like Eclipse is used for Java applet development.And not everytime the code is burned to the card. Its only during masking code is burned to the card, i.e if u can call it burning. Masking makes an applet permanent on the card.
