Java - Constant Network Activity - Eating up Internet Bandwidth!

Hi,
The Process "java"is constantly sending data (100-140 KB/sec) and receiving Data (2-4 KB/sec) 24x7.
I have terminated all "cloud" applications (iCloud, Google Drive, Dropbox and CrashPlan etc.). The total
Data sent is about 150 MB in less than 15 mins after a complete reboot eating up my internet bandwidth.
Upgraded to 10.8.3 and also the March 4th Apple update for Java 6.
Called AppleCare and they acknowledged the issue, but sent me off to a Java customer support line
who then turned me down (as I was not a licensed/commercial user of Java). Applecare was useless.
Anyone else having the same issue? How can I completely uninstall Java? Any help or insight is appreciated.
BR,
Raj

Bingo! That was it. Many thanks for connecting CrashPlan and Java. I thought exiting the CrashPlan application would turn this backup service off. But as you suggested CrashPlan runs a Java Daemon/Engine in the background even after exiting the CrashPlan application.
The below command effectively shutsdown the CrashPlan's Java background Engine and the network activity ceased immediately.
sudo launchctl unload /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.crashplan.engine.plist
(From CrashPlan's support site: http://support.crashplan.com/doku.php/recipe/stop_and_start_engine )
Many thanks Linc Davis.

  • Constant "network activity" in Lion, with NO internet connection

       Hey all,
I had searched and read a number of entries similar to this, but never a solution from anyone yet and unsure if someone has experienced this specifically.
I was doing some computer house cleaning and noticed that I had this constant Network Activity happening to the sum of 3-4KB/sec, all day long, regardless.
    Switched off wifi...still there.
    Rebooted.....still there.
Disconnected all devices, no wifi, no nothing....still there.
    No programs running....still there.
    Repaired permissions...still there.
    Checked Firewall....still there.
    Sharing turned off....still there.
    Printer sharing off....still there.
Checked and eliminated any start-up programs....still there.
Booted with Snow Leopard drive,(it is only the OS), and noticed NO network activity.
Installed Little Snitch, and honestly have no idea what it is telling me.
So, with a totally cut off Macbook Pro, with no programs running at all, and nothing I can see running in the back ground, no LAN or other sharing or networks....why would there be an unending 3-4KB/sec activity, but none at all in Snow Leopard?  Somewhere I have something installed, or a malware program, or something hitting the network regardless of if it is accessible or not.
    Anyone any guesses?
Running the last version of Lion, 10.7.5
    Thanks all.

Can't believe no one has experienced this?
If anyone could, take a look at your own Activity Monitor and post if you are NOT having this issue in Lion.
Here is a screen shot of AM and the typical constant 3KB/sec in/out.  I know it seems like nothing just idol chatter, but it is constant, as in all day long, no matter what.  Something seems very not right about that function.
Thanks all, any feed back is appreciated.

  • Constant network / internet activity

Once I updated to 10.8 my internet traffic has gone crazy. I have a capped isp- and I have used almost 10gb of internet traffic in 3 days!
In Activity Monitor, with Air Port turned on there is constant internet traffic both upload and download, usually hovering around 2-3 mb every 5 minutes or so (4.6 mb during posting of this topic!).… this has added up to gigs of traffic.
What is this and how can I stop it?
    Anyone else having this problem?
    Help!

Given signs of constant network activity, you might Reset Network Settings (network only). (Settings/General and scroll all the way down the page.)
You'll have to sign back in to your network once your device has rebooted. In my case, doing the Reset Network Settings thing stopped the constant network activity as reflected in the rolling network activity icon shown in the status bar at the top of the screen.

  • So I went to update my ipod on itunes....and a box appeared saying to make sure my network settings are correct and active, but the internet is working fine. Every device in my house has great internet connection. What do I do?

So I went ot update my ipod on itunes....and a box appeared saying to make sure the internet setting are correct and active, but my internet is working fine. What do I do?

    Sounds like this:
    Update Server
    Try:
    - Powering off and then back on your router.
    - iTunes for Windows: iTunes cannot contact the iPhone, iPad, or iPod software update server
    - Change the DNS to either Google's or Open DNS servers
    Public DNS — Google Developers
    OpenDNS IP Addresses
    - Try on another computer/network
    - Wait if it is an Apple problem

  • Network active, unable 2 establish a connection to internet, email, servers

For the last few months, I've had connection issues with my Mac Pro at work. Tech support (pc guys) have been unable to figure out the issue and attribute it to the network.
The ethernet connection is active and it sometimes works. The connections to our shared drive works most of the time. The email (via microsoft exchange server) works 50/50 and the internet browsers have the sketchiest connectivity.
A PC laptop connected to the same port has no issues. Other MAC users in this building are having the same issues but rely on the wireless connection when their ethernet is interrupted. I don't have an airport card on mine.
Other MACs on campus do not have any connectivity issues.
    Please help!

    It might not be DNS...
My MacPro has recently in the last several months just had period stoppages of Ethernet1.
I've been hassling with network stuff on my internet connection but twice today my MacPro just stopped talking. I can ping somethings but not others and Safari refuses to connect to anything. Email doesn't work etc.
The only thing I can sort of attribute it to and I might try is is that I have both a secure and unsecure network. My virus barrier stuff refused to work through my firewall so I setup the unsecure network on Ethernet2. Since doing that it is sort of like it just gets confused.
If I reboot the MacPro everything comes back alive just fine and when it is stopped if I switch over to my son's MacMini it is fine so I know its not my network or cable modem.
So I don't know if you have both ethernet connections plugged in, in your MacPro but I do and I'm going to try moving the unsecure one to see if the problem gets better.
When the problem happens its very difficult to fix. Only a reboot seems to cure it. I've disabled the Ethernet1 and reenabled it, unplugged, replugged the cable, etc... It just seems to totally die.
Hopefully disconnecting Ethernet2 will do the trick.

  • Tracking Internet/ Network Activity

Conky is showing me that I have a network activity of around 16 k/s, but I have no clue where that is coming from. I have a script running in conky which is supposed to get emails from Gmail, but it should only be fetching them in time periods of about 10 minutes.
Is there a way to keep track of what program is sending stuff out and receiving data? I have turned off all my messengers. Only Firefox is currently on with the Archlinux website being displayed (with scripts turned off).

    pacman -S lsof
    lsof -i -P

  • Store agent started to transfer large amounts of data, eating all my bandwidth.  Seemed to just start 5-6 days ago.

About5-6 days ago store agent started to continuously run, sending and receiving large amounts of data.  This eats all my bandwidth quickly, essentially rendering my internet access worthless since I have to use satellite internet.  I have tried stopping it in the Activity Monitor , but it restarts again. I thought I might have had a virus or something.  I downloaded trend micro for Mac, but found its core services essentially did the same thing. I uninstalled, but found that store agent is still running non stop. Ideas?

The storeagent process is a normal part of Mac OS X, not a virus. Remove Trend Micro, which is a quite poor choice for protecting yourself against malware in the first place (see the results of my Mac anti-virus testing 2014), and which isn't really necessary anyway (see my Mac Malware Guide).
As for what it might be doing, as babowa points out, it should be present when the App Store app is open, and at that time, it might be occupied with downloading updates or something similar. If you keep force-quitting it in Activity Monitor, that probably ruins whatever download it was working on, so it has to start all over again, perpetuating the cycle. In general, it is a very bad idea to force-quit processes that are part of Mac OS X without a very good reason and an understanding of what they are.
Go to System Preferences -> App Store:
You will probably want to turn off automatic download of newly available updates, as well as automatic download of apps purchased on other Macs (if you have other Macs). I do not advise turning off the master "Automatically check for updates" box, or the one for installing security updates, as disabling those will reduce the security of your system. These security updates are typically small, so they should have very little impact on your total internet usage.

  • Constant Wireless Activity with L7780

I have an Officejet Pro L7780 All-in-One connected wirelessly via WPA2 to my Linksys router. My computers runs Windows XP Pro SP3 and is hard-wired to the router.
I can print, etc. just fine but there seems to be almost constant communication activity between my computer and printer -- even when I am not printing. I can see the lights flashing on my router which tell me that my PC is talking to the printer every few seconds. I can see corresponding activity on my PC's Ethernet connection as well.
I have the HP Digital Imaging Monitor running in my notofication area.
My question is: Is this almost constant communication activity between my PC and the printer normal? I have never seen anything like it with hard-wired printers or any other printer that I can get to through the router like a shared network printer. If the activity is not normal, how do I go about getting it to settle down and only communicate when I am printing something?
    Thanks.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

the Digital Imaging Monitor(DIM) does query the printer regularly for updating the status of the printer. this way it can give you notifications if the printer is disconnected, or if the printer has any problems. if this is affecting the performance of your computer of your internet speed, then it is something to be worried about, though no such issues have been reported before.

  • Thanks this was very useful.. I have a brand new iphone 4s unlocked version from singapore and I am having the same problem constant network fluctuations, no service, call failed, invalid sim, sim failure, bars fluctuating from 5 - 3 - 2 - 1, no signal/ba

I have a brand new iphone 4s unlocked version from singapore and I am experiencing constant network fluctuations on my iphone , no service, call failed, invalid sim, sim failure, bars fluctuating from 5 - 3 - 2 - 1, no signal/bars searching etc... Ifeel miserable after trying out all the options changed multiple sims, tried multiple carriers, restored the phone back and have set-up as new device but the problem does not get solved... its is so frustrating that after investing on a world's most expensive phone you cannot enjoy the calling features which the phone offers which is the main thing you own the phone for.. Rest of the things are working.. The funniest part I am not able to make calls or receive calls but can access the internet..  I have tried every possible thing and really very frustrated with this iphone of mine...I hope the problem gets solved.. would anyone have any solutions to this problem.. Does it mean one should never update software as I hear that after updating to IOS.5.1 the problem has started coming and same has been with there.... Apple says its a hardware failure which is very difficult to digest as sometimes I get 5 bars and able to make and receive calls but 95% of the time I am unable to. If anyone has any solution I will be very happy if he or share can share the same. Many thanks. its so disgusting to experience this on top of this apple does not support global warranty for the phone as you need to go to the country from where you bought the phone for replacement.. Truly sad state of affairs.. very very very dissappointing.

Have a look at this it might help

  • Network activity report printing

I can't print multiple pages of the network activity report. When I view multiple pages under the print option, one page shows up with a line across the bottom of the page.
Having problems with my Comcast cable loosing internet connection and want to show them a report over a week's time but can't get more than a page to print. The screen report shows it all, just can't print it.
I'm running 3.11.9139.94. Computer is Vista home edition.

Hello billj, uninstall LELA and install Network Magic instead! LELA's print option doesn't work (based on what i've experienced). I tried Network Magic program and its printing option works!

  • [solved] network activity monitor

do someone know a good network activity and bandwidth monitor that show which program (or port) has which down- and upload rates?
i think of smth like htop or iotop. netstat shows only the connections and slurm or ethstat show the total rates.

yes, iftop is ok, but shows "unclear" information. found pktstat which seems to provide more infos about net activity.

Airport Express is connected directly to the internet & acts as WiFi transmitter for my two machines. I want to share music using iTunes between these machines (i.e. play music on my laptop while in bed).
Will streaming this music (music stored on the iMac) on my laptop use up internet bandwidth?
I did the "unplug test" and the machines still recognize eachother when the ethernet cable is disconnected.
My fear is that it still somehow will go through the internet if it can.
Not that it matters - but we are using borrowed bandwidth & have been asked specifically to not stream.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Essentially my question comes down to local network versus internet...Does homesharing via iTunes use the shared Internet at all or is it simply a wireless independent network that exists because of the AirPort Express?
If it is in fact independent, it shouldn't affect anyone's internet connection (except maybe other people using the AirPort Express??? but even this seems unlikely) - except mine.
It seems unlikely that my data from one computer would be projected into a cloud-type internet server and then back to another computer when the signal could simply be transmitted via the AirPort device.
This seems to me the obvious transmission path...but I wanted to be certain.
You seem to agree with me but the more we talk about it the more confused I'm getting.

  • CRM 2007 network Activity

We've recently tested the CRM 2007 impact on our network from a Citrix platorm and from the local desktop, with varying screen resolution settings to determine network bandwidth impact.  We noticed that while the session was completely idle, there was still network activity over the port we use for CRM ICWeb session connections to the tune of about 70000 bytes per minute for one session (approx 167 packets).
Can anybody advise what this traffic would be?  I have seen references to a network polling strategy, but no details.

    Hi,
You can use FM, CRM_ORDER_MAINTAIN to create follow up documents.
you need to fill the parameters.. ct_doc_flow, ct_input_fields ..
    See some sample code, below..
        CLEAR : ls_doc_flow, ls_doc_link .
        ls_doc_flow-ref_kind   = lc_ref_kind.
        ls_doc_flow-ref_handle = lc_ref_handle.
        ls_doc_link-objkey_a   = p_lv_guid. "Guid of Preceding Doc
        ls_doc_link-vona_kind  = 'A'.
        ls_doc_link-handle_b   = '1'.
        ls_doc_link-brel_kind  = 'A'.
        ls_doc_link-brel_mode  = 'A'.
        INSERT ls_doc_link INTO TABLE lt_doc_link.
        ls_doc_flow-doc_link = lt_doc_link.
        APPEND ls_doc_flow TO lt_doc_flow.
    Thanks,
    Sreekanth
