Java course on a Mac
Can i take this course using a Mac?
Your Model & Other Details profile information says iMac G5/Intel. If you mean to say you have both an iMac G5 and Intel that's one thing that could be clearer. If you think iMac G5s are Intel, you are mistaken. There is this user tip that explains the difference as it relates to Mac OS X 10.6 compatibility:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2126451
And thus how it relates to Java compatibility:
http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#technotes/tn2002/tn2110.html
That said, if your machine is 10.6 compatible, and not able to run with the latest Java the application, you can run Windows on your machine using one of these solutions*:
http://www.macmaps.com/macosxnative.html#WINTEL
without a speed hit. Some older solutions are available to G5 machines, but they are harder to find and significantly slower when running Windows.
Apple has no "conflict" with Java. It is Microsoft which does. Java was designed as a platform agnostic system. Microsoft corrupted it by adding ActiveX plugins which only run in Windows. Microsoft won't port ActiveX to the Mac. So your tech's viewpoint that Apple has a conflict with Java is only saving their own skin, because they probably don't want to learn the open system that Java is.

I would like to know which Sun Cert Java Course I should take ???
I am a very good C programmer that is trying to learn Java programming.
I know my way around all the various programming statements such as if-then-else, switch etc etc ...
I know the basics of an Applet and a Stand Alone application ...
I feel that I need some grounding on OO Technology ...
I would like to learn JAVA from where I am ...
I have also been reading up a lot on Java Programming lately ...
I am more of an Intermediate programmer ...
I have seen the Sun Certified Java courses web page and is quite confused by the many assortment of courses available ...
I would like to ask which Java Course is right for me at my level of programming experiences ???
Thanks in advance !!!
AndyMy limited understanding is that there are two main tests you can go for. The first is the Programmer certification, which tests your knowledge of the Java language itself, so you're asked questions about very specific things about the language syntax and such. I think these questions are stupid, because they serve no practical purpose, and some questions are more of a test of your memory.
Then you can take the Developer certification, which is focused more on evaulating and writing programs.
I haven't taken either, but there are some good resources for preparing for these tests.

Andywww.jcert.org has the information laid out a little better. I picked up Java without a formal course and I had about the same specs as you (although I had done a fair amount of c++ work). I would suggest the Java book by van der Linden (I know I'm not spelling the name right). I think it's called Just Java 2. Also Thinking in Java by Eckel has gotten good recommendations. For exam prep, the Exam Cram book by Brogden is highly recommended, but it won't teach you OO.

Java update 1 for MAC OS 10.6 caused problems
Hello,
Today I installed the new java update 1 for Mac OS 10.6 and my eclipse is no longer working.
Actually, the eclipse itself is starting up okay, the problem is when I try to startup jboss AS to start working I get the following error:
ERROR: This jdwp native library will not work with this VM's version of JVMTI (1.0.36), it needs JVMTI 1.1[.102].
This happened right after I installed the update.
To make things more complicated, my workspace in eclipse is set to compile/deploy with a JDK 5 installation I have. Since the update was supposed to only affect the JDK 6 that comes with Snow Leopard, and I'm not using it to run JBoss AS in eclipse, in theory there shouldn't be any problem.
The eclipse itself is running on JDK 6, however.
Anyone have a clue? Unfortunately I'm not using time machine and cannot revert the update.I updated my Snow Leopard on Friday 4th, and since that moment i can't run MyEclipse 7.5, and i get this message:

Can anyone tell me if there will be such an update soon, and possible when we can expect this?
Thanks!Yes, it's Java update 16 for Mac OS 10.6 that broke lots of stuff. The 51 comes from it updating Java to 1.6_51. There is an update to the update for 10.7 and up posted, but is there one for 10.6?
UPDATE: Never mind. If you go to the download page for Java update 16, it appears that it has been silently updated. Although there isn't any indication of the fact that it has been fixed, the build number is different (20.51-b01-457 instead of -456). -
I want to run a streaming quotes program on Scottrade. They tell me that their product does not work if I have more than one Java application on my Mac. How do I delete the older versions? Thanks
I have the same problem, they never told me that, just that the newest version of Java "locks" up streaming quotes.

I’ve tried to login to the XMF for my company to send artwork to a printer on both Chrome Version 34.0.1847.116, Safari Version 7.0.3 (9537.75.14) and Firefox 27.0. I think I have the most recent version of Java installed but I can't find out which version it is. The web application XMF is telling me that it doesn't support Java updates over 51.
I can’t seem to delete Java from my machine, I’m running a Mac with Mac OS 10.9 (mavericks), I’ve enabled the root user and done a search for the ‘JavaAppletPlugin.plugin’, but this didn’t result in anything, I don’t feel experienced enough to mess with Terminal. Can anyone help. Ultimately I want to install Java update 51 for mac os x I think 64 bit.

What are the security implications of having JAVA running on my Mac Book Pro?
What are the security implications of having JAVA running on my Mac Book Pro?
Java on the Web (not to be confused with JavaScript, to which it's not related, despite the similarity of the names) is a weak point in the security of any system. Java is, among other things, a platform for running complex applications in a web page, on the client. That was always a bad idea, and Java's developers have proven themselves incapable of implementing it without also creating a portal for malware to enter. Past Java exploits are the closest thing there has ever been to a Windows-style virus affecting OS X. Merely loading a page with malicious Java content could be harmful.
Fortunately, client-side Java on the Web is obsolete and mostly extinct. Only a few outmoded sites still use it. Try to hasten the process of extinction by avoiding those sites, if you have a choice. Forget about playing games or other non-essential uses of Java.
Java is not included in OS X 10.7 and later. Discrete Java installers are distributed by Apple and by Oracle (the developer of Java.) Don't use either one unless you need it. Most people don't. If Java is installed, disable it — not JavaScript — in your browsers.
Regardless of version, experience has shown that Java on the Web can't be trusted. If you must use a Java applet for a task on a specific site, enable Java only for that site in Safari. Never enable Java for a public website that carries third-party advertising. Use it only on well-known, login-protected, secure websites without ads. In Safari 6 or later, you'll see a lock icon in the address bar with the abbreviation "https" when visiting a secure site. -

char buf[128];
const char *str = (*env)->GetStringUTFChars(env, enter, 0);
printf("%s", str);
(*env)->ReleaseStringUTFChars(env, enter, str);
scanf("%s", buf);
return (*env)->NewStringUTF(env, buf);
}To generate DLL
create bcc32.cfg file in %BORLAND_INSTALL%/BCC5/bin Folder
In the bcc32.cfg file add following code
-I"%BORLAND_INSTALL%\BCC55\include;%JAVA_HOME%\include;%JAVA_HOME%\include\win32"
-L"%BORLAND_INSTALL%\BCC55\lib;%BORLAND_INSTALL%\BCC55\Lib\PSDK;"
i.e the path for borland compiler and java.
now goto prompt and say
prompt>bcc32 -tWM -tWD mymac.c
This will create mymac.lib File
Now say
prompt>implib -c mymac.lib mymac.dll
That's it!!
there you are with dll
Now you can run the mac.class file by using java
VC++
Click File->New->Win32Dynamic-Link Library
Give name and Select
A simple DLL project
You will have
myMac.CPP file
// myMac.cpp : Defines the entry point for the DLL application.
#include "stdafx.h"
#include "mac.h"
#include "jni.h" //can copy or give full path
#include <math.h>
BOOL APIENTRY DllMain( HANDLE hModule,
DWORD ul_reason_for_call,
LPVOID lpReserved
return TRUE;
JNIEXPORT void JNICALL
Java_mac_getMac(JNIEnv *env, jobject obj)
printf("You are in getMac (VC++) DLL\n");
JNIEXPORT jstring JNICALL
Java_mac_getLine(JNIEnv *env, jobject obj, jstring enter)
char buf[128];
const char *str = env->GetStringUTFChars(enter, 0);
printf("\n%s", str);
env->ReleaseStringUTFChars(enter, str);
scanf("%s", buf);
return env->NewStringUTF(buf);
}Hope this is useful

Folks,
Does anyone know of a good online Java course where there are server resources available for uploading servlets and connecting to database, etc. and testing them in a client/server environment ?
Some of the tutorials are great, but you need a server to test with...unless of course there is something I can install to simulate a client/server environment.
Thanks,
BobAll you have to do to test servlets is to install a web server (that supports servlets) on your machine, Tomcat is the most widely used and it's free.
Then you can start the server and go to the local url with your browser (http://localhost:8080) and you have a complete client-server environment on your machine. -
Cannot open any Java files on my Mac OSX: Problem Solved
Hello all,
I have just begun an Introduction to Java class and I'm already having problems...namely, I cannot open .java files on my Mac.
Whenever I try to open them, I get an error message that says: "You cannot use this version of the application Xcode with this version of Mac OS X."
I'm running version 10.5.4 on a PowerPC Mac. It's a few years old, but I don't understand how it could already be so outdated as to not allow me to even use the application.
I am 100% new to programming and don't really know at all what I'm doing. Apple says their JDK comes with every Mac and no one else seems to be having this problem. I don't really even know where to go to for updates, if that is what I need to do, or if I should just download a different JDK.
This is an intensive (6-week) class and I don't want to fall behind, but it's halfway through the first week and I cannot even open files.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
EDIT: I figured out the problem by getting out my installation disks and I found the latest xCode tools app in the "optional packages" folder.
Installed it and now I'm up and running.
Edited by: chalks on Sep 17, 2008 10:09 AMYou can download Adobe Reader from adobe.com. The Mac OSX uses its "reader" to open PDF files without the Adobe Reader. If you downloader adobe reader, it should open all PDF files. Hope this helps.

Running Java 3D application on Mac OS X
Is Java 3D supported on Mac OS X? I am trying to run a Java 3D jar file but keep getting a "main class not found" error.
The error "main class not found" points probably to a corrupt jar file. But there is another problem with J3D and MacOS:
The actual state on j3d.org (http://www.j3d.org/download.html):
Apple
Not available. Java 3D requires Java 2 to run. The MacOS X supports Java 2 but does not have a J3D port. Earlier versions of the OS will not support Java 2. How long it takes to then get Java 3D onto the platform is anyone's guess as Sun an Apple are "still discussing licensing". At least now they have the basics. -
Java application development on Mac OSX
Does anyone do Java application development on a Mac? I know that Mac has their own version of Java and I was wondering if there were any difficulties of Java development on a Mac. I'm considering a switch from Windows to Mac and want to evaluate how it will impact my Java development. I currently use Eclipse 3.2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of Java development on a Mac?
ThanksI'm no Java3d expert but i'm quite sure java is slow on macs, as the java for mac technology is quite bad. Even 2d games with few sprites go slowly on my mac, it's a shame. However this might change as Apple is working quite hard on getting java to work properly, ( mainly because if java becomes popular the macs will lose their incompatibility problem! )

JAVA editor/compiler for Mac
I am taking a JAVA programming course , and I would like to download a JAVA editing program for use on my home computer (Mac OS 10.5). I use TextPad at school, and I would like a similar program that can compile and run JAVA applications/applets.
If you want an IDE ...
http://www.eclipse.org/
Of course, you can use any text editor and the command-line to compile if you don't want an IDE.
