Java for OS X 2012-006 says "A newer version is already installed"

...which is true.
I downloaded the latest Java update today on OS X Lion 10.7.5 (and some other updates).
I also updated to the latest Java from Oracle (so I was running 1.7 u9 and 1.6 u37). But, the Apple Java update today looks like it got rid of /Applications/Utilities/Java Preferences, so I was having some trouble trying to figure out another problem.
Fast forward a bit and I've hosed up everything. I have Oracle 1.7 u7 installed, but need the Apple 1.6 stuff still. However, when I go to install it, I get the error above: "Alert: A newer version of this package is already installed."
However, at this point I've deleted a bunch of files in /System/Libraries, in /Libraries, and there is no /usr/bin/java or /usr/libexec/java_home, etc.
Where in the world does Installer find the previous version and know it's already been installed? Can I somehow make it forget it installed it once and just have it reinstall?

OK, I think I fixed it (sort of).
I had tried editing /System/Library/CoreServices/JavaVersion.plist and adding in an older version of Java, but maybe it was looking at the timestamp of the file? I eventually downloaded an earlier version of Apple's Java and manually extracted the packages/contents into a temporary directory. Then I copied over a few directions/executables into the reals /System/Library/Java* areas.
I re-ran the 006 update and it stuck. I'm guessing the JavaVersion.plist file was it but I don't know for sure (would love to know for sure how Installer.app knows what is installed, where it looks, etc).
I think this also blew away my Oracle Java 7 install, but that's okay for now because I think I can reinstall that easier.

Can't update quicktime on windows xp. I have 7.3.1 and when I try to install 7.7.3 it says I have a newer version already installed??? Even uninstalling the older one, it still says the same thing. I haven't been able to update it since 2007.

Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from the following page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATION" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up").
In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any QuickTime entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC. Now try another QuickTime install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • Java for OS X 2012-006 Problem Failed Installation

Hi, I have this problem with my Java for OS X 2012-006. I wanted to use a Java using application, but tells me to install a new version of Java (2012-006).
Startup runs fine but then says that the Installation Failed.
I tried this multiple times then gave up. I searched Google and it led me to:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5493
I downloaded it, Mounted the DMG and ran the .pkg
I agree to everything and then ran Install. Then the error "The Installation Failed" with a warning sign comes up, telling me to contact the software manufacturer.
So i go on to the Java website, Searched up Installation Fail "Java" and then told me to Uninstall and then Re-Install.
For Uninstalling, the files were not there. So I Ignored it.
I then donwloaded Java 7 Update 10, but soon to be the same error as the Java OS X 2012-006 error.
My Computer is a Late 2012 Macbook Pro 13-Inch.
Is there any text that logs what I am doing in the installer? If you tell me where that is, i'll give it to you.
Thanks for reading. And Please help.

And This was when i installed Java Version 7 Update 10

  • HT5367 Why does Java for OS X 2012-006 lead to this article!!!

On Apple.com -> Support -> Downloads, searching for Java for OS X 2012-006, opening the article to download leads to Java for OS X 2012-005.
So I can't download the Java, and it's telling me I have missing content.
    Could use please fix this?
    Regards

No I did have Java 7 installed.
Then I uninstalled it, using the guide from here: http://www.java.com/en/download/help/mac_uninstall_java.xml
It worked fine with 1.6.0_35 untill Apple released 1.6.0_37, then it just stopped working. In Safari, FF and Chrome.
Tried installing Java 7 again now that 1.7.0_9 had come out to see if that solved my problems, but no that was equally screwed. So uninstalled it again.
Where Java should run it just says "missing addon" or rather since it's danish "manglende tilbehør".
I daily support people with their computer, and I'm close to saying I have to reinstall my mac to get java working again, and that's just dumb.
If they would just link to a proper download article so you could download java 1.6.0_37 for mac os 10.8 then the world would be a but more peachy.

  • Cannot update / install java for OS X 2012 - 006 on 10.7.5

after reinstalling/restoring from lion restore disk, on boot, system requests me to install java for OS X 2012 - 006
    with automatic download failed :
after downloading the install file from downloads archive I got also bad response :
I did also try to repair permissions and found many problems all with the same start route like this:
ACL found but not expected on “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/....... and more ”
    please some help, thank you

thank you baltwo for your reply
well, the download of the files I mentioned before (second screenshot) ... the library files I just removed also before without success (not mentioned before, right) ... and now I tested other ways more and found a temporary solution ... I write down the steps for other users:
    1) first try: downloading the lion 10.7.5 combo update from apple downloads was not corrupted and was working fine, the itunes, java files where still corrupted and not working ....
    2) tested downloads of other web-pages -> all safe and working
    3) restart/reset router and airport = no success for requested apple downloads
    4) unplugged router/ethernet and download over airport only the apple-files through SU and was working ! success !
so remains the question of all this why and how ? it's not the provvider, it's not ethernet, it's not apple download page ... ????
however ... at the moment I'm safe and I hope everybody else with this problem finds the solution in the same way

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select "/var/log/install.log" from the file list. Then select the messages from the last installation or update attempt, starting from the time when you initiated it. If you're not sure when that was, start over and note the time. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

  • Java won't update - A newer version is already installed

    Hello all,
I'm operating on a MacBook Air that i recently updated to OS X 10.9.2. Along with the update, Java 7 was installed. I need to have Java 6 Update 20 installed to use some programs on this computer for work. I've gotten the files to install that update, but when I attempt to do so I receive a message stating that I cannot install on my disk. A newer version is already installed.
I've gone into finder > Go to Folder and deleted the Java folder after uninstalling java in the first place. This has not fixed my issue. Please advise. I'm sorry if this is in the incorrect format. I wasn't able to post to the applications group.

    Hi Christopherbronson,
If you need to reenable Java 6 on your machine, you may find the following article helpful:

Works here. Apple's no longer supplying the Java Runtime Environment component or managing it. Oracle is.

  • How to completely remove Safari and reinstall. I don't have Safari on my Mac, yet, it says I can't install the newest Safari because a newer version is already installed... Help?

Okay. So, Safari was giving me some trouble, right? So, I thought I would delete it and reinstall it. I never had a problem doing so before, right? So, why not? I did, and then, when I tried to reinstall it, it tells me I have a newer version already installed. Can someone help me out here?

    Hi..
Are you running Lion v10.7 by chance even though your profile indicates v10.6.8   ??
I ask because you can only reinstall apps using Lion Recovery
Much better to ask for help with Safari here before trying to delete the app and reinstall.
Is the Safari app still in the Trash by chance?

  • Can't open Numbers on computer, it says to download new version but new version is already installed

I cant open Numbers in my computer, it says to download new version in app store. i have done that but it still continues to give me that message.

Are you launching Numbers from an icon in your Dock? Installing the update does not change the Dock icons & it does not remove the older versions. Go to your Applications folder & launch the new Numbers from there then right-click on the Dock icon & select Options > Keep in Dock.
Installing new versions of iWork has never replaced existing versions. This is nothing new. The only thing new is that the '09 apps are moved to an iWork '09 folder if they were purchased from the Mac App Store. If they were installed from disk they should already be in a separate folder in Applications.

  • Java problem after update 2012-006

    Hi,
Today was update 2012-006 concerning java. It deinstalls java 6 from your mac. If you want java, you get it from java.com. This is a java 7 version.
but help: I want to go back!
there are some web-apps that do not work with this new java-version. Downgrading is not possible, becauase java 6 is only available through mac update itself. And if I want to install this again, it says that a newer version is already installed.
    can anybody hellp me out?

Today was update 2012-006 concerning java. It deinstalls java 6 from your mac.
That is not actually correct, according to Apple's documentation of Java for OS X 2012-006:
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT5549
It should update Java to 1.6.0_37, which is still Java 6. (Java 7 is 1.7.x.) However, Apple has changed the way Java works. The system now disabled Java by default, and if you turn Java back on, the system will disable it again if you don't use it for a certain period of time. It's also possible that the system will disable Java every time there's an update. (I'm not sure about that, as I don't have Java installed myself, for security reasons.)
For more information about this, including how to re-enable Java, see Using Java in Mac OS X. You should note, though, that enabling Java in your web browser has become a very risky proposition... Java has more holes in it than Swiss cheese!

  • Error when downloading Java for OS X 2012-003

Hey guys just wondering if you would be able to help me.  I have had this issue for the last week and cant seem to find anything to sort it out.
I am unable to download Java for OS X 2012-003 version 1.0 66.8MB
At the end of the installation process (when is states that it is moving items into place) and error message appears.  It says
" The update Java for OS X 2012-003 cant be installed.  An unexpected error occured"
The same message appeared when trying to download Java for OS X 2012-002.  I have not had any trouble dowloading other sofware updates (I tunes, i photo etc)
I have tried downloading the updates from the Apple webiste but i get an error stating that an unexpected error occured and they ask if i would like to send apple a report.  To which i have said yes.
Any suggestions on how to rectafy this problem as i am aware that this update is to help protect against malware etc.
    Thanks heaps in advance

Shut down. Then reboot holding down the command-r keys into the Lion Recovery disk. Select Disk Utility and run Repair Disk.

  • Java for OS X 2012-002 update fails verify

Is anyone else seeing the problem where mounting the Java for OS X 2012-002 downloaded from Apple's support site fails to verify?  SHA1 hash verifies correctly.  This is snippet of hdiutil attach -debug output:
    ** Checking volume bitmap.
    ** Checking volume information.
       Volume header needs minor repair
** The volume Java for OS X 2012-002 was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.
    2012-04-10 12:33:27.554 diskimages-helper[10076:2603] performVolumeChecking: /sbin/fsck_hfs(/dev/disk2s3) returned 8

I see that this has been reported here in this discussion group.  This is somewhat embarassing for Apple given that this 2012-002 was released directly on the heels of 001 to fix unspecified issues.  The Software Update-delivered update appears to not have issues though.  This would only be a problem for those of us who are using other mechanisms for updating. Hmmm.  Apple, please fix the DMG and repost.
