Java help for an old MacBook

    I need some help, please.  I have an old MacBook - Mac OS X version 10.5.8 - and I have zero money.  Health wise, I have large spaces of time when I need to be still, for meds to work.  My sis gave me a membership for Pogo and the games really helped a lot with the still times.  Now, I keep getting Java messages that I need to update my Java -  -  - and I'm afraid that my ol' Mac isn't up to the task anymore.  At least, I've tried to update many times - but I wind up having the same problem.  Do I need to uninstall something and reinstall? (how would I do that) Am I just SOL?  Or do you have an idea that would work.               I've asked this question on other forums and have gotten some guy who wants $80 to $100 to tell me how to fix it, but as I said, I have zero money.  If someone has an idea, please let me know.      Thank you so much.

I assume the MacBook is Intel? (-About This Mac from the menu bar)
Java should update through Apple Software update FOR FREE. (-Software Update from the menu bar). Oracle no longer offers a download that will run on Mac OS systems lower than 10.7.
The direct link to download the latest Flasj=h Player that will run on OS 10.5.8 is: Flash Player 10.3.183.90 (Mac only)
Unfortunately, that may not work with Pogo.
If you truly do have "zero" money you may be SOL.
If your Mac is Intel and you can possibly spare $20 (I'm not  asking for it), Apple sells OS 10.6 (http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard) for $19.99 and they ship it for free.
Everything you have will "Migrate" to the new OS with the install, but you'll be able to run a lot of software that WON'T run on 10.5

  • Ideas for my old MacBook

    Hi!
    I'd like to ask the forum for ideas on what to do with my old MacBook. By "old" I mean I bought it in the fall of 2007. Last December I spilled a whole venti vanilla latte on part of the keyboard. Computer after being dried out still works. No weird glitches thus far. I replaced it already because I feared reliability issues. Any ideas? It cost $1800 so I can't bare to sell it as scrap. I also have a Mac Mini so I already own a desktop.
    Thanks!
    Mark Dragoni

    You can make it into a media center... a much better version of an AppleTV. This is a popular use for Minis... but as you seem to already be using your Mini and you don't have a use for this machine... it could be a fun project:
    Here's one guide... but you can Google for lots of others. Most are related to the Mini as that is what most people use... but you can do it with a spare MacBook too:

    Just make sure you get the right video connector as they change from model to model.

  • How do I download Mountain Lion to create a bootable installer USB for an old macbook

    I am trying to reformat an old macbook, and it says it is unable to unmount the drive when I attempt to erase the disc. I've been told I need to create a bootable installer and try using disc utility from the installer to erase it, but can't find out how to download any OS X installer other than Yosemite (which isn't suitable as the macbook is too old).

    If it is too old to run Yosemite, Mountain Lion won't run either. The hardware requirements are the same for both versions of the OS. You might be able to use Lion, but from my experience with Lion, I'd stay with Snow Leopard.

  • Finding which version of OS X should I use for my old MacBook black

    I have an old MacBook (black4,1) 2.4 GHz Inter Core 2 Duo; 4GB memory.
    I had to format it, so it is currently running on OS X 10.5.8. I would like to upgrade the Operating system to the latest version that fits this specific machine.
    At home a new iMac running on OS X 10.9.2, so I would like to at least be able to sync the basics over iCloud.
    Any clues on which version of OS X could/should I use?
    Thanks a lot.

    It appears you can upgrade to Lion.

    You will need to upgrade to Snow Leopard (10.6) to download Lion.

  • Java Help For Apple Widget Program

    I'm working on a Apple Widget and I have a question for the JS part of it.
    I want multiple elements to fade out when the widget loads up, I can get one element to fade out, but how do I get multiple elements to fade out on the same onLoad event.
    Here is the code to get one item to fade out.
    function elementHide(event)
    // Values you provide
    var itemToFadeOut = document.getElementById("img"); // replace with name of element to fade
    // Fading code
    var fadeHandler = function(a, c, s, f){ itemToFadeOut.style.opacity = c; };

    Avi,
    Dude, this is java forum, and Java is NOT javascript... so try a [javascript forum|http://www.google.com/search?q=javascript+forum&hl=en&sourceid=gd&rls=GGLD,GGLD:2008-06,GGLD:en&aq=t].

  • I work for a university and we have a legal apple vendor.Can we re-install macosx for a replacement hard drive for a old macbook?Just one example.

    I work for a university and we have a legal apple vendor who we get to buy all our Apple products from.Can we (university) re-install macosx for a replacement hard drive once the hard drive gets replaced? How can we as the university IT department legally re-install macosx on a imac,macbook, macbookair etc. We would like to load customized macosx imaging software onto the mac machines(imac, macbook, etc ). The university has its own IT workshop and we would like our users to get their laptops back in the shortest turnaround time.

    We're not "Apple Inc." here, just users like you.
    So whatever we say is not an official statement, nor does it in any way, shape, or form represent the official or unofficial policies or opinions of Apple, Inc.
    But I'll offer my quick opinion, having worked in information-systems and technology support in a wide variety of environments over many years.
    Question #1. "NO!"
    No tech support nor repair facility, even if "Apple-authorized", is automatically empowered to install or upgrade OS X on a replacement hard drive just because it is more convenient or time-efficient. When the repair is complete, the student should be expected to (re)install the operating system themself*!
    Nurturing students (and occasionally dragging them, screaming and kicking!) as budding computer-, tablet-, smartphone-users to become digitally self-sufficient is a worthy goal that any institution of higher education must pursue.
    Making students totally dependent upon "Mother Support" for every little thing about their personal digital devices is a grave disservice to both the students and the people who provide the support. Support-mothered students do become life-long digital dependents, instead of taking the required time to learn enough about the care and feeding of their digital "pets" to sustain them. Entreprenurial students may choose to become 'experts' and actually help each other with their devices, and even make money doing it. Some students may even be inspired/coerced to pursue a career in tech support!!!
    *By all means, if the student requests additional help (re-installing the OS), then the University should charge the student a fair price for the service, provided that the user provides the OS on original or upgrade media, or in the case of the 'digital download' upgrades (for OS X 10.7 and 10.8) provides proof of purchase for the OS upgrade, or the original purchase receipt or other recognized documentation for the purchase of the computer showing the version of OS installed when purchased. Students need to learn about personal responsibility, economics ("What is MY time really worth"?), and proper record-keeping too!
    Question #2. Regarding the customized imaging software, provide it on media or a link for students to download and install it. Make it their responsibility!

  • Need Help for New Purchase - Macbook Pro 8gb & express slot

    Hello All,
    I needed some advise or rather clarification on a new purchase of a Macbook Pro.
    I became a bit disheartened ever since the new Macbook Pros replaced the express slot with the SD card reader.
    I want a 15" Macbook Pro , with 8gb of expandable ram (Or at least have the option) , 512 video - graphics memory , & the express slot.
    I DO NOT WANT the 17' because it becomes too bulky.
    Here is what i was looking at: (15" macbook pro - 2.93ghz core 2 duo, 512 video, express slot, 4gb ram, etc) -$1,949 - Basically the model just prior to the new line with the express slot instead of the card reader.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/G0GR3LL/A?mco=MjE0NDk5Mw
    In this description , it states that the ram is limited to 4gb , but i find that hard to believe, seeing as how the previous model (early 2009) allowed for upto 8gb of ram i believe.
    Secondly, the link below (toward the bottom) outlines that the Macbook Pro, depending on the processor (2.66 or above) , do allow for 8gb or ram.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacBook_Pro
    I have gotten mixed information, and needed to clarify before i make this large investment.
    Any advise that can be offered would be a big help.
    Thank you.
    -Parag

    I saw your post and thought I could definitely help ya out on some of your questions.
    First of all, yes - All the latest MBP's support up to 8GB RAM. (I'd recommend buying the RAM at "Other World Computing" as opposed to upgrading through Apple though. It's about 60% cheaper and is quite easy to install)
    I find it very frustrating that the 13" & 15" MBP's no longer have a way to expand functionality via an Express-Card slot. There's really no work around on this other than going with the 17". However, I know how bulky that, and I love my 13" in comparison. The only other possibility would be to find a 15" from their previous series of MBP's (they come with only 4GB RAM, but actually will support up to 6GB).
    I do love my new 13", and unless you definitely need the Express Card reader, I definitely reccommend the purchase. Good Luck!

  • Help for an old iMac

    Hi,
    I was wondering. I have an old mac OS X 10.1.5, 192 MB, and can't afford to upgrade. I have iTunes 4.7 but I cannot buy songs in that version. Is there anyway I can download an iTunes version to get songs?
    Thanks.

    Well, go to software update ( Click Apple button - click Software Update...) and see what updates you have. I think you can update your iTunes up to 4.9. (Not sure of that...that OSX is unheard of anymore...) I know for sure that it can be updated to 4.7.1.
    According to Apple, Itunes 4.7 was the first one with support for music downloads, but not video. So either way you should be able to so. I am sorry, but that OS is really old, and it wasn't popular in the first place. I hope I helped though! I completely understand your financial position (Look at my imac....), but you really do need to think about upgrading to at-least OSX 10.2, or 10.3....as i don't think it will handle Tiger. They are BIG improvements over 10.1.5. Hope I helped!

  • Help for a watered MacBook Pro?

    Hey everyone!
    So, last week, I spilled a pretty full glass of water on my 13-inch non-retina display MacBook pro. The screen stayed on for a little while on the word processing I was doing before it fizzled out. I took it to the Genius Bar, where they told me that the motherboard and battery were both shot, that there was still standing water in the MacBook, and that I'd have to buy a whole new one. They took the undamaged hard drive out for me, and I went home.
    Later that night, I was quite distraught, but thought I'd try turning it on one more time, just in case. I practically soiled my pants when the startup sound came through the speaker! The screen (which was functioning perfectly) told me that there was, of course, no hard drive connected.
    With renewed hope, I bought a giant bag of rice, emptied out half of it, and put my MacBook inside. (I know that a lot of people on here advise against that, but what did I have to lose?) Yesterday me and one of my Apple-savvy friends opened it up and found that there was no standing water left inside, and the only visible damage was some small (possibly normal) corrosion along the top of the motherboard. We hooked the hard drive back up, but the computer didn't turn on. Any ideas? I have a hunch that maybe the battery needs replacing. I feel like since the computer turned on that one time after the spill, the motherboard can't be completely gone.

    but thought I'd try turning it on one more time, just in case.
    Bad idea, everyone tries it, always a bad idea. That just causes more damage from a wet logic board.
    With renewed hope, I bought a giant bag of rice,
    Wont work period.   (see below)
    that there was no standing water left inside
    Standing water is never the issue, rather water in the 1000 tight places where it will ruin your Mac, and eventually corrode.
    Liquid spills, why your MacBook chassis is a one-way valve for spills
    After a substantial spill many people will turn their notebook upside down and shake it, not only does this not work, but it spreads liquid havoc throughout your machine and makes things often as bad as possible.
    The keyboard itself acts like a one way valve in the case of a substantial liquid spill. While liquid pours into the bottom chassis easy, it does not come out easily at all, and in the case of any spill, most of it will not come out by turning it upside down. Disconnect all power and contact Apple for diagnostics and repair.
    Do not attempt to, after a spill, ‘dry out your MacBook’ and test it
    After a spill most people invariably try to “dry out” their notebook by various methods, including hair dryers and otherwise. This both does not work, and after a substantial spill of any magnitude, even if the liquid was water, residue is left behind.
    There are additionally many very tight places inside your notebook where liquids will linger for a very long time, and cause corrosion or worse.
    Immediately unplug your notebook and contact Apple for in shop diagnostics and parts replacement.
    In the case of very minor spills people will “dry out” their notebook and feel success that their notebook is working ok, however invariably in nearly all instances after 4-14 days an error / fault pops up and is usually followed by more.
    In case of a spill, damage estimates are impossible,.....anything can be fixed, without question.......the question is cost.
    contact Apple for in shop diagnostics and cost estimation ....possible parts replacement.

    To compare two objects use equals. In general == has not the expected effect.
    public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent ae)
    if (ae.getSource()equals(b))
    ReadFile fr = new ReadFile();
    fr.read();
    }In the ReadFile you don't need a main method.
    import java.io.*;
    import java.util.*;
    public class ReadFile {
         public void read(String args[])
                 String line;

                 while (( line = in.readLine()) !=null)

    As Niel says.  10.6 is newer, cheaper, and much easier to find than 10.5  With an Intel Mac there is likely not much you can run under Leopard that you cannot run under Snow Leopard.
