Hello,
What is the significance of setting up JAVA_HOME for Tomcat?
Thankshi,
Before running the script, the JAVA_HOME environment variable should be set to the base path of the JDK. Alternately, when calling the ./configure script, the path of the JDK may be specified using the with-java parameter, such as ./configure with-java=/usr/java.
Using the following commands should result in a compiled jsvc binary, located in the $CATALINA_HOME/bin folder. This assumes that GNU TAR is used, and that CATALINA_HOME is an environment variable pointing to the base path of the Tomcat installation. -
Anybody knows how to configure the JDBC + TOMCAT?
try to install mysql-connector-java into java home
directory. and specify the path in classpath.
had i answered ur question correctly.No JARs belong in JAVA_HOME.
Tomcat ignores your system CLASSPATH.
This advice is utterly, completely wrong. It's not even wrong.
Put the MySQL JAR in your app's WEB-INF/lib directory, then learn to configure a JNDI data source.

Thanks,
SibyHi,
Please make sure you have Tomcat 5.5 installed on your machine.
Also JAVA_HOME and Tomcat's CATALINA path are set accordingly in Environment Variables.
After setting these restart machine and Eclipse.
The latest version for crystal report for eclipse isCrystal Report For Eclipse v2.0 SP1

Where is my beans!?
I have a BIG problem accessing my beans from my JSP-pages. I am running Tomcat 3.2.3 in Windows98, with JDK 1.3. I have places my application under ?TOMCAT_HOME?/webapps/examples/jsp/messageboard, with my beans (class-files) under ?TOMCAT_HOME?/webapps/examples/WEB-INF/classes/messageboard.
I have added TOMCAT_HOME and JAVA_HOME in tomcat.bat. Tomcats own examples of JSP and beans works good. When I try to run my application I get the following JSP-code I get the error message:
<!-- Instantiate ConnectionPool bean named pool -->
<jsp:useBean id="pool" scope="application" class="messageboard.ConnectionPool" />
Error: 500
Location: /examples/jsp/messageboard/SendUserData.jsp
Internal Servlet Error:
org.apache.jasper.JasperException: Unable to compile class for JSPC:\Java\jakarta-tomcat-3.2.3\webapps\examples\WEB-INF\classes\messageboard\ConnectionPool.java:1: The source file encoding may be different with this platform encoding. Please use -encoding option to adjust file encoding, or apply native2ascii utility to make source file ASCII encoding.
error: File C:\Java\jakarta-tomcat-3.2.3\webapps\examples\WEB-INF\classes\messageboard\ConnectionPool.java does not contain type messageboard.ConnectionPool as expected. Please adjust the class path so that the file does not appear in the package messageboard.

pool= (messageboard.ConnectionPool)
^
Any idea what could be wrong? Please help me!I presume that you created a package called "messageboard" and it contains the class
"ConnectionPool.class" as a file. In other words, there is no "ConnectioPool" subdirectory.
If the above is correct, then I suggest modifying your JSP tag to be the following:
<jsp:useBean id="pool" scope="application" class="ConnectionPool" />
I hope it helps! Otherwise, let me know. -

Java_home issue on Tomcat 4.1.X
I have a problem running Tomcat as a service in XP. Before, I could not get the index.jsp to load that comes with Tomcat. I disabled it as a service and added JAVA_HOME to the startup and shutdown bat files. Starting it from startup.bat, everything worked fine. I then switched back to a service, and it does not work right...I believe it cannot find javac.
What can I do to resolve this?I uninstalled, and at the beginning of reinstall...I get this dialog :
Using Java Development Kit found in C:\J2SDK_Forte\jdk1.4.0\
The problem is...that directory doesn't exist...the problem with having multiple versions of java, is when you try to uninstall one...all hell breaks loose. Somewhere in my system it thinks that there is a Java install in this directory. The tomcat install won't give me the option to change the directory.
Any other ideas...maybe on how to get it to not think that C:\J2SDK_Forte\jdk1.4.0\ exists... -
Broken Tomcat installation on WinXP - JAVA_HOME error
I am new to WinXP ... but have to use it. The problem I am experiencing is due to error in setting JAVA_HOME.
I am in the process of installing a Tomcat 5.5.20 and have problems with correctly seting JAVA_HOME environmental variable.
My jre is at "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_10", and this is a value I placed at JAVA_HOME=.C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_10
When I am testing it running %Java_Home%\bin\java ... I am getting back the same error I am getting when I'm run startup.bat i.e., "'C:\Program' is not recognized as an internal or external command".
This must be my lack of experience with DOS/WInXP -- do I have to place quotes? is this a problem?
Thx for help...
peteOK. I found the problem. I am writing this for others who may encounter the same problem while working late ... and perhaps be a bit desparate ...
YOU MUST LOAD A FULL JDK! For whatever reasons, there is(are?) JDK distributions that offer reduced functionality - no jdb.exe and so on.
I found it hard way by tracing execution of "setclasspath.bat". Without badmouthing the script, let me only say that it's diagnostic msgs are somewhat cryptic. In the first scan they indicate error in defining JAVA_HOME, however once you look why are you geting the msg, it is clearly generated on the exit when failing to validate that (in my case) jdb.exe is not available.
Given this clue, I checked (googled) for missing jdb.exe and here is a smoking gun:

Saish, thanks for your kind reply, trust me I was as puzzled by this as you were ;-)
Regards to all and read carefully the small print ;-))),

If u r familiar with tomcat you can probably help me. This is my deal I (from c:\jakarta-tomcat-3.2.3):
set JAVA_HOME=c:\jdk1.3.1
set TOMCAT_HOME=c:\jakarta-tomcat-3.2.3
and then bin\startup and it works fine, HOWEVER, when I try to open tomcat by from the actual startup.bat file in c:\jakarta-tomcat-3.2.3 by clicking on it I get a window that tells me, and I quote,
"You must set JAVA_HOME to point at your Java Development Kit installation"
Why do I get this message? Why am I able to startup from the prompt just fine, but not the way I just described(by actually going to the startup.bat file)?
Thank you to all the JAVA geeks...just kidding, I strive to be like u
PedroIf you want the scripts to run by double clicking on them, you must set JAVA_HOME and TOMCAT_HOME permanantely in your autoexec.bat or you control panel. Setting them on the command line each time will not help. Try adding these lines to your autoexec.bat or the system program in the control panel:
set JAVA_HOME=c:\jdk1.3.1
set TOMCAT_HOME=c:\jakarta-tomcat-3.2.3 -
Why the new Tomcat 7.0.19 failed to locate JAVA_HOME?
Yesterday I upgraded from tomcat 7.0.16 => 7.0.19
and now
rc.d start tomcat7
would fail with:
:: Starting tomcat7 daemon [BUSY]

[FAIL]
It's still just working right before I hit pacman -Syu.........
while I try reinstalling jdk/jre or go back to tomcat 7.0.16,
it doesn't make any difference.
And I'm sure that I've set $JAVA_HOME and $JRE_HOME correctly.
But strange enough, when I try su to root and /etc/rc.d/tomcat7 start
It works.
but when I tried sudo /etc/rc.d/tomcat7 start
It failed like before.
I also tried /usr/share/tomcat7/bin/setclasspath.sh and it works if i'm root already,
or it would failed giving similar message if i try sudo.Hi! I changed my /etc/rc.d/tomcat7 file like this

useDirtyFlag = true means that we only replicate a session after setAttribute,removeAttribute has been called.
false means to replicate the session after each request.
false means that replication would work for the following piece of code: (only for SimpleTcpReplicationManager)
<%
HashMap map = (HashMap)session.getAttribute("map");
map.put("key","value");
%>
replicationMode = can be either 'pooled', 'synchronous' or 'asynchronous'.
* Pooled means that the replication happens using several sockets in a synchronous way. Ie, the data gets replicated, then the request return. This is the same as the 'synchronous' setting except it uses a pool of sockets, hence it is multithreaded. This is the fastest and safest configuration. To use this, also increase the nr of tcp threads that you have dealing with replication.
* Synchronous means that the thread that executes the request, is also the
thread the replicates the data to the other nodes, and will not return until all
nodes have received the information.
* Asynchronous means that there is a specific 'sender' thread for each cluster node,
so the request thread will queue the replication request into a "smart" queue,
and then return to the client.
The "smart" queue is a queue where when a session is added to the queue, and the same session
already exists in the queue from a previous request, that session will be replaced
in the queue instead of replicating two requests. This almost never happens, unless there is a
large network delay.
-->
<!--
When configuring for clustering, you also add in a valve to catch all the requests
coming in, at the end of the request, the session may or may not be replicated.
A session is replicated if and only if all the conditions are met:
1. useDirtyFlag is true or setAttribute or removeAttribute has been called AND
2. a session exists (has been created)
3. the request is not trapped by the "filter" attribute
The filter attribute is to filter out requests that could not modify the session,
hence we don't replicate the session after the end of this request.
The filter is negative, ie, anything you put in the filter, you mean to filter out,
ie, no replication will be done on requests that match one of the filters.
The filter attribute is delimited by ;, so you can't escape out ; even if you wanted to.
filter=".*\.gif;.*\.js;" means that we will not replicate the session after requests with the URI
ending with .gif and .js are intercepted.
The deployer element can be used to deploy apps cluster wide.
Currently the deployment only deploys/undeploys to working members in the cluster
so no WARs are copied upons startup of a broken node.
The deployer watches a directory (watchDir) for WAR files when watchEnabled="true"
When a new war file is added the war gets deployed to the local instance,
and then deployed to the other instances in the cluster.
When a war file is deleted from the watchDir the war is undeployed locally
and cluster wide

Need help getting Tomcat 5.0.28 to start (and stop, eventually)
Hi!
I am such a newbie to the Terminal and writing scripts, so please forgive my naiveté. I have successfully installed Tomcat in my /usr/local directory, but I am having trouble creating files to start and stop Tomcat, per the instructions on the following page:
http://developer.apple.com/internet/java/tomcat1.html
I've followed the directions but continue to get the following error after I execute ~/bin/start_tomcat.
-bash: start_tomcat: command not found
My file contains the following code:
#!/bin/sh /n
export CATALINA_HOME=/usr/local/jakarta-tomcat-5.0.28 /n
export JAVA_HOME=/usr /n
$CATALINA_HOME/bin/startup.sh /n
If anyone can help me, I would really, really, really appreciate it!
Thanks!
PowerBook G4 12" Mac OS X (10.4.5)Why are there all those "/n" there? Either you or the place you copied from has the wrong slash. But still, it's wronger than that to have them at all: "\n" means a newline (i.e., press "return") not the actual "backslash en" characters. Sometimes people post code with those \n visible: by making it explicit where a line-break should be, one doesn't have as much trouble when a web browser reformats the text and puts line breaks where they don't belong.

Problem with Configuring Tomcat for running jsp web applications..Plz HELP
I am using Tomcat 5.5 and Jdk 1.5.0_12 and Oracle 10g. I am using jdbc-odbc bridge connection
to connect to the database. I have placed my project folder called
tdm under the webapps folder in Tomcat. This 'tdm' folder consists of
a collection of html pages,jsp pages and images of my project. Also I created a
WEB-INF folderand in that I have lib folder which contains catalina-root.jar
, classes12.jar and nls_charset.jar files. And also in the WEB-INF folder I have the web.xml
file which looks like this
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>

My first page in the project is called Homepage.html. To start my project I give http://localhost:5050/tdm/homepage.html
in a browser. Here I accept a username and password from the user and then do the validation in
a valid.jsp file, where I connect to the database and check and use jsp:forward to go to next pages
accordingly. However when I enter the username and password and click Go in the homepage, nothing is
displayed on the next page. The URL in the browser says valid.jsp but a blank screen appears.
WHY DOES IT HAPPEN SO? DOES IT MEAN THAT TOMCAT IS NOT RECOGNIZING JAVA IN MY SYSTEM OR IS IT A PROBLEM
WITH THE DATABASE CONNECTION OR SOMETHING ELSE? I FEEL THAT TOMCAT IS NOT EXECUTING JSP COMMANDS?
IS IT POSSIBLE?WHY WILL THIS HAPPEN?
I set the JAVA_HOME and CATALINA_HOME environment to the jdk and tomcat folders resp.
Is there any other thing that I need to set in classpath? Should I have my project as a

<!-- Defines a cluster for this node,
By defining this element, means that every manager will be changed.
So when running a cluster, only make sure that you have webapps in there
that need to be clustered and remove the other ones.
A cluster has the following parameters:
className = the fully qualified name of the cluster class
name = a descriptive name for your cluster, can be anything
mcastAddr = the multicast address, has to be the same for all the nodes
mcastPort = the multicast port, has to be the same for all the nodes
mcastBindAddr = bind the multicast socket to a specific address
mcastTTL = the multicast TTL if you want to limit your broadcast
mcastSoTimeout = the multicast readtimeout
mcastFrequency = the number of milliseconds in between sending a "I'm alive" heartbeat
mcastDropTime = the number a milliseconds before a node is considered "dead" if no heartbeat is received
tcpThreadCount = the number of threads to handle incoming replication requests, optimal would be the same amount of threads as nodes
tcpListenAddress = the listen address (bind address) for TCP cluster request on this host,
in case of multiple ethernet cards.
auto means that address becomes
InetAddress.getLocalHost().getHostAddress()
tcpListenPort = the tcp listen port
tcpSelectorTimeout = the timeout (ms) for the Selector.select() method in case the OS
has a wakup bug in java.nio. Set to 0 for no timeout
printToScreen = true means that managers will also print to std.out
expireSessionsOnShutdown = true means that
useDirtyFlag = true means that we only replicate a session after setAttribute,removeAttribute has been called.
false means to replicate the session after each request.
false means that replication would work for the following piece of code: (only for SimpleTcpReplicationManager)
<%
HashMap map = (HashMap)session.getAttribute("map");
map.put("key","value");
%>
replicationMode = can be either 'pooled', 'synchronous' or 'asynchronous'.
-->
<!--
When configuring for clustering, you also add in a valve to catch all the requests
coming in, at the end of the request, the session may or may not be replicated.

I have set the context path to /tdm in the server.xml file. Should this be placed in context.xml?
Should I have my project as a
WAR file in the webapps of TOMCAT or just a folder i.e. directory structure will fine?
