Java is looking cool

This is a bit of random post and so I apologise, but i dont know anywhere else I could get all excited about the new snazzy get java buttons.
They are just the best thing in the world ever, it makes java look a lot more competant (sounds silly i know, but there old no buttons and horrible download screen just looked really terrible compared to the likes of macromedia's flash) and not only that but the www.java.com is actually promoting games for all types.....mobile, desktop and internet which is again excellent......now most of you guys have already probably noticed all this, im just a bit slow on the uptake lol

I realy hope this is meant to be a joke thread :-/
If Sun wastes time adding new look&Feels or any other
bolox like that (before dealing with the serious
issues of the low level APIs being totally wanked
up),
I will quite possibly have to go round to their head
office and :BEEP: :BEEP: :BEEP: :BEEEEEEEEEEEP:No kidding. Write your own look and feel, or use a third-party L&F. The whole point is, they're pluggable.

  • Sun Java 3D looking glass now available - Package ?

    Hi,
    justread the following:
    https://lg3d-core.dev.java.net/lg3ddevelopersguide.html
    Project Looking Glass Open Source
    Sun Microsystems is contributing Project Looking Glass, based on Java(tm) technology, to the open source community. Project Looking Glass is an exploration project to bring innovative 3D features to the desktop environment. The desktop interface will offer an intuitive, new 3D environment to interact with desktop applications featuring window transparency, rotation, zoom, multiple desktop workspaces and miniaturization.Project Looking Glass offers a platform to realize far richer and more entertaining user experience for existing and new applications in 2D or 3D. The technology enables developers to build highly visual 3D desktops and applications that will run on Linux systems such as Sun's Java Desktop System. The Solaris(tm) environment will be supported in near future.
    What does this mean to you?
    If you're a software developer, please go to http://enews.sun.com/CTServlet?id=63058 … 8531213971 and download this early version of the code and join the community in developing the 3D desktop.
    Interested in using the Project Looking Glass? The project is in very early stages and a commercial version is not available yet. Please go to http://enews.sun.com/CTServlet?id=63058 … 8531213990 to keep up to date on our progress.
    Why Open Source?
    Project Looking Glass is in its infancy, and we'd like to explore lots of ideas and possibilities.  We're releasing the Project Looking Glass code to the whole community to explore every aspect of the technology rather than restricting access to a privileged few. We believe this open development is an excellent model to pursue this exciting and vast opportunity.  So, your involvement is eagerly anticipated. We believe new dimension of developer innovation by making Sun's cutting edge technology available at Sun's 3D Desktop Technology Open Source Project on java.net.
    We have been working for several months on cleaning the software up, providing basic features and functionality key to 3D window management. A key focus was looking at the existing 2D desktop applications, ensuring minimal compatibility and performance problems. The next step is to look what else we can do to foster real world 3D interactivity. We decided to open source this at a very early stage to ensure that we got good feedback from the community.
    What's in the Open Source Project?
    The following features are now available in the Project Looking Glass open source release:
    3D Window Manager Platform - Java 3D based highly scalable 3D platform with client-server model support.
    3D Window Manager and Application Development API - Java API to develop new 3D desktop applications and 3D desktop Window Manager features.
    Native Application Integration Module - Allows developers to run conventional X11 applications in the 3D environment.
    Sample 3D Window Manager - provides a simple sample implementation for testing and demonstration purposes
    3D Environment Lite - Enables developers to run a simplified 3D environment as an application on a Java 3D enabled platform including Linux and Solaris environments. This serves as a development tool to test implementations.
    This is all available at: http://enews.sun.com/CTServlet?id=63058 … 8531213971
    What's the licensing model?
    There are three license choices for developers interested in creating applications using Project Looking Glass.
    For developers who are interested in reviewing, revising, and redistributing the source code as part of their own application, Project Looking Glass has been submitted as an Open Source project on java.net under the GNU Public License, or GPL.
    For developers who are interested in developing an application on top of the existing Project Looking Glass platform without reviewing and/or altering the code base, there is a binary version of the current state of the project available for download under a traditional Binary Code License. This is also available on java.net.
    Finally, for developers or organizations interested in other uses or revising the source code but wish to keep their implementation and related application proprietary, please contact Sun at [email protected].

  • [SOLVED] Java GTK look and feel

    I opened a thread recently about replacing the ugly swing buttons in Java applications. After successfully modifying my ~/.bashrc, all was well. However, these new changes were only present when run from a terminal. I assumed it was because my desktop was still running a bash session that hadn't loaded the new options yet, so I restarted.
    Symptom: Java apps launched from the GUI still have old swing buttons, but have the GTK look and feel when launched from a terminal.
    My .bashrc additions:
    # Java stuff
    export _JAVA_OPTIONS="-Dawt.useSystemAAFontSettings=on -Dswing.aatext=true -Dswing.defaultlaf=com.sun.java.swing.plaf.gtk.GTKLookAndFeel -Dswing.crossplatformlaf=com.sun.java.swing.plaf.gtk.GTKLookAndFeel"
    I use SLiM for a graphical login experience. Could this be affecting it? I'm not sure what happens differently behind the scenes when using a login manager other than that CTRL+ALT+F7 brings me to my GUI when I use one (because all 6 TTYs are still TTYs).
    Last edited by 2mac (2014-01-02 20:51:35)

    I had a similar issue where .xinitrc wasn't working to set an environment variable. I put mine in ~/.config/openbox/environment and it worked. If you run openbox try that. If using a different window manager maybe try /etc/environment I am unsure of how slim functions though maybe there are config files for it. I think slim is on it's way out though (already lacks some compatibility with systemd; they may fix it though upstream I have no idea). But yeah try the environment file way and see if that does it (assuming you have tested your command from the shell and it works how you want).

  • Is there any way to make my iPad look COOL again?

    I absolutely HATE the new look forced on me by updating to IOS 7.  Is there any way to get back the cooler, more stylish, more grownup look of IOS 6?  Used to be, when I picked up my iPad and hit the home button, I was happy.  Now, it just stresses me out.  : (  I just went into the calendar for the first time since updating.  HATE it.  Every day, I find something else visually that makes me not want to use my iPad anymore.

    There is no going back. You can search the App Store for appropriate apps that may look better to you. Personally, I have had no problems with how things look.

  • Java gits -- look here please

    How do I convert a .class file to an .exe file using the Date class which extends an interface that doesn't have a classpath?

    What are you going on about? It makes perfect sense to a git.But not if you understand Java.
    How do I convert a .class file to an .exe file There are many examples on google.
    http://www.google.co.uk/search?num=20&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&c2coff=1&q=exe+java&btnG=Search&meta=
    using the Date class The Date class is a standard class so is always available.
    which extends an interface that doesn't have a classpath?Interfaces do not define a classpath. Thus this is always the case.
    When you convert from .class to .exe you only need to have all your classes/interfaces at this point. Once it is a .exe none of these are required.

  • Java form look and feel changed

    Whenever I load a java form application now, it seems to have reverted back to some non-native form components e.g.
    http://www.codeproject.com/KB/java/theme/theme.gif
    I would prefer this to return to what it was originally and take on the appearance of a windows application. It may be something I have done in the code at one stage or another, but as it now affects all java applications it must be a global setting which has changed somewhere. Does anyone know where I can find this and change it back?
    Thanks

    Hi Gunja,
    Thanks for your reply but it does not help. My problem is some of the YUI functionalities missing or not working properly after the Portal Component deployed to Portal.
    For example, the YUI Overlay dialog box appears at the bottom right of screen but it is suppose to appear in the middle of screen. It work prefectly outside the Portal as a simple HTML page.
    Any idea from any body?
    Please advice.
    Thanks,
    HauChee

  • Java gurus -- look here please

    Is the integer -1 of type int or is it an union between an operand (-) and a positive number?

    Compile this class. Command: javac Test116.java
    class Test116 {
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            int x = -1;
    }Use javap to disassemble the class.
    C> javap -c -classpath . Test116
    Compiled from Test116.java
    class Test116 extends java.lang.Object {
        Test116();
        public static void main(java.lang.String[]);
    Method Test116()
       0 aload_0
       1 invokespecial #1 <Method java.lang.Object()>
       4 return
    Method void main(java.lang.String[])
       0 iconst_m1
       1 istore_1
       2 returnYou can see that the "main" method is composed from three instructions:
    iconst_m1 -> it pushes the constant "-1" to the stack
    istore_1 -> pops the top of the stack and stores it into the first local variable (x)
    return -> return from the method.
    So you can say that "-1" was translated into the constant "- 1".
    But the compiler is smarter: try this program:
    class Test116 {
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            int x = 9 - 10;
    }9 - 10 is equal to -1. Use Javap and see that the output is exactly the same.

  • Why does Java utility look like this - mac god required pls

    Where are my option tabs - this is driving me nutzoid

    Please read this whole message before doing anything.
    This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
    The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
    Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only Guest login created by Find My Mac.
    While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
    Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
    After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
    *Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The Guest login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
    The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
    Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
    Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
    Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
    Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
    Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
    The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    *Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
    Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
    After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Faking 24fps - Trying to make my Video footage look cooler

    Hey guys, I've been working on a music video for sometime now (1080i HDV footage) in FCP and After Effect CS3.
    So I've about finished my final product, but when I preview it on a quality HDTV or quality monitor (looks great on my crappy $150 LCD monitor) it looks so fake or 'consumer video-like'. I bounced a mix of this video into After Effects and applied the Posterize Time effect at '24 fps' and BAMB! It looks like a music video finally! So now my question...
    I'm working in Final Cut and After effects with HDV 1080i footage, what's the best way to get this to 24fps or to fake the 24fps look. I don't need true 24fps unless it's recommended for a better look (not going to film...ever). The Posterize Time effect in After Effects is great and I'll settle for it if there is not a better way or at least some recommendations to try. I'm not sure if that effect is combining frames or dropping them, but the footage is a little too choppy in a few places.
    Thanks for your time!

The buttons are used to save and retrieve text from the text area but, at the same time I am also trying to get the background (textPanel.setBackground) to change color when the buttons are clicked. Any suggestions...

    OK...here's all the code so far. It works the way it is written right now, I just need to add the ability to change the textPanel color when each button is clicked:
    import javax.swing.*;
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    public class MemoSaver extends JFrame implements ActionListener
    public static final int WIDTH = 1000;
    public static final int HEIGHT = 300;
    public static final int LINES = 10;
    public static final int CHAR_PER_LINE = 40;
    private JTextArea theText;
    private String memo1 = "No Memo 1.";
    private String memo2 = "No Memo 2.";
    private String memo3 = "No Memo 3.";
    private String memo4 = "No Memo 4.";
    public MemoSaver()
    setSize(WIDTH, HEIGHT);
    addWindowListener(new WindowDestroyer());
    setTitle("Memo Saver");
    Container contentPane = getContentPane();
    contentPane.setLayout(new BorderLayout());
    JPanel buttonPanel = new JPanel();
    buttonPanel.setBackground(Color.white);
    buttonPanel.setLayout(new FlowLayout());
    JButton memo1Button = new JButton("Save Memo 1");
    memo1Button.addActionListener(this);
    buttonPanel.add(memo1Button);
    JButton memo2Button = new JButton("Save Memo 2");
    memo2Button.addActionListener(this);
    buttonPanel.add(memo2Button);
    JButton memo3Button = new JButton("Save Memo 3");
              memo3Button.addActionListener(this);
    buttonPanel.add(memo3Button);
    JButton memo4Button = new JButton("Save Memo 4");
              memo4Button.addActionListener(this);

    JButton clearButton = new JButton("Clear");

    buttonPanel.add(clearButton);
    JButton exitButton = new JButton("Exit");
              exitButton.addActionListener(this);
    buttonPanel.add(exitButton);
    JButton get1Button = new JButton("Get Memo 1");

    textPanel.setBackground(Color.blue);
    theText = new JTextArea(LINES, CHAR_PER_LINE);
    theText.setBackground(Color.white);
    textPanel.add(theText);
    contentPane.add(textPanel, BorderLayout.CENTER);

    theText.setText(memo2);
    else if (actionCommand.equals("Get Memo 3"))
         theText.setText(memo3);
    else if (actionCommand.equals("Get Memo 4"))
         theText.setText(memo4);
    else
         theText.setText("Error in memo interface");
    public static void main(String[] args)
    MemoSaver guiMemo = new MemoSaver();
    guiMemo.setVisible(true);
    }

  • I'm compiling with 1.5 but java is looking for 1.4 classes,why?

    Hello all,
    I need to compile my project with 1.5 and I have set everything correctly in my ant build script(I think) but I am getting the famous error:
    [javac] class file has wrong version 49.0, should be 48.0
    [javac] Please remove or make sure it appears in the correct subdirectory of the classpath.
    I have been searching on Google for a couple of hours and read the whole thread on this that was locked. Most people with this error seem to want to compile with 1.4 but I'm compiling with 1.5 and for some reason it things I'm doing it with 1.4.
    If I do java -version i see 1.5, If I put -verbose when calling my build script I see 1.5 as the java version.
    I have tried with:
    jrockit_150_12
    jdk150_12

    Easiest explanation would be because you are.
    Actually that is the only explanation.
    If I do java -version i see 1.5, If I put -verbose when calling my build script I see 1.5 as the java version. You can find the 1.4 version and remove it or change the directory.
    One cause of this can because ant runs with a version but there are ways to make it use another one.
    And normally you don't run ant with java but rather via a script file and that specifies the java (for ant.)
