Java.lang.OutOfMemoryError although enough free memory left
hi there,
i am facing a strange problem. i get a java.lang.OutOfMemoryError although my gc monitoring (wily introscope) shows that there is enough free memory left.
so my question is what can lead to a java.lang.OutOfMemoryError. is it possible that a full generation space can lead to an OutOfMemory? I thought that in this case the garbarge collector would move live objects to the next generation?
my settings are:
- JVM 1.4.2
-XX:NewSize=64m
-XX:MaxNewSize=64m
-XX:SurvivorRatio=12
-Xms=1024m
-Xmx=1024m

There are 8 servers and a typical heavy usage day we may have 1 or two machines that have the out of memory or continuous full GC in the logs. When this occurs the phones light up with the people on that machine experiencing slowness.
below is an example of what we see in a file created in the OPMN log folder on the JAS server then this occurs. I think this is the log created when Verbose GC is turned on. I can send you the full log or anything else you need. Thanks

Might be bug 6065704. Search Oracle support for this bug number.

Memory doesn't seem to be an issue, because -Xmx = 1GB is specified in VM args.
This application needs only 200MB to run (Obtained by running the application in eclipse and
checking the heap memory usage).
Not sure whats causing this error? Application runs as single (main) thread
and towards the end of the program multiple threads(they do JDBC tasks) are
are spawned. In this particular case, 3 threads were about to be launched, when
this error occured. Please help in pointing out what the issue is and how this
can be resolved.

Threads take java memory. Normally the solution is to increase the maximum java heap. Doing that depends on the memory that the system supports and the maximum that the VM allows and the default that it uses.
You might want to verify the command line options you are using. You might want to also find out what happens if you use a larger number or smaller one.
And if all else fails you can use a thread pool rather than trying to create seperate threads. -

Out of memory they can result from different causes:
- The application is consuming too many resources inappropriately
- The application is opening and not enough threads are closing, leaving no space for the JVM
- You lose the connection with database, causing the connection pool is saturated, which makes the memory of the container is depleted and reaches its peak.
- The container does not have sufficient resources or is not tuned to meet the load generated. But would recommend to discard the above before using this option, because when using this option could work around the problem but could not really be attacking the cause.

Does that mean you are running CF8 without updater1 applied? If updater1 was there I would expect JVM 1.6.0_04. Give that is correct you could apply updater1 and once that is done even update the JVM to a more current version. I see Java Dev Kit 1.6.0_23 is current, I have successfully used CF8 with 1.6.0_22.
There might be some interesting detail in the coldfusion-out.log file which likely is in [CF]\runtime\logs or [Jrun]\logs pending server or multiserver.

One app service getting "java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space"
We are running a commercial app on WebLogic 9.2. Two physical servers with 5 application processes running on each in a single cluster. on the server in question, we have 5.5 gigs of free ram at the moment and still getting the message below.
We have 10 app servers and one is getting this message. the full text of it is:

I dug back through the logs and found it started a couple of weeks ago. I have been able to log into this app server without issue.
Something else I have noticed is that the total heap size for all the app services have shrunk from the initial value of 1.5G - they have all dropped down into the 500 meg range. Is this normal? Why has this one not increased the size of the heap if it is running out of memory?
I could restart the service for this app server but I would not know the cause and since it is a production server where I am not recieving complaints, I am hesitant to go through the res tape to do a re-start.
Any information or past experience with this type issue is greatly appreciated.

apart from the above what I would normally is, while zipping the file I would exclude heavy content file and upload the file.
after uploading file, just go and paste excluded file in respective folder.

We are evaluating Coherence for our requirements and I am quite impressed with filtering, near cache, etc
We are running on Windows XP, 3GB RAM, jdk1.6.0_04 and tests are simple – 2 cache instances and one instance of ExtendTcpCacheService sitting between client and distributed cache.
It just fly’s when inserting/putting about 20k rows/objects in to cache but doesn’t seem to fly for more data.
eg: with 200k objects/rows, we get the following exception
java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: requested 4096000 bytes for GrET in C:\BUILD_AREA\jdk6_04\hotspot\src\share\vm\utilities\growableArray.cpp. Out of swap space?
But, the exception is not consistent. We also get following

Roguelike / java.lang.OutOfMemoryError
I'm currently working on a Java RogueLike.
Each level is stored in a Vector grid[][]=new Vector[gridsize][gridsize]
I wonder why i cannot use gridsize greater than approximatly 230X230 without getting an OutOfMemoryError.
It appears to occur during the level (current environnement) generation.
During this generation a lot of Objects are created and stored in the grid.
What is the general meaning of the java.lang.OutOfMemoryError ?
What kind of memory is it ? (it doesn't seem to be the RAM)

But this is a 2D array of Vectors, which can hold other references. So as you create Objects and add their references to the Vector, each one is eating up memory and expanding the size of your grid. You'll need to profile this app to see where all these Objects are coming from.
I'd think about why you have to add them to this grid. It guarantees that none of the Objects you've added will ever be garbage collected, so your memory requirements will only grow with time. Unless you have a way of removing Objects from the grid when you're done with them, it's only a matter of time before you get an OutOfMemoryError.

Hi Tlwi and Marc,
Im facing the same error in my environment. This is an Oracle Application Server which hosts a J2EE envionment. The application works fine without any issues, but all of a sudden the following error comes up and stalls the application. I have to restart the conatiner to handle the situation, but this is not the solution.
Based on my searching it reveals that this error does not mean that the jvm is running out of heap space instead it uses some memory outside the heap to unzip the zip files.
Can you let me know on the solution that you had applied or what can be done to fix this as i have enough heap space.

Nitin.making it 512 temporarily working fine, but my concern was something must have been eating all the memory.
I did run bcc with 128 MB and deployed lots of initial data too, didn't face the issue in recent past with same versions and same build size.

I m not running productionAgent,But I didn't make that essential while setting agent.

I doubt that the following USER_MEM_ARGS which u have mentioned in the *"setDomainEnv.sh"* is not taking effect....
USER_MEM_ARGS="-Xms1024m -Xmx1024m -XX:PermSize=128m -XX:MaxPermSize=512m"
Can u check the STDOUT of the Server or first few lines of Server Log....there u will be able to see that what value it is taking actually to startup. Sometimes it happens if we set the MEM_ARGS values in if---else block then mistakenly it takes the default values....
Because 512M Memory for PermGen is enough for most of the Applications and Servers.
One more thing .... How r u starting your Servers ...Using StartScripts or using NodeManager (through AdminConsole)? Because there are different ways of setting the Memory Arguments for these two scenarios. I am currently writing code for a database software using Joins, Collections, Vectors, etc. and when running the code I keep getting a java.lang.OutOfMemoryError. The thing is that I have a parser that parses through different XML files and Java files. It seems as though some of my collections need more space or something else doesn't have enough memory for the parser to pick up everything. It only happens after I add a new constrainable or selectable to the XML file and try and run Queries with that (at least that is where I think the problem is). At this point I have no clue as to what is going on. Could someone please help me out.

I am trying to use JDeveloper 10.1.3.0.4 (SU2) on Windows XP SP2. My machine is almost new and has 2.5 GB of RAM and 2 processors with 3.0 GHz each. Should be enough, right?
When I try to startup JDeveloper, I am often getting an exception java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space. At other times, I see that JDeveloper is using an awful lot of virtual memory - e.g. 590 MB. Then at least, JDeveloper opens normally, but it's not stable at all.
I guess, there's something in the workspace - created in JDeveloper 9.0.5 and now migrated - that I am trying to open that is giving trouble, because in the lower right corner I see a message "scanning sources". This message does not want to go away. JDeveloper continues to scan. When I try to edit, I get a light blue screen after some time and JDeveloper hangs. What is happening?

The constructor of MyFrame creates an object of type WrapCheckers3D.
The constructor of WrapCheckers3D creates an object of type MyFrame.
This leads to an infinite recusion of object creation that fills your memory heap. You need to get rid of that recursion.
Usually you'll get another exception in that case (namely a StackOverflowError), but you get a OOM-Error, probably because you create big objects during the recursion.
