JAVA: openjdk6 vs jre

This is a question which has been bugging me for a long time.
WHAT EXACTLY DOES JRE OFFER WHICH NEEDS PEOPLE TO INSTALL IT INSTEAD OF OPENJDK6 ?
I currently have jre installed, but I want to install openjdk6. Please advice me.
Also, in the last week of may, I am joining programming classes in Core Java where they teach via Eclipse. Would the programming experience be the same with both the packages ?
And yeah, jre is *just* jre, but openjdk6 is openjdk6 (note the bolded part). If the 7th version comes out, will I need a manual removal of openjdk6 to install openjdk7 ?

Will I get the block collapse feature I get in Geany ?
And does it have controls for invoking the compiler ?
Yes, Vim does do code folding, as well as has complete control over compilers. The latter is a combination of having both a powerful internal scripting engine, as well as can call any external command.
One hurdle that you'll have to get over going from Geany to Vim is appearance. Geany is very aesthetically pleasing. gVim at it's best looks nowhere near as nice. I'm using Vim in urxvt. It took some getting use to.
MetalheadGautham wrote:PS: I have a friend who is much junior to me as far as linux usage is concerned, but he says that 3 hours with vim made him think that its the bestest best thing in the world. Says that it enhances productivity a lot.
It took me three weeks before I was reasonably happy with my .vimrc file! There's a learning curve, but it will become obvious very quickly just how efficient it is.

  • Jar files download problems in Java Webstart with JRE 1.6

We have encountered a few problems in Java Webstart with JRE 1.6
In JRE 1.5, the jar files are getting downloaded onto the client
    machine with it's original names.
    Example :
    Server File Name : acm.jar
    Client File Name : RMacm.jar
But in JRE 1.6, the jar files are getting downloaded with improper file names.
    Example :
    Server File Name : acm.jar
    Client File Name : 4fb074cc-66fc7407
Moreover the path itself seems to be invalid.
    Example Path :
    JRE 1.5 path:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application
    Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javaws\https\D17.16.23.11\P443\DMtest\DMwebStart
    JRE 1.6 path:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application
    Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\12
Due to this, we are facing Classpath problems.
What changes do we have to make to the code, for Java
    Webstart to work ?
We are using JBoss 4.0.4 and JDK 1.5 in the Server
On the client machine, we have IE 6 and JRE 1.6.01
    Help would be appreciated.

  • Java.exe in \jdk1.4.0\bin VS. java.exe in \jre\bin ?

    Hi,
What is different java tools in bin directory from
    java tools in jre\bin?
Why do we need these duplication?
and what kinds of role jre directory do?
If anyone give any more comments about jdk directory structure
with the reason, it will be big help.
    Thank you..

i guess you have installed the java development kit ( JDK ) . I you read the documentation JDK comes with development tools + java runtime environment ( JRE ) . if you have a look at this picture http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.1/images/j2se9.2_arch3.1.jpg .It will make it more clear . so what you see in jre folder is for the runtime execution . once you have compiled the java file you you only need the jre content to run it . where as other flders contain development tools , documentation etc .

  • Java Sound in JRE 1.5.4?

    Hello,
I recently installed the Java Run-time envir.. 1.5.4, for windows. Changing from the 1.5.3 version, but in the 1.5.3 version I could play .wav files, but now I cannot.
Would anyone know if the wav player has been taken out, and has to be installed separately?
    Thank you

There is no JRE 1.5.4 and there never will be (Sun said there won't be 1.5.x releases with x>0). There is a JRE 1.5.0 Update 4 'though (or 1.5.0_04 in old-speak). I assume you're talking about that.
Is it possible that you installed some additional components inside your JRE-directory that didn't get migrated?

  • (HP Share to Web)/(java 1.5 JRE) incompatibility problem?

A Java application developed with JDK 1.3, and which used JRE 1.3, ran fine, but upon migrating from Java 1.3 to Java 1.5 (i.e. compiled with JDK 1.5 and using JRE 1.5), the application started having problems running on a given machine, which would give the fatal error, "javaw.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows." This error would occur after the application would start and when the user would start to interact with application. The problem was traced to the application HP Share-to-Web, which was running on the machine in question. This problem would happen on machines running Win2K and Win98, and the aforementioned application, HP Share-to-Web, but would not happen on XP. When the application, HP Share-to-Web, was uninstalled, the Java 1.5 application would work fine. The following log file concerning this error was written on the Win98 machine. Hey..if anyone has any idea what be a happening, or if someone has experienced this same problem, any response would be appreciated.

  • Managing JAVA JDK and JRE with Package Management in Solaris 11.1

I want to manage Java JDK & JRE in an Solaris environment using Package Management I'm currently running Solaris 11.1 in a VMWare host. My current latest Java release is JDK1.7.0_07 and JRE1.7.0_07. I want to upgrade to JDK1.7.0_17 & JRE1.7.0_17 using Package Management. I've tried on several occasions to upgrade to latest release of Java but I have not been successful. Each time I try using the Package Management GUI or use command line they appear to be successful but the new release does not show.
What could I be doing wrong?

  • Java Checker needs JRE to install??

    Hi Everyone,
I have just downloaded the Java Checker for Personal Java and am having big trouble installing it. Could someone please advise. This is what it says in the install file:
The JavaCheck installation file is a zip archive that contains a set of
self-extracting class files. The JavaCheck download page describes the
correct method for extracting these files by using the "jre" command.
If you have tried to install JavaCheck by downloading the zip archive and then using an unzip utility to extract its contents, you have made a mistake. You should delete the unzipped files and directories and start over, being sure to use the "jre" command. Read the download web page for detailed instructions.
Could someone please tell me what command I have to use to do this. When I run java against the install class (which I extracted from the zip) I get an exception of not being able to find the file.
    Thanks

  • Running a java exe without JRE

i have created an exe for a java application by using a C program...The c program invokes the DOS shell and runs the JAVA application...
now how do i make this exe executable on a windows XP machine without JDK being installed...
The second issue is that if i wrap my exe with the required JRE components the size becomes too large...how do i ship my java application as a single EXE runnable on all WINDOWS machines!!!!!!!!!!!

Including the JRE with your app, if you zip it, will add about 14MB to your distribution. It's annoying but in the days of broadband, it's not so much of a problem. You could also check this:

  • Problem installing java plugin from jre 1.4.0 on netscape 4.79

We tried to install the newest java plugin on netscape
4.79 on our Solaris 2.8 machine. Followed the instruction, we first downloaded j2re-1_4_0-solsparc.sh, ran the script to create a
directory called j2re1.4.0, then set the NPX_PLUGIN_PATH environment variable to the directory
containing the javaplugin.so file. When we tried to
start netscape, we got the following error message:
INTERNAL ERROR on Browser End: Could not load the function CreateOJIFactory
System error?:: No such file or directory
What is the problem? Any fix?
    Thanks

    Hi,
From your description, it seems you've read http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/install-solaris.html#plugin . This also states that the supported Netscape builds go up to 4.77 before moving on to Netscape 6.x. And in this case it appears that this isn't just because the documentation hasn't kept up with recent activity from Netscape. Netscape 4.79 appears to treat the plugin differently, and/or still expect the old Activator code to be in place to use it.
I'm using the 1.4.0 JRE with no trouble at all with Netscape 7.0PR1. If anything this - and the Mozilla 1.0RC2 build that it's based on - are far more stable than any of the NS4.x releases. The only reason I can see for staying with 4.x is that it'd little more lax with the HTML it reads, and displays some bad pages that NS6/7 refuses to display.
Recent Solaris releases come with Netscape 6 as well, and it's easily downloadable. I'm sorry I can't be more help than this.

  • Installation the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) on Red Hat Enterprise Linux

    Hi gurus,
I´m trying to install an ECC 6.0 SR3 (ABAP) on RHEL v.5 with Oracle DB.
But as I am newbie I have some doubts, in this point is with the Java Version JRE that is required in sap installion process.
I already installed the JRE through RPM Package File (I followed the instructions/steps described in this url -  http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/jre/install-linux.html ) and I don´t have any problem... by the way I installed the JRE version 1.4.2_25 b02.
But after the installation I had a question, how do I check if the package was installed correctly? I insert the commad  java -version, and the result was this:
    java version "1.4.2"
gij (GNU libgcj) version 4.1.2 20080704 (Red Hat 4.1.2-46)
Copyright (C) 2006 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
This is free software; see the source for copying conditions.  There is NO
warranty; not even for MERCHANTABILITY or FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.
With this information I really do not know if the version 25 was installed...
I already check if there is some directory with the new file, and actually there exist in the directory /usr/java but this is not tell me if this is the new one!!
It´s possible to know which one is installed with other command by terminal?
    Best regards,
    Joao Dimas - Portugal

1- Ok Markus, but for me it is strange how I could know that the JDK was wrong, that because I don´t know why I have to install this component  for IBM JDK ...... This server has a x86_64 bit architecture, where is related to IBM? I did not understood that sorry... and the component that is installed is 1.4.2 JDK with last version which is 25 to x64 bit (for my x86_64 architecture) ... Forgive my ignorance here, but I don´t understand Markus! Where there is a relationship with the AMD64 architecture? If you are correct... if this is a AMD64 therefore I have to download new installation media DVD´s for this installation for AMD64 architecture, isn´t it?  Because all the dvd's that I have here to install this system is refer to the version x86_64!
    X86_64 == AMD64 == x64 see
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86-64
This is all the same. AMD invented the "64bit extension" for their x86 CPUs, later Intel licensed that extension. All those terms are synonyms.
    So if
    java -version
does not give you the IBM JDK your installation will fail.
If you check the PAM (http://service.sap.com/pam) you'll see that for 64bit Linux (AMD64, x86_64, x64) only the IBM JDK is supported because Sun has no 64bit JDK for this (ancient) version 1.4.2 for Linux x86_64.
    [root@redhatsap IM_LINUX_X86_64]# swapon -s
    > Filename                                Type            Size    Used    Priority
    > /dev/mapper/VolGroup01-LogVol01         partition       5931000 0       -1
This means that I have about 5,9 Gb of RAM memory?
That means that you have 5,9 GB of SWAP. You get your total memory using the command "free" or use the command "top".
If I need to allocate more memory, as sap recommends 2xRAM, with 8 GB of RAM, how can I do that, in installation guide it tell me to go read the manual for linux... what documentation?!
Honestly, this here is not the place to learn Linux.
I'd use e. g. Google and enter "Redhat 5 add swap space"
    http://centos.org/docs/5/html/Deployment_Guide-en-US/s1-swap-adding.html
(btw: CentOS is a RedHat clone, it's the same software and so the same commands).
