Java playing havoc with permissions in Snow Leopard

My wife has a 24" iMac, 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 with 4GB RAM. She likes to play games offered on Facebook. Her favorite browser is Firefox. But, playing these Facebook games plays havoc with the permissions on her machine. The machine slows way down and the mouse does not respond well. Using Onyx I repair the permissions, which takes about 5 minutes. Most of the repairs are being made to System/Library/Java and System/Library/CoreServices and other files within the System folder, especially those with a .jar extension. The list of repairs is exceptionally long. Then I fix the permissions using Disk Utility. Again, the same type of permissions are being fixed, the list is very long and it takes about 5 minutes. The iMac runs fine after fixing the permissions -- until the next time she logs on and plays a game. I have disabled Java on both Firefox and Safari; that doesn't seem to make any difference. Any suggestions as to what I can do to stop this problem? It's very frustrating for my wife because her machine slows down so much and her mouse doesn't work. It's frustrating for me because every time she logs off of Firefox and her games, I have to fix her machine!

These are currently mine, which are endlessly repeated. They are NOT errors, it's that Apple didn't bother to update the Permissions database along with Java updates. As long as you get the message at the end "Permissions repair complete," everything is fine. You are wasting your time doing Permissions repair. The problem has nothing to do with Permissions.
Instead, when this occurs, open Activity Monitor in Utilities. Check to see which processes or applications, if any, are hogging the CPU. Those games may be using huge amounts of Flash (through Firefox) not Java. (If you have disabled Java, then, obviously, those games aren't running through that.) And your RAM and CPU may not be up to the task. Then switch to the Memory tab and see how much Free and Inactive there are. Also, what are the numbers for Page Ins, Page Outs, and Swap used? Also check to see how much Real Memory Firefox is using during one of these episodes.
Which Firefox are you running?

I've just upgraded to Photoshop CC 2014 and it's playing havoc with my work flow.
    i)  From LR5.5, when I click edit with "Photoshop CC 2014" - it opens PS CC 2014 but doesn;t open the image
ii) Whenever I try and use Nik Viveza it crashes PS CC 2014 when applying the changes from viveza.  I've checked that I have the latest version of Nik software.  It was working fine PS CC
I'm now going back to CC until these can be resolved.
    Thanks
    Chris

I was going to reply that I have multiple monitors and have had zero problems with Viveza used with PS CC 2014.  Then I realized two things. One I didn't know if the OP was on windows or the Mac and, two, if the Mac was it a Big Cat or geographic system.  The display characteristics differ greatly between the three systems.
It sure would be nice to have a one line signature specifying the poster's system available for use on this board.

I'm trying to update my parent's iMac G5 with OS X Snow Leopard and unable to do so because it doesn't have an Intel processor. Are all new upgrades going to be unavailable? What is the last available upgrade? Is it possible to get an Intel processor installed?
    Thank you

Actually you can upgrade to snow leopard.  I have an iMac G4 and upgraded to snow leopard by installing it using an external DVD RW drive.  It was complicated but it worked.  I ended up going back to using tiger though.  I liked it better the simple old school way.

Yes, you can and should. The DVD belong with the MBP. You should use the original DVD to erase the disk and install Snow Leopard prior to sale.
You can't sell it with Lion because it is authorized under your user ID.

I have a white Macbook 2009 on OSX Lion. It came with the OSX Snow Leopard CD, I erased the HDD and am trying to install the OSX from disc but am getting "cannot install OSX from disc" message. What can I do?
I got the macbook from a friend a few years ago and it already had OSX Lion installed. Whenever it boots from the Snow Leopard disc it says it cannot install from disc. Is there anythingI can do or should I take it to an Apple store to get them to boot OSX Lion for me?

Insert your Snow Leopard disc and restart, press and hold the C key as soon as you hearthe startup chime, hold C until you see the Apple Logo. When your computer starts up you'll be at the first install screen, choose your language and click the arrow to go to the next screen. This screen has a menu bar, from the Utilities menu select Disk Utility, select your hard drive, this is the one with the manufacturers name or numbers, click the partition tab and then delete any existing partitions by selecting them and clicking the minus. In the drop down box select one partition and click apply. Name your hard drive and click erase. When it's done quit DU and go back to the installer, install Snow Leopard. When the installer is done and the computer is back up and running run Software Update to get to 10.6.8

I want to install an old airport express, the ones which are directly plugged into the socket - but it does not work with Maverick or Snow Leopard - can I configure it with a windows pc?

The Mac running Snow Leopard should be able to configure virtually any version of the AirPort Express.
Tell us what steps that you are taking to configure the Express and what happens after each step.

Is there a "password corral" App provided with the Mac/Snow Leopard?
Someplace to keep all manner of passwords one accumulates?

Keychain does an okay job of it.
But I much prefer 1Password. It costs $39. There's a promotion on at MacUpdate right now, where you can get it bundled with Parallels Desktop, Tech Tool Pro, and seven other decent apps for only $50, instead of the $367 all the apps would cost if bought individually.

  • Scanner that Works with 10.6 Snow Leopard?

Has anyone found a scanner that works with 10.6 Snow Leopard and also handles 35mm negatives & slides? My HP Scanjet 4570c is “dead in water.” HP has said they will not provide a driver update for this model.

If you, like me, are ****** off about how poorly HP is handling/not handling this scanner functionality issue then I suggest that you email the CEO, Chairman, and the Board of Directors of HP. I just finished sending my email to all of them. You can do the same by going to the web site listed below and follow the instructions on that web page. When I sent my messages I typed, "Do you care that HP is losing customers?" in the SUBJECT line of my email. I seriously doubt that this will result a solution to our problems, but at least you can let them know that they have lost another customer.

Probably not, since those are Lion/ML items and SL doesn't have them. That's my WAG.

    Maybe:

If you find Snow Leopard is really required, you may find getting a used or refurbished Mac that shipped new before July 20, 2011 is preferable*:

Your iMac needs to be a mid-2007 or newer model. See this page for specs supported, and assuming you meet them, you can upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion (see step 2 on the linked page).

  • I have a macbook (2006) with 10.6 snow leopard installed. Can i get EA's origin and sims. It has a Intel Core 2 Duo

I have a Macbook 2006 with 10.6 snow leopard installed. I was wondering if i could get EA's origin download and sims 3 the game? The laptop has an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor.

Unfortunately no, I have e exact same problem. Our ancient laptops are to the full extent of upgrading available for its time..., I'm trying to find an older version of origin to download to my Mac at the moment... Take my email if you want and if I come across anything ill send you the link. The only other thing I can think of is to upgrade the entire Mac software to the newest version but that includes wiping out the entire system and hard drive and locating the software disc to do that and I'm not even sure if it will process all of that information since apple conciders our laptops "vintage" there's no way to go back because they don't support the software for these older ones anymore.
    Sorry.
