Java plugin

Hi,
I've just started using plugins so I'm not sure if I understand this correctly. (not really a web programmer)
If an applet is built with JRE 1.4.1 and the pluginspage tag references the corresponding install URL do I have to be concerned about the compability of the underlying OS and the plugin version?
In other words say I have classic Mac OS running netscape 4.x can I still view applets build with JRE1.2 and above??

Well, not really. Basically, to truly force a Plugin you do have to use the <OBJECT> tag. I say not really because if the user has a plugin installed that is 1.3.1_01a or later, the Plugin will use the highest on installed. However, this only guarantees use of the latest plugin, not the one you want. The <OBJECT> tag is the only real alternative for any serious web application.
I'll give you a link to a web page that discusses the different possibilities:

  • Fedora 13: After upgrading from FF3.6 to FF6.0.2 I no longer have a Java plugin. How do I configure the Java Plugin for FF 6 ? There is no Java Plugin at the site

    I am Fedora 13x64 bit. I just installed FF v6.0.2 from the FF download site. I backed up the existing FF 3.6 as firefox_old
    I need to have a Java plugin to access company site, how do I configure the Java Plugin ?
    At the Plugin area in FF6 there is no Java Plugin available, even after a search.
    I have Java 1.6.0 installed in the OS at:
    /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0/jre/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so
    I googled how to configure Java Plugin for FF 6 for Fedora 13 and the trick was to create a soft link from /home/<userID>/.mozilla/plugins to the above libnpjp2.so

  • Java Plugin 1.3.1 on RedHat Linux 7.1

    I downloaded and installed the Java SDK 1.3.1 for linux.
    When I try to view an applet written in Netscape I get the following error message on the bottom left corner of the browser window:
    ClassdefError javax.japplet not found.
    However, I can see the applet in the appletviewer.
    In order to install the plugin I did the following:
    I removed the old plugin:
    rm -fr $Home/.netscape/.java
    rm $Home/.netscape/plugin/javaplugin.so
    Then, to install the plugin I set the netscape environment variable :
    export NPX_PLUGIN_Path = /usr/java/jdk1.3.1/jre/bin/plugin/ns4/javaplugin.so
    How can I tell whether the netscape 4.7 browser is using this plugin??
    Could someone please tell me what is causing the error?? Please be very specific, I am new to RH Linux.

  • I am running 10.5.8, and just updated my java to java 5 update10. Now my firefox is missing the Java plugin, and I can't load any Java applet at all. When I try it with Safari, it hangs when certain Java applet loads. HELP!!!

    Suddenly my Java plugin is missing and i can't load any Java with Firefox at all, even though i have it enabled in the browser! i've tried loading in java embedding plugin, but it doesn't work. what should i do???

    It's not in Tools> Add-ons >plugins?  Should be Java Plug-in 2 for NPAPI browsers 13.5.0. What are you seeing there? I don't think it's called the embedding plugin any longer.
    Might try getting the Firefox 5 standalone application. Trash the current one and replace it. Doing this won't affect your Profile or any settings.
    http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    If it's enabled, how can it be missing?
    If this doesn't work, ask here. No need to register. Make sure you put (Mac) in the title.

    We are using Oracle ERP in our company which is a web based ERP system. I am using firefox to work in ERP for convinieince pf working and using internet at the same time. This requires a plugin provided by oracle oajinit.exe to be installed in Plugins it is a JAVA plugin which opens the ERP Screens. This works fine in versions prior to 3.6 version of firefox. However, after upgrading to 3.6 version the forms do not open and firefox crashes. Due to this i am not able to upgrade to the latest version else i'll have to operate the ERP in internet explorer and using firefox for browsing which i do not want. • Java plugin causing Firefox to crash

    I installed the newest Java plugin today and it asked me to restart Firefox. Now it crashes as soon as I open it. It will not open in Safe Mode because it won't stay open for more than half a second. I tried re-installing it and restarting my computer and it's having the same problem. I can't open about:crashes because it won't stay open.

    Make sure that you've installed the 32 bit Java version because Firefox is a 32 bit application.

  • The Java plugin has created a time unfriendly issue with my e-mail account, I can not open or send any e-mail without using this plugin, how can I eliminate this problem without dropping m. firefox?

    A few days ago I tried to e-mail a friend, when I started A box came up and it required me to add a plugin..Java. I contacted my e-mail courier and microsoft, they told me that is was a plugin from Mozilla Firefox. Since then I must go through Java to send or open an e-mail... this is NOT to my satisfaction, it takes too long for all of this to open and if it is not cleared , I am dropping Mozilla and going elsewhere. Why has this occurred? Is this a result of the last update? If so can I delete the last update and continue on the other version?
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == last week

    Sorry, I have no idea what you mean by '''"The Java plugin has created a time unfriendly issue with my e-mail account, I can not open or send any e-mail without using this plugin,"'''.
    If you think your problem is caused by the Java plugin, you should visit the Java support forum for assistance.
    http://forum.java.sun.com/index.jspa
    If you could explain what you mean by '''"time unfriendly''' issue with my e-mail account", maybe we'll be able to help you solve that issue.
    It might be helpful for us if we knew exactly which web-mail provider you are using. It seems strange to me that viewing or sending web-mail would actually "need" Java for operation, its more likely that some other item on the web page needs Java to run some advertising or other garbage that isn't a necessary part of the web-mail functionality you want to use.

    <PARAM NAME="type" VALUE="application/x-java-applet;version=1.3">
    </OBJECT>
    But it is downloading java plugin 1.3.1_03.
    Can anybody help me
    Thanks & Regards
    Raja

    Using object tags is the correct way and only way to download the plugin and let the client decide whether he can download it r not. There is no way to install automatically
    I dont think there is a way to install automatically without a user intervention coz, it can open the floodgates for potential hackers.
    Can u cite an example about which programs can be installed automatically and why do u want the plugin to be installed automatically?
    ciao

  • I have windows 7 64bit. When i installed firefox and then java, i do not have java tm platform or any java plugin. I can't watch free movie's online!!

    As i told i have Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit version. I install java and have problems with Java Deployment Toolkit and Java(TM) Platform SE. It won't show in add-on. I cant watch movies. When I play movie it says java is missing but when I use IE I can watch some movies. I try reinstaling Java and even reinstall Windows. But problem was still there. I run java check (from Firefox) to see if java is installed and it confrmed. I even try diferent versions of Java and Mozilla. I even use JDK and JRE. I install java for 64bit and mozilla is also for 64bit version of system.
    I have another laptop with 32 bit version and everything works great. Installation procedure was same (only used 32bit versions of softwares).
    When I go to control panel and java options (windows 64bit) enable java content in your browser is marked. But in advanced tab default java for browser (mozilla family) is unmarked. And when I mark box and leave (apply then ok) and return box is empty. It wont confirm. In 32bit version of laptop i have alsou java plugin but in 64 bit it is not there. Here is a picture what I was talking about. This is on windows 32 bit for 64bit is some just box for mozilla family is empty and under that java plugin do not exist.

    hope someone have solution!!

    you don't have to reinstall firefox or java, you can just download and install the 32bit-java next to your currently installed java version. it should then be picked up by firefox and be displayed under firefox > addons > plugins...

  • Does Firefox support java applets if the "Next generation plugin" is disabled via the Java plugin control panel.

    I'm still trying to get a definitive answer to this question.
    My applet is not "Next Generation compliant". When we run our applet in Internet Explorer it runs fine as long as we disable the "Next Generation Plugin" via the Java plugin control panel. However our applet does not run in Firefox if the "next generation applet" is disabled.
    Is it a requirement that if I want to run an applet in Firefox 3.6.x or higher that the "next generation plugin" be enabled via the Java plugin control panel.

    Current Firefox versions (3.6 and later) can only run Java applets via the Next Generation plugin.

  • How do I get the SUN Java plugin to work in Firefox 8.0 or Seamonkey 2.6?

    After a recent automatic upgrade of Firefox on my Xubuntu 11.04 system, the SUN Java plugin is no longer recognized by Firefox. I tried the old method of manually symlinking the corresponding library to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins and various other directories that contained plugins, but to no avail. Other plugins like Flash work fine.
    Having the SUN Java plugin working is a must for me in order to be able to access my online bank, the Citrix server at my workplace, etc.

    Also,
    Exit Firefox and rename the '''pluginreg.dat''' in your profile folder and start Firefox again. This may help to reinitialize the plugins that Firefox recognizes.

  • How Do I know If I have Java Plugin 1.5

    I just purchased a network drive that moves files on a website. In order to use the Drag and Drop feature, the instructions say I need Java Plugin Version 1.5 on my browser. I have both the most recent versions of Safari and Firefox.  Neither allows the drag and drop of the files. The website says that the Drop and Drag only works if there is the Java Plugin Version 1.5 installed, but when I try to download the plugin, the site states that if I have a Mac with Snow Leopard, I automatically have the plugin.  I am trying to find out why this drag and drop does not work. Any suggestions?

    Thank you for your answer.  My problem is with the software for the Seagate GoFlex Home wireless network drive, which is controlled by a company website, which is logged into. One of the primary features is the ability to drag and drop large groups of files from Finder to a box on the website which supposedly transfers these files to the network drive.  There is information in the manual for the drive, that this works based on the java plugin 1.5. When it didn't work, I thought I did not have the correct plugin as part of Safari, but you have shown me how to check, and that does not seem to be the problem.  I will try to get further answers from Seagate, though I do not see that its other users have raised this issue on its forum website.

  • Steps to create your own self signed certificate with java plugin working

    You need two tools that comes with your jdk which are keytool and jarsigner.
    Steps explain below in detail. Don't use netscape signtool, it will NEVER work!
    * keytool -genkey -keyalg rsa -alias tstkey -keypass 2br2h2m -dname "cn=Test Object Signing Certificate, o=AI Khalil, ou=Java Products, c=AU"
    cn = Certificate name
    o = organistation
    ou = organistation unit
    c = country (first two letters)
    If don't put the -dname, you can fill it line by line.
    The -keypass has to be verify at the end, and you have to wait for it to create the rsa signing keys.
    On NT by default it will put the alias information at D:\WINNT\Profiles\Administrator (if log in as administrator) with the default file called ".keystore". Windows 98 etc, don't know, search for .keystore
    file. When you update it, check for the timestamp change and you know if you at the right spot.
    You can store your alias information via the -storepass option to your current directory you work on, if you don't want to update the default .keystore file?
    The .keystore contains a list of alias so you don't have to do this process again and again.
    Another tip if you want your certificate encryption validity to be more than the default one month is simply
    add the -validity <valDays>, after the -genkey option, to make your certificate usage for encryption to last much longer.
    Note: You MUST use the -keyalg rsa because for starters the rsa encyption alogorthim is supported on ALL browsers instead of the default DSA and the other one SHA. Java plugins must work with the RSA algorthim when signing applets, else you will get all sorts of weird errors :)
    Do not use signtool because thats a browser dependant solution!! Java plugin is supposed to work via running it owns jre instead of the browser JVM. So if you going to use netscape signtool, it starts to become a mess! ie certificate will install, but applet won't start and give you funny security exception errors :)
    * keytool -export -alias tstkey -file MyTestCert.crt
    It will read the alias information in the .keystore information picking up the rsa private/public keys info and
    create your self sign certificate. You can double click this certificate to install it? But don't think this step is needed but maybe for IE? Someone else can check that part.
    If you make a mistake with the alias, simply keytool -delete -v -alias <your alias key>
    If not in default .keystore file, then simply keytool -delete -v -alias <your alias key> -keystore <your keystore filename>
    * Put your classes in your jar file, my example is tst.jar.
    * jarsigner tst.jar tstkey
    Sign your testing jar file with your alias key that supports the RSA encryption alogorthim.
    * jarsigner -verify -verbose -certs tst.jar
    Check that its been verified.
    The last step is the most tricky one. Its to do with having your own CA (Certified Authority) so you don't
    have to fork out money straight away to buy a Verisign or Twarte certificate. The CA listing as you see in
    netscape browsers under security/signers, is NOT where the plugin looks at. The plugin looks at a file called
    CACERTS. Another confusion is that the cacerts file is stored in your jre/lib/security AND also at your
    JavaSoft/Jre/<Java version>/lib/security. When you install the Java plugin for the first time in uses your
    JavaSoft folder and its the cacerts file that has to be updated you add your own CA, because thats where
    the plugin look at, NOT THE BROWSER. Everything about plugin is never to do with the browser!! :)
    * keytool -import -file MyTestCert.crt -alias tstkey -keystore "D:\Program Files\JavaSoft\JRE\1.3.1\lib\security/cacerts"
    Off course point to your own cacerts file destination.
    Password to change it, is "changeit"
    Before you do this step make a copy of it in its own directory in case you do something silly.
    This example will add a CA with alias of my key called "tstkey" and store to my example destination.
    * keytool -list -v -keystore "E:/jdk/jdk1.3/jre/lib/security/cacerts"
    List to see if another CA is added with your alias key.
    Your html, using Netscape embed and Internet explorer object tags to point to the java plugin,
    your own self sign applet certificate should work
    Cheers
    Abraham Khalil

    I follow Signed Applet in Plugin, and it's working on
    my computer. Thanks
    But When I open my applet from another computer on
    network, why it does not work ..?
    How to make this applet working at another computer
    without change the policy file ..?
    thanks in advance,
    AnomYou must install the certificate on that computers plugin. Can this be done from the web? can anyone suggest a batch file or otherwise that could do this for end users?
    I want a way for end users to accept my cert as Root or at least trust my cert so I dont have to buy one. I am not worried about my users refusing to accept my cert. just how do I make it easy for them? IE you can just click the cert from a link, but that installs for IE, and not the plugin where it needs to be.

  • How do I fix my Java plugin?

    In my Firefox browser, I have two potentially vulnerable plugins: "Java Deployment Toolkit 7.0.400.43" and "Java Platform SE 7 U40." I uninstalled Java Platform (I believe it was 6.0), so I'm not sure why it is showing as a plugin. Anyway, in my attempt to uninstall the Java 7 Update, I get an error message that says "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable." I'm prompted to "Click Ok to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package "jre.1.7.0_21-c.msi" in the box below.
    It appears that a folder within my c drive is missing. I don't understand it as this is a file that I do not mess with. Apparently, it is the subfolders within the c drive; specifically, the appsdata subfolder was hidden! Even after I unhid it, I'm still missing the local subfolder which is where Java normally would go. Java is instead located on a local low subfolder, but I can't uninstall this because this path (Local low) is not recognized). Any help is much appreciated!!
    I am not a computer geek, so can you please provide the answer in as simple a manner as possible? Thank you in advance for your time and efforts.

    The first thing you should do is to '''uninstall''' older versions of Java. <br />
