Java programme to implement a simple parser

the following syntax shows how an arithmetic expression may be constructed in a simple language....
<expression> ::= <term> | <addop><term> | <expression><addop><term>
<term> ::= <primary> | <term> <multop> <primary>
<primary> ::= <digit> | <letter> | ( <expression> )
<digit> ::= 0 | 1 | 2 | ... | 9
<letter> ::= a | b | c | ... | y | z
<multop> ::= * | /
<addop> ::= + | -
i have been asked to write a Java program which determines whether a given character string is a legal expression according to the rules above. it should take in a string as input when it runs, for example,
a*b+(c-d)
The output from the program should be a single uppercase word:
TRUE - if the expression is legal FALSE - if it is not
You may assume the expression contains no spaces, and that all operands are single lower-case characters.
So far i have had some ideas but need a bit of help.
begin
if term(string) then TRUE;
OTHERWISE
if addop(first char of string) and term(rest of string) then TRUE; OTHERWISE
for each <addop> in the string
if expression(start of string up to addop) and term(string after addop)
          then TRUE;
OTHERWISE FALSE
end
Any help would be great, cheers

Here's a giveaway; it's a proper LL1 grammar that recognizes expressions:expression : term exprtail ;
exprtail : addop term exprtail | <empty> ;
term : factor termtail ;
termtail : mulop factor termtail | < empty> ;
factor : + factor | - factor | element ;
element : constant | identifier | ( expression ) ;
constant : 0 | 1 | 2 ... 9 ;
identifier : a | b | c ... z ;If you want to build your recursive parse by hand, all you have to do is
to translate every grammar rule to a Java method:Expression expression() {
   return exprtail(term());
Expression exprtail(Expression expr) {
   while (token().type == addop) {
      expr= buildExpression(token().token, expr, term());
      nextToken();
   return expr;
}etc. etc.
kind regards,
Jos

    Pls could sum1 help thanks

    Hi,
    I hope you got rid of this problem by now. I too faced the same problem today while using OracleWebRowSet.readXML. I could able to find a workaround for this problem i.e.
    I added the required parser information to System.Properties as below:
    Properties p = new Properties(System.getProperties());
    p.put("javax.xml.parsers.SAXParserFactory","org.apache.xerces.jaxp.SAXParserFactoryImpl");
    System.setProperties(p);
    and it worked for me.
    Basically what OracleWebRowSet's implementation for ReadXML method does is, it performs a look up for SAXParserFactory implementations within the System properties - it then looks for any DOM implementation defined in System.properties; if none of them is available then it raises the exception
    java.sql.SQLException: No valid JAXP parser property specified
    - I believe this should work for you too. Please let me know if you got rid of this in any other way.
    Thanks & Regards

  • Java programme design

    hi there!
    i've created a java programme and i want to do a class diagram. by making a design of the classes i realised that for example, a class is being called by 2 other classes and it calls 2 ither classes itself. is this normal or it means it's badly designed??
    thanks :)

    cause in most of the class diagrams i have seen (i guess i have only seen diagrams of relatively simple programs) classes don't call many classes and are not being called by many other classes. in case my english doesn't make sense, class diagrams i've seen are simpler so i thought this might be a software problem..
    is it normal classes calling a lot of other classes and being called by many other classes too??

  • How to do sorting/filtering on custom java data source implementation

    Hi,
    I have an entity driven view object whose data should be retrieved and populated using custom java data source implementation. I've done the same as said in document. I understand that Query mode should be the default one (i.e. database tables) and createRowFromResultSet will be called as many times as it needs based on the no. of data retrieved from service, provided we should write the logic for hasNextForCollection(). Implementation sample code is given below.
    protected void executeQueryForCollection(Object qc, Object[] params, int noUserParams) {
    Iterator datumItr = retrieveDataFromService(qc, params);
    setUserDataForCollection(qc, datumItr);
    hasNextForCollection(qc);
    super.executeQueryForCollection(qc, params, noUserParams);
    protected boolean hasNextForCollection(Object qc) {
    Iterator datumItr = (Iterator) getUserDataForCollection(qc);
    if (datumItr != null && datumItr.hasNext()){
    return true;
    setCallService(false);
    setFetchCompleteForCollection(qc, true);
    return false;
    protected ViewRowImpl createRowFromResultSet(Object qc, ResultSet resultSet) {
    Iterator datumItr = (Iterator) getUserDataForCollection(qc);
    Object datumObj = datumItr.next();
    ViewRowImpl r = createNewRowForCollection(qc);
    return r;
    Everything is working fine include table sorting/filtering. Then i noticed that everytime when user perform sorting/filtering, executeQueryForCollection is called, which in turn calls my service. It is a performance issue. I want to avoid. So i did some modification in the implementation in such a way that, service call will happen only if the callService flag is set to true, followed by executeQuery(). Code is given below.
    private boolean callService = false;
    public void setCallService(boolean callService){
    this.callService = callService;
    public boolean isCallService(){
    return callService;
    protected void executeQueryForCollection(Object qc, Object[] params, int noUserParams){
    if (callService)
    Iterator datumItr = retrieveDataFromService(qc, params);
    setUserDataForCollection(qc, datumItr);
    hasNextForCollection(qc);
    super.executeQueryForCollection(qc, params, noUserParams);
    Issue i have:
    When user attempts to use table sort/filter, since i skipped the service call and set null as userDataCollection, createRowFromResultSet is not called and data which i retrieved and populated to view object is totally got vanished!!. I've already retrived data and created row from result set. Why it should get vanished? Don't know why.
    Tried solution:
    I came to know that query mode should be set to Scan_Entity_Cache for filtering and Scan_View_Rows for sorting. I din't disturb the implementation (i.e. skipping service call) but overrided the executeQuery and did like the following code.
    @Override
    public void executeQuery(){
    setQueryMode(callService ? ViewObject.QUERY_MODE_SCAN_DATABASE_TABLES : ViewObject.QUERY_MODE_SCAN_ENTITY_ROWS);
    super.executeQuery();
    By doing this, i could able to do table filtering but when i try to use table sorting or programmatic sorting, sorting is not at all applied.
    I changed the code like beolw*
    @Override
    public void executeQuery(){
    setQueryMode(callService ? ViewObject.QUERY_MODE_SCAN_DATABASE_TABLES : ViewObject.QUERY_MODE_SCAN_VIEW_ROWS);
    super.executeQuery();
    Now sorting is working fine but filtering is not working in an expected way because Scan_View_rows will do further filtering of view rows.
    Question:
    I don't know how to achieve both filtering and sorting as well as skipping of service call too.
    Can anyone help on this?? Thanks in advance.

    On further test, If I let the default oracle xml parser be loaded, then I do not get the the exception.
    I have removed the following lines from orion-application.xml
         <imported-shared-libraries>
              <remove-inherited name="oracle.xml"/>

    Now, If I access the JPDK provider URL

    I get the excepted page
    Congratulations! You have successfully reached your Provider's Test Page.

    In that case you should already know the answer to your stated question...

  • Taking control back while calling stored procedure using java programme

    I have stored procedure to load data. This procedure is invoked by java program.
    The stored procedure take around 10 to 15 minutes to do complete loading of database. I want to write stored procedure when it starts loading of database at the same return the control to calling java programme so that java program can do other operation i.e. java program can not wait for control back from stored procedure.
    In short stored procedure runs in background and return control back to java program when stored procedure is invoked. Is it possible then How we can achieve this.

    U can acheive this using Java Threads. Create a thread submit this loading job. Once you submit the thread, you will get the control back to do other stuff.

  • What are the key points of a job nterview as a java programmer ?

    Hi,
    I would like to know what to expect from a job interview as an entry level java programmer ?
    Do you have recommendations ?
    Thank you in advance,
    Grazia

    Primarily, be honest. That is true only if you are going to be
    be interviewed by technical people. RH people don't
    care for honesty or how good you are. More than once
    I was asked in an interview:
    "Are you an Expert in java? You would say from 0%
    0% to 100% how much do you know java?"
    My usual answer is: "No. I have still a lot to
    to learn, java is a vast subject and its is very
    unlikely someone know it all, I have a good grasp of
    the sintax and of OO design but I would say I know
    just 5% to 10%". Then they make a "face" pass a
    crappy test that only deals with the simplest of the
    java concepts(usually it is clear the person who
    designed the test does not even grasp the basic), the
    last one took me 8min to answer and I leave knowing
    that one more time I did not got the job.
    As it is I never go any job if the RH is the
    he responsible for the hiring, I only get the job
    when I talk directly with technical people.
    May the code be with you.'RH'? You mean 'HR'?

  • How to implement a simple node-edge graph?

    Can any one give me some advice on how to implement a simple node-edge graph in a frame? Every node is a rectangle which can be moved by mouse, and every edge is a arc between two nodes.
    Should the node class extend JPanel, and the edge class extend Graphics? and so on?

    It is impossible to generate similar update from OWB.
    Does your table1 contain primary key columns? What is the number of rows in this table?
    The only working solution in this case - use table1 twice in mapping - as source and as target (with UPDATE operation),
    link these operators with primary key columns and specify matching by PK columns.
    Updated column link to Constant operator attribute.
    In this case OWB generate SQL like
    merge table1 a
    using table1 b
    on (a.pk_column=b.pk_column)
    when matched then update set column1=1

  • How to create trigger through Java programm?

    I write a Java programm to create a trigger(through JDBC connection). After I run the programm, a trigger was created in Oracle 10g.But the trigger is invalid. After Compiling the trigger , a error "PLS-00103 " occured .But if I excute the SQL in SQL developer,the trigger was created successfully.
    If there is some special considerations should be taken when using programm to create trigger?
    My Java programm fragment as follows:
         public void createTrigger() throws SQLException{
              Statement stmt = conn.createStatement();
              stmt.executeUpdate(getCreateTriggerSql());
    Edited by: jerry on 2010-6-29 下午6:42

    Yes the special consideration is you shouldn't perform DDL on the fly, as it has all kinds of unwanted side effects like implicit commits.
    If I would start a company, and I discover one of my developers is writing this kind of program, I would fire him, on the spot.

    Thanks1) Get a good java book and read it from start to finish. Understand and then use every technique demonstrated in the book before moving onto the next.
    2) Develop good programming practices in general. Use resources like Code Complete and software engineering books to improve the quality of your code and development practices. This is a typical programmer's bookshelf:
    [http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/images/my-programming-bookshelf-small.jpg|http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/images/my-programming-bookshelf-small.jpg]
    3) Learn new things, always. Start witing things in J2EE. Start writing things in Swing. Even pick up a new language. Different perspectives help you see things in different ways and let you think in new directions.
    4) Pay attention to detail. Strive to write the very best code you can every time. Think constantly about how you can do it better.
    5) Solicit feedback from peers, coworkers, and quality online communities. Ask them how you can do it better. Post code examples and trust your gut if you suspect that something could be done a better way.
    6) Accept that it won't happen overnight. The road to being a "good" programmer is a long one.
