Java, Safari and Mac OS X

Hello,
I have a mac machine with both Safari and Firefox on it.  I hit a web page that references an applet in a jar file.  I set up Java preferences to always show the console.  With Firefox, the minit I hit the page, the java console appears and I start seing the applet's output there.
With Safari, the page seems to idle (it shows the HTML ocntent) but there is not Java console, and no reaction when clicking buttons that invoke actioons against the applet.
I enabled Safari's developer windows (error log etc) and I just saw a few HTML warning about malformed <br/> tags. But these occur down the file, long after the object reference to the jar.
How do I go about diagnosing this problem?
Thanks.

  • No internet for safari and .mac, but works for iChat and 3rd party browsers

After confusing safari (switching links while loading) sometimes I loose the internet connection for .mac services and safari. Safari will not connect to the internet, iDisk will not load or show in network prefs, etc. However, network still shows an internet connection, iChat still connects, third party (FireFox) browsers connect, etc. I just can't use some Apple apps that need internet. Usually, this has eventually corrected itself after reboots, but this time I can't get it to fix itself.

Odd, found it. Somehow the "web proxy" box was getting selected (by itself! a default?), effectively stopping the connection. Why that also affected some Apple apps and not others and not third party? I've no idea.

  • Java WebStart and Mac OS X 10.8

I'm a bit afraid that Java WebStart applications are encountering a problem with the latest OS X release because of the Gatekeeper settings preventing Java WebStart applications from running. Is it really true that if an application is not signed with an apple developer id that it will no longer be allowed to start unless changes are made to the Gatekeeper settings?
    https://blogs.oracle.com/talkingjavadeployment/entry/java_applications_and_gatekeeper
    http://docs.oracle.com/javase/7/docs/technotes/guides/jweb/mac-faq.html#gatekeeper
If this is the case then of course my question would be how can I additionally sign my webstart application built with maven on windows with a free apple developer id?

doing a test app where you replace the .png with a .jpg might be a good idea. If you do not have a "test app", you probably should for JWS. It does not have to do much.

  • HT6074 Using Safari and Filenet P8

When I try to access the through safari and mac it shows blank screen but when using windows it works fine.

From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Advanced tab.
Select:  Show Develop menu in menu bar
You should now see Develop between Bookmarks and Window in the menu bar.
    Click Develop > User Agent
Select IE 10 then try accessing Filenet P8.
If that doesn't work, try Chrome.

  • Safari and Firefox crashing now on Facebook

my daughter's MacBook is now just crashing only on Facebook. tested youtube and other video heavy sites and all is well. crashes on Firefox ditto. She's has an intel based MB running Tiger 10.4.7

anyone help?..she uses it all the time

most facebook conflicts seem to be cleared up with updates to Safari and Mac OSX.
it appears that adobe and apple still don't get along and that updates are not coordinated leaving code conflicts until everyone catches up.
if u are still having problems search "plug-ins" on this forum and there are work arounds and simple commands in terminal that do the trick

  • Tiger cripples Safari and Mail for WiFi

I was at a Panera Bread store attempting to connect to their free WiFi access. While my airport showed a connection at full power and all airport diagnostics reported the airport connection to PANERA working fine, Safari and Mail would NOT WORK. Blank screens under Safari and Mail would not connect.
Under Panther, I had no trouble connecting to any Panera Bread WiFiÑno adjustments needed, the airport in my PowerBook just connected. But under Tiger, however, I was unable to view web pages within Safari or use Mac Mail.
After spending 20 frustrating minutes trying to get a web page to appear under Safari, I opened Internet Explorer for Mac 5.2 and much to my surprise, Panera Bread log-in web site appeared right away. Once I was on the Panera WiFi using IE for Mac 5.2, I was then able to use Safari and Mac Mail.
Can anyone explain to me why I had to use Microsoft Internet Explorer for Mac to gain access to Panera Bread's FREE WIFI site, while Safari would only display a blank page?
Can anyone explain to me why Mac Mail would not work with Panera Bread's FREE WIFI until after I had accessed the service using Microsoft's Internet Explorer for Mac?
Others have reported using FireFox to access the Panera Bread's free WiFi because Safari wouldn't display any web pages.
Under Panther, I didn't have this problem. With Tiger, it wouldn't work. Nothing!
Can anyone explain why this is happening? Or is this not considered a technical issue? It seems to be a big technical issue, especially when one needs to email critical business information and the closest WiFi to do so was not accessible under Apple software!!!!!!!!! Nope, doesn't sound technical to me.

I have a similar but not identical problem.
Everything had worked fine yesterday on my Powerbook G4 running Tiger with latest updates. Sice last night many applications (Safari, Software Update, .Mac, etc.) built into Tiger has lost internet connection through WIFI. The WIFI signal is full, provided by a D-Link wireless router. Firefox can connect to the Internet. Mail also works. But Safari, Software Update, and .Mac do not work.
The wireless router works fine for PC, and was fine with the Powerbook. It also works fine if I connect the Powerbook to it with a CAT5 cable.
I have restarted the router, cable modem, and the power book multiple times. I also renewed IP in the DHCP a few times. The problem persists. Can anyone provide any insights into the problem? Thank you in advance for your help.

  • Problem with Safari and Java

    Hi there,
I need help with the above mentioned problem. At first, here is my configuration:
iMac G5 17", Mac OS X 10.3.9, QuickTime 7.0.1 PRO, Safari 1.3 (v312), Java - here is the 'answer of the Terminal app - java version "1.4.2_05"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_05-141.4)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2-38, mixed mode).
My problem is, that on some sites (e.g. http://home.eduhi.at/member/gru/) I see those coffee cups with the red exclamation marks instead of some java media content.
On the site http://www.bodo.com/javame.htm I could verify that Safari is able to handle JavaScript, but in the line for Java Applets I again see this small coffee cup with red exclamation mark.
In the Safari preferences i have all Java check-boxes marked.
Please, can anyone help me, because I hate it to be forced to use this @&%§# IE from M$ all the time I want to go to sites with Java Applets.
    AndreasB

Well... good; when we help each other here, we can't
assume that any step has been taken, unless it's been
specifically identified. I'm sure that makes it all
the more frustrating, since you are a very experienced
    user.
    Now, then:
-- since you have reinstalled the Java Update; and
-- if you open your Help >> Installed Plug-ins, and
scroll down the list and find these three items:
    Java Plug-in for Cocoa -- Java 1.4.2 "JavaPluginCocoa.bundle"
Java Plug-in (CFM) -- Java 1.3.1 "Java Applet Plugin Enabler"
    Java Plug-in "Java Applet.plugin"
-- and if Enable Java and Enable JavaScript are checked in:
Safari >> Preferences >> Security, as you say they are; and
-- if Enable Plug-ins is checked in the same section,
as you say it is; and
-- you have repaired permissions, as you say you have; and
-- you have emptied your Cache; and
-- your Icons folder ({YOU}/Library/Safari/Icons) has been
trashed if it is over 750 KB; and
-- you have Quit, then relaunched Safari after all this,
as you say you have; and
    -- your {YOU}/Library/Caches and {YOU}/Library/Caches/Safari
folders have read and write permissions
...then, I'm currently at a loss as to what else to suggest.

My wife has been having problems with Safari, and many third party software and malware programs infecting her Mac Book Pro. I have tried to reset Safari but it keeps coming back, taking over Safari, changing defaults, start pages, and search engines, Etc.
Is it safe to use programs like MacKeeper, who keeps send my wife's computer message and alerts, or should I just wipe the drive and start over?

Just read "Best of Macworld" article "How to disable Java on your Mac," in email dated 2/25/13. I'm a dinosaur running OS 10.4.11 and Java 1.5.0_19, which is earlier than the versions addressed in the article. Do I remove/isolate in the same manner? Will the effects of removal/isolation the same as described in the article?

Hello, if you're talking about disabling Java in say Safari...
Safari>Preferences>Security>uncheck/Disable Java in your Browser settings, not JavaScript.

  • Java and Mac OS X

    Hello,
I have some problems in here while developing in Java using Netbeans 8 with JDK 8.5.
It happens that sometimes I face some weird behavior from Java, for example, I have a small window with a button when pressed call two more windows with 500x500 bounds, and the problem is that after few changes in the code these windows are not appearign correctly, they're totally without any bounds and the X and Y position in the screen are also wrong, appearing in the very corner of the left side of my screen. I am sure I did not touch the code from these.
I know Apple is trying to get rid of Java, so I wonder if it has something about it.
    Thank you.

I have found Mac OS X to be very Java friendly for several reasons...
Out of the box, OS X has at a minimum version 1.3 of the JRE installed in addition to command line tools like javac, java, jar. Panther, 10.3, has 1.4 installed out of box. The JDK/JRE for the Mac is available via the Software Updates capability directly from Apple. That is, you obtain JRE upgrades in the same manner in which you obtain updates on the OS itself. And it's simple and painless to do.
I've used JEdit and BBEdit and also XCode. It sounds like XCode is available via download (good to know..). I installed the Xcode tools from a CD that came with the box CD set for my Panther (10.3) OS. With the Developer tools, I can use a program called Jar Bundler to create "*.app" files for my Java applications so that they run with a native look and feel on OS X - (I mean having an icon in the dock for the Java app, and the icon bounces up and down like the others when the app executes etc). This makes deployment easy. To the best of my knowledge, that kind of convenience does not exist on Windows. For windows OS I think it is necessary to obtain install and configure a separate third party application which creates the "exe" file for the java application.
All Browsers on Mac OS X are set up to use the JRE on the system. The drawback is that only Safari right now is capable of using version 1.4 of the JRE. All other browsers, Mozilla, IE 5.2, OmniWeb, etc will use version 1.3. The good news is that configuring for the plugin is done behind the scenes, automatically. No messing with Tools menu or creating symbolic links are necessary in order to have the browser find the jre.

  • Java and Mac

    Hi,
Essentially, I'm going to study programming as one of my university modules and I need to download Java SE Development Kit 6u23. Unfortunately, I cant find the platform for Mac.
After some research, I heard that Xcode would be the same as Java SE Development Kit 6u23. Is it true? If it is true, all I need to do is to install Xcode from the installation disks which come with my mac OR I can download it from apple.developer.com, right?
    Thanks!
    Cheers.

    Hi sptrakesh,
Yes, I have /Library/Java/Home under my bootable drive.
Anyway, the JDK from the developer.apple.com is almost 10GB which consisted of IDE for Mac, Safari and iOS! I've installed "Developer" from my SL disks which is only 3.5GB. Phew..
    Thanks again.

  • Safari 3.1. and Mac OSX 10.5.3

    Hi everybody,
I accidentaly dumped Safari from my system because I never used it and I didn't like it very much. anyway, I am using Opera but to set Opera as my default Browser I need Safari to change this setting. So I downloaded the new 3.1. Safari version but wasn't able to install it. I got the message that I need Mac OSX 10.2. or newer (wich I already have). So I tried to install the Tiger version as well (out of curiosity) but it didn't work either. Afterwards I was browsing through the threads in this forum and tried all the other suggestions I found, like:
Installing the Safari 2.1. version from the install disk that came with my PBP. I was able to install it but when I tried to launch it I got the message that I cannot use this safari version with my Mac OSX version. And Software Update doesn't mention any Updates for Safari although an older version is installed.
After that I downloaded Pacifist, repaired my permissions with disk utillity, re-downloaded the Safari 3.1 package and tried to install it via Pacifist. The .pkg file was a zero-byte file and whe I marked every file in the package, and clicked on the install button it seemed to work. I was asked for my admin password and wether I want to replace all the files connected to safari. I said yes (like mentioned in another thread in this forum). I quit Pacifist, logged out and in again but Safari is still missing. If I search for safari using spotlight, the only thing that shows up is the .dmg file.
Does anyone have further suggestions??? I'd really appreciate it.
I am really annoyed about all that and I don't understand how Apple can release a new version of their browser wich is incompatible with their new MAC OSX version...

    Try this:
Go to /Library/Receipts and look for an item named Safari311Upd.pkg or something similar, and Trash it (don't empty the Trash yet).
Decompress the Safari 311.dmg file by double-clicking on it. When it's done, open the mounted disk image (if it doesn't open automatically) and drag the pkg file to your Desktop. When it's done copying, close the mounted disk image.
Launch Pacifist and open that package that's on your desktop. Click once on the top package icon in the Pacifist window and then choose Install from the menu, and be sure to replace all items related to Safari that it may find. When it's done, try launching Safari and post back with what happens. If everything is fine again, then you can Empty your Trash.
As for Apple releasing a version of Safari that's not compatible with 10.5.3, that's not the case at all. It is entirely compatible; the fact that the OS is claiming something that doesn't make sense to you is not an indication that it doesn't work or isn't compatible.

  • HT5367 How can I tell if I have 64 bit Java installed on my mac? I have something like Minecraft on it and I want to install 64 bit java on my mac. PLEASE HELP! Thanks!

I just need a bit help on how to install 64 bit java, i searched on youtube for it but it came up with many that I don't know much about. Please recommend a video you guys trust or know about. thanks

You can use 3rd party software such as Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! to create a bootable clone on an external drive.
I use SuperDuper to create a clone. Yes, it's true the Recovery HD will need to be recreated after restoring a clone because neither of these softwares nor Time Machine backup that partition. It's really no big deal. You just reinstall Lion on top of itself after the restore and reapply any Software Updates including the 10.7.1 update. I've done this a few times with no issues.
The Lion Recovery Assistant app creates an external Recovery HD on like a USB thumb drive, but it creates this using the Recovery HD from your Lion install. If the Recovery HD is missing, the app will not create one for you.
    EDITED:
Create your bootable clone on an external drive.
Create an external USB thumb drive with the Recovery HD using the Lion Recovery Assistant.
    Swap out hard drives.
Boot from the USB Recovery HD thumb drive.
Use Disk Utilities to create a new partition (Macintosh HD), format it with the GUID partition table and Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
While in Disk Utilities, click your hard drive (not the new partition); then click the Restore button.
The Source of your restore is the external clone you created. The Destination is the newly created Macintosh HD partition.
Click the Restore button. The restore will take awhile depending on the size of the clone.
After the restore, boot your system and it should boot into Lion.
Reinstall Lion on top of itself to recreate the Recovery HD at the end of your Lion partition.
Reapply Software Updates including the 10.7.1 update (if you want it).
    Hope this helps!
