Java Swing, Displaying Images in Labels

Im rather new to java programming. Im finding it difficult to display images, as they never seem to appear when they should. When I downloaded the examples in the java tutorial (but not the picture files), changed the picture files to picture files I have in my computer, it also didn't display any pictures. My guess is that this is something to do with what the java tutorial said:
"Generally, applications provide their own set of images used as part of the application, as is the case with the images used by many of our demos", and says that the createImageIcon() method should only be used when the images are part of the application. Could anyone explain to me how to make the set of images part of the application?
When I tried using the new ImageIcon("") method also no picture appeared. Could anyone explain this to me as well?
Sorry for bothering you all with such a probably trivial matter. Thank you :)

It should, as far as I understand what you are describing. You have the bin directory, where you type "java <classname>" to start your app, and if the images are in that directory, all you should need is the filename. But generally, the image filename you use should be an absolute file path, or a path relative to the directory the application starts in.
There are other ways, however, which might be more useful for applications, notably loaded as resource...
new ImageIcon(getClass().getResource("xyz.gif"));
Where xyz.gif is in an directory or Jar file in the classpath.

  • Displaying image from binary data using java

    hi there,
    i have created a swing applet displays me a url, what the url returns me is the image in binary format, and i want to show the complete image using that binary data
    so how do i do it.
    some thing like this :
    URL url = new URL("http://192.168.1.1:8086/file-storage/download/Zerg.jpg?version_id=35688");
    JEditorPane jep = new JEditorPane();
    jep.setPage(url);
    output is in binary on my applet window.

    Hey,
    This displays an image from a url, you could check if your url is and image or not using URL.getFileName() and see if it ends in gif jpeg etc. and then display it this way.
    hope it helps

  • Unicode characters with accents won't display in Java Swing applications

    I'm using FreeMind (a Java Swing application) and I need to enter classical Greek characters with accent marks. When I type an accented Greek character, FreeMind displays the unaccented character. However, I can type the accented character in MS Word, then copy and paste into FreeMind, the accented character appears.
    One of the FreeMind developers indicated this was a Java Swing issue, not FreeMind, and suggested I test with another Swing application. So, I installed jEdit and got exactly the same results. I can paste an accented character into jEdit, but I cannot type it in directly.
    I'm using Windows Vista with Java 6 Update 22 (build 1.6.0_22-b04). I also tested on a XP Pro box with Java 1.6.0_18-b07 and got the same result.
    One other note: A couple days ago, I was able to type accented Greek characters into FreeMind. But it only worked for a couple days and then the behavior reverted to unaccented characters. It is possible, but I don't recall specifically, that I updated Java during the time and that may indicate a bug in one version of Java but not another.
    Any assistance or guidance would be greatly appreciated!
    Darin

    Walter,
    The link you provided does not appear to describe the Greek Polytonic keyboard. (The page also describes using the "Option" key as the dead key. There is no "Option" key on my keyboard. I'm using a Sony VGN-NS140E purchased in Chicago, i.e. standard physical US keyboard.)
    Please see http://darindavis.net/languages/keyboard_Greek.pdf for a detailed description of how to use the Greek (Polytonic) keyboard in Windows to produce a complete set of accented classical Greek characters. This method works in MS Word and Notepad. I enabled the Greek (Polytonic) keyboard with:
    Windows (Vista) Start > Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Change Keyboards > General > Add > Greek (Greece) > Greek Polytonic
    A test that will demonstrate whether you can replicate the error is to do the following in both MS Word (or Notepad) and jEdit (or FreeMind):
    1. Enable the Greek Polytonic keyboard
    2. Type "\" then "e" which should produce an epsilon with smooth breathing and grave accent (ἒ)
    When I do this in MS Word or Notepad, I see the epsilon with smooth breathing and grave accent. When I do this in jEdit and FreeMind, I only see an epsilon.
    I recorded a screencast to illustrate the problem: http://www.screencast.com/t/TRKkKQrCgbN
    Actually, this problem is transient. Sometimes FreeMind or jEdit will display accented characters, other times it won't. Ironically, the first time I recorded the above referenced screencast, a few characters in jEdit did appear with accents. A couple minutes later, I re-recorded the screencast and as you can see jEdit did not display the accents. Between the two recordings I literally did nothing other than stop the Jing recording and start a new one. There is another variable at play here and I can't determine what it is. The most likely source seems to be Java since MS Word and Notepad consistently display accent characters.
    Thanks,
    Darin

  • Help with displaying images (gif, jpeg...) within a JFrame (or similar)

    Hi all,
    i'm new to the forum and i'll be granted if you kind gentlemen/women could use some advices for my gui home application.
    My purpose is to display a static image in a container (i'd prefer to use javax.swing objects, but if you think that java.awt is more suitable for my app, please feel free to tell me about...). I used a modified code from one of the Java Tutorial's examples, tht actually is an applet and displays images as it is using the paint() method. I just can't realize how to set the GraphicContext in a JFrame or a JPanel to contain the image to display, without using applets. Following part of the code I use (a JButton will fire JApplet start, JApplet is another class file called Apple.java):

    Read the Swing tutorial on "How to Use Labels" or "How to Use Icons" for working examples:
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/TOC.html
    By the way you should never override the paint() method. Custom painting (not required in this case) is done by overriding the paintComponent(...) method in Swing. Overriding paint() is an old AWT trick.

    Anyone that can help me figure out how to implement this in an MVC layout, I feel stuck.
    I post a little program that open and display an image file so that you better can understand what I whant to do.

  • FirstGUI.java:7: Package java.swing not found in import.

    Hi,
    I am currently taking JAVA at UGA and am trying to learn the GUI part on my own, since our professor is not going to cover this. This is the first error I get when I compile the program. Any help is greatly appreciated...
    Thanks,

  • Won't display images - Its probably something simple!

    Hey ,
    Ive been trying for ages, looked throught the tutorials (i have even tried just using java pasted from the site for one of the simple programs) and looking through old forum questions but can't find out why my GUI wont display images. It compiles fine but then when i run the program ... no pics!
    I suspect its something to do with the directory, i have tired:
    - putting the images in the same directory as the java classes,
    - putting in the entire image location paths (for this i get illegal characters error because it has '\' in the path but i get round this using '\\' ) but still no joy.
    Like i said am just using the example programme from the site so i know its correct, Any ideas??
    Thanx
    Lisa

    Here is a simple program to test:
    JFrame frame = new JFrame();
    JLabel label = new JLabel("image.jpg");
    frame.getContenPane()..add( label );
    frame.pack();
    frame.setVisible(true);a) Place "image.jpg" is the same directory as the source and class files.
    b) Don't use any package names for you class.
    c) Compile using javac, not through and ide or anything.
    d) Make sure your classpath includes ".", so it will search the current directory.

  • Chess: java swing help need

    Hi, I have just learn java swing and now creating a chess game. I have sucessfully create a board and able to display chess pieces on the board. By using JLayeredPane, I am able to use drag and drop for the piece. However, there is a problem which is that I can drop the chess piece off the board and the piece would disappear. I have try to solve this problem by trying to find the location that the chess piece is on, store it somewhere and check if the chess piece have been drop off bound. However, I could not manage to solve it. Also, I am very confuse with all these layer thing.
    Any suggestion would be very helpful. Thanks in advance

    so much wrong with this post...
    a) use the code tags to format the code. Now it is an unreadable mess
    b) scriptlets in your JSP. I don't even want to look at that mess. Learn how to combine servlets and JSPs to create clean, readable and maintainable code in which view logic and business logic are separated. The rule: no java code in your JSP, only tags and EL expressions (learn about JSTL).
    So you get a blank screen. When you do "view source" in your browser, do you see anything there? If nothing, check if you are behind a proxy server. The solution to a post of not too long ago was that the blank screen was being caused by faulty proxy server settings (the user figured it out himself, I don't know what was done to solve it).
    If all this fails you will have to do some debugging magic using your favorite IDE. It will probably be something stupid you are overlooking in the code. It is annoying, but debugging code that does not work is a big part of your job. Better get good at it.
