What are the security implications of having JAVA running on my Mac Book Pro?
What are the security implications of having JAVA running on my Mac Book Pro?
Java on the Web (not to be confused with JavaScript, to which it's not related, despite the similarity of the names) is a weak point in the security of any system. Java is, among other things, a platform for running complex applications in a web page, on the client. That was always a bad idea, and Java's developers have proven themselves incapable of implementing it without also creating a portal for malware to enter. Past Java exploits are the closest thing there has ever been to a Windows-style virus affecting OS X. Merely loading a page with malicious Java content could be harmful.
Fortunately, client-side Java on the Web is obsolete and mostly extinct. Only a few outmoded sites still use it. Try to hasten the process of extinction by avoiding those sites, if you have a choice. Forget about playing games or other non-essential uses of Java.
Java is not included in OS X 10.7 and later. Discrete Java installers are distributed by Apple and by Oracle (the developer of Java.) Don't use either one unless you need it. Most people don't. If Java is installed, disable it — not JavaScript — in your browsers.
Regardless of version, experience has shown that Java on the Web can't be trusted. If you must use a Java applet for a task on a specific site, enable Java only for that site in Safari. Never enable Java for a public website that carries third-party advertising. Use it only on well-known, login-protected, secure websites without ads. In Safari 6 or later, you'll see a lock icon in the address bar with the abbreviation "https" when visiting a secure site. -
Java update 1 for MAC OS 10.6 caused problems
Hello,
Today I installed the new java update 1 for Mac OS 10.6 and my eclipse is no longer working.
Actually, the eclipse itself is starting up okay, the problem is when I try to startup jboss AS to start working I get the following error:
ERROR: This jdwp native library will not work with this VM's version of JVMTI (1.0.36), it needs JVMTI 1.1[.102].
This happened right after I installed the update.
To make things more complicated, my workspace in eclipse is set to compile/deploy with a JDK 5 installation I have. Since the update was supposed to only affect the JDK 6 that comes with Snow Leopard, and I'm not using it to run JBoss AS in eclipse, in theory there shouldn't be any problem.
The eclipse itself is running on JDK 6, however.
Anyone have a clue? Unfortunately I'm not using time machine and cannot revert the update.I updated my Snow Leopard on Friday 4th, and since that moment i can't run MyEclipse 7.5, and i get this message:

Can anyone tell me if there will be such an update soon, and possible when we can expect this?
Thanks!Yes, it's Java update 16 for Mac OS 10.6 that broke lots of stuff. The 51 comes from it updating Java to 1.6_51. There is an update to the update for 10.7 and up posted, but is there one for 10.6?
UPDATE: Never mind. If you go to the download page for Java update 16, it appears that it has been silently updated. Although there isn't any indication of the fact that it has been fixed, the build number is different (20.51-b01-457 instead of -456). -
Java vs Javascript NOT THE SAME THING
Since we're all just users here it might be appropriate to remind people that Java and Javascript are two distinctly different things. With the recent warnings about Java some might be inclined to also disable Javascript in their browsers. There is no need to do that.
Even thought the two frameworks have similar names they are not related.drcouzelis wrote:

Which aspect of Unix / Linux do you want to understand better?
Options include:
Networking
Servers
System administration (user accounts, permissions)
Software development
Package management
Differences between distributions / operating systems
Kernel compiling
The Linux Standard Base (LSB)
Shared libraries
Version control software
Embedded linux
The init process, boot manager, and dual booting
File systems
And other stuff.
I was thinking a basic mix of everthing above, basically. Like: What are libraries? How does the system administration work? How does the kernel work? Etc. I mean - the answers are often not so complicated to understand on a basic level. My problem is, I don't know what questions to ask.
I think I'm looking for some "tasks" which don't require a lot of time, I don't really HAVE the need to do extremely much on my Arch - but I would love to be ABLE to do more.
bohoomil wrote:Well, I believe you mean 'using a particular Linux distribution' in the first place.
Yes, you are right - that is what I meant.
General response: Thanks to all of you so far. I'm starting to understand what I should do, just hoping I'm on the right track now. -
I want to run a streaming quotes program on Scottrade. They tell me that their product does not work if I have more than one Java application on my Mac. How do I delete the older versions? Thanks
I have the same problem, they never told me that, just that the newest version of Java "locks" up streaming quotes.

I’ve tried to login to the XMF for my company to send artwork to a printer on both Chrome Version 34.0.1847.116, Safari Version 7.0.3 (9537.75.14) and Firefox 27.0. I think I have the most recent version of Java installed but I can't find out which version it is. The web application XMF is telling me that it doesn't support Java updates over 51.
I can’t seem to delete Java from my machine, I’m running a Mac with Mac OS 10.9 (mavericks), I’ve enabled the root user and done a search for the ‘JavaAppletPlugin.plugin’, but this didn’t result in anything, I don’t feel experienced enough to mess with Terminal. Can anyone help. Ultimately I want to install Java update 51 for mac os x I think 64 bit.

Error using java and javascript
I have a jsp page that links to a bean and is working fine (getting data from the database).
On a html form I have a button with a picture that fires off javascript when clicked:
<BUTTON TYPE=reset onclick=showinfo('<%=index%>')>
<IMG SRC="http://localhost:8080/Portal/Images/q2.bmp" ALT="Info">
</BUTTON>
The javascript function just opens a new window and displays the text sent in:
<Script Language=JavaScript>
function showinfo(arrayindex)
InfoWin=window.open("","InfoWin","width=345,height=220");
InfoWin.document.write(arrayindex);
return false;
</Script>
Well in the above example index is a number (pulled from the database using a java bean and javascript converts it into a string then the function displays it correctly. If I replace <%=index%> with regular text it works fine as well(because java isn't used to pull data)! The problem occurs when I retrieve text data from the database and send it to the function. The web page gives errors about a nonterminating string. But I can move the code to somewhere else on the form(as long as I don't send it to java script) and it will print the text to the screen. I can also view the source of the web page and the html shows the text from the data base as if I hard coded the text into the javascript!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This must be a bug between java and javascript!
-can pass numbers(from a database) between the two
-can't pass text (from a database)between the two
Any info would help!Found the problem myself!
I am using an odbc connection to msaccess and the spaces in the text was messing things up!
After taking out the spaces it worked again. -
What's the difference between java and Javascript?
I a new programer, I am getting Java down. Now I want to add some java scripts to my site. Is there any difference between java and Javascript? Can I use the Java API site refference and classes? Thanks..
Java is a programming language, Javascript is more for web pages. It is used to add interactivity to your web pages. 2 different languages.
check out www.java.sun.com for Sun Java stuff.

Borland compiler
/*mymac.c*/
#include <jni.h>
#include "mac.h"
#include <stdio.h>
JNIEXPORT void JNICALL
Java_mac_getMac(JNIEnv *env, jobject obj)
printf("I am in getmac dir in mymac.dll (Borland) \n");
return;
JNIEXPORT jstring JNICALL
Java_mac_getLine(JNIEnv *env, jobject obj, jstring enter)
char buf[128];
const char *str = (*env)->GetStringUTFChars(env, enter, 0);
printf("%s", str);
(*env)->ReleaseStringUTFChars(env, enter, str);
scanf("%s", buf);
return (*env)->NewStringUTF(env, buf);
}To generate DLL
create bcc32.cfg file in %BORLAND_INSTALL%/BCC5/bin Folder
In the bcc32.cfg file add following code
-I"%BORLAND_INSTALL%\BCC55\include;%JAVA_HOME%\include;%JAVA_HOME%\include\win32"
-L"%BORLAND_INSTALL%\BCC55\lib;%BORLAND_INSTALL%\BCC55\Lib\PSDK;"
i.e the path for borland compiler and java.
now goto prompt and say
prompt>bcc32 -tWM -tWD mymac.c
This will create mymac.lib File
Now say
prompt>implib -c mymac.lib mymac.dll
That's it!!
there you are with dll
Now you can run the mac.class file by using java
VC++
Click File->New->Win32Dynamic-Link Library
Give name and Select
A simple DLL project
You will have
myMac.CPP file
// myMac.cpp : Defines the entry point for the DLL application.
#include "stdafx.h"
#include "mac.h"
#include "jni.h" //can copy or give full path
#include <math.h>
BOOL APIENTRY DllMain( HANDLE hModule,
DWORD ul_reason_for_call,
LPVOID lpReserved
return TRUE;
JNIEXPORT void JNICALL
Java_mac_getMac(JNIEnv *env, jobject obj)
printf("You are in getMac (VC++) DLL\n");
JNIEXPORT jstring JNICALL
Java_mac_getLine(JNIEnv *env, jobject obj, jstring enter)
char buf[128];
const char *str = env->GetStringUTFChars(enter, 0);
printf("\n%s", str);
env->ReleaseStringUTFChars(enter, str);
scanf("%s", buf);
return env->NewStringUTF(buf);
}Hope this is useful

Wanting to send SMS text from a mobile phone to a webpage, the wepage has a scrollbar that will change everytime an SMS text message is sent. Is this going to be Java or Javascript to allow this to work ?.
Cheers.Wanting to send SMS text from a mobile phone to a
webpage, the wepage has a scrollbar that will change
everytime an SMS text message is sent. Is this going
to be Java or Javascript to allow this to work ?.
Cheers.It would be a wap page for the mobile phone. You could use a jsp for that. A controller would get the info from the jsp and send it to some code using Noctor API(www.noctor.com) or something similar. Using this API you would opene an SMPP connection to an SMSc and send the message to it.
I would suggets you try to understand the SMPP API a little bit and gothrougn one of the APIs which supports the protocol. -
Disable Javascript on Mac 10.6.8
I read that the solution to disable Javascript in mac is to go to preferences / content / disable Javascript checkbox BUT there is not checkbox for disable Javascript there... I have a mac 10.6.8 What can I do? Thanx
Thank you for the reply, yes, I think I maybe made a mistake and downloaded a similar program (?) ... the logo is an "S" inside a round shape. It seams that Javascript has a different logo. The problem is that appeared a yellow stripe on the bottom of the firefox window and I have to allow new pages very often now.. I don't need it and I can't find a way to delete it. There is nothing similar in the applications file and I'm not an expert..

Hi
i am getting alert messages to be displayed in the GUI from the properties file.
can anyone tell me how can i use java inside javascript..?
so that i can use ResourceBundle file in javascript.
Regards
SoniaDo you know how to retrieve the text you want from the properties file? If so then all you have to do is add:
<script type="text/javascript">
alert('<%=variablename%>');
</script>
to your page, where you replace variablename with the name of the String you want alerted.
If you don't know how to retrieve what you need from the properties file, maybe you should ask that question. -
Cannot open any Java files on my Mac OSX: Problem Solved
Hello all,
I have just begun an Introduction to Java class and I'm already having problems...namely, I cannot open .java files on my Mac.
Whenever I try to open them, I get an error message that says: "You cannot use this version of the application Xcode with this version of Mac OS X."
I'm running version 10.5.4 on a PowerPC Mac. It's a few years old, but I don't understand how it could already be so outdated as to not allow me to even use the application.
I am 100% new to programming and don't really know at all what I'm doing. Apple says their JDK comes with every Mac and no one else seems to be having this problem. I don't really even know where to go to for updates, if that is what I need to do, or if I should just download a different JDK.
This is an intensive (6-week) class and I don't want to fall behind, but it's halfway through the first week and I cannot even open files.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
EDIT: I figured out the problem by getting out my installation disks and I found the latest xCode tools app in the "optional packages" folder.
Installed it and now I'm up and running.
Edited by: chalks on Sep 17, 2008 10:09 AMYou can download Adobe Reader from adobe.com. The Mac OSX uses its "reader" to open PDF files without the Adobe Reader. If you downloader adobe reader, it should open all PDF files. Hope this helps.

Anton KruseHi,

The "domain" parameter is used to set the domain the cookie is accessable to. A path can be set for your own domain only and the domain path must include at least two periods (.domain.com). It must match your server's domain name. Therefore cookies are not a security risk since only the server that sets them can use them.
