Java Update question

Is it advisable and possible to update java or should we just let Apple update it when they deem necessary via the system software update?
I have a universal game that fails misserably and suspect it may be a java issue. All my otrher games and Apps do function perfectly. Thanks!

If the Java update doesn't appear through Software Update, I probably would not update it. Make sure if you do install a Java update it is Universal, and not stating it is for PowerPC Macs.
You might find someone who can better help you in the Intel Mac forum that refers to your Mac. Also check with the game developer if they are aware of any specific Java issues.

  • Another Java Update Question.

    Hello-
I am seeing posts here where people want to disable the current Java for Mac OS X 10.6.update 8. One post said Safari crashes everytime he opens it now that he installed this update.
I am using Safari, "Enable Java" has been checked since I prchased this MBP 3 years ago.
My knowledge is not the best in this area, so I come here to get some help-
I am wondering how one knows if they should install the new Update for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 8?  It says, "If you do not use Java applets, you should disable the Java web plug-in your web browser," which is Safari for me.
Any suggestions?  I have been having so much trouble with my MBP the last 6 months, all I need is something else to conflict and cause more troubles.  A trip to the Genius Bar is needed.
    TXS!

You should install the update that appeared in Software Update today (April 12). The previous one was released on April 3.
Here is the direct link: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1516
And, to prevent future occurrences of the Java exploit, you should un-check Java in Safari Preferences > Security. Make yours look like this:

  • HT5675 I have a question about OS x 2013-002 1.0 the Java update the showed up recently

If I have installed Oracles Version 7 Update 17 (build 1.7.0_17-b02) I think I should skip this update. I am seeking confirmation on that decision and if it is correct how do I tell App Store to stop asking me to install it?
Bellow is the Apple details on the update they are reccomending:
    HT5675: About Java for OS X 2013-002
Learn about About Java for OS X 2013-002

I updated two iMacs this morning with both the Apple OSX Java update and the Java update (17) this morning. On my older iMac (2007) all is working fine.  On my newer iMac (2011) all works fine for awhile, but then I start getting probelms.  Programs like Address Book, iTunes, and iCal won't open from the dock, and Safari won't load web pages. Need to use force quit to get out of them.  After a restart, all is back to normal again for awhile. Both computers are running Lion 10.7.  Everything was working fine on both computers prior to the Java updates, so I'm wondering what my one computer doesn't like about the latest updates.

  • Some pages don't render properly after Java update for OSX 10.6.8

I can't seem to get T-mobile.com's website pages to render properly anymore. So far, this is the only website I'm having this issue with, though there could be more I'm not aware of.
I go to www.t-mobile.com and this is what I get:
I think I might be missing a plug-in, but not sure; if so, I don't know which one or how to get it.
This only started happening after the latest Java update for OSX 10.6.8, which I installed on Feb. 24, 2013. All of T-mobile's pages look like this, except if I go to www.my.t-mobile.com's home page. Then I get a normal page, but after I log in, I get more wierd rendering issues again. So here's the page that appeared normal today:
And after I log in successfully, I'm back to the wierd rendering issues again:
I was so lost but then I decided to try a work around to get my online bill and managed to get it, but I don't want to see the pages like this. So help please?

So, here's more on my point...
I put in the 3 captured screen shots in my original post above. I used Grab to copy the web pages, saved them to my desktop as .tiff files and dropped them in for others to view. This morning, I went to look at my post and instead of seeing the screen shots, I see 3 tiny blue boxes with question marks. When I left click on the boxes, nothing happens. When I right click on them, I get options that are not helpful:
    Open Image in New Window
    Open Image in New Tab
    Copy Image Address
    Import Image
    Capture Selection from Screen
Convert Selected Traditional Chinese Text (why the frack is this an option?)
Convert Selected Simplified Chinese Text (or this an option?)
I checked my Safari Preferences and I see I have checked, under Security, Enable plug-ins, Enable Java, Enable JavaScript.I have to have Java enabled to run a few things.
Did something get corrupted in Safari?
    Am I'm missing some plug-ins?
How do I get them back?
I'm going to search the internet. Well, after doing the search, I still don't think I've got what I need. Thinking I might need to reinstall Safari. If this is the case, will I loose all my Bookmarks?

  • Java update 6 causing constant permission errors

    Hi Folks
I was looking for a little more experienced thoughts about the numerous persistent permission errors caused by the last java update for apple's software update. I've read forum articles that says it's OK to ignore them. And the Apple Support KB page that list the dozens of errors that can be safely ignored. But it just doesn't feel right. I'm tempted to revert to a pre java update backup version of the OS, that repair permissions gave a clean bill of health to it's screen. My question is; By not updating java Do I have more risk than by running with all the constant errors caused this update in file permissions? In trying to learn more about java I found among other things these snippets from Boutell.Com
However, most people do not have Java applications on their computers these days, and most websites useFlash instead of Java for the interactive features that used to be commonly written in Java.
    Removing Java on MacOS X
Removing Java on MacOS X is not recommended as Apple has made Java a standard part of the operating system and may rely on it to a greater degree than a typical Windows system.
    What you should NOT do
Either update Java, or remove it. Do not refuse the updates. That gives you the worst of all possible worlds: a buggy old version of Java that might be exploited by
    maliciously coded web pages.
Just  wondering what others thought about this. And just how useful is java these days?  Is it true Java has been dropped from OS 10.7? Hopefully, Flash is on the way out too.
    Well thanks for considering this.

I don't see those errors, but Disk Utility cannot fix anything related to symbolic links, so all I can recommend is to ignore them. Your other option is to reinstall the OS and then run Software Update, after making a bootable backup/clone.

  • Java Update - After deployed install and settings

    Hi there,
In our managed Windows 2000 environment with Windows XP Pro clienst (SP2) we use Active directory to deploy software packages.
We are currently trying to install J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5, which works perfectly. We have made a transform file for giving answers to the MSI file of the Runtime Environment.
In the tranform file we have specified as wel that "Java Update" will be disabled after installation. This works well, too. After deploying the package, however, we notice that when a user logs on onto the workstation, a message is diplayed on screen, asking the user whether or not he want to re-enable the Java Update mechanism.
Is there a way (e.g. by a registry key, or another MST adaptation) to prevent this message?
Another question: is it possible to set the "Temporary Files", "Jar compression" level and several security settings like "Warn if certificate authority can not be verified" via registry keys or within a transform file?
Any help would be kindly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Sander.

I don't know what happened, but AFAICT, you did the job wrongly. I suggest redoing it this way (TM help files) and not worrying about fixing the mucked up system:
+*To revert to a previous version of Mac OS X:*+
+1. Insert the Mac OS X installation disc in your computer’s optical drive (or an optical drive connected to your computer).+
    +2. Double-click on Install Mac OS X+
+3. When the Language Chooser appears, select your language, and then click the Continue button (looks like an arrow).+
    +4. Choose Utilities->Restore System From Backup.+
+5. In the Restore Your System dialog, click Continue.+
+6. Select your Time Machine backup disk.+
+7. Select the Time Machine backup you want to restore. To restore your computer to the state it was in before you erased it, choose the most recent backup.+
    +8. Follow the onscreen instructions.+
Alternatively, if the SuperDuper! backup was a bootable one of your previous installation, restore it. That's better and faster than mucking with the TM restoration procedure above.

  • Latest Feb 19, 2013 Java update for 10.6 breaks Safari 5.1.7

Hi people, long time viewer first time poster here. I wasn't sure on how to contact apple in regards to their latest Java update on the 19th February 2013, so I thought I post it here and see if others have the same problem.
    So, I'm running the following:
    Java SE 6 (Java 1.6.0_41-b02-445)
    Safari 5.1.7
    Mac OSX 10.6.8
When I try to load http://www.uk.msn.com (which is also my homepage) my browser freezes and I can't load any other page. This results in me have to quit Safari and sometimes force quit.
I know it is the recent Java update because when I disable Javascript the website works fine and I can interact with it. As soon as I turn Javascript back on, the issue occurs again. Obviously turning Javascript off is a work around for now, but I require it for work etc.
I have done a permissions repair which doesn't fix anything.
Could others try the link and let me know what happens please? All OSX versions are welcome to see whether it is just the 10.6.8 OSX or spans to 10.7 and later.
Also, does anybody know where I can report this issue to Apple, or do I just ring them up and tell them?
    Many thanks.

I also have 10.6.8, Safari 5.1.7, and the most recent Java update. I can access the MSN site through the link you provided but, on returning to Apple Discussions, got a 60-second stall before Safari would work right again. Yes, it very well could be the site.
The only Safari 5.x crashes I've had came after a Java update 12-18 months ago. I had repaired permission both before and after the update but the crash log showed a number of dlink files with question marks instead of version numbers. Another repair permission restored function and I've had no further crashes. So I always repair permissions before any subsequent Java update that's offered and twice after. For what ever reason, it seems to keep me going.

Just wondering if I should update the latest Java software download and if so shoould I make any other changes on my old MBP?  I have downloaded all the Java updates.

mendel-  I have downloaded all Java updates.  However several times I was told by an expert in this forum to check something and open Java pref and do something else.  I did download it but my question was do I need to check or uncheck or do anything with Java Pref. I think the table is called.  Just checking so that not only the downloaded was installed but anything else that nees to be done was done.  this is why I ended up at this Security article which was way ovr my head.

  • Java Update is throwing a SSL Warning

The Java Update is throwing a SSL warning. A wrong SSL certificate seems to be attached to the download from Oracle Servers. Check out the screenshot:
    https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=BE3FCC67AA108DA3!1050

hello cdizdad60, you can attach a screenshot when you reply to your original question. but as far as you've described it, that dialog doesn't seem to come from firefox but is getting generated by java itself. in this case the firefox instructions on how to activate java don't apply & you'd probably have to contact oracle's support for further help...

  • Software Update Questions

    Hi everybody,
I'm still relatively green in the computer world, so, I'm sure these questions are way to "rookie" for you. Nevertheless; here they are.
    Software Update Questions:
    1. What is J2SE 5.0 Release 4, version 4.0 (39.3 MB) and, is it necessary to install?
    2. What is X11 Update 2006, version 1.1.2 (51.0 MB) and, is it necessary to install?
In case you need to know, I have Mac OS X (10.4.8) with a Verizon FIOS connection.
    Thanks,
    Wayhun
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

J2SE 5.0 is the latest version of Java. Mac OS X originally ships with Java 1.4 and this gives you the opportunity to upgrade to the latest version.
It's an optional upgrade since there are many changes between Java 1.4 and java 5, so some people might prefer to hold off until they've verified their Java apps work with the new version. For most people, though, it isn't an issue.
X11 (also known as XWindows) is a standard GUI interface for Unix systems. If you're using X11 you'd probably alredy know about it and therefore wouldn't be asking this question. It's not going to cause any problems if you update it, but it won't offer any advantage unless you're running X11-based applications.

  • HT5228 security content of Java update for 10.4...?

Will there be a security content of Java update for older versions of OS X versions such as 10.4.11?

I wonder if it has been determined what percentage of the Macs compromised were using OS systems from antiquity? Do you think I should get a specific security software, or just a new machine with a top OS?
It was problably something else. Few malware authors ever bothered to write PowerPC code. Having intel chips makes things a bit easier because the malware can be cross-platform a low-level. The only thing they have to worry about are operating system differences, not chip differences.
I suggest asking your question in a forum dedicated to that model machine. There are still plenty of people using those machines and have experience with such problems. It is likely just hardware incompatibilities. Older hardware sometimes doesn't want to talk with newer hardware.

  • AppStore submissions fail after Java Update 2012-006 1.0

    Dear All.
After running the Java Update 2012-006 1.0 submissions to the app store using XCode Organizer no longer work. Upload fails.
The error message is well known (an error occurred uploading to the itunes store) and it is also known that the error is related to Java as described in this post http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5783481/an-error-occurred-uploading-to-the-it unes-store - how ever the fixed described there did not work for me.
Uploading the app from a machine which did not run the update worked.

Fixed... Here is what I did.
To start with I had installed Oracles Java 1.7 JDK, which was really messing things up.
Went to Finder>Applications and entered in Search box - JavaAppletPlugin.plugin
Right clicked and removed to trash.
A check in Terminal for Java version still showed Java 1.7
    my-imac:~ my$ java -version
    java version "1.7.0_07"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_07-b10)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 23.3-b01, mixed mode)
    1. Finder>Computer>Library>Java>JavaVirtualMachines showed the 1.7 SDK (make note of exact name of the Directory name)
Just in case anything went wrong I copied the 1.7 SDK folder to my desktop before doing the next item
    2. In terminal type
    cd /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines
    3. You should now be in that directory
sudo rm -rf jdk1.7.0_06.jdk  (or whatever the exact name of the directory is in step 1.)
You may have to enter your administrator password
The directory should now be deleted and you can verify in Terminal by
    java -version
    Mine now showed "Java 1.6_xxx"
Went into Xcode Organizer and distributed my app to the iTunes store without a problem. Whoo, hoo!

  • Type Error: oE Started immediately after Auto Java update! Other threads just started but doesn't mention the relationship! Firefox reset does not correct

Problem correlates exactly with the Java update time per event viewer! Problem is starting to gain traction as more users experience same! Can’t determine how to fix? Maybe an error in the Java update?

I have also been having this problem, starting today, although my Firefox doesn't crash/close when the error box pops up - I can just close the box and carry on browsing.
However, as with the person in the thread listed above, I found that disabling McAfee SiteAdvisor seems to stop it happening (it happened fairly at random, but in about half an hour of browsing with it disabled, I haven't had the error pop up, compared to within a few minutes when SiteAdvisor is enabled). It looks like there was also a SiteAdvisor update today, so that also correlates with the onset of this problem. Are other people getting this problem using SiteAdvisor? I don't know much about the mechanics of SiteAdvisor - could there be a link with Java too?
    Using Firefox 27.0, Windows 7 SP1, McAfee SiteAdvisor 3.6.5, Java 10.45.2.18.
