Java Video Issues in Snow Leopard

Hello,
After a little help and adive....
Been trying to fathem out my trouble with Java videos and games, I have looked through previous posts and tried what has been sugested and still not working, only thing I havnt tried is reinstalling Java, as I can seem to work out how to!
The videos are choppy, or I just get a black screen for about 15 sec, and games wont load or I cant click anything, I have been to the Java site and tested my installed Java and it showed it is working.
The Java prefrences wont let me select between 64 and 32 bit, and I dont have the check box that is the solution via Mac Support.
I get the same problems on Safari, Firefox and Chrome.
I am running a Macbook Pro on:
Version 10.6.8 Build 10K549
Safari 5.1.5
Java 1.6.0_41-b04-415
Any help would be great!
Cheers, Steve

Java games?  What games are written in Java?
Even more curious, what videos use Java?
I think you are confusing Java with flash.
I don't know about the games but the video is dependent on a number of things; whether other processes are hogging the cpu, your internet connection speed, how fast the video server is, and how high the resolution of the video is.  In the latter case most online flash videos like youtube allow you to lower the resolution.  They have a little gear in the lower right toolbar of a video which you click to lower the resolution.
Make sure you have the latest flash plugin installed.  You should download it only from the adobe site.

  • Continuing font encoding and tag issues with snow leopard and CS4oI

I am looking for help with a font handling issue with snow leopard and cs4 Indesign. Despite numerous calls and hours on the phone neither Apple nor Adobe has been helpful. I have had this issue open with Adobe since oct 5 but they remain totally unresponsive to date. I need to be able to use Type 1 fonts and do the following , export a pdf from Indesign with the following attributes: 1) xml tags for stories and objects. 2) have the fonts encoded as ansi and embedded.
Some additional information  - exporting to ps is not an option as it destroys the xml tags. and doesn't guarantee that the fonts won't become CID or some other odd encoding.
    As it stands now,
Leopard (10.5.8) and CS3 creates ansi encoded fonts with xml tags.
Leopard (10.5.8) and CS4 creates ansi encoded fonts with xml tags.
Snow leopard and CS3 creates ansi encoded fonts and xml tags
Snow leopard and CS4 creates custom subsetted fonts and some xml tags.
If any one has any advice on how to force specific font encodings from CS4 pdf exports so that i can preserve the tags and get the correct fonts I would be grateful.

The font encoding is not a function of the OS version, but rather of how a font is internally encoded and the content you are representing with the font.
If you are seeing a difference between MacOS 10.5 and 10.6 with the same Adobe software, it probably has something to do with use of a system font that is somehow different from one version of the OS to another. InDesign does not use any of the OS' font handling software.
Assuming that the fonts are embedded, subset or not, what is your issue with whether a font is ANSI-encoded, custom-encoded, or CID-encoded? It should make no difference for purposes of workflow beyond InDesign for software that adheres to the PDF specification (including all versions of PDF from 1.3 and up to 1.7 plus ISO 32000-1 PDF and all versions of PDF/X and PDF/A).
Neither InDesign or any other Adobe application provides user choices for the encoding since it shouldn't make a difference. The encodings chosen by Adobe's core technology components are for a combination of optimization and to support proper text search, copy, etc.

  • Fstab causes .dmg mounting issues in Snow Leopard

I am having this odd issue is Snow Leopard with fstab. If I use valid partition UUIDs in fstab to regulate mounting, then .dmg volumes do not get mounted properly (or at least get mounted in such a way that Finder has issues). After mounting, the .dmg volume is greyed out in Finder, but any subdirectory of the root directory of the volume can be accessed using the Go To option. After mounting, there also appear two alias for the volume on the desktop neither of which do anything.
Looking at mount after mounting a .dmg I get:
/dev/disk1 on /Volumes/Pacifist 2.5.2 (hfs, local, nodev, nosuid, read-only, noowners, quarantine, mounted by yarmola)
    Which is normal.
I can access the volume through terminal without any issues as well. If I unmount the volume (via hdiutil or Disk Utility for example) it unmounts, but the two aliases on the Desktop remain and do not disappear.
My fstab simply looks like this:
    UUID=6B12B7BA-4469-3344-8121-1939A6B0219F /Library/Mounts/Protected/SCUBA hfs rw
If I remove that, or change it to use LABEL or to a non valid UUID (i.e. one that is not a non-root partition UUID) then .dmg volumes mount fine. The actual partition filesystem does get mounted.
In system log I get the following error messages:
    Oct 23 15:05:18 rdev-cl-19-imal hdiejectd[642]: running
    Oct 23 15:05:20 rdev-cl-19-imal com.apple.KernelEventAgent[52]: KernelEventAgent: sysctl_queryfs: Operation not supported on socket
Oct 23 15:05:20 rdev-cl-19-imal mds[50]: (Error) Volume: sysctl_queryfs failed: Operation not supported on socket
    Any ideas?

It's possible the dmgs are not compatible with your verson of SL or even with SL.  The latest version is OS 10.6.7.
Did you read the system requirements of the files you are trying to download?

  • Java issues, considering Snow Leopard upgrade

I'm being told by a number of sites that I need to install Java, but I already have Java SE 6 version 1.6.0_26 running. I suspect I may need to upgrade Java, but there isn't another Java update for Leopard that I'm aware of. Am I correct in assuming that I'm going to have to purchase Snow Leopard in order to get this to work, oris there another solution?

Is that what Java Preferences app says you're running?
    Latest I could find for Leopard/10.5.8 is v 1.6.0_15...

  • External LCD TV issues with Snow Leopard

Ever since I updated to Snow Leopard, my LCD TV is overscanning the image. If I Maximize Firefox, the outside controls are cropped off. This never used to happen in Leopard. I go to the display settings and disable "Overscanning" and it underscans the image leaving an inch of black space on the screen all around the image, which is more underscanning than it ever used to it.
Also, the image on my LCD seems a bit blurrier. I read about this issue and tried the Text Smoothing tip here http://blog.petersendidit.com/post/blurry-text-on-external-monitor-with-snow-leo pard/ but that didn't change anything either.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

There should be an underscanning slider in the Displays preference you can fiddle with (or is that what you were referring to?).
Does your TV have a "full pixel" mode (or similar words)?  Does your TV have it's own overscan/underscan settings?
Which video card?  How is the TV connected to that video card?

  • Java update version on Snow Leopard

IntelliJ had major problems with the Java Update 4 available for Leopard, so I ended up not installing it on my MBP. I am hesitating to install Snow Leopard (very temptingly sitting next to my keyboard) because of the issue. Anyone know if Java is at update 4 (I would expect it is), and if anyone has had a chance to see if there are issues with Java 6? Hoping to upgrade soon, but don't really want to have to clean reinstall Leopard in a day.
    Thanks
    Rakesh

Thanks. I installed the update yesterday, and have been running IntelliJ for a few hours without any of the issues I noticed with update 4.
The only issue I have seen so far is with screen sharing. I get just a blank window when I try to access my Leopard desktop machine. Not related in any way with my original post, but just thought I would share the information in case someone finds it useful.

  • IDVD (possibly iLife) issues with Snow Leopard

So I've been trying to create a wedding dvd from a video that I recorded for them. I've done this before (on Leopard) and everything worked fine. Since upgrading to Snow Leopard (including a fresh install) this doesn't seem to work.
Basically iDVD wouldn't launch completely. It would let me select 'create a new project' and then load the themes but the project screen wouldn't open. When I'd go to the file menu and open/close etc the main screen would pop up asking me to cancel, save or don't save the current project. Regardless of which option I chose, the program would freeze and I would have to force quit.
This was on top of issues with iMovie in which I couldn't select the transitions options without iMovie crashing.
Now having searched the internet high and low for solutions, it seems quite a lot of people are having issues with this and I think I know why. Those people having issues seem to be the ones who have iLife on their Tiger setup cd's that came with their macbook/desktop.
Now just so you know I have done all the selected solutions such as removing the preference file from library, repairing disk permissions, reinstalling iLife, reinstalling iDVD without the rest of the bundled software. I even went to the extremes of formatting my hard drive and installing Snow Leopard from scratch and this didn't work. So I thought I'd try upgrading to Snow Leopard from Leopard, again the same issue arose.
It got to the stage where I actually ended up going back to Tiger (10.4) and finishing the dvd and burning it. Now with iDVD and iMovie working fine I decided to upgrade back to Snow Leopard, and low and behold, iDVD isn't working.
I really hope Apple are aware of the issue because it seems to be an problem with people installing the bundled software which came with their macbook/desktop on a version of Leopard/Snow Leopard and it not working.
I'm going to take my macbook into the store soon/and or call Apple Care and request a new install disk of iLife to try and eliminate the issues because when I'm creating a movie, I don't expect to have to roll back to 2 previous OSX version's before my software works.
If anyone has any suggestions, please fire them my way.

While 7.0.4 may work fine with your version of 10.6.2, it doesn't work for others. You'll notice quite a few posts in this section of users with the same error.
The only issue I can assume, as mentioned in the original post, is users who are installing iLife from the original installation CD's provided when I bought my Macbook (which came preinstalled with Tiger). The iLife software comes bundled on two cd's, which I and other users install from. Hence it's the only thing the users who are installing and having issues with have in common.
I could understand if it was only me having issues and if these issues resolved themselves from a fresh, clean install after a reformat, but that's not the case.
I'll call Apple Care tomorrow and see what they think.

  • IMovie Viewer issues Post Snow Leopard install

    Hi,
I just fired up iMovie (09) after upgrading OS to Snow Leopard (newer iMac bought 4 months ago). I no longer see the project video in the viewer. The "raw" movies in Event Library play fine, but when trying to play the movie in the project library, I only get audio. If viewing in full screen mode, all is well. If i go back and press space bar from project Library, only audio.
All worked fin prior to the snow leopard upgrade. Anybody know what is happening and how I can preview my movies from the project library again?
    Thx !
    Glenn

Yes, we've been having quite a few issues since the upgrade, too. Now correlation does not equal causation, so I can't say for sure that Snow Leopard is the problem. All I know it that all this stuff started happening afterword.
Here is the thread in which I posted my issues, some of which are quite similar to the those of Jay_S:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2141045&tstart=15
Jay, the solution to your problem recommended by an Apple Expert seemed to fix things, so you might want to take a look. It's in the third paragraph.

  • Keyboard and mouse issues following Snow Leopard update

I have a relatively ancient iMac--first aluminum bodied Intel-based model c. 2007. I was having issues updating my browsers (firefox, chrome) because I was on the old OS X (10.5.8 I think). So I did the Snow Leopard upgrade and since then have been having persistent keyboard (aluminum wireless) and mouse (mighty mouse connected via USB) issues.
I have verified the keyboard is connected via Bluetooth. I have verified that the keyboard is responding by opening the keyboard viewer and watching each of the keys light up as I type. Also, the keyboard will wake the computer from sleep and sometimes allow me to toggle between programs with Command+Tab.
Nevertheless, the keyboard will NOT type inside programs such as Word and Chrome. (It WILL type in the Post-it Note dashboard app, but I can't copy and paste into a browser from there.)
The Mouse will work in Chrome but in Finder and iTunes, e.g., it will not work. I can't use the mouse to select a folder in the folder tree to the left or to select a song or file/folder in the main window. I CAN, however, use the mouse to minimize/maximize/close each window.
Rebooting corrects the problem temporarily, but if I get up and walk away for a bit the keyboard and mouse re-freeze upon returning.
I have reset the PRAM and SMC because I saw these fixes listed in other discussion threads. Neither has fixed my issue.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Steve

    Hi Steve,
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Ichat no audio on video chat with snow leopard

    Hello,
I am having an issue where there is only one way audio when doing a video chat with those using snow leopard. If I start the video chat, the other person can hear me and I cant hear them. If they start the chat I can then hear them but they can not hear me. This was not a problem prior to upgrading to snow leopard (both of us). I can video chat fine with those who have not upgraded to snow leopard.
Audio chats alone work fine with these people.
I have tried changing bandwidth settings in ichat on both ends, enable 32 bit mode, checked the sound preferences, etc and nothing helps. We are not running any third party apps that have been mentioned to interfere with ichat.
I would greatly appreciate any suggestions..
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Also cap iChat in iChat > Preferences > Video Section > Bandwidth Drop down to 500kbps
There is some evidence that it is the iChat Buffering.
iChat tries to buffer the Video to match changes in the Internet Speed.
Now that iChat 5 "sees" the whole of your Internet Connection (or your Buddies if they are on Snow Leopard) there can be bigger differences with a 1% slow down.
There may also be a larger difference in what your Buddy can now stream to to you as iChat is Processor/Bandwidth dependant on how big and how many frames a sec are sent/Received. (your Buddy, or your to your Buddy, may well be able to overwhelm the other).

  • Watching online video's and snow leopard

i use to watch online videos like smallville and son's of anarchy. but ever since i installed the new snow leopard. i cant watch any tv show online (ie- fx, cw channels). i can still watch youtube. i searched the first 38 forum pages to see if anyone else is having this same problem.

I seem to have the same issue that Viking is having. This issue is really frustating the **** out of me. I've got two identical iMac's that had the hard drives wiped clean. Installed a fresh copy of SL, did all the Apple updates so I'm at SL 10.6.1. Installed Flip4Mac 2.3.0.14, Perian 1.1.4, QT7 and I still can't get any streaming video/audio (ASX, ASF, WMV, etc) to play through either Safari or Firefox. All it does is show a blank window where the video should be or the asx page just sits there loading.
I've read through hundreds of posts about this issue and can't find a solution, everything just says to install flip4mac and it should work. I've downloaded WMV, MPG, AVI files to the desktop and they play just fine in VLC player. All the QT trailers on Apple's site play just fine in the browser as well. Flash sites like youtube work just fine too. These are not Realmedia sites. I've tried it with only Flip4Mac installed without anything else and have the same problem. No firewalls are on either. All the Flip plugins seem to be installed correctly in the Safari plugins list.
Can anyone please give me some suggestions to try? I'm a recent Mac convert from the PC and can't believe that it would be this difficult to get something working that always worked on the PC.
    Thx

  • How can I update to Java 7 jdk on snow leopard?

I am ready to scream at this point.  I have a mini mac with snow leopard 10.6.5 installed.  It has java version 1.6u22 INSTALLED.  I would like to install version 7 of the jdk but I have searched the web for hours now, looking to see if I can do this and I cant see how to.  I dont understand why???  If I was running ubuntu, I dont think I would have this issue ot even windows.  Now that saying something.
    Hope you can help.

The short answer is that you can't.  Apple supported Java directly up to Java SE 6.  They have now stopped supporting Java and begun to support the Open Source Java.net technologies project (which is basically the FOSS spin-off of Oracle for Java).
The Java.net current version of Java SE 7 is available for distribution via Oracle (and developer previews are available from Java.net).  However, it requires OS X 10.7.2 or higher.
I'm not sure if you can update your current version of Java SE 6 to the latest version if you update the OS to 10.6.8 (although I suspect that you can), but there is no path to reach Java SE 7 outside of an OS upgrade that I know of.
    Cheers.
