Java Virtual Machine and page swaping ..

Hi,
Could you please tell me if the JVM based on page swapping or not?
I am asking this question because of the following:
1- on my laptop I have only 256MB and I set the heap size to -Xms=512MB
-Xmx=1024MB and the heap starts working.
2- I note that there is many many access to my hard disk while running my application and this process degrade the total performance.
Does this mean that JVM use page swapping in some how to cover the amount of memory set by -Xms,-Xmx.
in other experiment on other machine with 2GB RAM, I tried to keep hashtable of size approximately = 100MB (this is the size of all keys + all values only without the skeleton of the hashtable i.e. the pointers). I note that the system becomes very slow writing to the hashtable and there was a great access to the harddisk!?
Having two GB RAM means at lease we can store a hashtable of total size =1GB in memory?!!!!
Please tell me what is the problem.
Many thanks,
Regards,
Ahmad.

Hi Ahmad,
With a 32-bit JVM you could potentially initialize a maximum heap size of 4GB. Though, in most of the cases this amount is little under 4GB or a little under 2GB. In the case of your system, which has 256MB if you set a maximum heap size of 1024MB/1GB, then the JVM will swap to disk pages to account for the extra space needed.
Now, for the other case, the machine with 2GB of RAM, you probably are seeing disk I/O due to flushing the buffer caches when syncing, checkpointing, trickling etc. What are the exact operations you're performing when you see the application going to disk? You can use the output of "db_stat -m -h <env_path>" to display the cache statistics, and "db_stat -d <db_file> -h <env_path>" to obtain statistics for a particular database within the environment.

  • Differences between Java Virtual Machine and Java HotSpot ??

I am little bit confused between Java Virtual Machine and Java HotSpot.
    My understanding is:
Java Virtual Machine is the environment to execute Java programs. I think I could understand this part.
However, the description says, "The Java HotSpot product line consists of a server-side and a client-side virtual machine that share the Java HotSpot runtime environment, but have different compilers suited to the different performance characteristics of clients and servers."
I am confused with server-side virtual machine. what is that?? Does it mean the environment to execute Java programs remotely through network?? For example, Java plug-in.?? Please advise.

    Hotspot is a JVM.
Hotspot has different configuration settings. Some of those settings are better suited for a client application. Some are better suited to server applications.

  • HT203176 my computer hangs frequently - rolling beach ball - apparently some endless loops - I have repaired the permissions countless times but the problem continues - the faulty permissions include java virtual machine and language libraries

I get the rolling beach ball frequently when using a browser -I have repaired the permissions a number of times - each time I do this - the same issues show up-  language libraries, java virtual machine etc - after a restart the btowser works for awhile and then hangs again - i trashed both Chrome and Firefox and am now using Safari and Opera - neither of which work very fast and I still get a frozen screen - rolling beach ball - have to force quit.On the activity monitor it shows that the  browser I am using has several hangs.
Aside from reinstalling everything - is  there a fix for this?

Those Permissions errrors will keep appearing. They are not errors; ignore them. Your problem has nothing to do with Permissions repair. Many possible causes, one of which may be A-V. Do you have any A-V installed?
What does Disk Utility show for SMART Status for the drive? Verify the Disk.
Open Activity Monitor>CPU tab. Anything hogging the CPU when the slowdowns occur? Switch to the Memory tab. What does it show for free and inactive? Also, Page ins, Page outs and Swap used?'
How many applications open concurrently when this happens?
How much drive free space? You should maintain at least around 20-30GB.

  • Java virtual machine and yahoo/pogo

i am trying to play yahoo and pogo games, and it pops up that i need to download java virtual machine for it to load, i do, then it goes to MS website saying i need a more recent version of JVM to get to that screen. I got MSIE 6. i need to play these games. please help. help.

I just experienced this issue and found a solution. What operating systems are you running. I am on Windows XP. I downloaded Java Virtual Machine (which can be found on this website) and it worked fine until I allowed my system to receive an update on the Microsoft Virtual Machine. This is a brand new computer and had the windows update alerts. I had to restore my system to the day before I allowed update and everything is working again. I suggest downloading Java virtual Machine. No one else on here was helping and Gateway had no clue how to help me. After three weeks I figured this out by myself.....I hope this fix works for you!

  • Error while installing SOA, "Could not create java virtual machine"

I am trying to install SOA latest release, but am getting an error stating "Could not create java virtual machine" and just that. No log, nothing. Could anybody help me out on this?

Is JRE installed on your machine?
If yes it may get corrupted, try to remove and reinstall jre again. Then try to install SOA.

    Hi experts,
after I installed the SP1 of Design Studio 1.2 I become the Message "Failed to create java virtual machine" and I´m not able to start the Design Studio.

    Any ideas or experiences?
    Many thanks and regards,

    Hello Max,
many thanks for your reply and your in my case absolutely correct answer!
In respect to your solution proposal I have renamed my Analysis-workspace folder to "Analysis-workspace-V0"
After I have started the Design Studio 1.2 SP1 a new Analysis workspace folder was created with the typical standard name "Analysis-workspace"
So I have my old Design Studio Application and an new empty Analysis folder.
By the way, in my case in addition to the folder rename it was necessary to change the -Xmx Value (SapDesignStudio.ini File) a little bit lower as in standard (in the DS1.2 SP1 setting) 1024m. To become not the Message "Failed to create Java Virtual Machine" I have changed the -Xmx Value from 1024m to 512m.
Now I´m able to start the Design Studio 1.2 SP1 as expected without Message and without breaks down after 5-6 seconds during the startup.
    Thanks again!
    Best regards,
    Michael

  • I have updated my iTunes to the newest version, 10-25 on a windows XP system. Now my java virtual machine is not working and I need it to run applet window. My Java is also newest version. What can I do to fix/repair my issue?

I need help with java on windowsXP after updating iTunes to the latest version. My java will not work and I get error message need java virtual machine to run applet window. Did not have this problem prior to the iTunes update.
    Please help, Thanks

If your library was working on your computer and then popped up empty all of a sudden then this might be what you need...
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

  • Saving files and future Java Virtual Machine updates questions

So I've made A program that keeps a list of Ingredients and Recipes for my dads small business. This program is currently on 3 computers my dads, the secretaries, and mine. I made it so it saved and loaded from a shared folder in the network where all the computers has access. The secretary and my dads computer saved and loaded the program fine with changes from one to the other, but mine wouldn't. If I save what information I put on my computer the other computers could no longer load the save file. If i saved something on the secretary or dads computer then my computer would not be able to load the file.
well i solved this problem by re downloading Java virtual machine on my computer.
this brings me to my question:
Will future virtual machine updates make it so the program can't read old .dat files (I've been using ObjectInputStreams and ObjectOutputStreams to save and load)
Sorry for the long story before the question I just wanted to state how I came to the question.

Yes, absolutely. That is one of the problems with using serialization to save data. Fortunately the serialization tutorial mentions it and explains some strategies for minimizing the problem. So have a look at that tutorial.

  • Load Plan and Java Virtual Machine

    Hi,
We're think about using ODI 11g Load Plan, but I've got a question about their behaviour.
Suppose I've got a load plan that launches 2 scenarios in parrallel with standalone agent.
Will ODI launch 2 Java Virtual Machine "as if we just launch 2 ODI commands (startscen.bat)" or will it use only 1 Virtual Machine ?

Okay let me try to help you on this.
Oracle Data Integrator agents process each scenario execution instance as a session. Each session exists in the agent as a separate thread of the agent Java process.
When a scenario is executed on an agent, the agent creates a session in the repository that corresponds to this scenario's instance. The agent reads each task of this session from the repository, processes it, and writes the result - the return code, message and tasks metrics such as the duration or number of rows processed - into the repository.
    Hence multiple session multiple thread.
    Hope you are clear now.
    Thanks.

  • The crash happened outside the java virtual machine in native code

    Hi,
I have a biometric device with which I am given some C++ dlls. I am trying to call methods inside these using java (jna). I am loading the dll "zkemsdk.dll+" as follows:
zkemkeeper INSTANCE1 = (zkemkeeper)Native.loadLibrary("zkemsdk", zkemkeeper.class);//zkemsdk is the dll, I am loading the dll here.
Then, I am calling the function:
    zkemkeeper.INSTANCE1.Z_Connect_NETEX("ip address",4370);//Z_Connect_NETEX is a function inside zkemsdk.dll
This returns me true or false based on whether am connected to the biometric device or not. Thus I am able to invoke this method without issues. But for other methods inside the dll, run time exception is thrown in console:

It is impossible to say how, where and why. Go back to your code and start debugging I'd say, see where invalid data can be passed to the native code.

  • Garbage collection Java Virtual Machine : Hewlett-Packard Hotspot release 1.3.1.01

    "Hi,
I try and understand the mechanism of garbage collection of the Java Virtual Machine : Hewlett-Packard Hotspot release 1.3.1.01.
There is description of this mechanism in the pdf file : "memory management and garbage collection" available at the paragraph "Java performance tuning tutorial" at the page :
    http://h21007.www2.hp.com/dspp/tech/tech_TechDocumentDetailPage_IDX/1,1701,1607,00.html
    Regarding my question :
Below is an extract of the log file of garbage collections. This extract has 2 consecutive garbage collections.
    (each begins with "<GC:").
    <GC: 1 387875.630047 554 1258496 1 161087488 0 161087488 20119552 0 20119552

There are 2 "full garbage collections", one of reason "1" and one of reason "5".
For the first one "Old generation After " =238778016
For the second "Old generation After " =238778016
Thus, "Old generation Before garbage collection" of the second is higher than "Old generation After garbage collection". Why?
I expected all objects to be allocated in the "Eden" space. And therefore I did not expect to s

I agree but my current Hp support is not very good on JVM issues.

I am interested in the "-Xverbosegc" option for garbage collectionmonitoring.
I have been through the online document :

We have 2 full garbage collections, one of Reason 5 and the next oneof Reason
    1.
What happened between these 2 garbage collections as we got : "Oldgeneration
After" of row 2 is higher than "Old generation Before" of row 1? Iexpected Objects
to be initially allocated in eden and so we could not get "old generation2modified
between the end of one garbage collection and before the next one.
Could you please clarify this issue and/or give more information aboutgarbage
collection mechanisms with the Hewlett-Packard Hotspot Java VirtualMachine. Release
    1.3.1.01.
