Java Web Start on Mac OS X
Hi,
I am trying to deploy my Java (Swing) application using Java Web Start - unsigned.
When running on Mac (OS X 10.4, JRE 1.5) I seam to be getting java.security.AccessControlException when accessing different com.apple.eawt.Application methods (for providing my own customized menu support).
Examples:
 com.apple.eawt.Application.getApplication().setEnabledPreferencesMenu(false);
Results in the above exception.
 Application.getApplication().addApplicationListener(menusSupport);
Results in the above exception.
Also since the following commands also results in a security exception:
System.setProperty("com.apple.mrj.application.apple.menu.about.name", "Test Application");
System.setProperty("apple.laf.useScreenMenuBar", "true");
I have tried setting the properties to my jnlp file:
<property name="apple.laf.useScreenMenuBar" value="Test Application"/>
<property name="com.apple.mrj.application.apple.menu.about.name" value="Test Application"/>
This had no apparent effect...
What am I doing wrong?
Kinds regards,
Inbar.
I have worked out a solution for the second issue (of menu properties)
Instead of:
<property name="com.apple.mrj.application.apple.menu.about.name" value="Test Application"/>
I added:
<title>Java Web Start Test</title>
And:
<property name="apple.laf.useScreenMenuBar" value="Test Application"/>
Seam to be the default behavior So I completely omitted it.
I hope this helps to anyone else who is struggling
Thanks,

Java 7 Update 25 breaks Java Web Start on Mac OS X
Hello,
After the update on Mac OS X 10.8.4 it is no longer possible to launch Web Start applications. The Java 7 splash screen appears for a brief moment, but the application isn't started. There is a Java Web Start process that remains though. I also tried this on the command-line with the same result.
Best regards,
Werner.As the website said, Java Web Start is only supported on Mac OS X 10.1.
http://java.sun.com/products/javawebstart/
Cheers,
A.A.
I would like to know if Java Web Start works on Mac OS
8 and 9. If the answer is yes, would you please let
me know what is the package to download to achieve
that? I would also like people's comment on how
easy/hard is Java Web Start works, if it is buggy, and
how well it is working on Mac OS. I am evaluating
whether we are going to incorporate this technology
into our application. I would highly appreciate your
input. -
Hello,
I've been searching internet and reading the problems related to Java Web Start and JNLP.
But no solution I read can solve what I faced.
I'm running Mac OS x 10.4.8 and Macintosh updates the Java in my machine so that it has Java version 1.4.2 and Java 1.5.0
The application I'm running needs to be running in JRE 1.4.2.
So I changed the Java Preferences so that the default Java setting is JRE 1.4.2. However, the JNLP application still running in Java 1.5.0
So I changed the MIME and make sure the JNLP is opened with Java Web start instead. The Java Web start is for version 1.4.2. I also change its preference so that the console is opened.
I tried to run the JNLP application once again. Java web start 1.4.2_09 starts and console open, but the Java Runtime is still showing Java 1.5.0
I adjust the JNLP file so that the version is only showing 1.4.2_09 (ignoring all other variables of version 1.4.1, 1.4.2, etc found in the original JNLP file). That didn't work either.
I search on methods on how to uninstall Java 1.5.0 in Mac - apple page told me that I can't do that unless I reinstall the whole OS.
I am henceforth declare that I am stuck now !!!! Heellllpp....Are you up to date with the updates?
Update for Snow Leopard users:
Apple issued update 12 for Java for OS 10.6:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1573
Note: On systems that have not already installed Java for Mac OS X 10.6 update 9 or later, this update will configure web browsers to not automatically run Java applets. Java applets may be re-enabled by clicking the region labeled "Inactive plug-in" on a web page. If no applets have been run for an extended period of time, the Java web plug-in will deactivate.
If, after installing Java for OS X 2013-002 and the latest version of Java 7 from Oracle, you want to disable Java 7 and re-enable the Apple-provided Java SE 6 web plug-in and Web Start functionality, follow these steps:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5559?viewlocale=en_US
Further update:
Apple issued this Java related security update No. 13 on February 19:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5666
and Update No. 14 on March 4: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1573
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5677
The standard recommendation is for users to turn off Java except when they have to use it on known and trusted websites (like their bank). Javascript, which is unrelated despite the name, can be left on. -
I am new to the Mac OS and to Java Web Start. Using Java Web Start to launch a Java application on the Mac is discussed in several of the posts here. However, in the requirement section of the Overview for Java Web Start says
"Requirements
Desktop/Client requirements:
The client machine requires support for the Java Runtime Environment (JRE), version 1.3 or later. Java Web Start is available for Windows 98/NT/2000/ME/XP, the Solaris Operating Environment, and Linux."
As you can see, Mac OS is not mentioned. Yet Java Web Start exists on my Mac. Am I looking at the wrong documentation? The document is located at
http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/technotes/guides/javaws/developersguide/overview.html#jws
I don't know how to use Java Web Start . I don't even know where to look for help. If anyone would care to offer some help it would be greatly appreciated.You are looking in the right place alright. The reason OSX is not mentioned in the document (or, by extend, any of the official sun documents) is that sun does not (may not?) provide an official java release on OSX. Java on OSX is implemented by Apple (and much to the dismay of both users and developers, they are not doing a very good job). Still, Apple's java usually fulfills the same specifications as the official sun java, so you can take any one of sun's documents on webstart or any other technology and it will usually work on the Mac. You just can't expect sun to assure that a technology will work on a platform they have no control over...

Java Web Start no longer works after Update 4
After applying the update to Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 4, my webstart files (.jnlp) now all think they are Internet Explorer files to be opened in Parallels.
Does anyone know how to re-associate these files with Java? Or, otherwise, a workaround to enable me to access the applications again.You are not alone. This has happened to me and to others. And Apple is aware of the problem.
There seem to be 2 ways.
1. Find the JNLP file in the Finder. Select "Get Info". Choose other from the Open With Pull Down Menu. Navigate to /System/Library/CoreServices and find Java Web Start.app. Then click Change All.
2. Open /System/Library/CoreServices in the Finder. This was suggested by nyagil (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9634326#9685181). -
Java Web Start aborts after upgrading to 10.4.4
After the upgrade to 10.4.4 Java Web Start (and any clients) aborts as soon as I try to launch them.
I have two clients (CGoban2 and Pokerpages Poker Client) I think uses Java Web Start and they worked fine under Mac OS X 10.4.3.
Even if I try to start Java Web Start directly - it aborts immediatly.
I have not had any other problems with the Mac OS X upgrade. And webpages using Java works fine.
Below is a log (long!!!!) from the crash if anyone knows how to interpret it.
Grateful for any tips.

But I don't know why. This i what happened.
Today my powerbook freezed and a pane/window saying
"You must restart your computer......" in four different languages.
I did so a couple of times but it always frooze and showed the same message just after the login window appered.
Someone told me that it was a "kernel panic" and that I should remove any attached devices and remove battery and power cord for some seconds.
And then it was possible to login in the system seems fine again. Then I accidently started one of my Java Web start clients and it worked. And I started the next - also OK.
So I don't know what has happened but everythings seems ok now. -
Java Web Start applications and Gatekeeper
As more of our customers upgrade to Mac OS X 10.8 or later or purchase new machines we've had to deal with helping more of them work around Gatekeeper for our Java Web Start deployed applications. Many discussions found on the web show the confusion that surrounds this technology and how it interacts with Web Start apps. Most "solutions" suggest various security changes like allowing apps downloaded from anywhere. The one we most often employ is to control-click the JNLP file and choose Open. Then the dialog has an option to "install" the application anyway.
My take-away from the discussions has been that Gatekeeper is looking for what it considers to be executable code, including JNLP files and Java applets, to be signed via codesign which is stored as an extended HFS attribute and as a result is not transferred over HTTP unless the file is wrapped into some bundle like xip or in a disk image (dmg). Neither of these are a click-and-run experience and move me from the realm of Web Start deployment to just wrapping it up as an Apple app bundle.
Before OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) was released, Scott K published on the Talking Java Deployment blog an article titled Java applications and Gatekeeper where he suggested the best possible user experience comes from creating an app that is bundled with Java and signed with an Apple Devloper ID using the codesign tool. (Note this is not the same as the code signing from jarsigner in the JAR/META-INF. The article ends, edited, with a statement that Gatekeeper does not apply to command-line tools like java, javac, javah and so on. It has been my experience that it does seem to apply to javaws or whatever is used on the Mac to launch a Web Start app from a JNLP file. It is as if Apple has said they don't trust the Java security model for downloaded dynamic code and are adding an extra restriction that seems to severely limit the "click-and-run" functionality of Web Start or applets.
Is there anything I can do to get a JNLP file to "just work" for Mac end users like it use to before 10.8 / Gatekeeper?
Is there anything in the works from Oracle to fix this issue?
JacobProbably not the case here, but considering it is a development machine it is something to check. The symptoms you describe are exactly what happens when you setup JWS applications to be remotely debugged, and specify suspend=y. In that case, before the application launches, it waits for Eclipse (or some other development environment) to connect to it. I do this all the time and what happens before Eclipse attaches to the process is exactly what you describe. Check the JAVAWS_VM_ARGS to see what VM parameters are being used.

The JDK logger uses the logging.properties file in the JRE lib directory. However I would like to use my own logging.properties file as part of the application that uses Java Web Start. This config file will be part of the application jar file.
The usual way to specify the logging properties file is by using the -D parameter
-Djava.util.logging.config.file=logging.properties
How do I specify my own logging.properties file for Java Web Start? TIA.I'm trying to track down a solution to that problem too. The reason is because of the strange way webstart is creating its own log. It attaches a class: com.sun.deploy.util.LoggerTraceListener which records console messages. The way it does this is by generating its own log messages at the FINE level. If you look in the javaws.log file which is inside of the webstart cache area, you can see the result of this. On a mac this is located at: ~/Libraries/Caches/java/log
So if the console handler is configured to printing out FINE level messages then an infinite recursion happens. If you change the console handler's level so it isn't printing FINE messages then it works. But I want to see my own FINE level messages, so that isn't a good solution for me.
I tried setting com.sun.deploy.level=INFO in the global logging.properties, so webstart's log messages would not show up in the console. However, it appears webstart resets this level on startup.
If you set that property using the resource loading you figured out above, it might work because that should happen after webstart does its own logging configuration. -
Windows Printing vs Java Web Start
I am having a hard time printing from a Java Web Start application to a printer attached to a Windows server. I don't have problems with this printer and other (i.e Mac) applications. When I try to print from the JWS app the job gets sent to the Printer window but the Status is "On Hold (Authentication Required)". If I click the Resume button I get prompted for my (Windows) username and password, after that the print job goes through normally. I noticed the Print window shows this job's username as "System Administrator". When when I print from a Mac application the username is blank and the print job goes straight to the printer. The Activity Monitor shows I am the owner of the JWS process. On Tiger web start just prints normally. This is very frustrating. Any ideas?
I have tested this further and have additional observations.
1. The problem is observed in java applications, like JEdit, not just web start applications.
2. The scenario described in the original post applies to admin users. It is possible to work around the issue by creating a custom printing queue using the Advanced tab in the Printing CP. The normal Windows printing queue looks like: "smb://printServer:port/Printer". If you create a custom queue of this form: "smb://windowsUsername:password@printServer:port/Printer" then the java application will print without requiring further confirmation in the Print queue dialog.
3. The scenario and workaround do not work with a standard user. With a standard user the java application presents a modal dialog that indicates a printing failure. The dialog does not get dismissed after clicking the OK button, but does close when the java application is quit. I have not found any work arounds that allow standard users to print. -
Java Web Start 6 doesn't work since today
Since today we can't use Java webstart 6
when we want to start our company program it cames following error
n-az10095:Commands vef$ javaws
Java Web Start splash screen process exiting ...
Can not find message file: No such file or directory
I have reinstalled java6 several times and often reboot between the steps
it didn't fixed the problem.
we can't update to java web start 7 because our company programm doesn't support it.
So a lot of people can't work at the moment.
We have the same problem on macs running osx 10.7.5 and osx 10.8.2

Your answer isn't correct.
The problem is the locale setting.
Try
LANG=C javaws -
I have installed Java 7 update 51 in Mac OS X 10.7.5. Yesterday Java Web Start starts well but today doesn't start. /Library/Application Support/Oracle/Java/javaws displays this error:
Bad Installation: JAVAWS_HOME not set.Hi,
I found some stuff, but it didn't work for me. Maybe you can give it a try.
1. Deactivate Proxy
Add or edit javaws.cfg.proxy.setting=NONE in the javaws.cfg file.
2. Deactivate Splashscreen
Add option "-Xnosplash" in the Windows registry for the .JNLP ending, i.e. "C:\Program Files\Java Web Start\javaws.exe" "-Xnosplash" "%1"
3. Run with Java VM
I created a .BAT file:
SET JWS=C:/Programme/Java Web Start
java -cp "%JWS%/javaws.jar" "-Djnlpx.home=%JWS%" com.sun.javaws.Main %1
To run Java Web Start simply run the .BAT file. To run a specific application run the .BAT file with the complete URL of the .JNLP file.
If this works for you, please drop a note here! Thanks!
Bye

what to do to make web based installer like JWS(JAVA WEB START) FOR PACKAGING?
Java Web Start does indeed ship with Mac OS X 10.1.
Another option is OpenJNLP at http://openjnlp.nanode.org which works on all platforms including Mac OS 9 and other JDK1.1 platforms. -
Java Web Start.app, apparent problems.
I have been experiencing many small problems during web browsing, etc. and have received terrific help from Barry Hemphill but he is unable to help on Java matters.
When I open Java Web Start app. I get the following message; "You cannot open Java Web Start.app because it it is damaged or incomplete". This is possibly, at least by the app's. name the cause of my troubles, though I am guessing. Can anyone guide me to where I can download and re-install the app. to see if it does overcome my problems. A typical one of them is happening as I type, the screen characters are lagging heavily behind my two-finger typing.

Java Update 4 -- "Safe" java-vm-args Arguments for Java Web Start?
Sun's Java documentation notes that JNLP files can request arbitrary arguments to the virtual machine using the java-vm-args argument. However, only arguments considered "safe" will be recognized. The JNLP spec doesn't list the safe arguments, since the list might change on a per-release basis.
Unfortunately I can't find a current list of safe arguments either on Apple's site or Sun's site. I am fairly sure that -Xss is no longer on the safe list, since it's not working any more, but it would be nice to have that confirmed.
Anyone have any ideas/pointers?I'm pretty sure that list is not accurate for the Java Web Start released in Update 4 recently. I have an app which attempts to specify heap and stack sizes using java-vm-args="-Xmx1024m -Xms1024m -Xss8m"; when I use the Java console to display memory usage, it shows that the heap is 81MB (which is the default). If I use initial-heap-size="1024m" max-heap-size="1024m" in the same JNLP file, the heap size is set properly.
Unfortunately I don't think there's any way other than -Xss to set the stack size in a JNLP file, and I need to do that too.
It's also possible that I screwed something up which caused this problem, but I reproduced it on both my Mac Pro and my Macbook Pro.
