Javascript (in Firefox 3) takes several minutes to start working when computer wakes from sleep, Mac OSX 10.5.8

Whenever I wake my Mac from sleep, with Firefox having been left running, some parts of Firefox take several minutes to start working again. These include switching between open tabs and any website functionality that uses javascript, eg gmail. This has gone on through many updates of Firefox. If I quit Firefox immediately on waking the Mac and restart it, everything is OK.

The following worked for me:
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/684867
"Problem: I had the same problem but with mac osx 10.5.8, Firefox 3.6.6 sometimes prints and sometimes does not, but the preview was always blank and I could not save to pdf file.
Solution: I downloaded Firefox 3.5.10, installed it on my desktop and opened it, tried print preview and it worked, quit Firefox 3.5.10 and ran 3.6.6 and voila! print preview is working fine and I can save to pdf fine.
I guess running 3.5.10 fixes the profile in a certain way. I have no idea how that happened but it worked."

  • MacPro takes 1 minute+ to reconnect to LAN on wake from sleep

Hi - I am having issues with my MacPro when waking from sleep. When the machine wakes, it restarts very quickly, less than a couple of seconds. But I then get loads of error messages from open apps (mail/safari etc) that they have lost their network connection. It takes at least a minute for it to regain network connectivity.
I have other macs on the network and they reconnect immediately on wake from sleep so it can't be anything on the network itself.
The Mac pro has a mnually assigned IP address so its not waiting for ever to find the dhcp server and I have also trid connecting into a different port on the switch to make sure it is not a defective port.
Any suggestions for where I can look to resolve this?

I know for a fact, for me, that Vista and Intel Macs, and Mac Pro in particular, and from reading of the problems reported - in general on most Intel Mac owners (MacIntouch etc) that routers and modems were the cause of trouble.
    Some newer cable modems included.
In some cases firmware updates helped. Some brands seemed to be "avoid if at all possible."
Maybe it is the Intel LAN - for Windows there were a lot of updates for my Mac Pro that reduced high latency and improved things somewhat.
... but I was seeing wake from sleep problems and having to use "network diagnostic" or just power cycle the modem and switches, which did work. I have NOT had to ONCE do so SINCE investing in new modem and switch. Zilch, nada, trouble-free.
    Trial and error.
And yes, other Intel Macs are going to behave differently. They don't have the same Intel LAN chipset. Our hands are tied and I doubt Apple has done any real update.

I know it doesn't answer your specific question but you could experiment with another AUR helper.  Or just use makepkg.

  • MBP takes several minutes to start...  then very slow... HELP!

This is a duplicate of a post I have in the MBP forums, but was suggested to me that I may want to post it here as well.....
My MBP is coming up on 3 years old this December... Since upgrading to Leopard in early summer this year the system seems rather slow... especially starting up. It takes 3+ minutes usually. I didn't do a "clean", reformatted install with the OS install (which I may do once I back up my entire drive). I'm using approx. 70 gigs on my internal HD and the system states nearly 35 gigs availible... I have run Tech Tools Deluxe and Maintenance and they verify all is fine. I ran "sudo dmesg" in Terminal, and this is the report:

I'll try. Have you tried basic maintenance? How much ram is installed?
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751
Check your login items. Check to see which items you can eliminate or disable.
If you have Diskwarrior, Techtool Pro or Drive Genius run them directly from the disc.

  • Takes 10 minutes to start up when switched on

when i switch on the mac all i get is a small box in the centre of the screen with a world in it, which keeps flashing for a couple of minutes, it then gets smaller and flashes and alternates between a small folder with the world in it, a folder with the face icon the same as the finder icon, and a folder with a ? mark in it, as these keep flashing on and off and alternating for a few minutes the fans then start to run faster and faster until it sounds as if it is going to explode, then suddenly the login page appears. this has been happening now for about 1 month. Now when it is on the fan keeps kicking in and out.
problem 2- since i have had it sometimes the CD draw will not open and i have had to re-start to be able to get the disc out, now though it just will not open at all >>>>HELP

No need to panic as long as you're still able to get to your data
    Login.
    Open System Preferences.
    Choose "Startup Disk".
Choose the Mac OS X system folder on your hard drive.
Restart (with the button provided in the same pane).
    problem 2:
If you want a CD to be ejected at restart, just hold down the (left, if you have more than one) mouse button after the startup chime until the tray opens. The CD will be ejected sooner or later if you just hold the button down after the restart.
But: If you drag a CD to the Trash, the CD should be ejected without a restart, just be patient. Sometimes your Mac thinks it might be a good idea to re-read the contents of a CD before handing it out to you, when you think it should be faster. That's the ghost in the machine.
By the way, could you tell me the steps you do to restart your computer? There are different ways, some more elegant (and safe) than others.
    Regards
    Greg

  • Firefox opens an empty window when macbook wakes from sleep.

Firefox 31 is active and I close the Lid of my MacBook air. when opening the LID sometime (1 hour?) later an empty windowframe appears. The address-bar is unresponsive. The situation cures itself after a minute or so.

    Hi hstoeri,
This has not happened to me before, but in the past I have seen threads that have narrowed it down to hardware acceleration.
Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
    Then perform these steps:
#Open Firefox ''Options'' window (''Preferences'' on Mac or Linux) as follows:
#* In Firefox 29.0 and above, click the menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]] and select ''Options'' for Windows or ''Preferences'' on Mac or Linux.
#In the Firefox Options (or Preferences) window, click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select ''General''.
#In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
#Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:
    * [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]]
    * [[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL]]
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

  • Takes Several Minutes to Start-up

I rarely shut-down or restart my computer, but the battery was out of juice yesterday and the computer automatically shut-down. When I plugged the G4 in this morning and turned the computer on, it took 12 minutes for the computer to start-up. 3-4 minutes on the grey start-up page with the apple; 5 minutes on a blue screen with a cursor; 3-4 minutes on my desktop loading icons, etc.
Any ideas? The computer is about 4 years old and is near max capacity.

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
When you say your machine is near capacity ... you want to keep at least 10% of your hard drive empty for systems usage. Less than that and the system slows way down.
One thing you can do is to use this tool to see what your largest files are on your system - move data to an external hard drive and delete, or just delete unused/un-needed data: http://software.filefactory.com/Mac/WhatSize_10-3-91.html
You might also run MacJanitor to run the daily/weekly/monthly scripts, which sometimes don't run automatically: http://personalpages.tds.net/~brian_hill/macjanitor.html. Some have found using a utility like OnyX can help with disk space. OnyX is available from http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs2/english/download.html . Note OnyX does the same thing MacJanitor does, plus much more.
You can use Monolingual to delete the languages you know you'll never use from the operating system - depending on choices it can save over 1GB. Choose language options carefully, as you can muck things up if you rush through it: http://monolingual.sourceforge.net/
This FAQ is good reading on maximizing disk space: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/freeingspace.html

  • It takes several minutes to turn on my computer, and everytime I try to use Microsoft Word, it freezes. Is this a memory problem? RAM?

I am usure as to why it is taking up to 10 minutes for my computure to fully load.  I recently deleted a lot of old documents and pictures trying to free up space, but this did not solve anything.  Also, everytime I use microsoft word my computer will type ok for a while and then freeze out of no where. I read on another post that this may have to do with RAM space. I am not quite sure what RAM is though...  I also re-installed Microsoft 2008, but I am still having problems. What might I do?

    Hi
I would download the free Onyx application (Google will find it) and go through its sequence of maintenance operations: Verify, Maintenance, and Cleaning.
When its finished all these steps, I'd then reset the SMC and PRAM:
    - Reset the PRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
    - Reset the SMC: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
If you still have problems after these steps come back to us

  • Firefox takes several minutes to load

It takes several minutes for Firefox to load every time I log in. Takes longer if computer is started. Have troubleshot everything I could find with no avail. It's getting old and all that I have read I can't believe Mozilla has not heard and fixed this problem.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== I think it was when I updated.

The question certainly isn't solved. I have no trouble with speed when entering sites - it's just when first trying to enter Mozilla. I tried IE this morning as a test and was into the home page in a few secomds. Moxilla 8 takes about a minute and a half. Version 3.6 loads immediately. I previously tried vers 8 a couple of weeks ago and web sites took a long time to load. This was not a problem after using vers 3.6 for a while and then re-downloading vers 8. I am still frustrated by the slow load up time it takes to get to the home page and believe this may be something the system administrators need to fix..

  • Why does firefox hang when opening and takes several minutes to come up?

Why does Firefox hang for several minutes before coming up?

I am also having this problem. When trying to reboot, I get an endless cycle of the BIOS screen, then "MACHINE ERROR", then back. Running the same dmesg command as snoxu results in a similar error message. I am forced to shutdown by holding the power button. Upon rebooting, I get an error message that all extensions have been turned off (using Gnome Shell). Then I have to logout and login.
Shutting down and then restarting works fine.

  • Firefox 3.6 takes several minutes to load under windows 7 ultimate 64 bit

Firefox was working fine on windows 7 x64. Then I loaded some shell extensions to allow symmmbolic links to fies as my SSD was filling up and I wanted to move some applcation data off the system drive. This caused problems with acronis backup so I unloaded the extensions and reinstalled acronis. Not everything works as before except that firefox takes 3 minutes to load. When initiated it shows up in the processes on process explorer as running but doesn't show up as an applicationrunning for three minutes or so.
Have tried unlintstalling and reinstalling firefox, allowing it through my firewall and using the prefetch option in the shortcut without success.

Yeah i have done that a couple of times. When i navigate through the disk it doesn't even let me run setup.exe, so i installed from bootcamp64.msi. Then after 3.0 installs, i try to update to 3.1 and after the nvidia install, it just quits. When i use my version tracker it says that boot camp is in version 3.0, and it shows an update for 3.1 in software update. Now when i go to uninstall programs, it shows boot camp 3.1 is installed.
As far as the audio, i have tried that as well. If i manually put a driver into that device, it fails on every reboot. It only shows working on Microsoft High Deff Audio Drivers( and it actually dosnt even work, it just glows red on my head phone jack.)
    Im stumped.

  • How can I resolve an issue where webpages take several minutes to download? Other computers working on the same home network take not time at all.

Firefox would not load webpage despite there being an active internet connection to the computer. I know this because firefox loaded on another home computer without any issues. I reset the ip address on the computer in question through cmd.exe and this helped the issue to an extent however it take several minutes to load webpages. I can also advise tha Internet Explorer suffered exactly the same issue and it gave me an error message early when unable to load webpages, that a remote firewall may be blocking the connection. It suggested to configure the firewall to allow connections thru TCP port 80.

    Hello ,
Can you please post your ADSL stats by following this direct link; http://192.168.1.254/index.cgi?active_page=9116 << it only works if you have a Home Hub 2.0+ and remember to type your password in.
Also we need a speedtest Use this link http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9354/c/346,4740,5520 as it will also help you diagnose and give you a list of solutions afterwards, it does incorporate the http://www.speedtester.bt.com one though as well.
It sounds to me that you have a low profile, with your stats we can see if you've been having disconnections which makes the exchange raise your Noise Margin to try and increase your stabibility, but at a cost of speed, it may have been that your sync speed has recovereed, but not your IP Profile.
Here are some helpful (I actually did find them helpful!) tips from BT: http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/35079 up to you whether you want to read those tips, because I did actually find them helpful.
Can you comfirm that you have no noise on the line.  Really a test by dialling 17070 and pressing option 2 for the quiet line test should be completed in the Master Socket with no other devices connected to the line.  ANd also do you have a master socket with a split faceplate that you can unscrew the bottom half, if so behind there is a hidden 'test socket', it disconnects all your internal wiring so just to make sure its not a fault inside your premises.
