Javascript Watch Folder in Mac?
Hi Scripters,
Need guide lines about Watch folder in mac platform for the InDesign automation.
Thanks
Karpanai
Both of those posted links relate to 'mouse position'… I think Harbs posted them in the wrong thread…? What you have asked for does NOT exist… AppleScript can 'watch' a folder and has events such as 'on adding items' and 'on removing items' these events can trigger your script. JavaScript with the ESTK does not provide system level events for objects like File or Folder. You could create a script that is triggered by an AppleScript outer wrapper by using app.doScript()… The closest the CS Suite has is Bridge's scheduleTask()
Personally I find AppleScript's 'Folder Action Scripts' tend to be a little flakey…

Adobe photoshop elements 13 Watch folder is not working
I am getting a "Watch Folder Service" warning box.
"Please start the Adobe's Active File monitor service from Service manager (Control Panel -> Adminstration Tools -> Service)"
Looks like the “Adobe Active file Monitor V13” is missing.
I need helpHave you checked your services panel to see what is running and what is not running? If this particular service isn't running then you can right-click on the column for that service and change it to Automatic as shown in the picture attached here:
The above picture is TAKEN IN Windows 7 so if you are on a Mac then it might look different from the picture I have posted here. -
ARGH!!! Distiller 8 refuses to see Watch Folder!?!
Okay, this whole Acrobat 8 hoo-har is driving me nutso! I have to finally admit defeat and ask for help...
We've been running Mac OS Acrobat 4 through OS X Acrobat 7 with virtually no problems whatsoever for years. And now the second we switch over to Intel Macs and Acrobat 8, we have nothing but one problem after the next...
Since all I've experienced are Distiller ioerror issues (myself and other people on this forum) with Intel Macs and Leopard, I decided to throw in the towel and downgrade back to Tiger for our production stations and attempt to create a valid workflow with CS3 and Tiger, since there seems to be far too many unresolved issues with Distiller 8 and Leopard.
Now I'm no dunderhead when it comes to setting up Distiller workflows, I've been doing this for years for our newspaper and others in our group. But every single time I set up a watch folder in Distiller 8 or the 8.1.2 update, the resulting .ps file is passed from the Inbox straight to the Outbox without an error and without a PDF being produced.
Here's the log file entry:
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Distilling: 63011115.AD.ps
Start Time: Tuesday, June 3, 2008 at 4:10 PM
Source: /Users/craigwright/Desktop/PDF FILES TO LONDON/In/63011115.AD.ps
Destination: /Users/craigwright/Desktop/PDF FILES TO LONDON/Out/63011115.AD.pdf
Adobe PDF Settings: /Users/craigwright/Desktop/PDF FILES TO LONDON/folder.joboptions
Distill Time: 7 seconds (00:00:07)
**** End of Job ****
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
It's the weirdest thing. You can see the output file in the listing above, but there's never a PDF produced.
Dragging the .ps file onto the Distiller window itself produces a perfect PDF, but Watch Folder workflow is completely broken.
Here's an example log from a postscript file dragged onto the Distiller window:
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Distilling: 63011115.AD.ps
Start Time: Tuesday, June 3, 2008 at 4:07 PM
Source: /Users/craigwright/Desktop/63011115.AD.ps
Destination: /Users/craigwright/Desktop/63011115.AD.pdf
Adobe PDF Settings: /Users/craigwright/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe PDF/Settings/London Free Press.joboptions
Processing prologue.ps...
Done processing prologue.ps.
Processing epilogue.ps...
Done processing epilogue.ps.
Distill Time: 18 seconds (00:00:18)
**** End of Job ****
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
...you'll notice that the file dragged onto the Distiller window had its prologue.ps and epilogue.ps files processed. This was not processed by the Watch Folder method. And YES, I did check the settings file under the Watch Folder options and they ARE set to process the file's prologue and epilogue.
The settings for the "folder.joboptions" and "LONDON FREE PRESS.joboptions" files are absolutely identical.
Now, I can remove the folder from the Watch Folder queue, destroy the folder on the desktop and create a new one, adding it to the Watch Folder list in Distiller every time, and it does the same thing every time.
I've tried re-installing CS3, I've tried fixing permissions, I've tried updating and downgrading Acrobat and Distiller to and from the latest fixes. I've tried font cache rebuilds (I know it's not related, but I'm clutching at straws here). Nothing works.
Does anyone have any clues?Hi Jon...
Thanks for your help, but...
I checked the privileges on the files I'm generating. All of the .ps files I'm creating from QXP 7.3 are read-write.
I'm not quite sure what you mean by getting users to log into the server as the server name. We're using Distiller on a per-client machine basis, not a server scenario with users sending files to a remote station for processing. The client stations use an ad tracking application to pull ad content from our server farm to their station, they work on the ad and create a PDF by sending a postscript file to a watch folder on the desktop. Each station has its own copy of Acrobat 8 Pro.
Once the PDF is produced, they send the ad back to the storage server.
I've also checked the drive, fixed permissions, and even destroyed the plist files, forcing Distiller to recreate them from scratch.
I've created a new watch folder, added the current Distiller settings file to it - nothing.
I've destroyed the watch folder and its attached settings, created a new folder to watch with a different naming convention, and added a new Distiller setting set to it manually. Nothing.
I've tried erasing the drive, installing Tiger from scratch, installing the latest builds of CS3, QXP and Suitcase, creating a new folder, adding a new watch queue with the parameters I need. Same thing happens.
I've tried Diskwarrior, Onyx and AppleJack permission/directory fixes. Nothing has been found and nothing was fixed.
I've also tried different font configurations, in case there was some underlying corruption.
All ads we send to the Distiller inbox have all of their fonts verified as good by FontDoctor. I've even created a dummy ad with a few coloured boxes and no fonts to see if that will distill. Nothing.
In every occurrence, Distiller processes the .ps file's epilogue and prologue, passes the .ps file to the outbox and creates no PDF.
If I drag the postscript files from whatever location I place them into the Distiller window, they process and render perfectly.
I have configured two machines and both of them do the exact same thing.
Both machines are brand new Intel dual-core PowerMacs with 2GB RAM. All machines have brand new Tiger installs and run the latest builds of CS3, along with Quark Xpress 7.3. Both machines used to run Leopard, but since all we saw was Distiller 8 ioerrors running CS3 under that OS we downgraded in favour of Tiger, hoping the bugs would go away.
This is truly awful. We can't use these machines the way we want and I have no idea what to do next... And I'm CERTAINLY not going to start creating custom scripts to make Distiller work the way it should out of the gate...
Has anyone heard of this problem at all?
Jon: Do you think I should be calling Adobe technical support about this? -
Weird Distiller/ Watched folder issue
I have encountered an issue in Acrobat Distiller that has me puzzled.
If I drop a .ps file directly into Distiller, it distills and makes a good PDF file. If I put that same file in my watched folder, it fails every time with the following error:
Error in /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe PDF/Settings/PDFX4 2008.joboptions:
/CheckCompliance out of range
I am not using PDFX4 as my settings file–I am using one of the defaults form Adobe: High Quality Print.
I can literally take the file that fails from the out folder after failing and drop it in the Distiller window and it distills perfectly. The watched folder is on the Desktop of an Intel iMac, not on a network. Both the OS and all Adobe Creative Suite apps are running all of the latest updates.
MacOS X 10.5.8
Acrobat Distiller 9.2.0
The Mac has been restarted, prefs trashed, the watched folder recreated, etc…
Any ideas? It's a bug in Distiller.
I entered the entire term in Google:
Error in /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe PDF/Settings/PDFX4 2008.joboptions:
/CheckCompliance out of range
and found a forum with an excellent discussion:
http://forums.adobe.com/thread/300660
Darn it. Three hours lost, a good part of it on Adobe.com looking for a Distiller update (none) or trial (not for Macs). Glad I didn't waste time trying to uninstall and reinstall Distiller, which apparently doesn't delete prefs and other system files. -
Watched folder issue with Distiller 9.0 and the Network
We found that the Distiller watched folders "In" and "Out" creates automatically to some other folders on the network. This is happened only when missing folders occurs in Distiller when network disconnects.
We just wanted to know how to avoid of creating "In" and "Out" folder automatically when setting up watched folder in Distiller. We have to create the same folders manually in the watched folders assigned directory.
I need to disable the option "In" and "Out" created automatically through watched folder to the assigned folder.
For e.g. if I assigned the watched folders to the particular directory on the network, the distiller should not create these two folders automatically, I have to create the same folders ("In" and "Out") on the particular directory before assigning the watched folder.
Is this work well? Please help me out to solve this issue.Questions for Michael:
If as the OP says; They have no issue doing so with PC versions of Acrobat why would there be a Licensing Issue on the Mac Version?
So long as each has their own copy of Distiller /Acrobat.
Also, Why is there not site licenses or seat licenses for Acrobat?
(Other products such as MS Office has such for all their products, and other companies do as well, Even Adobe has such for other products)
For the OP:
What type Network do you use? each of the Macs should most likely be setup to use the same Network as the PC if possibly.
Is it possibly to link to the hot folder on the PC side (since once created from PC it doesn't disappear). As I understand it only in OSX.5.8 and X.6 support for PC networks are the most reliable. -
Watched Folder- explain how it watches and if the watch time is adjustable
I'm on LR2.2 on Mac OS X 10.5.5, using a Canon 5D tethered with a USB cable in to EOS Capture....
So I've got LR setup to watch a folder I've named HOT FOLDER and everything is working fine there. Except that as we've been shooting (we're now at the end of day 2 of a 4 day shoot), the time it takes for LR to recognize new iamges in the watched folder and to import them is taking longer and longer. At first it was 10-15 seconds- now it can literally be a minute or more if the shooter is constantly shooting. (The record so far is a backlog of 52 images waiting in the watched folder for LR to import in to the catalog).
Is there any way of adjusting the time of how often LR is looking at the watched folder for new images? Or is it slowing down because our catalog is growing larger? (It was a brand new catalog when we started this job, now the .lrdata file is up to 2GB in size).
I'm on a 4x2.66 Mac Pro, dedicated boot and data drives, etc... it's a fast machine that I've never had problems with when running Bridge (CS3 or CS4) or Capture One. My client wanted to use LR for the first time and I said fine.... but now I'm wondering how slow things are going to be by Friday!!
Thanks for the help!John-
Thanks for the idea- but the problem happened even with a brand new emtpy catalog. I could open up a Finder window and view the HOT Folder and watch the Canon utility dump files in there- but LR just sat there and did nothing until there was a large collection of files in the HOT Folder, and then all of a sudden ZOOM! LR would start sucking the images very quickly in to LR (and yes, THEN it would start building previews).
Selby-
Unfortunately yes the Canon software is faster on XP, but this isn't an issue with the Canon software- it's working flawlessly just dropped the files in to the HOT Folder that I've told it to put the files in. The problem is that LR was at first very quickly recognizing that there were new files in the HOT folder- but then it grew very lethargic in recognizing there were new files in the HOT folder (again sometimes waiting till there were more than 50+ images in the HOT folder shot over the course of 1-2 minutes).
Thanks for the ideas, but I'm still working on this problem.
Any other ideas?? -
Watch Folder Returned an error message(Elements 10)
I recently upgraded from elements 8 to version 10, and am having nothing but trouble in one area. When I start Elements, the box will come up saying "updating", and will take sometimes 18 hours to go to 100%, even if there have been no photos to add. Whe it gets to 100%, I get this message: "The watch folder service returned and error: Message format, Invalid Tag Id"
Has anyone heard of this? Should I reinstall elements and start over? The program is basically unusable. I'm stumped and normally very good at this. I'm running a fast desktop, windows 7, etc. Please help!Hi,
I'm not sure which step solved the issue however I run a security software on my Mac so I disabled that completely.
Then I located iMovie in the APP Store and instead of a button saying BUY it was labeled as INSTALL.
So having done those 2 steps, iMovie went ahead and updated to 10.0.4.
My guess is the security software was blocking the update somehow.
Hope this helps.

MAN, I hate the labyrinthine way PSE 11 works! "Watch Folder Service" Error
MAN, I hate the labyrinthine way PSE 11 works! Both in the program itself, and in the "support" section. This is so stupid! I just entered my question 5 minutes ago, now I have to enter it all over again. I've been trying to find an answer to my problem for 5 months! It is NOT "faster and easier to find your answer on-line." It is a royal runaround! Aaagh!
When I launch Photoshop Elements 11 - Organizer
1. A box called Elements Organizer comes up, saying it is "Updating." After a long time, it reaches 100%
2. A box called Watch Folder Service comes up, saying: "The Watch Folder Service returned and error: Message Format, Invalid Tag Id."
3. Then Photoshop is completely jammed. I cannot do anything until I use CTRL-ALT-DEL (Windows Task Manager) to shut down PSE.
Get me out of here!Tou could try a reset this is from the Help system Here
Restore default preferences
Preference settings control how Photoshop Elements displays images, cursors, and transparencies, saves files, uses plug‑ins and scratch disks, and so on. If the application exhibits unexpected behavior, the preferences file may be damaged. You can restore all preferences to their defaults.
Note:
Deleting the preferences file is an action that cannot be undone.
Do one of the following:
Press and hold Alt+Control+Shift (Mac: Option+Command+Shift) immediately after Photoshop Elements begins launching. Click Yes to delete the Adobe Photoshop Elements settings file.
Go to Edit > Preferences (Mac: Photoshop Elements > Preferences > General), click the Reset Preferences on next launch button, and then click OK. When you restart Adobe Photoshop Elements, all preferences are reset to default settings.
A new preferences file is created the next time you start Photoshop Elements. For information on a specific preference option, search for the preference name in Help. -
InDesign automation using watch folder
Hi InDesign experts,
Can we use InDesign desktop version (CS5) for a remote batch processing work without any manual intervention?
For example, a script automatically picksup the input file and create pages automatically using watch folder. Is this allowed in desktop license agreement.
Thanks in advance.Marc,
Power Switch is available for both platforms. Trial period is 30 days.
Here are some topics I recommend you to read at start in the User Guide: JavaScript for applications,
AppleScript for applications and Adobe InDesign. Here are some samples (see Javascripts for CS applications).
If you, or somebody else is interested, I can post the script I wrote.
Here are a few short tips to get you started:
Don’t confuse Javascript/AppleScript for CS applications with Internal scripting in PowerSwitch (scripts written in SwitchScripter). You need the former: the script attached to an InDesign/Photoshop/Illustrator/Acrobat/Quark/etc configurator. You drop a configurator into the flow, attach In and Out folders and a script to it.
You can add up to 5 arguments which are simple strings that can be passed from the Properties panel in PS to the script.
Attach the script to Command property. Don't use Open and Save in the script -- PS handles them on its own (Open and Save as parameters)
Use $doc in the script instead of activeDocument
If you had any questions, I would gladly answer them. Probably we could even start a new thread on the Power Switch topic.
Kasyan -
Hi,
I would be grateful if you could help me write javascript script that watch specific folder for new files and add them to photoshop.
Thank You,
IvanMy 'sistem' is now working like this:
Directory Monitor free software watch folder for change, when file(photo) is added to folder Direct Monitor open it in Photoshop.
On file open Script Events Manager triggers script that recognize type of photo(landscape or portrait orientation, other stuff) and do different Actions based on type of photo. It is all automated.
But there are some 'special cases' that needs to be done manualy, and I want to do it by putting 'special case photo' in different folder. Photoshop needs to recognize photo from different folder and do special action on it. Problem is that Directory Monitor only open files, and Photoshop can't recognize if photos are from different folders of not.
I want to 'bypass' Directory Monitor and watch folders with Photoshop Script. -
Render Engine Watch Folder Scripting Issues
Hi all,
I'm trying to get the Render Engine in CS5 to load with the right watch folder at startup. I have put this .jsx script in /Applications/Adobe After Effects CS5/Scripts/Startup (from the scripting guide):
var theFolder = new Folder("/Volumes/RenderMaterial/AEWatch_Folder/");
app.watchFolder(theFolder);
Now the Render Engine loads up fine, finds the right folder, sees the file it needs to render, but when trying to actually start the render it gives this error:

What am I doing wrong? I am on OSX 10.6.4.

Find and replace with multiple files and with a watch folder
I am trying to create a watch folder that uses red_menace script to:
1. Have a folder that receives multiple xml files that run the script one by one.
2. then move the files to an output folder.
I tried modifying the set TheFIle to choose file -- the original text file to:
with multiple selections allowed
But that doesn't seem to work. I know i'm missing a step. Any help is much appreciated!
Thanks!
The way i'd like to setup things is having an input folder on the desktop (or just have the application on the desktop and I can drag the files onto it), and let it do it's thing. Once it's done have it export the xml files into an output folder.
Here's what i got so far:
on open
set TheFIle to choose file -- the original text file
set TheFolder to ("Macintosh HD:Users:user1:Desktop:out") -- the folder for the output file
set TheName to (GetUniqueName for TheFIle from TheFolder) -- the name for the output file
set TheText to read TheFIle -- get the text to edit

Edit: how does the choose from list dialog handle those big strings? I'm guessing not very well - is that why you avoided using them?

Excel save as pdf hangs when launched through a watch folder
Hi there,
I've configured a watch folder to launch a batch file which launch a .exe file I've written in C++
In this application I launch Excel which open a .XLS document which contains macros.
At the end of the computations there is a macro which save as pdf.
At this point everything hangs and I have to cancel the job I've created for the watch folder.
If I disable the watch folder and I place the starting file inside the watch folder
and I manually launch the .bat file (which usually is launched by the watch folder) everything works perfectly.
I really really hope there will be someone here coming with a solution for me.
By the way on the windows forum I've got a very disappointing answer where they stated it was probably a fault of my application.
Well fortunately that was not the problem because
I can reproduce the problem even removing my application from the equation so now we have cleared
the issue is not casued by my application.
So if you want to try it yourself just follow the steps below:
1) create an excel document so that after you open it it automatically run a save as pdf operation and close excel. (let's call this document "PRINT_TEST.xls")
2) create a batch file named "Excel_launcher.bat" and write the command
""C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\root\office15\EXCEL.EXE" "C:\teststampapdf\PRINT_TEST.xls""
3) Now create a watch folder job that execute that batch file.
something like "C:\watchfolderX\Excel_launcher.bat"
4) now create a watch folder that uses that job and for file filter use "*.txt" enable it and start it
5) now launch manually the batch file and you'll see that it print the pdf and closes itself
6) drop a txt file inside the watch folder you've created and you'll see it hangs at the save as pdf operation.
This is something that have to be fixed and it's due to excel.
I can launch and save documents with all the application I want but excel so that's the problem.
Please take a look and keep me updated I badly need to find a solution for this issue.
THANK YOU in advance,
DavideHi Davide,
This is no the right forum for your issue. I think you can consult this issue on some Excel end-user related forum.
Best regards,
Barry

I have only been using Mac OS X 10.9.2 (Mavericks) for a little while so I'm having to deal with many inconveniences that I didn't have to face with Mac OS X 10.6.3 (Snow Leopard). It's frustrating that 10.9.2 (Mavericks) doesn't let me tap twice on the trackpad in order move or drag something, but at least I figured out how to do this in a different way. One part that I cannot figure out is how to view the number of files in each folder. With Snow Leopard, I was able to view the number of files on that folder automatically by looking at the bottom of the folder (*See the example on the photo). On the bottom of that folder, you will see the number of items, which it 10. Every time I add new files (or folders within that folder), it will update the number of items to the appropriate number. This is especially useful to me if I'm going to have many items within a folder and when I need to make sure that the number I have is exact. For example, sometimes I have to save files in a precise number and order. If I miss saving a file with a specific number, and I don't catch that the number of items is off as early as possible, I may have to waste time looking through files to try to figure out what is missing. For this reason, I have to find a convenient way to view the number of items in each folder with Mac OS 10.9.2 (Mavericks) or else using it will be a hassle.
Now that I'm using Mac OS X 10.9.2 (Mavericks), I don't see any information on the folder that tells me how many items are in it (*See photo below). I keep looking to see if it's located somewhere else on the folder or if I can change the folder preferences to make it become visible. I also clicked on the folder and on "Get Info" (which would be inconvenient if I had to do this constantly). This showed me the number of items in that folder but I can't always keep checking like this because it's time-consuming and distractive.
I need to find a way to make the number of items appear on the folder itself, while it is open.
Do you know a convenient way to view the number of items in a folder?
Is there some way I can change the preferences so that the number becomes visible on the folder itself?Open the Finder's View menu and choose 'Show Status Bar'.

is there a way I can send what I'm watching on my Mac to a TV in the house Note I do have ATV
Yes, if the Apple TV is located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from your wireless router. You will still need to connect from the Apple TV to the TV using an HDMI cable. Not possible to send the signal via wireless directly to your TV.
