JAWS Screen Reader and Chat Window in AdobeConnect

Hello, I recently hosted a webinar for a group of people with disabilities from around the world. I noticed that the blind and low vision participants were not participating in the chat window and followed up with one of them afterwards. A participant from India who uses JAWS screen reading technology said:
"I didn’t face much of accessibility issues, but somehow I couldn’t use the Chat Window. As you had made me aware, I understand, that it should have been accessible with JAWS, but somehow, I couldn’t use it. May be, it is accessible with an upgraded version of JAWS."
Is there a certain version of JAWS that users must have in order to be compatible with the Chat window feature? Or might it have been user error? Let me know if there are any tips that we can give to future webinar attendees, as we often have participants with various disabilities. Thank you!

Hello Ashley!
The whitepaper http://wwwimages.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/education/pdfs/adobe-connect-accessibility -wp.pdf states JAWS 11 as a benchmark.
A much longer and broader thread on Connect & accessibility is at http://webaim.org/discussion/mail_thread?thread=4392. You may want to mine some information and see if it is useful. Unfortunately, a user could not use Connect UI with JAWS. Could be some edge case or a bug.
If and when you use Connect via JAWS, please do share your experience and feedback in this thread.

  • JAWS screen Reader and JDK1.3

I am having some trouble with the JAWS 4.02 screen reader and an applet running JDK 1.3.1_0. I have the 1.0.2fcs Access bridge installed. Here are some of the problems I am having:
    1) JDialog and JFrame titles are not read. Once a dialog is displayed, JAWS only reads "unavailable" and then the first focusable component in the dialog (i.e a JTextField). Also, if you minimize the application, once the window is reactivated, it just reads "unavailable". I have manually set the accessible name of the dialog/frames.
    2) JOptionPane dialogs are not read including titles. Nor does it appear that JLabel.setLabelFor is used in JOptionPane. If I use the JOptionPane.showInputDialog, the textfield is just read and not the associated label. Also, labels with simple message dialogs are not read.
    3) Only the first row/column value of a JTable is read, regardless of what the selection value is. I tried manually setting the accessibleName via (AccessibleJTable)getAccessibleContext()).getAccessibleAt(i,0).getAccessibleContext().setAccessibleName((String)getValueAt(i,0)) but that then sets every row to be the last value set.
    4) Accessible relations arent' read also. If I have a group of JRadioButtons and I set the AccessibleRelation to be a label, only the text next to the radio button is read.
Has anyone had any success with JAWS 4.02 and Swing applications?

  • Where are the scripts that make Flex apps work with the JAWS screen reader?

    From the adobe website:
To use the JAWS screen reader with a Flex application, users must download scripts from the Adobe accessibility website before invoking a Flex application. Screen readers work best when in Forms mode, which lets users interact directly with the Flex application. These scripts let users switch between Virtual Cursor mode and Forms mode by using the Enter key from almost anywhere within a Flex application. If necessary, users can exit Forms mode by using the standard JAWS keystrokes.
Users can download these scripts, and the installation instructions, from the Adobe website at www.adobe.com/go/flex_accessibility."
The link is broken and the marvellously dense chat support person said that Adobe doesn't support Flash Builder.
    Where are these scripts located?

I installed OEL 5.3 not on virtual drive, but directly to my desktop computer.
what is connection database software?? is it different from putty?
where can I get the DMS? ( data mover scripts, am I right?)
    wait for your response..
regard.I'm afraid, I don't follow you very well. Anyway, if you have a db, with a running listener, you should be able to connect from any client over your local network (even through different OS). In that case, you'll need a client software (i.e. Oracle client runtime installation). Regarding the DMS, you should be able to find it onto the client after Peopletools/Peoplesoft application installation.

  • Accessible Reports for JAWS Screen Reader

    Hi there,
I'm developing some Reporting Services reports to be deployed in SharePoint (Integration Mode). However about 30% of my user base are blind and therefore use JAW screen reader to access these reports. The only solution I found online was to add an HTML render
extension with accessibletablix enabled. This solution implies that users will have to export the report to HTML4.0 to have access to the accessible reports. This solution is however not working because all reports using grouping are read in a very inconsistent
way by JAW reader after it is exported to HTML4.0.
I therefore decided to create accessible version of each report to make JAWS read the report in a moderately accessible way (Although not the best). The problem is that even with the accessible version, users still have to export to HTML4.0, which is definitely
not a good solution in terms of user experience. Is there a way to enable the accessibletablix in the report such that the default report view in SharePoint will be accessible without the need to export to HTML4.0?
Are there some tips on creating accessible report with basic groups?
    Thanks
    Dan

    Hi Doris,
I'm using SharePoint 2013, Reporting Services 2012. I'm not sure about the report viewer. The download link is not working.
The reports are showing well but JAWS screen reader reads it without mentioning the column headers unless it is exported to accessible HMTL version. And Tables containing groups with subtotal are not read well even when it's exported. How do I enable accessibletablix
for default report without the need to export.
I created the report using report wizard.
This is what I used to enable accessibletablix but it only works when exported.
    open SharePoint powershell
    Get-SPRSServiceApplication, get the ID value
New-SPRSExtension -identity  ID value  -ExtensionType "Render" -name "HTMLRS" -TypeName "Microsoft.ReportingServices.Rendering.HtmlRenderer.Html40RenderingExtension,Microsoft.ReportingServices.HtmlRendering"
    -ServerDirectives "<OverrideNames><Name Language='en-US'>HTMLRS</Name></OverrideNames>" -ExtensionConfiguration "<DeviceInfo><AccessibleTablix>true</AccessibleTablix></DeviceInfo>"

  • Full Screen Button won't activate with JAWS screen reader

    Hi,
I use a JAWS screen reader for testing compliance issues. On some videos I'm testing, when I activate the Full Screen button, the video goes to full screen mode for a second and then returns to normal screen mode. Please, can anyone offer me a solution?
    Thanks,
    Rosemary

You should consult the JAWS forum. There's absolutely no issue with fullscreen on Flash itself. The issue lies with the JAWS text synth functionality.

  • Check box in a table not being read on auto read by JAWS(Screen Reader)

    Hi Experts,
I am working on Accessible pages in ADF. Check box in table is not being read on "Auto Read" function by jaws. Auto read is a function that allows the user to start the screen reader at the top of the page and read the entire thing that is provided by JAWS. I have even specified label property for af:selectBooleanCheckbox. Can anyone help me regarding this issue.
    Regards,
    Santosh.

  • Issues with JAWS screen reader

    Good day everyone,
I'm working at making sure one of my forms is WCAG compliant. All is good except when I try to use JAWS to screen-read the form to see if it sounds ok.
I have a bit of dynamic functionality built in the form and it's saved as a dynamic form.
But when the JAWS reader starts reading the form, nothing happens and it tells me no tags are available for him to read out loud.
If I save the form as a static form, the screen-reader works ok.
Is there anyway to work around this? is this an issue at the Adobe level or the JAWS tool? Is there a work around to make this work (we use JAWS where I work)
Or, would using another screen reader work ok?
I need some help on this one.
    Thank you very much,

JAWS not reading dynamic forms properly. Try NVDA(Non Visual Desktop Access) tool. It is a free open source screen reader. It is working perfectly fine.

  • Changing appearance of screen-name in chat window

My name shows up in the chat window as my whole name. Why??? I'd rather it just say my screen name. How do I change it?

    Hi misscmae,
iChat takes this name for the spot at the top of the Buddy List.
It takes the Buddy list details from iChat if you have just a Buddy's screen name and from their card in the Addres Book if you added Real Names.
The Exception is that when registering an AIM name you can choose how it is displayed.

  • JAWS Screen Reader Not Reading

I am in the process of developing a online flash module for a client and have been having some problems with the screen reader actually reading the text on the screen. The text is in a classic dynamic text field. The field is covered by a number of layers of text and graphics and is not in a movie clip. Accessibility properties for the field have been enabled. Accessibility active returns true but nothing is being read. Is there something else that needs to be done? Any assistance that could be offered would be very much appreciated.

  • Chat Alerts too quite and chat window only opens in background

I have users who find the IM alerts too quiet to hear, even with every volume setting maxed, and find that the chat window is in the background so they do not have a visual queue beyond the taskbar button highlighted. Is there anything we can do about the sound issue - is anyone else noticing the IM chat alerts are very quite, too quiet to hear, and is there a way to make the chat window come to the foreground when a new chat arrives?

  • Is any one using Bootcamp and JAWS (screen reader)

I gave my roommate my MacMini Solo. We've installed Windows Home on it and JAWS 10 (Latest version. I don't know the version number other then it's 10.)
He is having some problems with JAWS. JAWS isn't always reading the full screen to him, or it will not let normal functions for him to work (alt-E for example).
Is anyone out there using Bootcamp with JAWS that can help? I am wondering that JAWS doesn't work right under the Intel video drivers.
    -Locutus

    Hi Locutus,
I personally don't use JAWS, but according to this thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2332504&tstart=60 at least on other person uses it successfully on a Mac Mini.
Are you using a USB-wired keyboard or a wireless on on the Mini ?
When opening the Device Manager in Windows (Control Panel - System - Hardware tab) are there any devices with a yellow exclamation mark shown ?
Did you used the OSX install DVD to install Apple BootCamp Drivers and did you update them afterwards with the avaiable Driver Updates from Apples website ?
    regards

  • When using JAWS 12 screen reader and Firefox 7, Firefox crashes or becomes unuseable when trying to upload to Blackboard.schoolcraft.edu or Schoolcraft.edu/exchange (MS Exchange Web Mail Outlook).

When I try to upload a file Firefox closes and I end up back on the desktop. Thiswill happen when I am in the edit box field when I have to give the file name if I hit any key other thaqn slecting the filename. Firefox also jumbs to unuseable screens at irregular times when I click on links within either program. This has happend when using XP, Vista, and Windows 7. I have a little better success if I go back and use JAWS 11, but still not like it worked so well with older versions of Firefox.

  • If you are using a screen reader and having problems using Mail, it might help to disable automatic page updates. Please note, this will also disable chat and text messaging within Yahoo! Mail. This problem has resurfaced from previous versions of Firefox.

I get a terrible display in ATT Yahoo!

I have this same problem and it occurs with other websites (like ESPN.com) too. Only I don't get the option of disabling automatic page updates on other websites. I disabled and reinstalled Mozilla and it went away for a short while. About two weeks later the same problem popped back up.
