JDBC-ODBC BRIDGE gives classcast exception

I want to use your XMLSQL Utility to exchange data between XML
and database( Access database ) through sun's jdbc-odbc bridge,
but got the following run time error:
oracle.xml.sql.OracleXMLSQLException:
java.lang.ClassCastException:

While the SQL-to-XML functionality of XSU works with any JDBC driver, the 1.2.1 (current release) of XSU has the restriction that the insert/update/delete functionality only works with the Oracle JDBC driver.
We are testing the next version of XSU in house that fixes this limitation to allow it to support full functionality against any JDBC driver. We expect this release to be posted by next Friday (Oct 20th).

  • Null Pointer Exception using JDBC-ODBC bridge on Linux

    Wonder if anyone can help me with this one?
    I am attempting to use the JDBC-ODBC bridge on Fedora with J2SDK 1.4.2_04, however I am getting a NullPointerException whenever I get the connection. I can get the JDBC connection to work but it is a requirement that ODBC be used.
    The code is as simple as it can get.
    import java.sql.*;

          try
               Class.forName("sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver");

          catch (Exception e)
               e.printStackTrace();
       public static void main(String[] args)
          doConnection();
    }Running this program using java -verbose TestClass I get the following output.

    The UnsatisfiedLinkError suggests to me that a library cannot be found, but I don't know what library.
    As far as I know I have configured ODBC correctly. I can achieve connectivity to my database using other tools and I still get this same error irrespective of whether the DSN is valid or not.
    I have installed the unixODBC rpm.

  • JDBC ODBC bridge (JDK 1.4) exception in native code

    I am using jdk 1.4 on windows 98. I have written this simple java program which uses jdbc odbc bridge to connect to an MS Access 2000 db.
    An exception in native code is thrown only when I use createStatement with scrollable resultset. If I use createStatement() with default forward only resultset type, then program works.
    import java.sql.*;

              try
                   Class.forName("sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver");

    Is there any problem with jdbc odbc bridge driver?

    No. This is not a bug. Not all databases support (or have to support) all types of resultsets. It is your responsibility to ensure that a particular resultset is supported before you use it. That said, one would definitely expect a more descriptive error message in case of inadvertant use.

  • JDBC-ODBC Bridge to SPSS data files - Result Set Type is not supported

    Hello,
    As mentioned in the subject I am trying to read SPSS data files using the SPSS 32-Bit data driver, ODBC and the JDBC-ODBC Bridge.
    Using this SPSS Driver I manged to read the data directly into an MS-SQL Server using:
    SELECT [...] FROM
    OPENROWSET(''MSDASQL.1'',''DRIVER={SPSS 32-BIT Data Driver (*.sav)};DBQ=' SomePathWhereTheFilesAre';SERVER=NotTheServer'', ''SELECT 'SomeSPSSColumn' FROM "'SomeSPSSFileNameWithoutExt'"'') AS a
    This works fine!
    Using Access and an ODBC System DNS works for IMPORTING but NOT for LINKING.
    It is even possible to read the data using the very slow SPSS API.
    However, when it comes to JDBC-ODBC the below code does only work in part. The driver is loaded successfully, but when it comes to transferring data into the resultset object the error
    SQLState: null
    Result Set Type is not supported
    Vendor: 0
    occurs.
    The official answer from SPSS is to use .Net or to use their implementation with Python in their new version 14.0. But this is obviously not an option when you want to use only Java.
    Does anybody have experience with SPSS and JDBC-ODBC??? I have tried the possible ResultSet Types, which I took from:
    http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/db2luw/v8/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.db2.udb.doc/ad/rjvdsprp.htm
    and none of them worked.
    Thank you in advance for your ideas and input & stay happy!

    Thank you for your reply StuDerby!
    Actually the above script was before, as you suggested, leaving the ResultSetTeype default. This did not work...
    I am getting gray hair with SPSS - in terms of connectivity and "integratebility" none of their solutions offered is sufficient from my point of view.
    Variable definitions can only be read by the slow API, data can only be read by Python or Microsoft Products... and if you want to combine both you are in big trouble. I can only assume that this is a company strategy to sell their Dimensions Platform to companies versus having companies developping their applications according to business needs.
    Thanks again for any furthur suggestions and I hope, that some SPSS Developper will see this post!
    Cheers!!

  • JDBC-ODBC Bridge seems to slow down after a while

    Hi,
    I've got a weird problem going on with an application I'm writing. I hope someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong.
    The problem I'm encountering is in he code shown below. The function getAllGamesForATeam is creating a list of items in an ArrayList and passing it back to an Event handler so that I can put it in the session of a servlet. The first time I run this code, it is fast. Fast enough to use on a servlet. The second time it runs, it is MUCH slower...too slow to use on a servlet. The third time it runs, it gets even worse.
    I am using the JDBC-ODBC bridge to access my database which is in Access 97. I do have connection pooling enabled on the database. Still it is slow.
    If you have any ideas, I would appreciate it. Here's the code:

    Where do you close the ResultSet?
    Where do you close the Statement?
    Presumably you only create one connection for all users or you close it somewhere.

    My comp is a K6-2 400 with 128 RAM
    Thanks

       I've found using a pure JDBC driver (ashna's JTurbo) to be
       roughly 40% faster than the bridge after doing some
       (admitidly) small amount of bench testing. I also found
       it resolved a number of issues (bugs??) with the bridge
       (e.g. no longer throws an occasional fractional truncation
       exception when inserting timestamps). As for the bridge
       being used only for test purposes check out this URL:
       http://java.sun.com/J2se/1.3.0/docs/guide/jdbc/getstart/bridge.doc.html
       They recommend using the bridge only for experimental use or when a
       pure driver is not available. I guess you could consider this as test purposes only.There is no such thing as a 'pure driver' (or 'pure jdbc driver' from a different post.)
    The doc you site suggests a 'pure java' driver - a type 4. I question that. I know there are number of things that one can do in ODBC and in OCI which speed up requests. And obviously one can't do those in java.
    Performance problems are caused by the following:
    -Requirements-most impact
    -Design
    -Environment (cpu,network,thread, etc bottlenecks)
    -Language/intefaces - least impact.
    Changing requirements/design can easily produce impacts of orders of magnitude (by removing one requirement I reduce a 4-8 hour report to less than 30 seconds.) So how much impact did the 40% you saw impact your total application? Did you profile your application/system under load using a automated tool to measure the speed?
    I would suspect also that the suggestion that the driver is 'experimental use or when no other alternative is available' might be slightly biased as the driver was produced by Merant who is actively selling drivers too. One would suppose that they were not allowed to deliberately introduce bugs into the code. However, they might have insisted that some language be introduced to suggest that someone should buy the product.

       But i can't believe i've tested today again and the sun
       bridge is working as fast the ms bridge! i can't
       understand, yesterday i've tested a million times
       and it was about 30 times slower, i'll try to find
       what's happened yesterdayDid you use a closed network? Did you use isolated servers?

  • Jdbc-odbc-bridge connection pool

    I got a problem with odbc connection pool in my Sun App Server 7.
    When i try to connect to the odbc database (msaccess or conzept16), i got a SQLException : com.sun.enterprise.repository.J2EEResourceException
    java.lang.NoSuchMethodException: setdatabaseName .....
    It seems that i cant set any propertys like url, user or password. The exception throws every time NoSuchMethodException: setURL or ... NoSuchMethodException: setUser
    I tried this with pointbase database and pointbase drivers and there was no problem. Also when i connect direct from jsp page to the odbc database without connection pool it works.
    How can i set a propper connection pool with the jdbc-odbc-bridge? Please Help. There is no jdbc driver for that database available.
    Is that right using sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver for that?
    here my server.xml
    <resources>
    <jdbc-resource enabled="true" pool-name="access-pool" jndi-name="jdbc/AccessDB"/>
    <jdbc-connection-pool steady-pool-size="2" max-pool-size="6" max-wait-time-in-millis="60000" pool-resize-quantity="2" idle-timeout-in-seconds="300" is-isolation-level-guaranteed="false" is-connection-validation-required="false" connection-validation-method="auto-commit" fail-all-connections="false" datasource-classname="sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver" name="access-pool" validation-table-name="TAB_NAME">
    <property value="jdbc:odbc:testdb" name="databaseName"/>
    </jdbc-connection-pool>
    </resources>

    AFAIK the bridge driver does not support multipleopen
    connections (which is what connection pooling
    requires).Wrong.
    It might be the case that the bridge AND ms access
    does not support that but I seriously doubt that as
    well.
    Yesterday I didn't want to test this. Today I did.
    So I can state that it is completely wrong.
    There might be some other reason preventing the usage in a pool, but it isn't the number of open connections.

    I am going to help you out but first I would like to advise you not to do this.
    Mixing JDBC and Swing (or any GUI for that matter) like this is not the preferred way to proceed. If you want to learn JDBC then command line/shell is fine. If you want to learn Swing learn Swing. When you want to use the two together learn about MVC first.
    I am advising you to do this because nobody writes code like this (mixing GUI and database and business logic all in one class). So if you want real world training MVC should be what you look at next.
    See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Model-view-controller for more
    As near as I can tell your problem is mostly just because you aren't using the combo box correctly. Try
    String strManufName = lstManuf.getSelectedItem().toString();it's a bit of a hack but will work for your purposes. What you need in the eend is to use the methods JComboxBox has like getSelectedItem() or getSelectedIndex().
    See http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/components/combobox.html for more.
    Some other comments.
    1) It's nice to see you aren't just swallowing exceptions but some of them are kind of pointless if you just continue on. Like here
    try
      //Load the MicroSoft drivers
      Class.forName ("sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver");
    catch (ClassNotFoundException err)
      //No drivers found
      System.err.println("Driver did not load properly");
    }And then you continue on with the method. What for? There's no point since the driver didn't load.
    2) Please look into the use of PreparedStatements. Very good things those. You can use them in place of your Statements. They are safer but for your purposes help you by you not having to worry about the formatting of data you bind to queries. For example what happens if a manufacturer name contains a ' (single quote) ? Trouble that's what. PreparedStatements make that problem go away.
    3) Don't use SELECT *. It is always good practice to put the names of the columns you are selecting. This prevents your code from breaking if the order of the columns should change in any way.

  • JDBC-ODBC BRIDGE  "No Suitable Driver"

    I am trying to link the JAVA (VJ++) to MS ACCESS 2000. I am always getting the error: "No Suitable Driver"
    I am sure I that I have set up the SYSTEM DSN and installed jdk1.2.2 correctly. I just can't understand why it insists on not working!!??
    I have tryed everything I know, but I still cant get this problem sorted and I'm about to give up. Does the driver even work when trying to establish this kind of link???!!!
    CODE:
    public class AuditConnect
         private Connection Aconn;
         private String strUrl = "jdbc:odbc:CSDMATlink";
         private String user = "tiger";
         private String password = "tiger";
         private String Err;
         public AuditConnect()
              try
                   try
                        Class.forName("sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver");
                   catch(ClassNotFoundException ex)
                        Err = ex.getMessage();
                   Aconn = DriverManager.getConnection(strUrl, user, password);
              catch(SQLException SQLErr)
                   Err = SQLErr.getMessage();
    Help me please, I'm desperate!!!

    A new version of the JDK was not necessary to fix the problem. In any event let's start with configuring your box correctly. The CLASSPATH environment variable is not necessary when using the core JDK classes (of which the JDBC-ODBC bridge classes are a part of). The CLASSPATH environment variable should only be used if you have third party class libraries you wish to add. I'm assuming that's not the case so I would recommend not coding the CLASSPATH variable. However if you have it already coded make sure to add the current directory (as denoted by a dot). For example:
    SET CLASSPATH=.;c:\JDK1.4.1_03\jre\lib\rt.jar
    Although the CLASSPATH is not necessary the PATH environment variable is crucial. You need to add the JDK's BIN directory to your current PATH statement. For example:
    SET PATH=%PATH%;c:\JDK1.4.1_03\bin
    The above should resolve the No suitable driver problem you've been encountering. Since JDK 1.2.x the JDK's CLASSPATH is resolved via the PATH setting.
    Now as per my previous post you need to make sure that you really do have a well formed JDBC URL as that can also cause the No suitable driver problem.
    I'm not familiar with Win98 so I don't know if you update the environment variables via the AUTOEXEC.BAT file or if you use the Control Panel ala WinNT. Check your documentation to ensure you're updating correctly. Good luck.

  • Jdbc-odbc bridge (type) driver

    Hi, mavens:
    Does there any free jdbc-odbc bridge (type 1) driver except that sun provides, for I heard of that seemly there's some bugs that may cause fatal error occurred when using it?
    I appreciate any suggestions,
    sincerely.

    Does there any free jdbc-odbc bridge (type 1) driver
    except that sun provides, for I heard of that seemly
    there's some bugs that may cause fatal error occurred
    when using it? I have never seen any fatal bugs when using it. I have never actually traced a single bug to it.
    Merant, now DataDirect, wrote it. They ones they sell that are new and improved - http://www.datadirect-technologies.com/products/odbc/odbcindex.asp
    There are of course other drivers and probably even ODBC ones which you can find by searching the driver list. http://servlet.java.sun.com/products/jdbc/drivers

  • Can't find jdbc-odbc bridge driver

    Hi
    I've installed sdk 2.0 (v1.4.1) and am getting the runtime error:
    "Exception in thread main java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError <prog name>/class" from the java prompt.
    I suspect it is the jdbc-odbc bridge driver that is the problem. It should have downloaded with the SD 2.0 installation, but I can't find it on my NT PC.
    Any ideas?

    I suspect you are using,java <program_name>.class to execute your program.
    Then it will try to find the promram 'class' in the package '<program_name>'.
    You need to use, java <program_name>, thats all.
    For eaxample if you have Prg1.java, then use,
    'javac Prg1.java' to compile it and 'java Prg1' to run it.

  • Help!  Crashing JVM while doing SELECT statement through JDBC-ODBC bridge

    Hi everyone,
    Help please. I am working on a project on my own computer using the jdk version 1.5.0_04.

    The code that is causing the problem is in the class shown below. It is in the method getBoxScoreFromDB. When it attempts to run the first select statement, it causes the crash that I showed above.
    The connection is set up by the calling class. The calling class constructs a LUDatabaseWorker, sets the necessary parameters (dbURL, driver class, username and password), and calls the openDBConnection().

    its because you use hungarian notation - that was the hollywood squares answer.
    It looks like a bug in either the ntdll or the JdbcOdbc dll, so I'd see if you can't isolate the problem (like using a smaller bit of code) and file a bug report. Find out exacty what your sql statement is which causes this to crash - hint : line 215

    Regards,
    Ramanan

    Hello Ramanan,
    Report Builder : connect JDBC Query in Report Builder is to through Connection Dialog in JDBC Query Editor. User can use a Sign on parameter (can use, default : P_JDBCPDS or can create new) to connect to JDBC Data Source. Connection once made will be mentioned and will be reused through out Reports Builder.
    JDBC PDS allows user to connect one or more same or different kind of databases.
    While running report through runtime or Server, user can pass the sign on parameter(connection string) value, like any other user parameter.
    Syntax for connection string : <username>/<password>@databaseURL . The syntax of database part of connection string depend on the type of JDBC Driver used to connect to Data Source while designing the JDBC Query. databaseURL refer to the location of the database and its format depend on the JDBCPDS river selected in design time while creating the JDBC Query.
    rwrun eg :
    rwrun report=jdbc_odbc.rdf destype=file desname=output.html desformat=html P_JDBCPDS=scott/tiger@database
    Server eg :
    http://server.com:8888/servlet/RWServlet?server=MyReportServer+report=jdbc_odbc.rdf+destype=cache+desformat=html+P_JDBCPDS=scott/tiger@database
