JDBC-ODBC vs ORM

if my current application is pulling data from my database via jdbc-odbc connection quite well, for what reason(s) should I consider switching to ORM, i.e. using hibernate, toplink, etc.
the only issue I have currently is retrieving result sets with rows in the tens of thousands... when i run query on database engine itself, it takes atleast 5 mins (with all the different joins in my query)... the data actually displays via my jsp page in about 15-30 seconds longer....
my top concern here obviously is speed... will ORM tools like hibernate, toplink, etc. make a huge difference in performance?

No, ORM technology typically sits on top of JDBC technology.

You have not specified the exception class.
If it is java.security, try peeping into jws security directory, and set the access to your servlet directory.

Report Builder : connect JDBC Query in Report Builder is to through Connection Dialog in JDBC Query Editor. User can use a Sign on parameter (can use, default : P_JDBCPDS or can create new) to connect to JDBC Data Source. Connection once made will be mentioned and will be reused through out Reports Builder.
JDBC PDS allows user to connect one or more same or different kind of databases.
While running report through runtime or Server, user can pass the sign on parameter(connection string) value, like any other user parameter.
Syntax for connection string : <username>/<password>@databaseURL . The syntax of database part of connection string depend on the type of JDBC Driver used to connect to Data Source while designing the JDBC Query. databaseURL refer to the location of the database and its format depend on the JDBCPDS river selected in design time while creating the JDBC Query.

Slow performance of JDBC - ODBC MS ACCESS

I experience a very slow performance for jdbc-odbc using ms access as the database. This program works fine with other computer (in term of performance). However, the harddrive is cranking big time with this computer (this is the fastest one among the computers I tested, and also has many gigabytes left to be used). The database is very small. Other computer use exactly the same java version and msaccess driver version. If anyone found the same problem, or have any suggestion please help. Thank you.

I am having the same problem with one machine as well. Running MS Access 2000 (unfortunately), and all machines run well with one exception. DB reads take about 10 seconds each. If a solution has been found, please report.

Later i used (ResultSet)getBinaryStream() to solve it. but getBinaryStream() only return a InputStream,so that i can make blob to a file,but i can't make a file to blob using jdbc.....
I am very stupid that installing sun java, oracle jdbc driver etc....(because i must set a lot of thing such as classpath,java_home etc), Can i only use JBuilder to do that ?
Or i must install oracle jdbc driver ?

My guess here is that Sun's JDBC-ODBC bridge doesn't handle the BLOB datatype. Most ODBC drivers don't support that datatype, so I wouldn't expect the bridge to.
Is there a reason that you can't use the Oracle driver?

Oracle RDB Driver fails with JDBC/ODBC Bridge

Has anyone experienced problems using the latest Oracle RDB
Driver (3.0.2.0) with the JDBC/ODBC Bridge.
We have been using the Oracle ODBC Driver for RDB (2.10.17)
successfully on NT, but it is not supported on W2K. The new
drivers work fine for Access etc., but fail with the bridge.
Specifically, you can step thru a result set, but getObject()
returns null for all fields.
Any suggestions?

JDBC-ODBC bridge

Hello,
I'm using JDK1.5 and have a working connection to MySQL using JDBC. I now need to connect to Interbase database using ODBC and that's where I'm completely lost.
Could somebody please tell me if I have to download a JDBC-ODBC bridge or if it's already in the package? Can JDBC-ODBC communicate with InterBase?

Uf you want the password stored in the ODBC DSN, you'll need to go through the back door. This isn't something Oracle makes easy because it has horrible security implications-- the password will be stroed in the registry in plain text.
If you add a key "Password" with the value of your password to the registry where your DSN is, the ODBC driver will use that value to connect to the database. I don't recall the exact heirarchchy riht now, but a registry search for the name of your DSN ought to find it pretty quickly. As always, playing with your registry isn't recommended and may cause problems if you don't do it correctly.

JDBC-ODBC Bridge to SPSS data files - Result Set Type is not supported

As mentioned in the subject I am trying to read SPSS data files using the SPSS 32-Bit data driver, ODBC and the JDBC-ODBC Bridge.
Using this SPSS Driver I manged to read the data directly into an MS-SQL Server using:

Using Access and an ODBC System DNS works for IMPORTING but NOT for LINKING.
It is even possible to read the data using the very slow SPSS API.
However, when it comes to JDBC-ODBC the below code does only work in part. The driver is loaded successfully, but when it comes to transferring data into the resultset object the error
SQLState: null
Result Set Type is not supported
Vendor: 0
occurs.
The official answer from SPSS is to use .Net or to use their implementation with Python in their new version 14.0. But this is obviously not an option when you want to use only Java.
Does anybody have experience with SPSS and JDBC-ODBC??? I have tried the possible ResultSet Types, which I took from:

Actually the above script was before, as you suggested, leaving the ResultSetTeype default. This did not work...
I am getting gray hair with SPSS - in terms of connectivity and "integratebility" none of their solutions offered is sufficient from my point of view.
Variable definitions can only be read by the slow API, data can only be read by Python or Microsoft Products... and if you want to combine both you are in big trouble. I can only assume that this is a company strategy to sell their Dimensions Platform to companies versus having companies developping their applications according to business needs.

Problem: connect DB with Applet by JDBC-ODBC bridge

When I connect local MS SQL server by "sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver" as below, it works well! However, when I put the similar code under Java Applet program, it cannot run by showing error:

Hi,
Applets by default are restricted from accessing a lot of things.to enable applest from accessing database and other thngs u need to edit the policy file
Try this.
go to the jre/bin directory open the policytool.exe file
and add permission(in ur case RuntimePermission to access class in package sun.jdbc.odbc) and save the file.
this will enable applets from accessing the databse.

policytool.exe must be used to open the java.policy file present in /jre/lib/security directory and then add the permissions

I dont have any unusually large data entries (most
between 8-15 letters, the others are numbers) could it
be something wrong with how I've entered the database
in MsAccess, or am i barking up the wrong tree again!

RobI think you've misunderstood me. This has nothing to do with unusually large data entries, but rather the opposite. You are wrongly expecting data that is shorter than you think. When you call rs.getString(i) to retrieve a column value of a field, and you only want the first 5 characters in the column (instead of 10 or whatever the column size is), you would do something similar to the following:
String column_value = rs.getString(1).subtstring(0,5);The above expects a String that is at least 5 characters. Your problem is when your column value returned is less than the specified substring index ( in this case 5 ) it will throw an exception. If you changed your code to this, the error will not occur:
String column_value = rs.getString( 1 ).subtstring( 0, 5);
if ( column_value.length() > 5 )
column_value = column_value.substring( 0, 5 );

Problem using Jdbc-Odbc Bridge

I am using Java 2 SDK and I am trying to access MS Access database on my machine using Jdbc-Odbc bridge. I have set up the DSN in ODBC. But I get the following error when I run my program -
'No Suitable Driver'
Here's my code snippet-

Newbie: Problem with jdbc-odbc and MS SQL server 2005

I'm on win vistax64 with SQLSERVER 2005 and I have set up the odbc source as system dsn using the SQL Native Client driver with SQL authentication and the connectivity test in the end succeeds.
I'm trying to make a simple web app that will connect to the database and perform simple querries. It's a school assignment.
I'm using the jdbc-odbc bridge because it's the simplest way to do it and it's what we were shown in class.
I get the following irritating error:
"Cannot establish a connection to jdbc:odb:sstmdb using sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver ([Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specifies)".
I'm working with netbeans 5.5.1 and this error is what I get when in the runtime tab I try to connect with the jdbc-odbc. I get a similar error in the logs when I try to run the app on the j2ee server.
This is the java class that establishes the connection.

Ok, help came from an other way where I was inquiring about a different problem:
Connectivity works fine by using User DSN instead of System DSN for the ODBC source.

in my application I want to access an ODBC database to get the data and put it into cloudscape. In my resources.properties I added the jdbc driver

jdbcDataSource.5.url=jdbc\:odbc\:odbc-nameAfter starting j2ee 1.3.1 the server reports following error:

additional information:
The phenomenon happens only if I use J2SDK 1.4.0. Running the 1.3.1 the driver is loaded without any problems.
Is it a security issue or am I not allowed to use 1.4 because it's too new?

What do I put in my classpath? Do I have to download the jdbc.odbc driver?

you dont need to download the jdbc-odbc driver, as it comes packaged with the sdk. i think its in $JAVA_HOME/jre/rt.jar and is automatically in your classpath. You should be able to do a:
Class.forName("sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver");
to load the driver into memory. you can then use the java.sql.DriverManager to obtain your connection:
DriverManager.getConnection( dbConnString, dbUser, dbPass);
where your connect string looks something like:
"jdbc:odbc:<dsn>" (i.e. "jdbc:odbc:fooDB").
you'll need to create a system dsn on your windows machine, or follow whatever odbc configuration instructions if on a different os platform.
i hope this helps.. been a long time since ive used the odbc bridge. you should probably try and use a vendor supplied driver pure java driver. this gets rid of the need for client specific configuration steps.

I have checked and "mycon" is the right name of the
DSN on the ODBCConfig.On the client machine? Not the server where the applet comes from but on the machine where it runs.
That is the only way ODBC/DSN will work.
