JDBC with Access

I've started reading on JDBC in a book I've had and I truly don't have a clue what it's talking about on how to set up the driver. But one thing it says is that they recommend not using the driver the Java 2 SDK comes with, and even more strongly recommends not using it with a desktop database such as Access. Seeing that access is the only database I know how to use, can someone direct me to the right/best driver and how/where I can download it?
Also, does this mean that everyone that uses my program has to have the driver for it to work?

I've started reading on JDBC in a book I've had and I
truly don't have a clue what it's talking about on how
to set up the driver. All that you have to do is to have the driver class somewhere in your classpath. For example, with Oracle, the driver classes are shipped in the file classes12.zip (for 8i, at least...). To get the JDBC DriverManager to see them, you just need to add this file to your classpath.
Of course, every driver may have different parameters/settings for actually getting a connection. Consult the docs for the driver on the specifics.
But one thing it says is that
they recommend not using the driver the Java 2 SDK
comes with, and even more strongly recommends not
using it with a desktop database such as Access.This comes from the JDBC docs from Sun, which may be useful for you to look at (they come with the standard API documentation under the "Enterprise Features" heading). This page has the caveat about the driver shipped with the SDK and also explains things like the differences between the different driver types and such. I would recommend you taking a look at this.
Seeing that access is the only database I know how to
use, can someone direct me to the right/best driver
and how/where I can download it?Have you tried a google search on this?
Also, does this mean that everyone that uses my
program has to have the driver for it to work?Yes. However, if you package your app in a jar then you can put the dependent drivers in the jar file along with your app classes and then configure the jar file with a main class to execute with and a classpath that contains these classes so that end users don't have to worry about any of these details.

  • JDBC with SQL Server

    Hi,
    I am trying to connect to a SQL server database by giving table name in (SPVC) database as spvc.dbo.tablename.. If i want to access another database (SPVC_D), how can i do it without changing my java code?? Can i be able to add the database name to the connection string and i can remove the hard coding (spvc.dbo.) from my java code?? How shall i be able to do that..
    Please let me know.. I am very new with JDBC with SQL server..
    Thanks
    Praveen Padala

    In the MS SQL Server that I use, the following syntax
    spvc.dbo.tablename
    Breaks done as follows...
    <database>.<user>.<tablename>
    However connections are always to a database. Thus when one uses the above syntax it basically runs 'in' the one database and accesses another.
    Depending on various attributes of the tables, if and only if, a table called 'tablename' exists in a database called 'spvc_d' then if you connect to 'spvc_d' then you can access 'tablename' just by using 'tablename'.
    So if that is what you are doing you will not have a problem.

  • Problems using third-party JDBC with JDeveloper

    Hi:
    I've tried to use an Informix's JDBC to access an Informix Online Workgroup v. 7.22 under Win NT 4.0, using JDeveloper. I tried Informix JDBC Driver V. 2.1 successfully with old-fashioned code using Connect, Statement and ResultSet objects, coding connections directly, but I couldn't define a connection so I can use wizards, 'cause I got an "Unable to find server: com.informix.jdbc.IfxDriver" error when I tried to test connection. I've probed this:
    * Create a library for Informix JDBC in my project. This step allowed me to make run my old-fashioned code.
    * When I created connection, I defined correct login, password and role parameters, then I selected "Other JDBC" on the JDBC Driver's combo, as classname I defined "com.informix.jdbc.IfxDriver" and as URL "jdbc:informix-sqli://127.0.0.1:1526/atlas:INFORMIXSERVER=produc_shm;".
    Classname I used is equals to classname I used in Class.forName method. URL use same format than DriverManager.getConnection method, adding pair user-password to it, and those parameters work ok coding connection directly using Connection method. By the other side, looking at Informix JDBC's Manual, it says Informix's JDBC supports connection using Datasource also.
    Which are steps I must follow?

    Hi,
    Unfortunately there was a regression bug around using the Generic JDBC connector to a Foreign Database in this Technology Preview (3). I'm not able to give you good news as I don't have a workaround for you either.
    You could use SQLDeveloper to connect to the database for live work, unfortunately that will not help if you wanted to create offline objects of some sort using JDeveloper.

  • Use JDBC to Access XML Documents in Oracle XML DB

    Hi folks,
    From the Oracle XML DB Developer's Guide 10g Release 1 (10.1) Chapter 12 Java API for XMLType, it show several examples for how java application use JDBC to access xml in XMLDB:
    1. use getOPAQUE() on XMLTYPE table/column and then call XMLTYPE.createXML();
    2. use getCLOBVal()/getStringVal()/getBLOBVal() in SQL statement;
    3.use getObject on the result and cast directly to XMLType;
    Among these 3 options, which is supposed to be the fastest way? Any difference between thin and oci?
    I have run some tests about that and the result is the second option (with thin driver) is the fastest. It surprises me because I think oci should be faster than thin. Does the result make sense?
    Thanks.

    Have you tried to trace your sessions to see how much work is happening? Traces should give you quantifiable information on exact times and access paths to the data.

  • Connecting with Access

    Hi, I trying to connect with a db created with Access, let say "Datab.mdb".
    I used the following script:
    try{
    Class.forName("sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver"); //which seams to work fine
    }catch(Exception e){
    System.out.println(e);
    return;
    try{
    conn= DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:odbc:Datab","","");
    statem = conn.createStatement();
    }catch(Exception e){
    System.out.println(e); //it enters to the exception!!
    return;
    The message is that it doesn't find the database, I tried to put the file "Datab.mdb" almost everywhere, but it still doesn't find it, I also tried
    conn= DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:odbc:Datab.mdb","","");
    but still no success.
    Please, can anyone help me.
    Thanks

  • How to implement Oracle user/role security with Access front end?

    Hi,
    We have successfully migrated our Access database tables to Oracle 10g using SQL developer. We've recreated all the users and roles(i.e., access groups) in Oracle and granted rights to tables.
    In the Access front end database, in the Database window we have saved linked Oracle tables which replaced the Access tables. The forms, reports, queries run fine with the linked Oracle tables. All the linked table use one ODBC DSN to the Oracle database with the same Oracle user id.
    We need to be able to authenticate users into the Oracle database and RE-link the tables based on their own unique user id. By during so we can allow users to use the Oracle standard user id/role and system privileges to control select, update, ect. rights to the database.
    I've been able to use the VB code within Access to logon into the database with a unique id, but I have not been able to find out how to RE-link the tables to the unique user id using VB. There should be some way to relink tables dynamically, based on users login into the Access front end.
    I don't know a great deal about Access projects, but I do know with SQL server allows login into your Access project and link tables dynamically.
    Can someone give me some assistance or point me in the right direction?
    Thanks in advance,
    Larry

    We had one of our programmers here come up with a VB code solution for re-linking table within Access. However the relinking takes 3-4 minutes for 100+ tables.
    In an effort to help you understand the situation better, I will attempt to elaborate on the problem:
    We have an Access 2003 application which currently has a front end using Access(forms, reports, queries, & VB code) and a MS Access 2003 backend.
    We have migrated the backend tables to Oracle. However, we still have a need to maintain the front end in Access, since we have over 60 forms, 40 reports, 200+ queries in Access. Its easy to understand, we have a significant investment in the front end(Obviously, the plan is to migrate the front end also at some future date).
    In order to utilized the existing front end, we have to validate and modify the current front end connections to the new Oracle backend. One of the features of Access is that you can "link" tables and save the link for runtime. Each Access table can have its own link which is a separate ODBC/JET connection. As such, each separate link has its own userid/database information.
    The other issue with using the Access front-end is that Access utilizes a workgroup file to implement user and group security. The workgroup file contains all the users and which groups the users belong to in Access. Then within Access, you allow users access to object(tables, queries, ect) by their userid and or group. When users open an Access database with Access security enabled, they are required to log into Access. The login is authenticated by the workgroup file. Once, logged into Access, users have rights to Access objects based on their rights granted to their userid and groups they belong. The problem here is that when you remove the linked Access tables and replace them with linked Oracle tables, Access has knowledge about Oracle table rights granted to users; nor would you expect it to.
    The dilema is the disconnect between Access and the fact Oracle utilizes a similar but much more sophisticated security model. It creates users and roles(which are similar to Access groups), and again this is independent of Access security.
    Our solution was to still use the Access workgroup file security along with the Oracle security model. By using the Access userid and then creating a similar Oracle userid with similar table rights granted in Access, you could apply security within Access and also with the Oracle database.
    For example, a user BOB logs into Access via the workgroup file, using VB code, Access then establishes a Oracle connection logining into Oracle using the same unique userid BOB into Oracle.
    After connecting and validating user BOB into Oracle, then the Access tables are relinked to Oracle using the user BOB userid and table rights.
    This Oracle userid has been granted table rights specific for this userid.This allows the user BOB to use the Access application and still be authenticated into the Oracle database.
    The problem with this solution is that the relinking of the saved Access tables takes 3-7 minutes for about 100+ tables. This is not acceptable for users each time they log into the application.
    Our current alternative is to use one Oracle userid to login each user, and use Access form restrictions/security to allow/prevent users from updating/viewing data. Obviously, this is not the optimal solution in respect to security, but it at least allows us to control access to the data(via the forms) by using one logon required for each user, and quick startup time for the application.
    I understand SQL server does a better job in integration, but we use Oracle which is what I am trying to work with.

  • How can I set up my devices where I share an account so that I'm the only one with access to gift card

    How can I limit access to my iTunes gift card balance from others on iTunes account?

    You have to sign out of the account in Settings>Store Apple ID. If those that you share the account with know your Apple ID and password, then it will do not good. Anyone with access to the account can spend the balance on the card.
    Or you can set restrictions on the iPad so that nobody can unlock the device or restrict the downloading of apps. Anybody that you let share the device that knows your ID and password can spend the money on the card.

  • Is it possible to easily run Microsoft office 2010 with access on a MacBook pro or have I wasted my money ?

    Okay , first off thanks for any help in advance . I just purchased a MacBook pro for my daughter for college . ( finance major ) . Her class requires Microsoft office 2010 with access .  As you probably already know , and I have just learned , that is no offered for Mac. Is there an easy way To run ms office with access on a MacBook pro or have I wasted my money ?

    All that matters is file compatibility. The documents look the same. I've been a professor, so I don't see any issues here at all.
    Another option you may want to consider is this: Run Windows on the Mac:
    Windows on Intel Macs
    There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
         1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows
             XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7.  For Boot Camp
             4.0 and above you can only use Windows 7 or later. Follow
             instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on
             installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and
             installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the
             computer into OS X or Windows.
         2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business,
             Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software
             virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently
             with OS X.
         3. VM Fusion and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate,
             or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that
             enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
         4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows
             applications without having to install Windows.  The
             Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
         5. VirtualBox is an Open Source freeware virtual machine such
             as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.
             It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM
             Fusion.
    Note that VirtualBox, Parallels, and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech Labs- Virtualization Benchmarks, January 2013 | MacTech for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
    You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

  • Upgrade of scvmm 2012 sp1 to scvmm 2012 r2 fails with "Access to the path 'C:\ProgramData\VMMLogs\SetupWizard.log' is denied"

    I had a working scvmm 2012 sp1 installation, and am attempting to upgrade to 2012 r2.
    The old SCVMM product was removed (retaining the database), as well as ADK 8.0.  I then installed ADK 8.1.
    The install fails after a number of minutes with "Access to the path 'C:\ProgramData\VMMLogs\SetupWizard.log' is denied".  From my reading of the log, that was the only obvious failure, and that the VMM server MSI installed successfully.
    It doesn't appear to get so far as to upgrade the database.
    The OS is Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard, with all updates applied.  I have tried the install many times, noticed that the McAfee virus scanner was pushed to the box at some point, so I removed it, but still no dice.

  • Using AirPort Time Capsule as an external drive with access to files by guest account

    Is it possible to use my AirPort Time Capsule as an external drive with access to files by a guest account?
    I would like to store a large number of folders containg photographs on my AirPort Time Capsule and allow anyone with a password to access the photographs - at the time of viewing the Time Capsule would be connected to the internet but I wouldn't want users to actually access anything other than the files on the Time Capsule - is this possible?  if so any help in configuring it would be really helpful.

    No it is not possible.. Guest is just that.. a guest that is allowed permission to access the internet but none of the local files.
    To give a person access to the TC they must have password to access your normal network..
    From there it is up to you how you do this.. people cannot actually access files on your computers unless you give them share and password permissions for that.. you can even setup accounts on the TC although I recommend against it.. if you want shared photos anyway. All security on a TC is illusion.. merely pressing the reset and it is all blown away.. so if you are concerned about security don't put stuff on the TC people should not access.. or like your TM backups ensure they are encrypted.
    A person can then access you TC and the photos.. but what else on the network??
