Actually, none of the options will do what you are looking for it to do. That is because, this application only monitors the traffic from the device it is hosted on. That would also mean that you would have to run a copy on each computer that will access the Internet on your network; note their individual usages, and then, combine them to get an idea of the total usage.
However, if you are only interested in the amount of Wi-Fi traffic that only your computer is seeing, then the "AirPort Network Card" option would be the correct choice.

At startup hold down the Command+Option/Alt+r keys until you see a globe on the screen. Then use disk utility to partition and format the drive HSF+ and then select Reinstall Mac OS X. whatever version of OS X that originally came on your system will be installed and then you can upgrade back to Mavericks.

I have a Time Capsule as my main WiFi router in my home. I'd like to extend my WiFi service to my guest house located approx 100 feet away. Will the AirPort Express fill this need? Is the AirPort Extreme a better fit?

The normal location for an AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme is a point that is about half way between the main router....the Time Capsule in this case.....and the area that needs more wireless coverage.....the guest house.
I doubt that you will be able to locate an AirPort at this "half way" point, correct?
Before you buy anything, take a laptop, iPhone, iPad, etc out to the guest house as a test to see if you can log on and get a reliable Internet connection over the wireless.
If you can, then either an AirPort Express or AirPort Exreme could be used to provide additional wireless signal coverage in the guest house.
If you cannot get a reliable connection with the "test" mentionded above, neither AirPort will help since they can only "extend" the quality of signal that they receive.
If this is the case, you will need to look at running an Ethernet cable from the Time Capsule out to the guest house to provide the reliable connection that you will need.

Installation Time Capsule. Airport configuration stuck in a loop due to resetting - quid ?

Recently re-joined apple community with MBA and time capsule for back-up and additional disk space.
My Time capsule never was properly installed, although I did manage to put some documents on the hard disk of my time capsule (so I think). It never gave me the green light, though. Keeps on flashing amber (for 3 weeks now). 4 days ago I pushed the button "reset" in the airport configuration program. Now this program is stuck in somekind of loop, preventing me from closing down the program and shutting down my MBA.
Can anyone help me out? Is there somekind of ctrl+alt+delete fast key that I can use to force shut down of the airport configuration program?

Right Click on the icon down the bottom of the screen.. and hold down option key.. force quit will appear.. it is your crtl+alt+del key combo.
Disconnect the TC from whatever you have it plugged into.. power it down.. hold in reset.. power on again.. and keep holding reset until front led flashes rapidly.. then open airport utility again and reconfigure it.. This time in bridge.. and create a wireless network. update and plug it into the main router by ethernet. Using wireless joining is not really good enough or reliable enough to bother with.

Time Capsule, DHCP not providing correct gateway address

I have gone back and forth between my AP Extreme and Time Capsule and have determined that Time Capsule is not providing the proper gateway address to my wireless clients. Instead of providing the correct gw address it provides the address I assigned the base station. This is contrary to my Airport Extreme which provides the proper gw address to my wireless clients. Sounds like a bug in the DHCP base station software. Any thoughts?

I have a very similar problem. I originally had cable broadband and a Airport Extreme (AE) upgraded to 7.3.1 all worked fine. The AE was being used as a DHCP server to distribute the dynamic IP address provided by the ISP. I then replaced the AE for a Time Capsule (TC) and installed a new 802.11n Airport Express. I upgraded the TC and AExpress to 7.3.1. The TC was setup identically to the now replaced (disconnected and switched off) AE.
Unfortunately the TC failed to work as a DHCP server. It did not recognize the ISP provided dynamic IP address and replaced it with an 'Invalid' IP address which of course meant no internet access. I then replaced the TC with the original AE (identically set up) and all worked fine, including the AExpress.
While I wait for Apple to fix the TC firmware I am running the AE as the DHCP Server and the TC as a wireless bridge to the AExpress. Time Machine is recognizing Time Capsule and backups from two macs are working fine.

Time Capsule can't set up as wireless network, but Airport Extreme works

I just bought a Time Capsule to use as a back-up hard drive and a wireless network. I currently have a Airport Extreme for my wireless network and it works fine. When I try to plug in the ethernet cable into the Time Capsule to set up a new wireless network - all I get is a blinking amber light on Time Capsule and Airport Utility can not find Time Capsule. When I plug the ethernet cable back into the Airport Extreme to see if my DSL is working - the Airport Extreme light is back on and I can connect to the internet. I updated the Time Capsule with the latest firmware so that's no it. Any ideas?

OK, thanks for the clarification.
First, make a note of the configuration settings in the Airport Extreme as you will likely set up the TC the same way. Open AirPort Utility, click on Manual Setup at the bottom of the pane and then click on the Airport icon at the top of the next page, which is a summary of your settings. Would be a good idea to write these down and keep them handy.
Then do a hard reset on the Time Capsule to get it back to factory defaults. You would do this by first pulling the power cable for a few minutes. Then using an unfolded paper clip or something small, hold in the reset button on the back while you plug the power cable back in and continue to hold the reset button for at least 10-12 seconds before you release it.
Power off your computer, then restart. When it's back up, connect an ethernet cable from the computer to the WAN port on the back of the Time Capsule. This should help Airport Utility "see" the Time Capsule so you use Airport Utility to configure it.
If you have set up the Extreme, the TC set up is basically the same unless you have changed the modem or some other things in your network.
Post back on your progress.

Time Machine over AirPort to Time Capsule... maybe a solution

Like a lot of people on this forum, apparently, I have been suffering from the inability to make reliable Time Machine backups to a Time Capsule over AirPort. Here's what I did to solve the situation.
Here's my network setup:
I have an ADSL wireless box with b/g network connected over ethernet to a 1-TB Time Capsule which has a 5 GHz 'n' network. Using 5 GHz 'n' network where I am means no interference. All equipment that is not capable of 'n' is on the wireless box, 'n' equipment (basically, only my MacBook Pro) gets on the Time Capsule. It doesn't make internet faster, but sure makes the Time Capsule accessible. Both networks are hidden and secured with WEP (b/g) or WPA2 (n).
(the Time Capsule is double-NATted, unfortunately, to cut down on network chatter in the system log)
After upgrading to 10.5.6, I think I haven't been able to make a reliable Time Machine backup over AirPort. It may have been well before that (possibly with the AirPort Extreme update) but I don't remember. Most of the time, before the wireless box arrived, I have been making far-too-irregular backups over ethernet to the Time Capsule.
Anyway, I had been trying to get Time Machine to work over AirPort to the backup on the Time Capsule. I had made the original backup over ethernet (all 500 GB worth over a weekend). For the incremental backups, though, I would prefer AirPort because keeping a cable attached really is a pain. Of course, it didn't work right away.
What I couldn't figure out was why. Time Machine mounted the sparsebundle volume on the Time Capsule, but after that it seemed to do nothing with it. I left it for half a day and found little by way of relevant network activity. I tried the following to no avail:
* disabled Little Snitch (outgoing firewall) and the OS X firewall (incoming firewall)
* disabled security on the network
* disabled and re-enable Time Machine
* changed the name of the sparsebundle volume (that was dumb!)
* trash Time Machine preferences and re-select the backup disk
* reboot, reboot, reboot
Whatever I did, it sucked. Connecting over ethernet was excellent, and incremental backups went really quick, but AirPort just didn't fly. It would have been worse if it were slow; chances are then it'd be a hardware problem. But nothing was going over AirPort with Time Machine.
In amongst the surfing, I found somewhere how to downgrade the firmware on the Time Capsule. Worth a try since nothing was working. I opened up the AirPort Utility and checked, but it would only give me 7.3.2 (AirPort Utility 5.3.2). I searched and found the AirPort 5.3.1 software, and using Pacifist extracted the AirPort Utility application. That would let me 'downgrade' the Time Capsule firmware to 7.3.1 (and 7.3). It downloaded the 7.3.1 for me and put it on the Time Capsule without problems.
I then made a test run with Time Machine over ethernet, that was fine. The I tried over AirPort - and hey presto! it worked! I re-enabled my network setup (firewalls, security) and it's still working fine.
So, if your Time Capsule is on 7.3.2 firmware and Time Machine over AirPort *****, try downgrading to 7.3.1. The AirPort 5.3.1 software, which can download and install the 7.3.1 software (5.3.2 doesn't) can be found here:

This may be tough because TM isn't supported over wi-fi unless you're using a Time Capsule. There are a couple of resources available to you and I'd also recommend posting in the Snow Leopard forum because TM is part of OS X the OS X forum would be the right venue. The first thing is I'm guessing you are using a router, if so make sure the firmware on it is up-to-date. You will need to refer to the router's manual. New Airport Extreme with old Time Capsule?

I just bought a new 802.11ac Airport Extreme to increase the speed and range of my home network. My network currently runs on an 802.11g Time Capsule. I would like to continue to back up to the old Time Capsule. Should I just set up the old Time Capsule with wireless off in bridge mode or should I place the Time Capsule somewhere else in the house strategically, leaving wireless on, to improve range? Someone told me adding a G-speed access point or client to the network would slow things down.

You can do either. If you hare happy with the coverage of the 802.11ac AirPort Extreme, then I would recommend that you go with your first idea. I would connect the Time Capsule directly to the new Extreme using an Ethernet cable, disable its wireless and reconfigure it as a bridge.

Can I make my airport time capsule into ONLY a external hard drive?

I currently live in Japan and we recently bought a wireless plan through a Japanese company which provides their own modem. You basically connect this modem into the power and WHALA instant internet. It does not allow me to use my airport as router, but I still need to back up all my info since i only have a mini mac which hardly has space, into my time capsule. I really want to keep my time capsule because eventually we will move back to the states and I know i'm going to be right back on it.

As long as the router has ethernet ports you are fine.
Plug the TC WAN port into the router and set the TC to bridge mode .. all will be good.
On the other hand if the ISP has provided you a wireless only device you will find it very hard to setup the TC. It cannot readily join a foreign router (non-apple that is).
In this case, plug the TC directly into your mini by ethernet. And then use it without wireless. (keep the wireless for your internet connection). You might need to do a bit of fiddling .. I can give more details on how to do this setup. But I must say for now it is probably easier to put the TC away and just buy a USB drive. Faster, and much more reliable using a directly connected drive.. especially if the Mini is 2012 model with USB3 ports. But even USB2 is faster than TC.

How to extend wireless with airport express and time capsule

So, I have a time capsule & because of the thick walls in my apartment, I can barely use my ipad and iphone at night in my bedroom! (my macbookPRO stays at 3 bars however!)
I bought an airport express thinking I could plug it closer to or inside my bedroom to boost the signal - but it doesn't seem to work that way - any tips on how to set this up?
TWO ADDITIONAL Qs:
Does connecting directly to my time capsule (which i'm assuming i'd need another ethernet cable) help with the boost? (then negates the other great uses for the airport express it seems)
Isn't there a way to do the boost with the express wirelessly? I'd really love to get wireless speakers, use airplay AND be able to use my devices just two rooms away .... HELP!

Suggest that you check your setup again to make sure that the settings are correct on both the Time Capsule and AirPort Express.
Open AirPort Utility, select the Time Capsule and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Make sure that a check mark is entered next to "Allow this network to be extended".( If the box is not checked, the Time Capsule will not extend to the AirPort Express)
Click Update to save your settings and close AirPort Utility
Next, open AirPort Utility again, select the AirPort Express and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab
Settings should look like this:
Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Same name as the Time Capsule network
Check mark entered next to "Allow wireless clients"
Wireless Security = Same setting as the Time Capsule
Wireless Password = Same password as the Time Capsule network
Confirm Password
Update to save settings and close AirPort Utility
Locate the AirPort Express approximately half way between the Time Capsule and area that needs more wireless coverage. You may need to experiment on placement to find the best compomise.
Post back on your results.

IPS Modem to Vonage router to Time Capsule to Airport Express. Now I want to add a guest network.

I want to set up a guest network.
I understand that there can only be one main router and the others should be in bridge mode to set the guest network feature on the Time Capsule.
If I set the Time Capsule from bridge mode to "DHCP + NAT" then I lose my internet.
Since I think the Vonage router is set as the main router how can I swap that function with the Time Capsule or perhaps that cannot be done.
Please let me know what I should try or whether to give up.

Thanks. I understand you want to "swap" your Vonage box with your Time Capsule. That will require re-enabling the Time Capsule's DHCP and NAT as you already attempted and explained in your original post, connecting the Time Capsule directly to your modem, and installing the Vonage box "downstream" of the Time Capsule by connecting it to a Time Capsule LAN port.
I assume you using your Mac wirelessly, that you have cable Internet (as opposed to DSL, FiOS, satellite, or office / school wired LAN), and that right now everything is working including your Vonage telephone service. If any of that is not correct, stop here and let me know.
You should also print these instructions, since you will be unable to communicate with either your Mac or your phone until you are finished and everything works correctly. If all else fails you may have to begin all over again with a "hard reset" of both your Time Capsule and the Vonage box and reconfigure them completely. Any Time Machine backups already completed will not be affected though.
Then:
Power down your cable modem: unplug it from the wall receptacle.
Disconnect the Ethernet cable linking the Vonage box and the Time Capsule. Set it aside for now.
Disconnect the Ethernet cable end attached to the Vonage box's blue port, and connect it the Time Capsule's WAN port instead.
Take the cable you set aside and connect the Vonage's blue port to one of the three Time Capsule's LAN ports.
Power up your modem and wait a moment or two for it to complete its startup sequence.
On your Mac, open AirPort Utility and reconfigure your Time Capsule's Router Mode to "DCHP and NAT" as you did previously. Update and allow a moment or two for it to reset.
Verify that you can use your Mac to load web pages and that your Time Machine backups continue to occur as usual.
Should something not go as expected and you need to make changes, be absolutely certain to power down your modem before changing what you connect to it.

Unless you want to use the Vonage box's LAN (yellow) port to connect an additional wired computer or other network it's not necessary to reconfigure it as a bridge. The Vonage's router will just remain unused.
If you want to do that though, you must log in to the Vonage box's configuration web page. Its address will be assigned by your Time Capsule, sequentially: for example if your Mac's IP address is 10.0.1.2 your Vonage box might be 10.0.1.3 or something along those lines. You may have to experiment to find out what it is (see Note below). Once you find it though, you will be presented with a login page resembling the following:
Its default User Name is router and so is its password. Click Go to log in.
Once there, navigate to Basic Setup > Local Network Setup, and change DCHP Server to No as in the following:
Click Apply and you're done.
Note: just like all non-portable network devices, it makes sense to assign the Vonage box a static IP address: Basic Setup > Connect to the Internet, and change Connect Using to Static IP Address. You'll have to fill in the fields using addresses appropriate for your network.

All Mac Pro's ever made have shipped with gigabit ethernet. The last non-gigabit tower desktop Apple made was the very first generation PowerMac G4's back in 1999.
Similarly, all Time Capsules have been gigabit ethernet as well - never been one that was not.

HT4260 Airport extreme and time capsule connection order in a roaming network

I plan to create a roaming network with my current Airport Extreme as the primary device connected to the internet and the new Time Capsule as the secondary device in Bridge mode. The connection between AE and TC will be wired (ethernet). Then I plan to connect the PC that needs backing up to the Time Capsule with an ethernet cable. Apart from the PC-backup functionality, I'd like to use the Time Capsule as a central NAS-device in my network. All other wired network devices that need access to the NAS (Apple TV, Xtreamer) are currently connected to the primary Airport Extreme with ethernet cables. My question: is there any reason why I should consider reversing the setup order, i.e. making the Time Capsule the primary device connected to the internet and the Airport Extreme the secondary device? Would this have a positive or negative effect on Time Capsule functionality and performance in the network? Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Your Gen3 Extreme and all TC are gigabit.. as long as you connect with the required standard cable to have a gigabit connection between the two, there will effectively be no difference. In a home network you will struggle to saturate gigabit no matter what you do. Although the difference between the two configurations is really very small.
General rule is keep whatever is using the highest bandwidth closest and directly connected to whatever it is using.. shrug.. in this case you can follow or not.. it is more a guideline.
