Jealous Powerbook acting badly

My 17" Powerbook went out of AppleCare a month ago. 3 weeks ago, I sold my iBookG4, and bought a MacBookPro. I transfered my Powerbook to the MBP, and, after nuking and repaving, imported the iBook into the Powerbook. Faster MBP goes out on the truck, and PB stays in the office. I guess the Powerbook is jealous, because it has been acting badly. A week ago, the Airport went on the fritz. It works after restart, until it goes to sleep. Then it doesn't work any more. Three days ago, it started taking forever to restart. The little blinking icons, aternating between folder and question mark, blink for almost 2 minutes before it finally begins starting up. Yesterday, I tried to access my 250G hard disk, and neither Firewire nor Firewire 800 would work.
Anyone have any suggestion what might be causing these problems, other than jealousy?

I've solved some of the problems withthis PowerBook.I opened thestartup disk pref panel, and chose mystartup disk. that made it start up more like it is supposed to. I guess when I imported my iBook, and changed the HD name to Powerbook, it was still looking for the iBook HD. I found my 250 HD was unplugged, which is why it wouldn't work. It got enough power from the Firewire cable to light the lights, so I didn't see it was unplugged until I dug it out of the pile of cables on the desk. Plugged it in, now it works much better!
The only thing left is the Airport Extreme. It works from when it is started up until it goes to sleep, then doesn't work any more. I guess when I get my MacBookPro back, I'll take the lid off this, now that there's no warranty to mess up, and see if there is a loose connection. Maybe there is something in there I can fix. I'm still open to suggestions, but not pulling my hair out!

  • Powerbook acting strangely....help!

    Hello!
My Powerbook g4 17 has been acting strangely the past two days. It all started when I had both Safari and iPhoto open. I got the Beach ball of death and my computer froze (I had been getting the SBBOD on occasion, but never had it caused a full blown freeze before). I tried all the force quit commands and finally I had to manually shut it down. It had trouble restarting, it would chime but then it wouldn't get past the first screen with the grey apple symbol. I turned it off and let it "rest" overnight. The next day it turned on fine, but the computer's "thinking" noises sound different. More of a buzz now than the usual clicking and whirring noises. The power button also makes a strange "BEEEEOOOOooooop" noise when I turn it off, which is also new.
To make a long story short, I tried to run disc utility and it froze on me again when it finished. I had to hard start it (and again, and again, and again...)and it won't go past the first screen UNLESS I let it sit turned off for at least 5 minutes. Once I do manage to get it turned on, it acts fine for maybe a half and hour or so until it slows down (thinking gets labored) and freezes on me again.
Any ideas on what may be going on? I'm worried it's something really bad.....

    Thank you BGreg.
I have 27GB free out of my 80GB drive, so no issue there...
I tried to do the boot up with the OS X install cd witn no luck. I was on the phone with AppleCare last night for over an hour and after trying many different things, it seems I am going to have to mail it in for repairs.
Here I was hoping it'd be something simple.
And of course, I backed up as much as I could. I'm crossing my fingers!

  • Powerbook making bad squeaking sound...don't know where else to post.. hlp

    Dear Forum,
This powerbook g4 1.25 2g ram, 15" alumninum, hard drive failed 3 weeks ago, I replaced it. Now, there is a new noise coming from somewhere in there. It only starts when I am downloading something, and the graph screen on safari shows the status bar filling up indicating the progress...and it also makes this sqeaking abbrasive sound when, for example, I am in iMovie3 hd, and i use the feature far far away, which generates "star wars" like scrolling on the screen. Out from the computer comes this bad abbrasive sound. Not good.
Can someone tell me what it is?
Id like to try to fix it myself from ifixit.com.
    Thanks,

Yes using Virtual PC on your G4 PowerBook.
The new MacBooks can not run Virtual PC, however can dual boot with Windows XP SP2 and if the DOS applications can run on XP SP2 then you will be able to run them.

  • G4 Powerbook Acting Like it is in Hibernation, but really NOT

    Hi,
    I have a G4 Powerbook running 10.4.3. I have the following attachments:
    1. 30inch Apple LCD
    2. 500 GB LaCie External Drive
    Problem:
Because of my power management settings, my notebook turns the monitor off within about a minute. Over the past week, when I return to my notebook, it will come on. The light on the front of the notebook is not blinking and it acts like it is in hibernation mode, but it is not.
I tried to remove all the cables, open the top, but the screen will not come on. I ran through some disk utility diagnostics on startup and there was some minor head issues that were corrected, but my problem still exists.
Then, I started taking a look in the system log and I noticed the following:
Dec 19 23:48:15 localhost kernel[0]: AppleHWControl::start failed to read initial current value: 0xe00002d5!
Dec 19 23:48:15 localhost kernel[0]: AppleHWControl::start failed to read initial current value: 0xe00002d5!
Dec 19 23:48:15 localhost kernel[0]: AppleHWSensor::start failed to read initial sensor value! Got error e00002d5
Dec 19 23:48:15 localhost kernel[0]: AppleHWSensor::start failed to read initial sensor value! Got error e00002d5
Dec 19 23:48:15 localhost kernel[0]: AppleHWSensor::start failed to read initial sensor value! Got error e00002d5
Dec 19 23:48:15 localhost kernel[0]: AppleHWSensor::start failed to read initial sensor value! Got error e00002d5
I am not sure if this anything to do with my problems, but I am going to monitor it. I tried to cross-reference these error codes in the open source code for 10.4.3, but the closest thing that I found out was that it looks like a firewire connection. Firewire is what I used to connect that 500Gb hdd. I just started noticing the problems right about the time I got the hdd, but since the LaCie product is something that apple endorses, I wouldn't think there would be a problem.
Does anyone have any suggestions on the error codes or this problem ?
    Thannks,
    Jason

  • Can PowerBook act as a host?

Currently, I connect my Powerbook to a cable modem for internet access.
Since my parent purchased a MacBook, I wonder if there is a way to set my Powerbook as a host and let the MacBook shares my internet access thru wireless (Airport?)

Wow... first of all, thanks for responding as soon... I didn't know until just now.
So you meant, buy a wireless router and connect it to the cable modem, right? I was hoping not to spend this money if the pB can share its access directly with just one MacBook.
I thought it's possible since my PSP got connected to internet thru this PB wirelessly.

  • Powerbook g4 bad fuse on the logicboard, Battery not charging

Ive seen many people with this same problem on different forums and havent found any answer on how to fix this.
The main problem is that the Powerbook only works with the AC adapter, and the battery is detected on the PC but is not charging. Even if you change the battery for a new one, it wont work.
The main problem is a fuse located on the logic board.Exactly this one:
    http://ie.farnell.com/productimages/farnell/standard/1651771-40.jpg
Its a littelfuse 5a SMD. Here i put a pic of my board. The red boxes are where the fuse are located. So there must be something wrong on the logic board.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Can you tell us something about what was happening before you go to this point? In other words, was everything working normally, or did you notice anything unusual?
BGreg has suggested what you need to do to recover you boot volume. In the absence of an install disk or Disk Warrior I suggest you try starting up in Safe Mode. If that does not work, try the suggestion of the second poster using the method in Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck.
Please do post back with an update or further questions or comments.

  • TIME MACHINE ACTING BADLY WITH THIRD iMAC

I am on my third iMac now and TM still acting strange. First iMac and using Time Machine when looking through Mail, TM would lock up the computer. A hard reboot was necessary to get things working again.
Second iMac just would shut down, power off all by itself. TM and two mail accounts did not function properly. Going to the second Mail Account I was unable to navigate forward and backwards in Time. Going back to first Mail Account would be fine, but when switching to second Mail Account, TM would stop going forward or back.
Third iMac I get the same results with TM, that is, when navigating two mail accounts TM would get stuck and not move forward or back in time. Is there a chance TM doesn't like having two accounts to look through? Anyone else have an issue like this with their iMac? My external drive is a Lacie and is formatted for Guid.

  • Safari acting badly

All sorts of bad behavior.  Google search page loads incorrectly.  live links do not respond to mouse clicks. Autofill inop.  and more.
What gives?  First time for me, always solid in past.

Texas has no provision to secede form the Union.  It does, however, have a provision to split into 4 states.  Texas is a good state.  Has a good economy and a wide breadth of industries.
Try removing Safari Preferences which resides in the folder:
    "/Users/<your user name>/Library/Preferences/"
The file you are looking for is:
    com.apple.Safari.plist
quit Safari and move to the desktop
    restart safari.
If things are working well, then trash the file you moved to the desktop

  • DW acting badly-Tossing prefs not helping

Dreamweaver CS3 on a Mac Mini OS 10.5.6.
Just yesterday, I was updating my website by switching out old images with new ones. But today, DW isn't letting me do it.
I open a page (existing or new) and go to common>Image and go though the whole place image process. Save and test in Firefox, Opera and Safari. The Image is not placed with only browsers the missing image symbol showing.  I've been using DW since the Macromedia days so, I'm certain I'm doing it right...
    This worked yesterday!
When Photoshop or Painter starts to misbehave, I trash the preferences and all is well. This is not working with DW this time.
Here's that path to the preferences I used:
    Hard drive>my mac>Library>Preferences>Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 Prefs
I then toss the DW prefs and restart the app. It's not working.
    Ideas? Not the right prefs?
If I need to uninstall/install, is there a way to save all my settings?
    Thanks In advance

Well, it's been an interesting day:(
I did save the settings (thanks for that!) then uninstalled DW using the application disk uninstall feature then started ti install DW. I was instructed to install the 'Adobe ExtendScript Toolkit 2'(?). So I inserted the second disk  but, 'Adobe ExtendScript Toolkit 2' apparently isn't on that disk ether...
So... I attached my mac laptop to my mini and transfered DW over but, as you can guess, it didn't work. The s/n wasn't accepted. For anti-pirating reasons  I guess.
So... I went back and tried to uninstall the DW copy from my laptop and now I'm getting a set-up error box. 'Setup has encountered an error and cannot continue. Contact Adobe Customer Support for Assistance'.
What's the next step? Is there a way to fix this without spending time on the phone?
    Thanks

  • Powerbook Acting Up - Superdrive Assistance Needed!

    Hey guys,
I upgraded my combo drive to a 1x superdrive several months ago and initially had no problems with the upgrade. As of late, however, I have had my slot-loading drive spit out cds (regular cd-r discs and regular audio discs) no less than a few seconds after insertion. It almost seems as if the drive is indicating that it cannot read the discs, but I even tried regular audio cds, so something seems to definitely be not working properly.
Restarting the computer/shutting down seemed to help temporarily. I tried to get the drive to accept an audio cd once, which it did, and then tried a second time, and it went back to spitting out the cd. Is there any way to "reset" the superdrive or check to see that it is fully functioning? [ie: scanning it in utilities?] Is there a firmware update that I am missing? Any and all suggestions/feedback welcome.
    Thanks a bunch guys,
    Mr. Sofer

Mr Sofer, Welcome to the discussions,
I am not positive this will fix your problem, but one thing I am sure of it will improve the perfomance of your computer.
I burn a ton of media, DVD's mostly, and some CD's when I have used the burner a lot it seems that all the programing that I burn stores on the hard drive and at some point the computer becomes sluggish and then it will either give an error message or just spits them back out or will stop in the middle of playing. The fix I found to this is this,
1st You can use the Dsk Utility, and Verify and Repair Permissions. If you choose not to use the utility furnished in your Operating System, I would for sure use one in these Utilitys.
Download All 3 and run them and then restart your computer and see if it helps.
    1st is Macjanitor.

    And 3rd is ONYX

All 3 of these are free and I feel are a must to keep my machine running at peek performance.

  • Use printer connected to PowerBook (w/AirPort) from a PC without a router?

Thanks in advance for any help, and forgive me if this has been answered. A search turned up no satisfactory results.
Is it possible to print wirelessly to a printer that is connected to my AirPort-equipped PowerBook from a PC without a router in the mix?
Basically, can the PowerBook act as an access point (is that the correct term?) so that I can connect to it wirelessly from a PC and use its USB printer? Neither machine will be connected to the Internet, and a router will not be used.

    Hi,
If I understand this correctly, you wish to set up an ad hoc (wireless peer-to-peer) network between a PC and a Mac. A USB printer will be connected to the Mac. The Mac is running Mac OS. The printer is to be shared.
The level of complication is high, since two platforms are involved, since it is a USB local printer (not a network printer), and since neither a print server nor a router (base station) will be used.
It would probably not be a bad idea to have a look at, or post a question in, the Windows Compatibility forum or one of the AirPort fora instead. Also, this web page might be of interest regarding general setup issues.
Additionally, a remote control application could possibly offer a solution.

  • Powerbook 100

    Hi
Like Gail I have two powerbook 100's both are doing the same thing. They both will start to boot up . I can hear the hard drive spin up , it then make a series of clicks pauses then start to click again . After a couple time it stops and you get the question mard disk . If you boot form a floppy it comes boot all the way up . I have tried to run the hd setup program but it reports that it cant find the information for the hd . I have tried 3 different drives in both of the 100's. I also have done both of the resets and replaced the batteries ( the big one and the 3 smaller ones )to no avai.
I have a hard time thinking that both of these powerbooks are bad seeing how they were working a couple years ago when I put they away.I'm looking for any ideas or help .
    Joe

    Joe,
The drive can be externally attached to a SCSI port, but you would need a suitable 2.5" connector and a power supply. There were portable enclosures (with DB-25F output) available for such drives; typically with said hard drive connector, a SCSI ID switch and a power jack (an external supply provided 5 V DC).
You could make a Network Access floppy from the download here, if you have access to another older Mac (with a built-in floppy drive). This floppy is bootable. It can be modified to hold Apple HD SC Setup 7.3.5 (here) or Drive Setup 1.7.3 (here).
You could also use the Network Access floppy unmodified as intended. A Mac printer cable MiniDIN-8M to MiniDIN-8M can be connected between one of your PowerBook computers and the other machine (the Printer Port). If you boot the PB 100 (with its non-working hard drive installed) from the Network Access disk, you could then use programs (e.g., various disk utilities) placed on the hard disk of the other computer, and should thus be able to run further tests. Alternatively, you could of course use the other SCSI drive that you mentioned above for all this.

  • Security Update 2009-001: my powerbook g4 is in a restart loop

When I tried to install the Safari 4 beta browser I got a message that I needed to install Security Update 2009-001 first. I was surprised because I get updated automatically but nonetheless I selected "Software Update" from the Apple menu and got the "new software for your computer message".
I clicked install. After a minutes m powerbook shutdown and started back up. I heard the familiar gong, got the grey screen and progress indicator. Then after 5-6 minutes my powerbook restarted. It then went through this process again and again. After the 8th time I tried powering off, taking out the battery and letting it sit. Same result. Tried starting up in safe mode. The powebook would not boot up in safe mode. I tried connecting it to another computer using firewire ad T at start up to make the powerbook act like a firewire drive. Tried instructions on macfixit to remove plist and kernal files this way. Disconnected, powered down. Same result.
If I cannot get it into safe mode and removing possibility corrupted files does not work, what the heck can I do?
I am going to turn it off, unplug, take out battery and let sit over night and see if it works.
Short of that, I use Time Machine and I am thinking of just formatting the hard drive and backing up from the last Time Machine back up (before the update).
    Any better ideas?
    Thanks

    Mediablogger,
See if you can boot from your Leopard install cd that came with your computer. If you can, you might be able to repair the disk...
After the computer boots from the CD select File>Disk Utility. From there select Repair Disk, and hope for the best...
If Repair Disk finds errors, and then says "Disk not Repaired" just keep running it again until you get a "disk repaired" message (it only fixes one problem per run).
    Hope this helps,
    Bob

  • My computer may be invaded by having opened up a bad e-mail.  What can i do do debug my imac.  Thank you

My friend aleted me his computer was "spammed" and to not open up a certain e-mail.  Sadly i did and now my IMAC leopard is acting badly.  Can i get this straightened out myself without taking it in?  Thank you

Your computer is very secure however using a little common sense is the best protection. Never download and install anything unless you know what it is first or if it comes from a trusted source. If you get a popup on your screen telling you to download load something then be very suspicious and research what is being suggested.
As for the spinning beach ball that can be caused by many things, the most common is the computer needs a RAM upgrade or you have some process that dominating the computer's CPU. You can run Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) and check to see how much FREE RAM it has (click the System Memory tab) and also look in the column that lists the processes being run to see if anything is using a lot of %CPU. As a rule of thumb if the FREE RAM is 500MB or less then you would probably benefit by upgrading the RAM. If you see a process using a large %CPU then quit the process.

  • DW acting like it's a demo version (it's not)

I've been having problems sense May with adding (see 'DW acting badly-Tossing prefs not helping') and I have followed instructions from this forum, Adobe on line help and finally, the folks at the Apple store.
To avoid a long update, this is where I stand:
I can not place images in DW.
I just did a archive install on my Mini (OS 10.5) at the urging of Adobe and then reinstalled all of the CS3 apps that I legally own. Still, all of them are working fine except DW where I still am not able to place images...
As I have projects piling up, I moved my files to my Mac laptop (OS 10.4) and fired up DW and the same thing is happening there too! I'm beginning to thing it's acting like it's a demo and is now unusable. As I mentioned, all the other CS3 apps that are on the same install disk are working fine.
This echos a problem I had with Photoshop last year and after hours and hours of phone help with Adobe, they emailed me a link so I could download a working version of PS (and the whole CS3 design collection). They decided that my disk went bad somehow. But last week, after the archive install, PS loaded just fine and  DW is still acting up.
What does this look like to you?

You're so right! There are (///) in url.
I have no idea how this could have happened but, it did. How do I fix this? I guess I need to go into manage sites>edit and redefine the root folder?

What I'm doing is opening a new (or existing page), placing the cursor
within the page and go to the common tab and chose image. I then
navigate to an image and click though the Image Tag Accessibility
Attributes window (not filling in any field) and place the image. The
image shows up on the page just fine but, when I go to test it in Firefox (and Safari), I get a missing image icon.
    OK, a few thoughts.
    1. Make SURE you are navigating to an image that exists within your defined site folders (you have defined a site, right?). If you see file:/// anywhere in your source, then you are not working with files in the folders as defined.
    2. If the link is set to site-root relative (link looks like <img src="/images/img.png">), you may need to turn on Preview with Temporary Files in the preferences - if you are experiencing this problem in Preview (F12), that is.
    3. If you are simply opening the file in FF, then use document-relative links instead. The links would look like <img src="images/img.png"> or <img src="../images/img.png">
