Jerky F4V playback in IE -- Firefox seems OK.

Seen multiple threads for “jerky playback in flash”, but nothing posted seems to help.
I’ve tried in the Flash forum, but No Joy.
6 different videos – all with same results all using Adobe presets.
Using the F4v/FLV .5 Mbs export preset from PP to media encoder
All F4V/FLV exports show “jerky” playback in flash/IE, but fine in FireFox  (so sounds like a Flash player or IE issue –right, but this is one of the largest combos on the net, so I figure someone has gotten this to work).
Audio is OK.
Same behavior on 2 different systems (Win7 x64 with lots of RAM and good CPU)
Systems all have latest updates, etc, etc. CPU/memory is low usage.
Hardware and systems are high-end and well-tuned.
Using VBR 1pass and CBR target in the 0.50 Mbs range.
Have used a variety of export presets in the 0.4 to 1.5 Mbs – all with same results.  So my test set exceeds 20 exports – all with identical behavior.
Internet connection is 20Mbs to desktop.
Locally-hosted F4Vs play OK.
Hosted MOVs are downloaded and play very well.
Same behavior on 2 separate hosted ISPs for all videos.  Non-dedicated flash servers.
Uninstalled/reinstalled Flash.  Hardware acceleration on/off, AVP on/off, etc.
Any suggestions?
If folks are having success with flash, can you provide export settings in the 0.5 to 1.x Mbs range that work for you?
Since I have seen lots of “jerky” playback posts associated with Flash, is this some sort of “known issue”?
PP CS5, latest AME, latest Flash 10.x
Thanks, H

I have updated this post with more detailed information to hopefully get some help.
I have read multiple posts/threads on “jerky playback in flash”, but nothing posted seems to help my situation.  I have tried in the Flash and PP forums, but to date no responses.
6 different videos – all Encoded with AME and produce the same results all using the Adobe F4V (h.264 Flash) presets from PP.
Started with the F4V/Web presets (same as source at 29.97), and then adjusted the output size to reduce Mbps until I got something to work.  Tried all settings from about 1.5Mbps down to about 0.4 Mbps, but all showed the same result.
All AME encodes show “jerky” playback in flash/IE, but smooth in FireFox.  Audio is OK
The video plays smoothly for a second, then shudders for about 3 frames, then smooth, then shudders, etc.
Local playback on AMP looks fine, this bypasses the browser completely, so not really a valid test.  I have attached a MediaInfo for a sample encode below.  The HTTP code for playback is generated by DW and very simple, so I doubt it is that.
Same behavior on 2 different systems (Win7 x64).  Systems have latest updates, etc, etc. Hardware and systems are high-end and well-tuned.  CPU never exceeds 5% and memory never above 10%.
Have used a variety of export presets in the 0.4 to 1.5 Mbps – all with same results.  So my test set exceeds 20 exports – all with identical behavior.
Tried VBR 1pass and CBR.
Same behavior on 2 separate hosted ISPs and local playback. All with identical behavior, but local playback is less pronounced.  Dedicated UNIX servers with high-speed connections, but not flash servers. Internet connection is 50+Mbps to desktop – but again, local playback also shows the shuttering behavior, just not as much.
It sounds like a Flash player or IE issue, but this is one of the largest combos on the net today, so I figure someone has gotten this to work using AME.
Uninstalled/reinstalled Flash.  Hardware acceleration on/off, AVP on/off, etc.
Since I have seen so many “jerky” playback posts associated with Flash, is this some sort of “known issue”?  I know that millions use h.264/Flash and IE daily, so I must be doing something wrong.  I realize the difference between IE and Mozilla Flash, but I can’t reconcile what I am seeing to just IE.  This is not a minor playback difference, but dramatic on 2 well-tuned systems.
PP CS5, latest AME, latest Flash 10.x, etc
Does anyone have examples of h.264 Flash output that hosts OK in the 512x288 to 786x432 range on IE? Can you provide link to output and settings that got you there.
Thanks, H

  • Safari and Firefox seem to have been hijacked

Safari and Firefox seem to have been hijacked. When I type hotmail it takes me to some netgear wn2500rp genie. Help!

    Hi,
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1594
Make sure Safari is running in 32-bit mode. Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. Select 32 bit mode. Also, (in that same window) make sure Safari is NOT running in Rosetta.
If Safari still crashes, go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop. Relaunch Safari. If it's a successful launch, then that .plist file needs to be moved to the Trash.

  • Quicktime 7.5 causes jerky iMovie playback

When - oh when will Apple fix the "Jerky iMovie Playback Problem" caused by Quicktime 7.5?
I would love to see a response by somebody from the Apple Corporation, or are they
too busy with the iPhone and iPod?
    Hank

    Hiya,
and hello from London. Just a thought: you could post Apple feedback of the problems you got:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/feedback/
It might be an idea to put more technical feedback in there (e.g. open applications/utilities/console and see what happens, when QT IS actually jittery.:~/
Also compare that with what's happening in activity monitor (e.g. are the processors running unusually high, compared to other QT use? or is the memory low? or is harddrive space low?).
If this is a bug that needs fixing, by giving the technical data to apple, this can be used to issue a fix.

  • Safari is not working. Many (not all) graphics not shown, won't play video, says Flash is missing, will not respond to login or query submissions. Firefox seems OK. Help?

This seemed to happen as I was working today. Pages are not fully loading (spinning wheel on tab never stops) and most graphics don't show. Videos are not playing and game sites say I need Adobe Flash. I tried downloading Flash, but that just didn't happen either. At the same time Firefox seems fine, including loading the same games, playing video, logging in and queries.
It seems like a bug, but ProtectMac Antivirus has screened several times today with no threats found. (Also says its software is up to date as of today.)
I don't want to remove Flash if its really installed and working.
Should I uninstall and reinstall Safari?

    Hi Jonthan ...
    ProtectMac Antivirus
First, uninstall the ProtectMac Antivirus >   http://www.protectmac.com/support/faq.html#qt18
If you want to have a/v software installed on a Mac either ClamXav or Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac  Edition are far more compatible with Apple native applications such as Safari and both are free.
Then try troubleshooting Flash. The plugin you have installed now may be corrupted.
Uninstall then reinstall a new Flash plugin >  Troubleshoot Flash Player | Mac OS
Very important to uninstall the currently installed plugin first.
Now relaunch Safari. From the Safari menu bar top of your screen click Safari > Empty Cache
Now try a video and see if pages load as they should.
    And go to:   HD/Library/Internet-Plug-Ins
If you have ClickToFlash installed, that can prevent Flash content from loading.
And check to see if Safari is running in 32 bit mode. Right or control click the Safari icon in your Applications folder then click Get Info.
If the box next to:  Open in 32 bit mode  is selected, deselect, quit then relaunch Safari.
And check to make sure there's enough free space on the startup disk.   Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop.
Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.

  • In Windows 7, firefox seems to revert to the default icon (unknown as opposed to the firefox symbol) when I delete the desktop shortcut.

In Windows 7, firefox seems to revert to the default icon (unknown as opposed to the firefox symbol) when I delete the desktop shortcut. This is rather aesthetically displeasing. I can not find much help for this online.

You can try to clear the Windows icon cache.
    #Open the Task Manager (Shift+Ctrl+ESC)
#In the Process tab, right-click on the Explorer.exe process and select End Process.
#Open the file picker via "File > New Task (Run)" and click the Browse button.
#Type or Paste %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local in the File name field (AppData is a hidden folder).
#Select the file IconCache.db and use Delete in the right-click context menu to delete the file.
#After the IconCache.db has been deleted, start a new explorer.exe process via "File > New Task" to get the desktop and Taskbar back.
It is possible that the file IconCache.db is a hidden file.

  • Jerky import & playback with 10.3.9 and QT 7.0.2

Posting new topic as follow-on from prior topic. Sorry if making a hash of this, but pretty new to Discussions, Apple and iMovie!
Have tried fixes offered by David Babsky (many thx!!), but no impact. David pointed me to discussions on "Jerky" playback and I see mention of similar issue I have.
One solution seems to be to reinstall QT 6.5.2 (how do I get to that, please?? and do I need to delete QT 7.0.2 components etc?), which was suggested by John Cogdell, or possibly upgrade to Tiger and leave QT 7.0.2 alone. Should I try the QT 6.5.2 reinstall option first, then Tiger, if that doesn't fix the problem?
Steve Summers also suggested changing anything in QT Preferences - is this the place to start first?

  • F4v wont load in firefox the first time.

    Hi all!
Im not sure if this is the place to put this, but i have a problem.
I have created a swf movie file that containes the movie playback panel & a f4v video & I have uploaded them to a subfolder on my server.
The whole site has a secure connection (https), but the page that i will try to embed the movie will have a regualr connection (http).
The problem arises when i do embed this flash video in a HTML file. in IE & Chrome it works and looks great, But in firefox it doesnt.
If i clear my cache (as if i were a new visitor to the site) and enter the page, the movie isn't displayed at all...is shows "done" in the browser loading bar.
After about a minute or so (which i assume is the amount of time it takes to load the full movie), i hit refresh, and the movie appears fully loaded.
The movie is currently embeded in my homepage (via Iframe - for site protocol reasons), and if it wont load immidiatly from the first time a user enters the site, many users will miss the video (and get a blank white box in the middle of the site).
The URL for the html file is http://www.globaloption.com/PartnerSites/globaloptions_en/vid/Global9.8/videosmall.html
I really hope you can help me make sense of this problem...

you should be using a local path to

    THANKS

Thank you, to both Jim and Harm for a great series of technical posts on this thread.  Really fun to read and learn from!
A study on drive performance I did yesterday on my RAID 0 configuration may add a bit of thought to our discussion.  I evaluated disk access times, and min/max read times.  Plus did reading up about RAID controller cards.
First interesting discovery (at least for me) . . . as your video files get placed deeper on your drive, the access times increase significantly and data rates slow down.  Reports I've read explain this, and it's the simple physics of a platter spinning at a constant RPM.  The read/write head flys over the outer tracks of data much faster than the tracks near the center of the platter.  Sure enough, my read performance graph looks like a dying patient as the test approaches the inner tracks.  Not disastrous, but a good 30% drop in speed.
So first conclusion is that if the drive starts getting close to full, slowdowns can be significant.  A separate plot of access time over position showed that near the end of the drive, access times also increased.  Hard drives start by writing data to the outer edges of the platter, where the head flies fastest and data speeds are at their best.  Data gets placed closer to the middle as you fill up the drive.
Next interesting discovery -- most PC people, like me, use motherboard-based RAID controllers.  Not so good I found out.  Those are all software-based, and use a fair amount of the CPU -- my CPU overhead was around 15%.
With my RAID drive test, I also observed substantial speed "pumping", up and down, which comes from the nature of relying on the motherboard CPU which can't stay focused on just drive access.  My worst-case low points in the pumping got down to about 70 MB/s.
From the reasearch I've done, a PCI-e hardware-based RAID controller will eliminate the pumping and give you around a 20% to 30% speed increase with fairly steady read speeds.  Since my average read rate was about 110 MB/s, I could see that go upwards to 140 MB/s with a hardware-based RAID card, and hold fairly steady performance speeds.  Of course, if video files are fragmented, that'll slow things down somewhat.
I hadn't thought about the effect of multiple tracks of video jumping up the needed bandwith.  A real good point.  But I don't often go beyond 3 tracks of video.  I sometimes do more complex overlays, but then, I will need to render those because my CPU is quickly overtaxed as Jim points out.  And then with rendering, shouldn't the rendered segments be read out as a single video track?  In other words, my workflow would probably rarely involve reading off of more than 3 video tracks, and I'd think Jim's observations are very applicable to me.
So it would seem that RAID 0 gives me quite a bit of performance cushion, even with some of the other system overhead that Harm mentions.
That might change if I went to the professional formats, working with video at 4:2:2, and began moving to less compressed formats.

  • Jerky video playback after installing adobe flash player for forefox

I switched to Firefox the other day from MSIE. I immediately had problems with jerky / intermittemnt delivery of video training. I noted that one of the causes could be the adobe flash player so i uninstalled the windows one and installed the firefox plugin. This made no difference.
Can't readily see anything on Google that makes immediate sense.
    Any ideas welcome. Thank you.

I uninstalled version 13 and installed the version 12 as they suggested.  Did not work.
On my computer now I have three accounts.
    1.  Mine - Flash Player version 13 originally worked but after updating (as was suggested by onscreen prompt) it did not work with Safari.  Uninstalling and reinstalling Flash Playaer version 12 also did not work.
    2.  Second computer user can still see CNN video clips in Safari.  'This user did NOT install the update to version 13.
    3.  Guest accoount still can see CNN video clips in Safari.
Any suggestions how to get back to the original configuration on my account.  Unfortunately, I did not know about Time Machine and did not have it set up (have subsequently tried to set it up but cannot seem to be able to select a backup disk).
    Any suggestions appreciated.

  • T61p Nvidia drivers - new drivers give jerky DXVA playback

I gave another shot at installing the latest drivers for my Nvidia FX 570M, but it seems that CUDA does work well when there are other applications running in the background. When I play 1080p (or 720p)mkv files, there is a jerkyness, audio and video halts for a few seconds and then it resumes.
With the old drivers from Lenovo, everything seemed fine, but the drivers did seem to have a few bugs in the interface, or retaining the settings for increased refresh rate.
Does anyone else have these issues?

It seems like the problem is a conflict with other applications that use hardware acceleration. I disabled it in Firefox, and now video playback is fine.
I wonder if I should alert Nvidia or Mozilla about the problem. Given the problem has consistently been with newer drivers, it seems like it is Nvidia's responsibility.
