Jerky motion in iMovie '08

Hi,
Am making a short movie which consists mostly of photos but with some short videos intercut. I am also synching to a pre-recorded track. The whole movie plays perfectly until later in, about 2 minutes in, but then some photos play with a short jerk during a Ken Burns effect. All the photos from the begining have the Ken Burns but play without the jerkiness, it's just a few photos, and always the same ones.
Any suggestions or ideas that may help this would be appreciated. Thanks,
Joseph

Hi
No I don't know - but I figure.
with some short videos intercut
One very common origin to jerky/stuttering video is when video is recorded in one standard and the video or iDVD project is set in another.
iMovie'08 and 09 can handle PAL 25fps and NTSC 29.97 (one must specify and keep to this) - If mixed material one need to use another program to convert so that same standard can be kept trough out the project.
iMovie'11 can handle 24fps too.
(most probably i50 and i60 too)
So if video is recorded with a still dgital Camera (most of them can record video) the they usually records in 30fps. And if movie project is set to PAL 25fps jerkieness would be the result.
I use JES_Deinterlacer to convert my 25fps to 29.97fps when making NTSC DVDs for US relatives.

  • Jerky Motion of MP4 file

Problem: Jerky Motion of MP4 file
    Adobe Production Suite CS4
    Windows XP Pro SP3
    I have the following composition:
    Composition: 1280x720 HDV/HDTV 720 29.97 square pixel
    Layer: 4288x2848 jpeg image
    Duration: 15 seconds
    I slowly rotate the image.
In AE, it plays smoothly using the space bar.
    I render as
    Container:  MP4 file
    Codec: H.264/MPEG-4 AVC
    Size: 1280 x 720
    kbps: 6176
    Frames/s: 29.97
GSpot says the created MP4 file looks like the following:
    Codec: avc1
    Name: H.264/MPEG-4 AVC
    Container: mp42: MP4 v2 [ISO 14496-14]; - mp41: MP4 v1 [ISO 14496-1:ch13]
    Recommended Display Size: 1280 x 720
    Size: 1280 x 720
    kbps: 6176
    Frames/s: 29.97
    Pics/s: 29.97
I play the file in Adobe Media, QuickTime, and Real Players.
    The motion is very jerky.
The time progression bar moves in stops and spurts.
    I created a new MP4 file with kbps: 13,000.
    It was also jerky.
I created an AVI file, it plays smoothly.
Any idea how to correct this?
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the feedback about why H264 is jerky on my computer.
    As you suggested,
I used the FLV preset to create two FLV files.
    Codec: FLV4/VP62
    Name: Flash/On2 VP6
    kbps: 1699
    kbps: 5409
Both files work much better than the H264 MP4 file.
The kbps:1699 file is a bit jerky.
The kbps:5409 file is more jerky.
Since the files are on my hard drive, I am not sure why the kbps:5409 is jerkier since that is the rate DVDs play 720x480 movies at. I would expect the kbps:1699 to be of poorer quality because of the lower bandwith.
Just so you know where I am heading. I want to place my 1280x720P HDV/HDTV 720 29.97 square pixel AE composition on Vimeo.
Vimeo recommends "using the H.264 codec at size 1280×720, bit rate 3000-5000 kbits/sec (optimized for “download”), key frame every 30 frames (frame reordering on), using whatever frame rate you shot in. For sound, use AAC at 128kbps in stereo."
By the way, there is a HD video on Vimeo called "FIA GT3 Video Battle" which GSpot says uses
    Codec: avc1
    Name: H.264/MPEG-4 AVC
    Size: 1280 x 720
    Frames/s: 23.976
    kbps: 1803
I downloaded it to my hard drive. On my computer, it is a slightly jerky but not too bad. Why my video using the same settings is so much jerkier than this video is unclear. Of course, as you explained, I cannot expect a H.264 codec to keep up with my slower computer. It is also unclear if I should Set Key Frame Distance to 30.
Is there a white paper or book that explains in detail the tradeoffs and recommendations for both HD web based and Blue Ray situations like this? Thanks again for your help.

  • Jerky Motion on TV

    Hi
I'm shooting HDV on a Canon HV20. Exporting finished sequence as QuickTime movie using AIC works fine - plays perfectly full-screen on this Mac. Burning to DVD using iDVD for widescreen PAL playback produces very jerky motion and panning. Any ideas why this might be? Camera set on auto for all this material.

  • Gaming - jerky motion

Jerky motion on my SRMB MacBook 2.0 Ghz 2GB no other applications running in dock
It happens about every 45 seconds and has NOTHING to do with where I am in the game. It happens on most games, and at all screen resolution settings, whether I am on the Internet or not. Is there a process I can KILL to stop this? Or other simple fix? Otherwise, gaming is useless.
    Thanks for any assistance!

I found the process in question by watching Activity Monitor while playing the game. Every time there's a 0.5 second pause in the screen updates, this process is active (about every 45 seconds). There are no other processes that activate during the graphics glitch. Every time this process activates, the graphics stop for a sec, so your player dies. Gaming is useless with this process running.
    The process is: Update
Quitting it doesn't work. The OS just launches it again.
According to this list, it's "responsible for keeping disks synchronized with the file system cache, to keep data loss to a minimum in case of a crash."

  • Jerky motion on contoured moves

I have setup a countoured moves but when it reach the final point there is a fast jerky move forward and then backward that is not acceptable for my application. I'm using a 7344 and a 7356 (the same behaviour) motion controller and i have already tried to change pid and everything else. The only way to get a smooth movement is to return to the initial position (let's say 1000 steps forward and 1000 steps backward). In this case no jerky motion is done. But this is not acceptable for the application i'm developing. I have the latest firmware and sdk 6.1.3.
I really need to solve this issue. Can Someone from NI help me?

  • Slow motion and iMovie 5

I'm wanting to create a slow motion effect in iMovie 5.0.2. As we all know iMovie's slow motion effect is less than satisfactory (jerky). I've tried using JES Deinterlacer but have run into problems with it. In my research I've come across an iMovie plug-in sold by Partners in Rhyme that claims to create a smooth slow mo effect. Has any one had any experience with this plug-in and is it compatible with iMovie 5? You can see it here: http://www.partnersinrhyme.com/osx_software/TimeEffects1/TimeEffects1.shtml
    Thanks!

(I'm an Illini fan...) But, I will still answer you
That plugin is actually one of many offered by Stupendous Software
They are very reputable and it should work great with iMovie 5.

  • AVCHD Import = Jerky Motion

OK this is doing my head in, not least because it should be one of the most common and therefore simplest / most reliable workflows Apple should have ensured would work with iMovie.
I have some m2ts files from a Panasonic HD camera. They are 1080i as that's all the camera will do, with an AC3 soundtrack.
To get these into a format that iMovie can import, I'm remuxing with ffmpeg, copying the video untouched and converting the audio to alac so there's no loss of quality. The resulting files play perfectly in both VLC and crucially in Quicktime.
However when I import into iMovie and they are converted to AIC the motion becomes jerky. Single-stepping frames you can see that iMovie has duplicated frames every half second or so which makes the resulting clip completely unusable.
To see if the issue was caused by incorrect video/audio sync from the ffmpeg remux I tried a version with no audio at all ie just AVCHD video copied across, and the result is exactly the same. iMovie is destroying the video on import.
So as it stands, iMovie is of no use to me and I have no way to edit movies on the Mac.
Surely loads of people must have imported AVCHD into iMovie without this issue, so can someone tell me where I'm going wrong please, or is this really a serious bug in iMovie? I'm on the latest version BTW - (9.0.8 - 1778).

Agree with your assessment of the issue Brad and no I haven't tried to convert to AIC but I agree that's the logical next step. Issue is the best way to do so, so that iMovie will not try and optimise further and thereby recompress a second time when rendering the movie. I notice from your original pitch about BlueXFree that I should be able to use that although I didn't see that option when I tried it.
Maybe I'll be a bit more patient with your program and see if I can get it to do the conversion
Will post back how that goes......
    ----- edit ------
Yep - perfect thanks! Using BlueXFree to convert to AIC first, then doing a non-optimised import into iMovie results in a perfectly working clip. It's a bit of a pain in terms of workflow, but this is only for my existing stuff as iMovie imports correctly from the camera directly so in future I'll use camera archives rather than the camera's own software which is what created these m2ts files in the first place.
Great catch Brad - much appreciated.

  • NTSC - PAL jerky motion

    Hi,
I've converted some NTSC footage to PAL using compressor 2 and it looks great in FCP. But when I put it onto DVD and watch it back, any shots with excess motion i.e. pans etc, are very jerky, almost like they are missing frames!
Are there any filters that will get rid of this jerkyness, or anything else I can do to improve the picture quality?
    Cheers

  • Motion to imovie export setttings?

Hello...i'm new to motion and hd in general. I have an HD imovie project that i'm just doing a little title work in motion for (at least trying to)...when i export the motion project it looks really pixellated and the size also looks off. In imovie it actually looks okay but i burned a disc with idvd and it came out horrible. I'm using a sony hdr-fx1 for shoooting and imovie as i said. Could someone shed some light on what export settings i should use? Perhaps i'm setting up the motion project wrong?
    thanks.

first off if you're working with an iMovie HD project, you've got to make sure that you're using an HD project in motion as well. i would imagine that the preset for HDV(720p) should be appropriate, though i haven't tried it.
second of all, if you're burning your high-def iMovie project using iDVD, you've got to remember that your iDVD projects are going to be standard definition, not high def. iDVD is probably downsizing your HD project from 1280x720 pixels down to 720x405. in this case you'll get something that's watchable, but certainly not with the clarity of the original HD footage. going down to this standard def resolution is going to look very pixelated indeed.
so, your next question is probably going to be, "well how do i maintain the resolution of my original HD footage?" the short answer is that you're just going to have to wait! high-def DVD burners aren't widely available yet. and none of Apple's software has been updated to even burn a HD-DVD or Blue-Ray disc yet.
hope this helps to explain what you're seeing!
    best wishes,

  • Jerky motion

Trying to view motion menus in iDVD 7 gives unusable jerky display. I never had any problem with iDVD 6. Does 7 require so much more ram to operate?

You can always revert to iDVD6 if all else fails:

  • Jerky motion in titling

    Hi,
After creating a title sequence with LiveType using the World Back (PAL) template and importing the finished sequence into FCE, the spinning world motion is jerky. It's the same on a second Mac.
Is this a known problem or can anyone suggest a workaround or a solution, please?
    Many thanks,
    TonyT

    Hi(Bonjour)!
FCE HD is designed to produce mainly sequence to be viewed on TV monitor (interlaced image), your computer screen is a progessive one, so the "lines" are more obvious when you monitor on your screen computer.

  • Manipulating Photo Motion in iMovie

In iMovie '08, I am creating a slideshow since I have more control over how the end product looks versus iPhoto. In sync with some music, I want a photo to start out small in the frame ( reduced size ), and then with the beat of the music, I want to progressively "grow" the photo size over several beats to fill the entire frame. I don't really want to use a circle phase in transition or something since I want the entire frame to "grow". Does anyone know if this is possible?
    Thanks! CRL

    ahh, now I got it!
indeed: add your same still 4-5 times to project, add a KB effect to each clip and then 'cut off' some frames to create a 'jump cut'.-
... this could be better accomplished with FinalCutExpress.. in case, you like to invest 199$ for a professional edit tool ...

  • Many stills as motion in iMovie

I'm trying to import 103 photos into iMovie (shot with a very fast motor drive) and run as a short movie clip. Is there a way to import frames with a different default length? They all seem display for 5 seconds. I can manually change each, but that is so time consuming.
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Hi Louster
When you select all your photo's to import make sure the "Show Photo Settings" is turned on and you can change the bottom slide (the one with the bunny on it) to depict the length you want. You can either do it individually, or press on one of your photo's in the window, go up to edit and choose "select all", make the time change to what you want in your photo settings window, and drag your photo's to the timeline. They will all have the same time then.
