Jerky movie playback

I have searched the forum and can't find anything related to this problem, but I can't be the only one! Funny the support page only lists troubleshooting for PC's! My G4 sawtooth with an upgraded 1.2GHz processor will not play back iTunes movies right. Weirdly enough, it plays back mpeg movies fine using the VLC player. But iTunes movies stutter. They're not watchable. The requirement for using iTunes movies is a 1GHz processor and I've got that and more. Also 768MB ram and a fast ATA 100 hard drive connected to an PCI controller. Any suggestions on how to tweak iTunes for better playback, or do I need an even faster processor?

I've been having this same problem. On a 2.0 Ghz Macbook with 2 GM memory iTunes can no longer play rented movies or TV shows. (This exact system used to be able to play full screen 720p HD with no problem.) Movies will play fine for a few seconds or minutes then start becoming jerky, flashing between black and the video, and getting out of sync with the audio. Makes things unwatchable. Quitting iTunes and restarting it sometimes fixes the problem for a few moments but then it returns.

  • Jerky movie playback, but smooth on camera

I have a Panasonic PV-GS250 I bought in USA and have a great movie on the camera - pretty smooth pans and zooms for a beginner, but when imported into iMovie HD, it plays back jerkily. I'm new at this, but friends don't have same problems - although they use Windows? Film is imported into Mac as NTSC (assume 'cos camera bought in USA), but iMovie should handle all of that no problem, so why the jerkiness? I have checked the Import Perferences and Playback preferences and get no difference on Standard, or Highest! Can anybody help - or do I need to switch to Windows???!

No, you don't need to switch to Windows.
But have a look and see what other programs your running on your PB at the same time as iMovie ..movie import and playback uses a lot of resources, so turn off all unnecessary programs, and go to System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items, and turn off all unnecessary background programs, such as those which wait for incoming fax calls, those which monitor keypresses, and - also in Sys Prefs - turn off any other items you may have (..at the bottom of Preferences..) such as 'Snapz Pro' screen-monitoring/recording software.
Remove or disable any non-Apple 'codecs' you may have, such as any DVD-burning video software associated with 'Roxio' or 'Toast'.
Check that, under System Prefs>Energy Saver, you haven't ticked the "Put hard disk to sleep" box, or set any other Prefs to make the computer go to sleep or run slowly (..under 'Optimisation', set it to 'Better Performance').
Also, try going back to the iMovie Discussions index, where this topic sits, and type JERKY into the Search box at top right ..you'll see a whole load of Discussions, and suggestions about how to improve things.
Also, go to Applications>Utilities>Disk Utilities, select the name of your hard disc, and click on 'Repair Permissions', then wait for a few minutes while your Mac makes sure that all relevant files are set to their appropriate 'permissions'.
A good way to separate your movie import/playback from everything else which your PB is doing, is to buy an external FireWire hard disc (minimum speed 5400rpm, or - better still - 7200rpm), plug it in, and use that for storing movie footage. Then if your PB has some internal 'housekeeping' to do (..indexing files, keeping track of things, writing and erasing temporary files..) it doesn't interrupt the movie playback, as it's using the internal disc for its own things, and just grabbing the footage off the external disc without its being interrupted.
Oh, by the way: Welcome to iMovie Discussions!
Oh, and other people may suggest which is the appropriate version of QuickTime to be using (..I can't remember which is best with 10.3.9..) as some later version(s) ..QT 7..? QT 7.0.2..? may give jerky playback, though I haven't noticed that myself..

  • Jerky movie finished now in Keynote '08

Does anybody know if the problem with playing a quicktime movie (jerky playing) has been solved?

Any more info on movie playback in Keynote '08? I play a lot of .mpgs in Keynote for scientific presentations. I purchased '08 because it gives the option of "click to play" rather than playing the movie on slide advance. Now my movies that still play great in Key '06 play okay in '08, except the last frame always delays, so there is a Jerk at the end of every movie. Setting the stop to an earlier frame doesn't change the problem, just the last frame it ends on with a Jerk. Movie size (2-10 Megs) or duration (10-20 seconds) also seem irrelevent. Looks like I either go back to Key '06 or to Powerpoint. Neither option is very satisfying.

  • ITunes movie playback, audio and video not in sync after upgrade to Mountain Lion

After upgrading to Mountain Lion I have problems with iTunes movie playback, and the audio/video at times stalls/delays, or skips a few seconds, or even gets out of sync.  I feared this problem was isolated to my machine until I saw an article online: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57489874-263/sound-stuttering-after-mountai n-lion-installation/.  I have 2011 iMac 27" with 16G RAM and am running the latest iTunes and Mac OS X software, and shutting down extra programs doesn't help.  Please let me know of any solution.

I also have this problem, and some videos will no longer play in iTunes.
I get a message that this video is not compatible with this version of iTunes. I have to open the video in Quicktime to watch it.
Unacceptable! This hardware and software is too expensive to have these performance issues.

  • Movie playback issues

My movies are having playback issues again. Default settings are 44.1kHz  16bps  720p HD.
    Operating System: Windows 8
    Itunes Version 12.1.0
The issue is the sound goes in the beginning of each film. I have a computer which is two years old and yet there seems to be a recurring problem with movie playback.

I think it depends on which version of iTunes you are using. I had the same problem with digital copy movies when I loaded the 64bit version of iTunes 8.1, iTunes64setup.exe, on a Vista machine. Once I deleted that version and loaded the 32bit version of iTunes 8.1, iTunessetup.exe, I was able to view the movie in iTunes AND download it to my iTouch.

  • Apple TV 2 - Not synching correctly during movie playback

    Hi all,
Recently bought the new Apple TV and have set it up fine. During some movies playback I notice the picture starts to jerk and then the sound is about 1-2 seconds ahead of the picture. To rectify this I have to pause the video, then play. When I pause, I can see the video playing catchup to whichever point in the sound I paused it at.
Is anyone else having this issue? Or does anyone know what the cause of this issue is?
The movie plays fine on my iMac with no synching issues. Im assuming its because my iMac is running and using its processors at that given moment. Some of my movies are MKV files encoded to MP4 via Handbrake.
Some help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

It could well be because your Mac is heavy on resource usage running handbrake which will use as much CPU power as is available to do the job.
Having said that I've seen this occasionally with ATV1 and ATV2, and recently I've wondered if it's iTunes doing something else eg automatically downloading a subscription podcast, and effectively freezing to other processes like AppleTV streaming as it saves a podcast to disc.
The other obvious candidate is the network not quite keeping up with streaming demands and running slightly behind.
Try playback without Handbrake or other intensive processes running - does it behave better?

  • Google Earth Jerky Movement

I have the latest version of Google Earth 6 (6.0.2.2074) and am extremely disappointed at the choppy / jerky movement I am seeing.  I have a mid 2010 15" MacBook Pro Intel Core i7 2.66 GHz with NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512MB GPU.  My internet speed should be adequate at 8MB.
I have tried downloading earlier versions of Google Earth, 4 and 5 but these have the same issue on my machine. I've tried disabling all of the layers and turning off effects in the Google preferences panel.  I've also tried using a smaller window.  The jerky / choppy movement is always present.
While Google Earth is very stable and so far has never quit on me - this glitch is very irksome.
Is this 'normal' for Google earth on a MacBook Pro?

The problem is not flash related.
I booted into my XP partition and found the performance to be exactly the same.  So, it's either the case that the hardware of my MacBook isn't up to the job - or Google Earth just does not produce smooth flowing graphics.
I may take a trip to the Apple Store and try out Google Earth on some other 'desktop' Macs.

  • Movie playback madness....?

    Hi gang...
I want to create a .swf that is 1080p.
There are 6 .f4v movies (each 320 * 1080) playing at the same time...
Can flash player handle this?  I understand that flash player runs on the CPU and not the graphics card?   So do i just need to get a monster pc....
or is this movie playback madness...!

My Apple TV stops and returns to main menu during movie playback and photo slide show via homesharing. I have a second Apple TV in another room that works fine.

Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel.

  • Quicktime 7.5 causes jerky iMovie playback

When - oh when will Apple fix the "Jerky iMovie Playback Problem" caused by Quicktime 7.5?
I would love to see a response by somebody from the Apple Corporation, or are they
too busy with the iPhone and iPod?
    Hank

    Hiya,
and hello from London. Just a thought: you could post Apple feedback of the problems you got:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/feedback/
It might be an idea to put more technical feedback in there (e.g. open applications/utilities/console and see what happens, when QT IS actually jittery.:~/
Also compare that with what's happening in activity monitor (e.g. are the processors running unusually high, compared to other QT use? or is the memory low? or is harddrive space low?).
If this is a bug that needs fixing, by giving the technical data to apple, this can be used to issue a fix.

  • Toshiba L4353 39" - USB Movie Playback Problem

    Hi,
I recently bought a Toshiba L4353 39" smart tv, the usb playback does work but i keep having this really annoying problem,
basically i'm watching a movie file and everything is fine and then for no reason the playback of the file stops and i'm back at the my content screen, this has happened on multiple films and have tried a few different HDD so i can only assume it's the TV, help?
    Thanks, Martin

Did you test the movie playback using an USB flash memory stick or just USB HDD?
Does this issue appear playing movies supporting different file format?
In the [user manual page 89|http://www.toshiba-om.net/LCD/PDF/English/L4353-323950-English.pdf] you can find information about the file compatibility
Please check if the movie files are encoded properly and use the supported video and audio codec

  • Question: Apple TV Movie playback freezes very briefly but frequently

Last night I rented a couple of HD movies from iTunes on my 160GB Apple TV and watched them. During playback there were quite a few very brief instants of the picture freezing during movie playback. It's the kind of thing some people may not notice (I don't think my wife noticed), but it got to be kind of annoying to me, to the point where I was anticipating it to happen again instead of enjoying the movie!
One of the movies was about 80% downloaded when I started to watch it, although it said it was "Ready to Play." Also, the hard drive on my Apple TV is about 3/4 full with music.
Anyone have any idea why this would be happening and is there anything I can do to fix the problem?

Thank you for your response. Again, it was relatively minuscule, but just noticeable enough. I will reboot it.
Has this been a noted problem with other users of the old unit?
I've seen very bried video stutters and audio dropouts from time to time.
Another possibility is the encoding but generally it's not that - if you rewind and replay usually it plays ok 2nd time around - if encoding of video was to blame it would always be the same.
I am considering grabbing a new unit in the future. Has Apple noted that the new Apple TV will have "smoother playback" relative to the old unit, or something like that?
Not specifically, it's just a more powerful chip in it than previously - the old AppleTV was probably pushing the limits with the available hardware.
    However, from:
    http://www.apple.com/uk/appletv/
    this might be a hint:
    "All streaming. No hassle.
Everything you want to watch — films, TV programmes, photos and more — streams wirelessly to Apple TV. That way you don’t have to worry about managing storage or syncing to your iTunes library. HD film rentals play over the Internet to your widescreen TV, while music, photos and TV programmes stream from your computer. Either way, all you have to do is click and play. Since Apple TV features a powerful A4 processor, it streams everything effortlessly, without frozen screens or stutters. Video looks crisp and clear. And just like watching a DVD, you can fast-forward through opening credits, pause for a popcorn break or replay a hilarious scene until you memorise every line."

  • Running clip in reverse produces jerky movement

I have a "Compression — None" sequence that eventually ends up encoded for DVD. I have a couple of clips that are retimed. Some of them look fine, and others have jerky movement on the final DVD. In another case, I have a person running into frame and then I copy that clip and reverse it so the net effect is that he runs into the frame and then runs out backwards. No retiming was done to that particular clip. On the resulting DVD, he runs in fine, but when he runs out (reversed in the Motion tab, the motion is jerky.
    Any ideas what's going on?

Playing reversed clips correctly is a non-trivial problem and FCP's reversing function is very simplistic.
For a more elegant implementation check out Graeme Nattress's G-Reverser. It can be found on his website: www.nattress.com in the free section.
    Good luck,

  • Booklet crashing during fullscreen movie playback

My Nokia 3G Booklet crashes during fullscreen movie playback, usually after 30 minutes. I'm using the booklet to play to a LCD screen @ 1024 x 768 via the HDMI output. The movies aren't even HD, just 600-700MB Avi files. I'm using Windows Media Player version 12.0.7600.16415. Anybody else have this problem? The Booklet gets pretty hot playing movies too.

About the temperature you should not worry to much, I would suggest you just to try another player, such as GOM Player, and to see if you have same issue, also If you could submit some logs with the latest Error Logs from your system, so that we can check if there is a Kernel Power issue or it might be related to overheating of your CPU. I had seen full movies over HDMI and no issue with it. I guess might be some software issue.
