Jerky playback - even after render

Hi There
I recently animated a clip based on the 20th Century Fox intro, and then imported the clips into Final Cut Express to touch it up and render it out. When viewing it in FCE it appeared to skip a frame or so every 50 frames. I figured this was just something happening within the application, and that when I exported it to a QuickTime Movie, it still did the same thing.
Any ideas on why this might be happening, and how to solve it? The problem is definitely arising from FCE, not the animation software. If it would help, here's the clip here that was exported from FCE. http://dominomf.com/smcfiles/Cuby__20th%20Century%20Sheep44.mov (.mov 2.1 MB)
Cheers
Cuby

Thanks for the comment. The reason I've used a frame rate of 26fps is because the DVD I used to watch the original 20th Century Fox clip had a frame rate of 26fps, and doing the same thing in 'Blender' allowed me to get my parody as close as possible to the original, as far as timing goes.
Do you think if I re-rendered the clip from Blender as a DV-PAL format, this would make any difference?
The clip linked to in my first post was going to be the finished product, so that is why I would like to get rid of this jerky playback.
Thanks again

  • Jerky playback even on RAID 0

Hopefully someone has a solution to this irritation!
I am running Premiere Pro CS5 on a Dual Xeon 2.4Ghz, Windows 7 64bit with 24 GB of RAM and an Nvidia Quadro 40000. It is a new system with barely anything but CS5 installed.
I render out PSD image sequences from After Effects and when I play them back on Premiere's timeline, 720p sequences can just about play smoothly however 1080p sequences stutter consistently.
To resolve this issue I have bought an extra 2 WD Velociraptor 10000rpm drives and now have 3 of these drives striped as a single volume in a Raid 0 configuration. I've tested the Max Read of this new volume and I can get 326 MB/s out of it so no problems there.
CS5 is installed on my system C drive. The footage and Adobe cache files are stored on the RAID 0 volume and the Premiere project is saved on an external eSata drive. I have Mercury Playback GPU Acceleration selected in Premiere, I have the latest Quadro 4000 driver installed, I dragged the imported footage onto the New Item icon in Premiere so it matches the sequence settings. Reducing the playback resolution with Premiere makes no difference whatsoever.
It is so frustrating that the jerky playback is still happening. It is happening with footage shot on a Red also. The only possibilities I can possibly think of now are that there is some magic unit size I should use when creating the RAID volume, or whether AVG is somehow interfering, or if there is some feature on Windows 7 that I am not aware of that is doing things with the drives.
Does anyone have any thoughts on how to resolve this?

Don't expect image sequences to play back realtime; they won't.  Actually, that's not entirely true; if your I/O subsystem can produce very high transfer rates (which it sounds like yours can, at 300MB/s) then you might be able to if your image sequences are UNcompressed TIFF.  Any other compressed format (compressed/LZW TIFF, PNG, PSD) is not optimized for video playback and you're going to get stuttering.  You proved this yourself by rendering to an uncompressed .AVI file which you said played back perfectly.
    Your options are:
Render your sequences to uncompressed .avi
Render your sequences to a lightly-compressed format like Cineform (only slightly lossy)
Save your image stills in uncompressed TIFF
Or, you could just live with the stuttering -- remember, it's a preview issue only, your final mastered output file will be flawless.  If you simply MUST have realtime playback of what you already have because you're trying to time/edit a sensitive part, adjust the work bar to cover just that section and then render the section.  It will render to an intermediate format for preview which will play back realtime.
PS: Ignore this hard drive reformatting talk -- If you're seeing rates of 300MB/s out of your RAID-0 then you're hitting the maximum transfer rate of SATA 3 (which is great).  The problem isn't your RAID-0.

  • Punctuation will not show up even after render

I'm trying to add punctuation (like "." and "?") to my projects but it will not show up in the project and even after I render the movie. Can anyone help me fix this???

There's no good reason that a properly made typeface should not work.
What typeface are you using? There are a few, mostly obscure typefaces that don't have all characters present. In that case, missing characters will be replaced by a box. Is that what you are seeing?
You can confirm the exact contents by looking at the typeface in FontBook, with the View mode set to "Repetoire".
What version of LiveType? If you are using LiveType for a Final Cut project, there's no need to render a movie if your LiveType is version 1.5 or newer. Justy import the project file -it can be treated exactly as if it were a video clip

  • Very slow editing, playback sluggy even after render ...

I working on a movie, footage is mostly 1080p 50 fr. For the moment the movielenght on the timeline  is only 8 minutes and editing is becoming so hard because of the slowness of some tasks...
    I explain:
    1) At start up loading this latest project is slow
    2) Media asset pannel: thumbnails of footage is loading very slow when you go to another folder
    3) Pre-viewing of (a part of) the footage already added to the timeline (expertmode) is sluggy, but sometimes even when pre-rendering with the renderbutton is done (the render markers are correct placed) !
Also a crash op PE sometimes happens (but not so frequent)
Final rendering to a format (dvd, mp4 etc) works well but ofcourse it's difficult to make a good movie if pre-viewing of the timelinefootage is not working well ...
So my question is if I replace my internal (ram) memory in my pc from 8 GB to 16 GB, would this fix all this 3 problems ?
I have only 2 memory banks, now with 2x4 gb so I would have to buy 2x8 that's more than 100 euro (more than PE itselfs thus ...).
My pc works well for a recent game like Far Cry 3 so I don't need the memory for other programs ... So I want to be shure if this will fix it.
Finally, my config: PC has a small ssd with win 7 home premium and PE 11 dutch, all other data on traditional HD, separate ghraphics card:

What is the "normal way" is not what you need to do for Premiere Elements... the program will not ask you for your admin password, it will simply fail
This note is for a different program, but the steps are the same
    Run as Administrator http://forums.adobe.com/thread/969395
That's almost the same as right-click and runas admin, the only difference is that you don't have to right-click. The problem with this solution I mentioned above already:
windows acts than like you are the admin and the admin documentsfolderlocations is the standard instead of yours folderlocations (so all your footage, pictures and all data you want to use in your project should be than in the admin documentsfolders instead of your own user folder ....
Than it's better to change the useraccountpermission in admin, that's what I did now. So I'm working with an account with full adminrights now. That's not very safe but I want to give it a try for the time of the project-in-use . I've updated also the graphic and audio drivers.
    I've also disabled temporary AV.
All this didn't change anything for loading the thumbnails when you open a project. It still takes minutes to load and the first time after startup opening a subfolder in the assetspanel also takes again minutes (only the first time after startup, if you later go back in that subfolder thumbnails are showed almost directly).
Play-back of timeline seems almost ok now, but this was already yesterday the case (since the scratchlocations didn't change anymore)
In the manual I read that it is advised to defrag the scratchlocations from time to time. But win vista/7/8 have auto defrag ... ?

  • Premiere Pro CC video playback gone after render

    Hi all,
I'm having a playback issue. Premiere CC is running smoothly at first, but the moment I render effects I lose video playback. I can still hear audio, but no video. I only regain video after Force Quitting. Thoughts?

Have you set the previews to be sent to a slow or full disc?

  • Avchd imports into fcp 10.0.7 but choppy playback-even after using clipwrap

I am not sure where the problem may be.  I record onto the sd card (16gb sandisk extreme class 10, 45mb/s) from brand new canon m500.  Card is read in FCP X and can import but when I play back everything is choppy.
I am recording as avchd, mxp-used 60i frame rate & 30 frame both had same issue.
I tried clipwrap and that improved the first 5 seconds and then still choppy for the remainder.
When I playback the sd card inside the camera no problem-looks and sounds great.
If I look at the file on the sd card - after putting sd card in macbook pro (mid 2009-handles FCP just fine) or copying to computer it is titled as "private."  I changed the permissions.
I am also using a canon hv 20 (mini dv)-absolutely no problems with import.
Any thoughts or ideas?  I am on a deadline and losing a lot of time.

Thanks Alchroma & digibudIl--Iappreciate the quick reply.
I was able to figure out a solution very similar to the suggestion of changing the playback & optimizing media.  Here is what I set up.  With these setings, the playback of the file before import is still choppy.  After import it is still choppy until the background tasks reach 100%-next to the timecode.  Once 100% then it playsback smoothly with these settings.
I was using the internal hard drive on my macbook pro.  My workflow is to (sometimes) use the internal hard drive and then transfer to external hard drive.  Other times import to external hd.
What was interesting to me about the import process is with AVCHD, is that FCP X recognizes the file from the sd card as an avchd file.  I did not need to save the files to another folder, create an archive etc.  I tried all these with the same result as the simple import in FCP X.
One last question.  The Canon M500 can shoot at a frame speed of 60i and 30.  Is 30 lesser quality or is 60 better in some way.  I will be editing the footage in FCP X.
Thanks again for the help and I hope my experience helps others.

  • Dropped Frames msg stops playback and after render and export has gaps

I extracted video from a DVD that a client wants to use for an online video teaser. The video was extracted as an AVI and then converted to QT. I imported the QT to Final Cut Pro ver3 edited the segments. There are only 4 clips; 2 graphics and 2 quick video clips. At the beginning of each clip Final Cut puts up a dropped frames message. Everything in the sequence is rendered but it will not play through the dropped frames message. I exported the sequence to QT and when played back showed a green screen were each dissolve is . I have tried adjusting the preferences based on the Final Cut message but this does not have any affect on the outcome. Any suggestions of how to resolve the issue are welcome. I am in the process of extracting the video again to see if I can get it without dropped frames if that is where it happened. Help/advice is welcome.

When you are extracting the video from the DVD, what compression are you using? Quicktime is just a codec but the compression is important. If you are using standard def video, I like to use DVCPro50 as a compression since it is light but gives excellent quality. Also, make sure that your sequence settings match the video settings. Say that you are using 4:3, lower field, DVCPro50 compression at 29.97fps; then you will want your sequence settings to match that exactly. Since you are using FCP 3 then you will have to change these manually.

  • I still have to render in FCP even after mpeg streamclip - help

I am using some footage from an app on iPhone 4 that is 480x360.  Even after plugging this footage through Mpeg Streamclip, I cannot use it without having to render in FCP every single time I move it on the timeline.  Someone save me from killing myself, please lol.

Sorry, yes.  I did that step.  It never asks me to conform - I can just put anything in any sequence and nothing ever pops up to ask me.
Then you have this option switched of in your Preferences. Switch it on, to make it happen. And notice it will only happen on NEW sequences. (What version of FCP are you using by the way?
As long as your sequence settings don't match nothing will ever work.
    Switch it ON.
Go to User Preferences in FCP, and make sure you have this in the Editing tab:
Also, the program won't allow me to change the frame rate to that odd number.  For some reason the framerates in different clips put through Streamclip range from 69.93, 70.93, 71.93, etc - so odd.
In MPEG streamclip fill in a framerate. I think you did leave it blanco. Fill all in like this:
Click images to see them full screen. Notice the Framerate box.
    Then import that in FCP.
If you fixed the User Preferences, tehn dropping the footage into a new sequence would give you the dialog.
If that doesn't happen open the sequence settings. In the lower left corner choose Load Sequence Preset and choose the appropriate setting. It should look like this:
    Now, does that work?

  • Jerky playback

All of a sudden I'm getting jerky playback of video. I've tried the usual fixes: trash preferences, delete render files, repair permissions, repair disk, but nothing has helped. This happens in timeline and also with individual clips in the viewer, on all projects, playing from a variety of hard drives. It may be a coincidence, but it started happening today right after I played a few of the videos on the new google video site. Also, when I open the Mac Finder, the columns are slightly jerky, snaping back and forth laterally, which leads me to guess the problem might be in my system rather than in FCP, so a re-install of FCP might not help. My other programs are working normally. Any suggestions? I'm running the latest FCP 5.0.4.

Perhaps it is now time for the Harpoon solution (aka the Guinness solution in the mid and far west)
for those not in the know:
    1. turn everything off.
    2. unplug firewire cables
    3. unplug power cords
    4. get up from well worn chair
    5. walk to refrigerator
    6. open refrigerator
    7. remove bottle of Harpoon (Guinness, local micro brew, etc)
    8. pop cap
    9. pour into glass ( you AREN'T going to drink it from a bottle, are you?)
    10. sip responsibly. enjoy the moment. think pure thoughts
    11. return to kitchen. If less than 15 minutes has elapsed, have another. Otherwise, retrurn to edit room.
    12. Plug everything back together
    12. fire up external monitors, VTR, external hard drives & computer in that order.
does it work now? If yes, congratulate your self. If not, oh well, but at least you are in a much better frame of mind to begin some serious troubleshooting.
    cheerios,

  • Jerky Playback Solution

For all that have been experiencing the "jerky movie playback" or the "freeze frame syndrome" I offer this solution. I feel very confident with it as I experienced similar slow downs with my old Power Mac 8500 years ago and it was the exact same issue. At that point I had just upgraded to the most current version of Quicktime. It created a slowdown with just about every process one could think of, right down to the redraw rate on my screen (excruciatingly slow). I eventually solved the problem by downgrading back to the previous version of QT..
In any case after recently upgrading my Imac to QT 7.0x (7.03 to be exact) from 6.5.2 I began to experience the dreaded "jerky playback" to movies that had previously run very smoothly; all movies, all sizes, and with all varieties of audio clips, music and voiceovers. It was such extreme degradation that it rendered IMovie virtually unusable. From my previous experience I immediately suspected the QT upgrade. After researching everyone's discussion threads for a couple of hours I was convinced that QT 7.0x was indeed the problem and I immediately downgraded to 6.5.2, .... and voila; my movie projects returned to their old reliable selves. (and that's with a mere 5gb free space on my hard drive). So if you're experiencing "jerky playback" I strongly suggest a QT downgrade to 6.5.2. You can find the downgrade options on the Quicktime discussion board. Hope this helps you as it did me. Happy movie making.

Too bad you were so in a hurry downgrading, you didn't even perform some troubleshooting. QT 7 does have advantages, mainly H.264 support.
    I quote Karl Petersen:
”Some people have reported smoother playback after resetting QuickTime preferences. (Yes QuickTime, not iMovie.) To do that quit iMovie, open System Preferences and click on the QuickTime icon. Change something (anything). Close System Preferences. Re-launch iMovie HD.”
    I quote Steve Summers1:
”I found out that since I had done an upgrade install of Tiger, I still had old versions of QuickTime components in my /Users/~/Library/QuickTime/ folder. These had the same names as the new QuickTime 7 components which were in the /System/Library/QuickTime/ folder. QuickTime was trying to load the old components from my user library into the new QuickTime application.
”I deleted the old ones from the user location, along with some of the really old (circa 2002) non-competing components which were still in there. Then I restarted, just for good measure.
”My error messages went away, and QuickTime 7 is working as it should.”

  • Jerky playback, sluggish operations while editing

I've never had any troubles with video until now. I'm getting jerky playback on my machine, where under the previous iMovie I didn't. The playback display will freeze and skip, while the vertical red place marker pauses and jumps forward. The video doesn't have sound at this point, so I don't know if sound is skipping. I'm running on a 30" Cinema display with iMovie filling the screen.
When I take actions, such as clicking on a clip, there's a slight pause before the action happens. Scrolling through video to find the right frame to split on is very sluggish.
The type of video that I'm editing are screen movies created using Snapz Pro X (http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/snapzprox/) at 30fps, saved as MP4's highest quality. Yes, it's a lot more space, but I like to preserve as much quality as possible through the editing process.
Activity Monitor shows that I have 266MB of RAM free, so I don't believe I'm running into swapping problems. At the suggestion of an Apple Store employee, I had an authorized Apple repair place upgrade the hard drive (to 7200RPM; weeee!) a year ago since they don't do after-market upgrades.
I've used iDefrag to defrag the filesystem. I'm maxed out on RAM (2GB; first generation MBP).
What types of things should I be looking for to get smooth playback while editing?

I doubt if any card works well with CS5.
It's best to have an Adobe PC without any video signal card.
    1. Use a capture/playout PC to capture and view the images, preferably also without using any Adobe software.
    2. Then do your stuff on the Adobe PC.
    3. Transfer the mixdown of the video to your capture/playout PC, check the field order and print to tape (without Adobe) or deliver the file.
For now, Matrox MXO2 is also unusable with CS5. Boris FX makes things even worse.
My PC is extremely powerfull, so that can't be it, but it's very unstable.
Manufacturers of cards and Adobe don't work hard enough to combine their products and they just blame eachother.
It used to be quite nice semi-pro stuff for editing but forget that with any video hardware for the time being; it dropped to amateur level.
I'm done trying to fix it or waiting for solutions; I just issue warnings for other users and buyers now.

  • Jitter, stutter, or jerky playback on output

    Hi friends,
I've edited a video in Premiere Pro CS4 and it plays smoothly in the timeline. However, when I export it for DVD output, and then preview it in Encore, every minute or so, it will play one frame out of order. I don't know whether to describe this as a jitter, a stutter, or jerky playback. The preview is accurate: if I burn a DVD from Encore, the DVD will have the same glitches in playback. Again, Premiere plays everything fine.
The frame can be pulled from before or after the current point in the timeline. The first glitch occurs at 08s 15f and plays frames in the clip in this order: 1,2,3,4,17,6,7,8,9... Then it goes to 01:24:15 and partway into another clip does this:
    24s:14f
    24:15
    24:00
    24:01
    24:16
    25:02
    24:17 (back to normal)
Both of these clips with these symptoms have a lot of movement (people moving independently in the frame, plus camera movement), but there are other clips with nearly as much movement, and they do not have a problem.
The source footage is AVCHD 720 30p in a matching timeline. I do have some SD footage later in this timeline. This SD footage was captured to the computer via Firewire from a Canon Optura. It is "Scaled to Frame Size" and rendered in the timeline, and is causing zero problems. I exported using the Media Encoder. I am outputting to DVD using the MPEG2-DVD and NTSC Widescreen preset, with the aspect ratio changed from 16:9 to 4:3 and the quality set to 4.5.
I'm running Premiere Pro version 4.2.1 and Encore 4.0 on an Intel Core 2 Duo T9550 2.66 GHz with Windows 7 (64 bit), 4 GB RAM, a 5400 RPM 320 GB hard drive running the OS and the video files located on a USB 2.0 7200 RPM hard drive.
If any of you have ideas, I would be grateful.
    Thanks,
    Russ

I've been having this problem since installing Snow Leopard with QuickTime 10 way back when and it's caused me real problems with video rendering. I think it's a codec issue as my raw video files play back ok (H.264 codec), but when I export them and save as Photo jpeg or motion jpeg etc the playback has about 4 or 5 seconds of jerky playback near the beginning of the file.
I've just tried opening all my test files with QuickTime v7 and was staggered to see them all run perfectly. It is indeed very annoying.

  • I've exported my pages graphics document as a PDF file and can't seem to reduce the file size without compromising the quality of the photo's used even after choosing "best" quality.  I'm trying to send the file via e-mail but it's too big.  ??????

I am trying to e-mail a graphics pages document I made as a PDF file.  After trying to resize the file, the photo's quality is compromised (really blurry) even after choosing "Best" quality.  What am I doing wrong.  As a regular full sized file (PDF) it's fine, but when it gets reduced, it's bad and it needs to get printed from the e-mail copy I'm trying to send.  HELP! Please.

If there are a lot and/or large images the file will inevitably be large, no matter what.
You can reduce them down as far as possible by cropping and scaling them to the final size before creating the pdf. You can do this by opening the images in Preview .app and using Menu > Tools to reduce the resolution and to crop.
If you have used transparency effects eg shadow, reflection, transparency, 3D charts, OSX will by default render these at 72dpi in the pdf.
