Jerky playback in Bridge CS4
I get jerky playback of Hi Def mov files shot on my Canon 7D when playing them back through Bridge. The same movies play smoothly with no stuttering whatever on the same machine through Nero or any other player I have installed. According to my camera manual, the frame rate of these movies is 25 fps (I am in the UK using the PAL TV system) and so I set Bridge to play back at this rate (it was originally set to something like 29.77) but that made no difference. Is Bridge using a different codec or what?
Bridge uses Quicktime, so any performance issues wil lhave to be attributed to that, most likely.

Bridge CS4 - MP4 preview playback problem
In Bridge CS4 on Windows, the preview playback of MP4 files sometimes works and sometimes it does not. If not, Bridge shows only an icon in the preview pane and there is no preview start button.
I have sets of MP4 footage that work OK, but other sets can only partly be previewed. Another strange behavior of Bridge is that in some cases after changing the file's name, the program suddenly does not show the preview anymore.
Is there anyone else having the same problems?
ArmanRead this thread, especially post #19 and see if it solves your problem. http://forums.adobe.com/thread/652660?tstart=0
All MPEG files are not the same so just becasue one play does not mean they all play.
If changed files do not show up purge the cache (tools/cache/purge cache) and let it rebuild. -
Jitter, stutter, or jerky playback on output
Hi friends,
I've edited a video in Premiere Pro CS4 and it plays smoothly in the timeline. However, when I export it for DVD output, and then preview it in Encore, every minute or so, it will play one frame out of order. I don't know whether to describe this as a jitter, a stutter, or jerky playback. The preview is accurate: if I burn a DVD from Encore, the DVD will have the same glitches in playback. Again, Premiere plays everything fine.
The frame can be pulled from before or after the current point in the timeline. The first glitch occurs at 08s 15f and plays frames in the clip in this order: 1,2,3,4,17,6,7,8,9... Then it goes to 01:24:15 and partway into another clip does this:
24s:14f
24:15
24:00
24:01
24:16
25:02
24:17 (back to normal)
Both of these clips with these symptoms have a lot of movement (people moving independently in the frame, plus camera movement), but there are other clips with nearly as much movement, and they do not have a problem.
The source footage is AVCHD 720 30p in a matching timeline. I do have some SD footage later in this timeline. This SD footage was captured to the computer via Firewire from a Canon Optura. It is "Scaled to Frame Size" and rendered in the timeline, and is causing zero problems. I exported using the Media Encoder. I am outputting to DVD using the MPEG2-DVD and NTSC Widescreen preset, with the aspect ratio changed from 16:9 to 4:3 and the quality set to 4.5.
I'm running Premiere Pro version 4.2.1 and Encore 4.0 on an Intel Core 2 Duo T9550 2.66 GHz with Windows 7 (64 bit), 4 GB RAM, a 5400 RPM 320 GB hard drive running the OS and the video files located on a USB 2.0 7200 RPM hard drive.
If any of you have ideas, I would be grateful.
Thanks,
RussI've been having this problem since installing Snow Leopard with QuickTime 10 way back when and it's caused me real problems with video rendering. I think it's a codec issue as my raw video files play back ok (H.264 codec), but when I export them and save as Photo jpeg or motion jpeg etc the playback has about 4 or 5 seconds of jerky playback near the beginning of the file.
I've just tried opening all my test files with QuickTime v7 and was staggered to see them all run perfectly. It is indeed very annoying. -
I optimized my new Dell Vista PC for Premiere by doing a clean install and adding a 3rd internal drive.
When I finally got it working again I reinstalled CS4 I was delighted to find the jerky Premiere fast forward playback problem gone.
Then I installed the 4.1 update and the jerky playback returned.
I uninstalled the updated CS4 and got back to 4.0 and the problem was gone.
Is it hardware or software that caused my problem and what problems will I encounter because I am not using 4.1?Francis,
Can you do me a favour by going to the second link included in the one below, read the second part carefully and respond with the requested information, Speedfan, ProcExp, DXDIAG and the like. I find it strange that the 4.1 update would cause this.

Photoshop CS4 - File Type Associations and Bridge CS4
I have both Photoshop CS4 and Photoshop Elements 7.0 installed on my PC running Windows Vista Home Premium, I removed Photoshop CS3 after installing CS4. The issue I have is that if I look at file associations in Bridge CS4 under Preferences, none of the file types are set to Photoshop CS4, they are set to either Explorer or Photoshop Elements 7.0. The even stranger thing is also that if I try to change the associations, Photoshop CS4 is not even displayed as an option, as Photoshop Elements 7.0 always is, I have to browse in order to find it. This works, but I find it strange. Also within Windows none of the file associations are set to Photoshop CS4 after installation, I have to change them manually, again by browsing for it. I remember that in previous installs of Photoshop there was the possibility to change or use default file associtions, does CS4 have this? I guess this is not really a problem, but I find it somewhat strange that Elements 7.0 is always offered as an option but not CS4 and makes me feel it hasn't installed properly. Anyone have any ideas?
CCleaner did the trick for me too!
But I still suspect something about CS4 installer is not right.
Under CS3 I used Vista "open with">"choose program">"always use" to assiciate bridge CS3 with my canon camera raw files.. At that time it did work.
After installing CS4, I wanted to do the same with bridge CS4 but it didnt work. In the "choose program" vista menu, whatever I was doing, I couldnt select bridge CS4 it was always comming back to photoshop cs4 or bridge cs3.
After using CCleaner, I could re-associate the way I want right away.
So my word to photoshop's installer developper: please try to reproduce this issue, it should be easy, and make the installer avoid this.

Adobe Bridge CS4 will not launch ACR
I'm getting this message when trying to open an image from Bridge CS4 in ACR,
"Camera raw requires that a qualifying product has been launched at least once to enable this feature"
Any ideas how to cure this, I've downloaded the update 5.2.2., what is the correct location for this? Automatic update is just opening a box withe file in and I cant find the previous.
By the way ACR opens fine from Photoshop CS4.
Thanks
Philip JamesPhilip:
This has been discussed in the Camera Raw Forum: you may need to install the new ACR 5.2 plug-in in the correct place manually.

How to view individual art board in Bridge CS4?
Hi.
Can somebody tell me how to configure the Adobe Bridge CS4 so that it shows/views/displays individual art boards (that I can scroll thru) and NOT the whole *.ai file (which contains ALL the art boards)?
I want to preview the individual art boards as a larger image, and when they all appear together in the *.ai file, they appear smaller.
At the bottom of this page:
http://www.adobe.com/designcenter/illustrator/articles/lrvid4016_ai.html
it says;
"To view documents, open Adobe Bridge and select an Illustrator document from the Content panel. A larger view of the document appears in the Preview panel located to the right of the Content panel. When viewing an Illustrator file with multiple artboards, click the right-facing arrow below the preview to display each of the artboards."
I do not have this arrow, so therefore no option. On my bridge, all artboards appear together. How do I separate them and get the arrow he is talking about?
TIA.Interesting, looks like you also need to save the file with Create PDF Compatible File checked in the Illustrator options dialog when saving - the sample files were saved without PDF compatibility, so no individual artboard preview.
I resaved the sample file In the Cradle of the Deep with Create PDF Compatible File checked, and it shows the artboard previews individually. -
Can not open Camera Raw in Bridge CS4, or see thumbnails
MacBook Pro
OS 10.5.5
Photo Shop CS4 version 11
Camera Raw 5.2.0.65
I had another version of Camera Raw from PS3. When I bought the Canon EOS 5D Mark II, I deleted the old camera raw plug in, so as to not conflict with the new camera raw plug in.
When I open PS4, click Photoshop, click about plug in, ONLY one version of Camera Raw comes up.
In OS 10, when I click GO at the top, then applications, then Adobe Photoshop CS4, then Plug Ins, then File Formats, I get two Camera Raw icons: a blue lego like icon that says "Camera Raw.plugin" and another icon that looks like the Macintosh HD icon, but is labeled "CameraProfiles.dmg"
The problem is that I can't open files in Camera Raw when in Bridge CS4, nor can I see the little photo thumbnails either.
Can someone please help?
Desperate in NYC.The Photoshop folder is NOT the correct location for the Camera Raw plug-in, since several versions of Photoshop.
The correct location, is, as described in the readme and in the FAQ of this very forum [hint]:

Library Cache for Adobe Bridge CS4
I'm trying to clear up space on my harddrive for my macbook, and in my library folder, there is a cache folder which then has various adobe products. The Adobe Bridge CS4 folder has almost 20 GB of stuff in it. Can I get rid of this (safe to delete)? Why does it build up so much? Do I need to periodically manage this manually? Any help you can offer would be much appreciated. Thanks!
The cache folder for Bridge can grow to huge proportions because it keeps
information for all earlier cached files. After quitting Bridge you can
delete this folder (user library/caches /Adobe/Bridge CS4/cache) by dragging
this to the trash and empty bin to make space on your HD.
Restarting Bridge creates a brand new cache folder in this place but this
one is empty. Therefore you will need to recache all files you want to show
at high quality in the preview window again because with deleting this data
the cache with all previews (including the HQ preview that are mainly
responsible for the huge size) from previous cached files will also be gone.
Personally I use this method on a regular base including restarting Bridge
holding down option key to refresh preferences, this gives a fresh start for
Bridge.
I mainly use Bridge for sorting, rating and adding metadata and once the DNG
files I want have been developed they are transferred to my archive and
don't need to be in the cache file anymore
So with keep in mind that you need to recache the current files you are
using (takes some time depending on amount and size of the files you can
safely delete the current huge cache file.
Can I get rid of this (safe to delete)? Why does it build up so much? Do I
need to periodically manage this manually? -

Hello everyone,
I'm taking a class at the college about Photoshop and we are in a chapter
where we're using Bridge.
The class uses version CS4, but I'm using CS3 (the instructor gave a
thumbs-up to that prior to class). I'm in a place where I can't figure out
how to do it in CS3 and asking your help.
Here's the scenario from the textbook (CS4):
1. Open Bridge and click on the Folders tab.
--- Like in PS, there is a menu at the top that I don't have in CS3. Same
here in Bridge. After clicking the Folder tab, the book is showing a screen
where there are headings of Essentials, Filmstrip, Metadata, and Output.
2. Open the .psd file
--- that we were working with earlier in the chapter in PS
3. Click Output, then click the PDF button, then click Repeat One Photo per
Page check box, then click the Refresh Preview button.
--- I'm lost!
4. Scroll down to the Watermark section of the Output panel, click the View
PDF After Save checkbox, then Save.
--- Still lost!
Before I'm troubling you, I spent about 90 minutes looking through menus,
Adobe help, and online. Nothing!
So I'm drawing on the experience within the group to tell me if these steps
are possible in CS3 - even if they are not exactly as described above. As in
PS, sometimes the book shows how to do something and I can figure out a
work-around in CS3.
Thank you!
GilI certainly agree with John J. The user interfaces are quite different, and the Bridge Output create pdf function you are asked to do in Bridge CS4 replaced a CS3 pdf fuction performed from Photoshop CS3 called PDF Presentation.
Here's a series of CS3 steps that gets close to what your CS4 exercise looks to be calling for:
1. Launch Bridge CS3 and click on the folders tab and navigate to the folder with the pds files for your exercise. (Ignore the different layout for workspaces et al.)
2. Select one or more psd files in Bridge (thumbnails in Content panel).
3. Still in Bridge, click on Tools > Photoshop > PDF Presentation. This will launch Photoshop if it not already open and display a PDF Presentation dialog box with some choices. The top section will list Source Files, which should show the file or files you had selected in Bridge. In the bottom section Output Options select the Presentation button, and you might click to Include Filename.
4. Click Save at top of the dialog box. You should get a Save dialog box. Select filename and where to save the pdf; then you should see Photoshop's Save Adobe PDF dialog box in which, under General, you can check View PDF After Saving. -
Adobe Bridge CS4 pops error when Update Option from Help is launched
Hi All,
when i m trying to Launch the Update from the help menu of Adobe Bridge it pops-up with a error messge instead of launching update.
The error says
Adobe Bridge
Bridge is not in a position to check for updates.
The cause of the error may lie in the fact that an Internet connection can be established or that you are logged in as a user without administrator privileges.
Ok
Please help what is the probable cause for this.
I have tried disabling the updateoption by
1) Adding the Enterprise DWORD value in registry HKLM\Software\Adobe\Updater
2) Adding the "Update" "Suppress" value in "Application.XML.Override" file while installing the CS4 Suite
I am using Vista Build is the behavioural diff seen on XP n Vista
Thank YouHey
Apologies I dont think I had made myself clear.
I am trying to package Adobe Photoshop CS4 which has Adobe Bridge as a component. As per the company standards, I am suppossed to be deploying this package & installing it using silent setup. Since this is a corporate environment, they do not want any auto updates to be enabled, as well as disable all menu items related to updates. Hence I had checked through the Adobe Support Site and followed the instructions provided by using the Adobe Deployment Toolkit and supressed the updates using the tool.
Inspite of following the steps mentioned in the Deployment Kit and the guides associated with it, I was unable to supress the Updates options that reflects under Help Menu for Adobe Bridge CS4. All the other associated programs like photoshop, Extend Scripts etc the updates are disabled. The problem seems to be only with the Adobe Bridge Update.
I have also tried disabling the update option by
1) Adding the Enterprise DWORD value in registry HKLM\Software\Adobe\Updater
2) Adding the "Update" "Suppress" value in "Application.XML.Override" file while installing the CS4 Suite
Inspite of trying the above steps the update option in the menu is still enabled and when I click on the updates menu item I get the following error message.
Adobe Bridge
Bridge is not in a position to check for updates.
The cause of the error may lie in the fact that an Internet connection can be established or that you are logged in as a user without administrator privileges.
Ok
Please advise, -
Bridge CS4 and Multicore usage?
Hi everyone-
I build a new machine a few months ago and am now in the process of reshuffling the hard drives as I underestimated the size of the archive. The current specs of the machine are:
Core i7 920 (stock)
12 GB RAM
Main drive: Seagate 1.5TB 7200rpm 7200.11
Archive drive (new one): 2TB WD Green
Photoshop/Bridge CS4
One area that is particularly slow is Bridge when importing files. Most of the files are from a 1Ds MKIII, so it takes a while to generate previews. The photos get added to the slideshow fairly quickly and the thumbnails are extracted in pretty fast time as well. However, it takes a while for the full res previews to generate. For example, in a directory mix of about 7.5gig worth of 1Ds MKIII files and 1D MKII files, the machine currently takes close to 8 minutes before the previews are generated. I looked at the processor usage once and it never goes over 20%. Thinking my hard drive may be slow since it wasn't a CPU bottleneck, I installed 2 OCZ Vertex drives in a RAID0 configuration, moved the photos and cache onto that drive, but ended up seeing the same performance when the previews were generated. (the files were added to the slideshow and had the thumbnails extracted much faster however.)
My question is does Bridge support multiprocessors like the Core i7? It appears it doesn't based on my results but perhaps there is something wrong with my setup.
Thanks for any help,

Hi Chris,
How are you importing the files?
Bridge and Camera Raw both support multithreaded operations. If you are using the 'Get Photos from Camera...' menu option than you are hitting a non-threaded process. That menu item calls a new process and it is not multithreaded. It's there for mounting peripherals that otherwise don't mount via Explorer and one way for ingesting images from a camera.
If you are speaking of just browsing to files and getting cached data, what setting do you have under Preferences> Advanced? If you have Generate Monitor-Size Previews on, what size is your monitor resolution? And you are not talking about using the Loupe for 100% in the Preview panel, right?
I haven't broken down the overall size to image count; approximately how many images are we talking?
regards,
steve -
Bridge CS4 is slow, slow, slow (so is Photoshop CS4)
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 6000+ CPU, 4 GB RAM, Windows XP SP2 32-bit, ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro graphics card, two 1-TB hard disks with hundreds of GB free
With Bridge CS3 it took less than ten seconds to build the thumbnails of a folder with 85 image files. With Bridge CS4, it takes almost two minutes. Anybody having the same problem?
And where have the preference options for the thumbnail quality gone? I wanted to set the thumbnail quality to 'low' for a speed-up but I cannot. The options just aren't there in the Bridge CS4 preferences dialog ... and it takes forever building those thumbnails one after one, about one per second. And as if that wasn't bad enough already, Bridge CS4 extracts more than hundred thumbnails from only 85 raw image files, according to the text appearing in the status bar next to the spinning radar icon. There is something seriously screwed up.
And Photoshop CS4 is sluggish, too (no matter if Enable OpenGL is on or off).
So by and large, CS4 is a major disappointment. I hope for some updates REAL soon. For now, I am back to CS3. :(

There is!? :o

Nope. There is no star icon, no square, and below the workspace options there's the Content pane. Why don't you simply put the thumbnail quality options where they belong and where they always have been?
EDIT: Now I found out what Michelle was talking about: the so-called path bar. Of course I disabled that silly path bar first thing after installing Bridge CS4 so I didn't notice that the UI of one of the most essential settings is located there---and
i only
there ... even though it has nothing to do with paths. (Suggestion what to do to this UI's designer removed.)

Bridge CS4 attempt to Refresh Preview or Save output causes crash in Mac OS 10.8.2
Ever since installing Mountain Lion, I can no longer create contact sheets in Adobe Bridge CS4, which I was always able to do before installing ML. Running a bit out of options I'm afraid.
To be absolutely sure, you also did the 2.1 update for the Output Module:
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4229
Not sure the link works, sometimes they are country specific but otherwise check the downloads at Adobe.com
Did you try it in a new user account just for testing. Sometimes check and repair permissions using Apple Disk Utility (or 3th party like Cocktail) will also help.
And finally I should point you to the fact that due to a new upgrade policy from Adobe you have until 31 december this year to profit from the upgrade price for PS CS6, after the 1st of january 2013 you will have to pay the full license price for CS6.
