Jerky playback of movies only in iTunes

Have movies that play perfectly directly from Quicktime (7.1.3) and when loaded on the iPod with iTunes. But when the same file is played within iTunes (7.02) as a movie, the playback is jerky and like stop motion. The apparent frame rate is several per second. Audio playback is fine whike this happens.
Activity Monitor shows about the same level of CPU utilization in both applications Quicktime and iTunes, at around 20% on my 1.6GHz G5 Powermac.
I have Quicktime Pro if it makes a difference.
Using EyeTV (2.3.2) and playing back as a Qucktime movie also produces a clean playback.
So, the jerky playback is only in iTunes.
OS X version is 10.4.7, I'd rather not update to 10.4.8.
I've looked for preference settings and other interactions. Any suggestions?

If you search (itunes forums) you'd have found this tidbit:
I found the problem! The jerky playback in iTunes7 is caused by a conflict with the 3ivx D4 4.5.1 component found in the Library/Quicktime/ folder.
It may also be say an old DivX codec, etc. Same folder. Remove to your desktop and try again.
Also some have reported turning off the internal mic if you have one, and making sure MIDI settings are at 44.100Khz.
Give these a try.

  • Jerky playback of movie trailers within iTunes

When I try to view movie trailers within iTunes itself, the playback is jerky. It pauses and stops before resuming.
This is repeatable on two computers (Mac Pro and a Mac Mini), both running the latest version of iTunes and OS X Snow Leopard. I have a DSL connection
Yet, if I use a web browser (Safari) to go to trailers.apple.com/trailers/ , the playback is fine. Which makes me think that there is some setting within iTunes. But I cannot find any setting to change.
    Any ideas?
As soon as I post this message, I'm going to boot up in OS X Lion and see the results.

When I boot into OS X Lion, the playback is fine. I reboot into OS X Snow Leopard, no change (that is, the jerky playback continues).

  • Can I move only my iTunes movies, not my iTunes music, onto a flash drive? And, is there a program (apart from iTunes) that can play movies on MacBook Air?

I have a MacBook Air and I need to free up space...
    1) I have three series of a tv show on my itunes which are taking up loads of memory - see image - I want to move these movie files onto a Flash Drive. However I do not want to move my itunes Music onto the flash drive, only my Movies, and want to keep my music on my hard drive.
    Is this possible?
    2) I have managed to copy the movie files onto the flash drive, however when I tried to play one to check that they were loaded properly it didn't have a program that could run the file (they have copied over in a m4V format). Do the MacBook Air's not have a separate program other than itunes that can play movies? If so, is there a program I can get to solve this problem? I went onto the App Store to see if there was something I could download, but all the apps were for creating DVD's, not simply playing them.
    3) If 1. & 2. questions are solvable, will it then be safe to delete the movies from my itunes?
Thank you so much for any answers posted.

If you can play the movies in iTunes, you should be able to open the movie files using Quicktime, which should already be on your system.  If you have already transferred the files to your flash drive, open the flash drive in Finder, and hold control when you click on the movie file (or right click if you have the enabled) and select Open With Quicktime Player.  This should play the movie directly from the flash drive.
If you want to set all .m4v files to open with Quicktime by just double clicking on the file, you can follow the steps here: http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/2573/os_x_how_to_change_default_application_to_op en_file_type/

You can move the TV shows to your flash drive by dragging them from the iTunes window to your flash drive in Finder or the flash drive icon on the desktop.  When you are sure everything is transferred over to your external device, you can delete the movie from iTunes.  I recommend playing the videos from the flash drive first before deleting them in iTunes.
To delete the videos from iTunes, you can highlight them and press the delete key on your keyboard.  In the next prompt, you would want to move it to the trash so that it is deleted from your internal hard drive.
    I hope that helps!

  • Jerky playback of movies, Im getting desperate now, help !!

I have recently purchased a Sanyo Xacti digital camera which records onto an SD card in MPEG 4 format, the camera came supplied with Quick time to view the movies on.
I installed it and everything worked fine. I looked at the option of going PRO with the software because of the editing and file conversion facilities it offered, the £19.99 fee seemed reasonable also, so I did, during this quick time upgraded the player to the current version 7.1 also, since doing this my movies do not play back properly, the quality is grainy on some parts and the footage is choppy and laggy. I am really annoyed now as I expected to gain some useful features, not loose the one thing this player was intended for!!
I have searched through the forums for any clues and tried do some suggestions, i.e. running in safe mode, uninstalling QuickTime and reinstalling off the CD that came with my camera and I have upgraded my graphics drivers as well.
The thing is I downloaded the free VLC media player and that plays fine, the same movies also play ok on my editing software that came with the camera.
I spent half an hour on hold to apples Technical help line then got cut off! nice service eh and its cost £20 for this pleasue with no way of getting a refund or any help on the matter!! so it seems?
Thanks for any help you can give

"Copy one of your clips to your internal (system) HD. Open & play it in the QuickTime player. Does it play ok?
Do you have more than 1 project, and if so is this happening in all projects or just this one?"
    Hello again ~
I have done all the memory upgrades, external (new 1TB:Mac OS Extended (Journaled) / internal: Capacity: 233 GB Available 90GB) moving new project onto 1TB drive and making more room on the internal drive too. Skipping/jerky playback still occurs.
I copied a small section, placing in & out points on a few seconds of the project. I stopped at that point because I couldn't figure how to move to the internal HD. (My brain has been on overdrive and dropping memory rapidly ~ another support topic.) Please tell me how to move the clip to the internal drive.
I did play another completed project, that had no previous problem. It did skip when the player was over the titles/transitions.
I thought of copying the project and starting w/new titles & transitions to see if there was some corruption problem, until I played the 2nd project and had the same result.

  • Change default location for purchased movies ONLY in itunes

I need to know if there is a way to have purchased movies and TV shows strictly download to an external hard drive or do you have to move the entire itunes directory. This is for a client and they do not want to have to move each movie or TV show manually to the external drive and then re-import (understandable).

I haven't tried this but may do so soon. How about setting up symbolic links?
Close iTunes. Use Finder to make an iTunes director on the external drive. Let's say the drive is called "storage" and your music is in your home directory. In your main iTunes Music folder, move (not copy) the "Movies" and "TV Shows" folders to the external drive. In Teminal, create two symbolic links:
    $ ln -s /volumes/storage/iTunes/Movies "~/Music/iTunes Music/Movies"
    $ ln -s "/volumes/storage/iTunes/TV Shows" "~/Music/iTunes Music/TV Shows"
You may want to test this first on one of your CD are artist folders before moving a large directory. If the pathname has a space characters, you need to put quotes around the full path. The ~ refers to your home directory.
To anyone, please correct me if the path syntax is wrong for Mac OS X.
    Hope this helps,
    Steven

  • Jerky playback of content from US iTunes store

    Hello,
I am experiencing a problem with the playback of content from the US iTunes store (in this case it's season 7 of "The Office").
When watching an episode, every so often (on average every 30-60 seconds) the framerate seems to drop just a little bit, but enough to notice. What I see is that faces appear to move more slowly than natural. This usually lasts for about a second or two for each occurrence of the problem. The audio is unaffected when that happens. The problems does not always occur at the same point in the episode, i.e. when I watch the episode I might experience it at 0:39, but if I start the playback again I might not experience it at 0:39 but only at 0:45.
I only seem to observe this with SD content, HD is not affected.
In my configuration I am using the ATV2 with a Samsung LE32A557 in Europe (ATV2 shipped from Germany). You could argue that some European TVs have problems with content with a framerate of 24fps but the same content plays fine with the original Apple TV on the same TV, so the problem is specific to the ATV2 and not the TV.
Is anyone seeing the same thing?
I have exchanged the HDMI cable, restored ATV2 to factory condition and upgraded the firmware of my TV, but all to no avail.
Any help is appreciated, I am already thinking of returning the ATV2.

I was having the same troubles over the weekend even though my internet signal is stellar. I called up apple and they had me do some trouble shooting aka make sure all of my versions were up to date and my signal was good. When all was said and done, they had me go to settings->general->reset on the appleTV and let it do its thing. It was about 20 minutes and it had reset itself (saved all my passwords and logins). Now it works without a problem and runs and smooth as can be. Hopefully this isn't something that needs to be done frequently.
Hope this works for you too!

  • How to move ONLY one iTunes item from iPad to computer

How do I move JUST one item from my iPad to the computer using the new iTunes?  I do NOT want to sync everything on the iPad to the computer.  I do NOT want the computer to download anything from the store.
My home internet connection isn't much faster than dial-up.  I also have access to a high-speed internet connection somewhere else, so have been buying or renting movies and TV shows with the iPad.  if I've purchased them, I transfer them to a separate iTunes library I have on an external hard drive connected to my computer and remove them from the iPad, since memory on it is an issue.
I just tried to do that for the first time using the newest version of iTunes.  First iTunes went to the store to download a movie, which would take 8 hours and that I didn't want.  I quit the program and selected sync from iPad.  Then, it proceeded to automatically transfer a bunch of books and podcasts that I don't want to transfer (and it will take a bunch of extra time).  How can I transfer ONLY the one episode of a TV show that's on the iPad?  I don't want to transfer anything else, not the books and so on.  I can't find any way to do that in the latest version of iTunes.
Is there any way to restore the old iTunes, so that I can individually choose what I want to copy to the computer from the iPad?

    mtngal2,
I've had this same problem and I haven't received a response how to get around it.
    Have you received any answers?

  • Jerky Playback Solution

For all that have been experiencing the "jerky movie playback" or the "freeze frame syndrome" I offer this solution. I feel very confident with it as I experienced similar slow downs with my old Power Mac 8500 years ago and it was the exact same issue. At that point I had just upgraded to the most current version of Quicktime. It created a slowdown with just about every process one could think of, right down to the redraw rate on my screen (excruciatingly slow). I eventually solved the problem by downgrading back to the previous version of QT..
In any case after recently upgrading my Imac to QT 7.0x (7.03 to be exact) from 6.5.2 I began to experience the dreaded "jerky playback" to movies that had previously run very smoothly; all movies, all sizes, and with all varieties of audio clips, music and voiceovers. It was such extreme degradation that it rendered IMovie virtually unusable. From my previous experience I immediately suspected the QT upgrade. After researching everyone's discussion threads for a couple of hours I was convinced that QT 7.0x was indeed the problem and I immediately downgraded to 6.5.2, .... and voila; my movie projects returned to their old reliable selves. (and that's with a mere 5gb free space on my hard drive). So if you're experiencing "jerky playback" I strongly suggest a QT downgrade to 6.5.2. You can find the downgrade options on the Quicktime discussion board. Hope this helps you as it did me. Happy movie making.

Too bad you were so in a hurry downgrading, you didn't even perform some troubleshooting. QT 7 does have advantages, mainly H.264 support.
    I quote Karl Petersen:
”Some people have reported smoother playback after resetting QuickTime preferences. (Yes QuickTime, not iMovie.) To do that quit iMovie, open System Preferences and click on the QuickTime icon. Change something (anything). Close System Preferences. Re-launch iMovie HD.”
    I quote Steve Summers1:
”I found out that since I had done an upgrade install of Tiger, I still had old versions of QuickTime components in my /Users/~/Library/QuickTime/ folder. These had the same names as the new QuickTime 7 components which were in the /System/Library/QuickTime/ folder. QuickTime was trying to load the old components from my user library into the new QuickTime application.
”I deleted the old ones from the user location, along with some of the really old (circa 2002) non-competing components which were still in there. Then I restarted, just for good measure.
”My error messages went away, and QuickTime 7 is working as it should.”

  • How do I move only part of my itunes library to an external hard drive?

I have all my music and movies in the itunes library. I am wanting to move the movies to an external hard drive to save space, but keep the music in itunes on my computer.  I want to be able to play them all through my apple TV via home sharing. I have read a number of posts about consolidating the library and how to access files from an external hard drive, and how to move the entire library to another location, but don't know how to move part of the library.

It is possible but it is not standard configuration for iTunes. You will need to learn details of how iTunes operates in order to stay on top of it and not be back here in a month with a messed up library, or in a year or two when you discover it is a real nuisance when it comes to transferring your content to a new drive.
http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/instant-expert-secrets-featur es-of-itunes-9/ - "To perform a consolidate operation on selected tracks only, simply highlight the tracks you would like the consolidate, right-click and choose 'Consolidate'. iTunes will prompt you to confirm that you want to copy these tracks into your iTunes Media folder."  You will, of course, need to temporarily re-designate your iTunes media folder location as part of doing this.
The above method is a possibility but I have not tested it because I still run iTunes 7.5
Another way would be to copy the files to the external drive.  Delete them from iTunes, then drag the copied files back to iTunes (re-adding them) while holding down the option key.  If you do have anything in a playlist it will have to be re-added to the playlist, and you will lose ratings and date added.

Your best option is to post this in the iTunes forum.

I recently downloaded my digital copy of titanic and from the itunes extras screen I push play and nothing happens.  The movie is not listed, only the itunes extra is listed in the list.  How do I repair?

I have the same problem on the latest iTunes software and Windows 7. My window is maximzed and I do not see any tab for photos. Seems related to a recent update (IOS7?) as this was there - at least before the very big change to the interface.

  • I am trying to upload movies from my itunes to my iphone and it will only upload a select few. Why?

Help! I am trying to upload movies from my iTunes to my iPhone and it will only upload a select few. Why?

You are using File->Add File (or Folder) to Library, right?
Make sure that you also look at the various categories of content stored on the library:  turn on the sidebar (Ctrl+S keys toggle) and click the categories to see if the content shows in the content window of iTunes.
It could be you are trying to add a video/movie in a format iTunes does not accept because it cannot play it or work with it.  (And yes, if iTunes cannot add it to the library, it should absolutely report an error message rather than leave you wondering and drop the command.)

  • Can I playback a movie that i purchased in iTunes on my MBP connected to a projector with a DVI cable?

I am trying to playback a movie that i purchased in iTunes with my Macbook Pro while it is connected to a projector with a DVI cable. It starts but after a few seconds it will stop the playback. What do I need to do to fix this problem?

I don't know your configuration or the source of the issue.  As long as it is normal playback it should work.  I have run output from a MacBook Pro to a TV set with HDMI and as far as the computer is concerned it is simply playing back the medium and doesn't care how I have the output rigged.  The TV simply acts as an oversize monitor.
