Jerky scrolling in Safari 2.0.4 (since 10.4.7)

I was disappointed to find that the recent 10.4.7 update made two-fingered-touchpad-scrolling extremely jerky in Safari. In order to make sure that I wasn't just imagining it, I got a copy of 10.4.6's Safari for comparison, and there is a definite difference. Anyone noticed this problem? Shiira for example scrolls like butter...

Without knowing what's in the CSS file and what's unique about that installation of Tiger, it's impossible for anyone to tall you. Why can't they update their system to 10.4.11 and the many updates that go along with it?

  • Jerky scrolling and Safari not displaying most jpegs in one user a/c

    Hi
I upgraded my 15" mid 2010 MBP to Mountain Lion and find that it is behaving oddly. I have two different user accounts and the oddities vary between accounts. In one, most jpegs in Safari are not displayed, substituted with black rectangles with patterns of coloured dots (in the other, there is no problem with rendering pictures). The scrolling of pages is extremely jerky in Safari and far from perfect elsewhere (slightly jerky in Preview eg). Even the dock magnification is jerky, with icons breaking up as you pass over them.
In both accounts the scroll bar in Safari flickers on and off irrespective of whether the setting in General prefs is for the scroll bar to display permanently or not. The less troubled user account is noticeably snappier in action (eg opens the About this Mac screen with no delay compared with a second or so in the other account).
I've tried ditching the caches for Sarari with no effect. I rebuilt permissions after the install. I'm at a loss to know what to do next as it feels like a generic video problem but, bizarrely is more or less confined to one account.
    Any clues?

Check Safari > Preferrences > Extensions
If there are any installed, turn that OFF, quit then relaunch Safari to test.
If it's not an extension issue, try troubleshooting third party plugins.

  • 10.6.5 breaks scrolling in Safari

Just upgraded using Software Update and scrolling in Safari is no longer smooth when using the touch pad. I used to be able to read a web page and slowly scroll down at the same time. Now web pages flicker badly as you scroll. Try smartmoney.com, bbc.com and even news.google.com. I see people recommending the Combo Update, is it different? Also, can I use it since I already did Software Update?

I repaired permissions before the combo update and then again after the update. There may be some improvement but now I am sensitive to the flickering and may not be the best judge of it. My wife did volunteer this morning (before the combo update) that the computer seemed to be slower than it has been. She uses it every day and I did not tell her about the update so that confirms what I had felt about it also being slower.
I have the MacBook Pro with 2 video cards in it and I switched to the faster card and there are definite improvements in screen response and with pages loading faster in Safari. Scrolling in Safari is a little smoother but iPhoto is still real jerky.
I'll consider this solved because I think something in the video drivers has been updated (negatively) and it will take a further update from Apple to fix it. It's really too bad because I just became an Apple user this year and was impressed by how smoothly every thing works. Now the jerkiness in Safari and iPhoto feels more like the old MS Windows experience.
Thanks to all for the help!

  • How can I get back the two button smooth scroll with Logitec optical marble mouse since Adobe Acrobat or FireFox updates on 10/26/2010 made it quit?

Oct 25, 26 or 27 both Adobe Acrobat and Mozilla Firefox alerted me they had updates to install. Since I trust them both I installed them. However, since then my optical marble mouse from Logitech acted strangely different. The cursor did not move as usual. It didn't respond right. I thought it might have needed the dust wiped out, so I did that. It still acted sluggish when I tried to move it, it was as though it was "spinning its wheels" not going anywhere. I went to the Control Panel clicked on Mouse, and proceeded to look at the settings and set them to default. I then tried to use the universal scroll by clicking the two big buttons which showed a circle with cross hair arrows as usual. When the marble was moved forward or backward, the scroll had always been smooth allowing one to read the screen evenly and without holding any button down. Now it was jerky. Is this a problem from the last update? My version of Firefox is 3.6.12
    Thank you

I am happy to see another person is having this jerky scroll situation with the latest update to Firefox on October 27. I did check my I.E browser and '''THAT BROWSER''' still does the nice smooth scroll....let's get 'er fixed Mozilla! I know you can!

  • Color fades when scrolling in Safari 4

Since upgrading yesterday from Safari 4 beta to Safari 4 proper (and from 10.5.6 to 10.5.7), a strange things happen: when I scroll up or down in Safari, the color fades. It returns if I stop and click outside the app (i.e. on the desktop background), then recurs if I again scroll in Safari. Didn't happen before the upgrade, and it's quite annoying. Any suggestions?

What are the exact steps you took to fix the problem? I've run Repair Permissions twice now, restarted Safari, and still having the issue:
    http://www.thekruels.com/grabup/714cfa6b8dc4e60f9bd24a058870ecc8.png
The above example occurs when I scroll down any page. The content of the page becomes very, very dark and completely unreadable.

  • Jerky scrolling in CS, primitive & unacceptable?

    Hi,
I have a major gripe with CS6, and I am very curious if I am alone in this. It concerns the scrolling behaviour and redraw performance of InDesign and Illustrator in particular.
I use most of the CS applications professionally every day, and have used them since I started work as a professional designer in the early ‘90’s. Many things have changed, for the better. But after 20 years of development, to be honest, I think the way screen redraw and scrolling in CS behaves, seems embarrassingly primitive.
Frankly, I think it‘s not up to scratch and unacceptable for modern standards. Compared to the leaps and bounds developers of 3D design applications have made, I struggle to comprehend why a few simple 2D pages are so difficult to redraw. Case in point: the way the Pages palette in ID is updated. All thumbnails are painstakingly regenerated on every change, even when only one page is altererd. This takes close to half a second for every spread.
I use a fairly decent MacBook pro, with quite a bit of RAM, which is quite sufficient for heavy professional use, especially compared with the processing power I started out with. It‘s far better equipped than an iPad for example, which hardly ever displays this kind of screen lag. But when navigating even simple documents, screen redraw and scrolling behaviour in all Adobe CS appications (apart from maybe PS) is jerky, lagging and very stubborn. It still feels the same as when I was working in my Quadra 6100. And this is not due to using the wrong settings, I know how to work the prefs.
Now, this scrolling performance may seem trivial at first sight. But it is very important. The speed and fluidity of screen redraw is a crucial part of user interaction, especially when navigating larger documents. And it is essential for professional users, who intensively use the application every day. Jerky screen behaviour causes mental and eye fatigue and deminishes user satisfaction considerably.
So, why is scrolling behaviour and screen redraw performance of these professional applications still so jerky. Will this be resolved in new CC version?
I think the way users are enabled to fluidly navigate their documents should be a key priority in further development of all CS applications. No more jerky scrolling!
    What do you think?

Hi Peter, thank for your reply. No it‘s not that… These settings are ok.
By the way, I use the Apple trackpad, not a mouse. This is a related problem, which makes scrolling and navigation more cumbersome, since CS recognises all manual input as a mouse scrolling wheel. Why is this not also an issue? I bet millions of mobile users would like to work using the excellent MacBook trackpad only and not have to lug a mouse along. Can we get out of the ‘80’s and finally use multi finger gestures, which are now so poorly implemented in CS?
But my main point is that the screen redraw performance and scrolling behaviour is sub-optimal regardless of settings. Just compare it to screen redraw behaviour in other data-intensive applications outside CS. Or to the way your browser content behaves. Even data-intensive in-browser web-apps like google maps preform more fluid!
Maybe compared to previous versions, performance is sometimes improved a little. But this is just tweaking. I‘m talking about real improvement. Just imagine being able to fluidly navigate your InDesign of Illustrator documents and not have it jerk irksomely across your beautiful 24" display like it‘s 1996. CS now seems to rely solely on regular processing and memory for screen-redraw, and not use the GPU in any way (or very poorly) for display tasks.
    That should not be acceptible.

  • Safari won't open since I installed Firefox.

Safari won't open since I installed Firefox. I keep getting a window that asks me if I want to "Reopen" Safari in a large window that includes error messages, lots of them. I click on "Reopen" and a smaller window opens up with the same option to "Reopen", but Safari just goes back to the large window again; the one with all the error messages.

Quit the application. Force quit if necessary.
Relaunch it by holding down the shift key and clicking its icon in the Dock. From the menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
to get rid of any cookies or other data left by the server. Open your Downloads folder and delete anything you don't recognize.

  • Scrolling in SAFARI

I've posted something similar before when the MacBook came out in its first week, but not many people seem to have noticed the issue.
Now that the macbook's been out a month, I wanted to find out if more people are noticing this:
When using two finger scroll in SAFARI, the web page doesn't seem to scroll smoothly as compared to the old MacBook White and MacBook Air first gen. Somehow there just seems to be a waving/rippling effect.. I don't know the technical term to explain this. The page displays fine as soon as I stop scrolling, but while scrolling there seems to be a rippling effect of some sort.
I tried it on a demo machine at the shop and it has the same problem. also on MBP late 2008 as well.
Is anyone else noticing this? Do you know if Apple will fix it? I love the new MacBook but I use SAFARI a lot and it's annoying the ** out of me...

    Check here:

Most think it can be fixed with a patch.

  • Hi!  My magic mouse won't scroll in word for mac - but it scrolls in safari and outlook.  So frustrating!

I just upgraded to OS X Yosemite and am using Microsoft Word for Mac 2011 version 14.4.5.  My magic mouse no longer scrolls in word - though I can click on things with the magic mouse.  And the magic mouse scrolls in safari and outlook.  Any thoughts?

I had the same problem. I just quit Word and restarted and it worked. I tried with a new document just to try it at first and when that worked, I tried it on the document I was working on and it was fixed!

  • Smooth Scrolling in Safari

Is there a way to enable smooth scrolling in Safari? I know is enabled in the Mac version of Safari but is there a way to do it on PC?

I already discovered the answer to my question in another post. Turns out Safari 5.1 does not have the feature for smooth scrolling. I think it did in earlier versions but was dropped in v 5.1.1. Apple, we need it back!
Now, I don't know how to cancel/withdraw this question. Can someone help me with that?

  • Safari 2.0.4 under 10.4.7 jerky scrolling

This topic is also being reported on several other forums.
I have confirmed the problem on 3 different intel based machines (haven't tried a PPC based machine).
Safari 2.0.3 under 10.4.6 scrolls smoothly, but Safari 2.0.4 under 10.4.7 scrolls terribly. Try www.apple.com/macbookpro as an example. People have reported that copying the older version of Safari and running it under 10.4.7 fixes the problem. Hopefully a fix will be here soon.

I figured it out. I downloaded the 10.4.11 update and installed it off my desktop.

  • Scroll back to previous page not working in safari on my air since downloaded maverick - any suggestions

I dont seem to be able to go back in safari by using finger scrolling on trackpad on my air- I can on my imac but it wont work on the air. I know that other people have had a similar problem and have read the suggestions but I dont know how to empy cache and do the other things suggested. Can anyone tell me in plain english how to fix it please.

It's fine now. Originally, he went on Safari and clicked on one of his most visited sites and was unable to scroll. Then he went to Google and was able to get to the keyboard to do a search (I guess he couldn't do that with the scrolling issue). He also tried Yahoo and did a search for a news site he couldn't get to previously, went to the site and now everything is fine. For someone with PTSD (not me) this is like a life or death situation. For me, it's something I try to look into for resolve ASAP!!!

  • Safari 6 has jerky scrolling issues

After a week of dealing with some web pages that jump back and forth while scrolling, I think I have isolated it to the inclusion of the "recommend" prompts at the top of those pages. I don't know the name of the box with the prompts in it, but twitter, facebook, etc are in a box at the top of the page. As the page loads, this box scrolls to the right and then down the page which causes the bumping around of the browser window. It is very annoying when I am trying to read an article and the paragraphs bump up and down on the page. My question is, does anyone know of a way to disable this box so that it is not on the browser page? TIA

OK, I've found my problem -- and it was my fault, not Apple's (mea culpa).  A few months ago, I had followed a hint from MacWorld and set up a CSS file to have Safari automatically zoom its display to 120% when I launched it.  This was to help my bad eyesight.  Here the hint address:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/1166811/automatically_zoom_safari_pages_on_launc h.html
Wife Safari 6, however, this causes the bizarre behaviour of those little icons for Twitter, Facebook, etc.  Getting rid of the CSS fixed the problem.  Curiously when I manually zoom my Safari pages, the problem doesn't return.
Anyway, all is sweetness and light with my Safari.  On to the general slugishness of Mountain Lion…

  • Safari 5.1 for windows has jerky scrolling, downgrading to 5.0.5 fixes the bug

  • Jerky scrolling in web browsers

Mostly I'm using firefox/chrome for web browsing on a non-retina 2012 MBP.  Since upgrading to mavericks, the scrolling has become extremely jerky, it looks like there's a tiny pause every time a picture moves from the offscreen buffer to the screen.  I'm wondering if the new memory management is causing this ... is anyone else seeing this?  I tried turning smooth scrolling off and on in firefox and swapped between the integrated and discrete GPUwith no effect.

Similar problems. I own a MBP 15" 2013 Retina model.
I did a clean install of Maverick two days ago.
Normally I use Chrome for web browsing but the scrolling is extremly jerky since the upgrade.
With Safari scrolling through the same website is smooth.
I am using the touchpad or Apple touch mouse. Makes no difference.
And to be sure I used Chrome with all other apps shut down
Also I am using Parallels 9 with Windows 8.1. Here the same problems. Webbrowsing with Explorer or Chrome under windows is also jerky.
Videoplayback is also jerky under windows. Watching Netflix under windows is juddering
Even swiping from OSX to Windows (under Parallels) is jerky.
With Mountain Lion it was all fine. Wouldn't be suprised if the new memory compression stuff of Maverick is causing issues with non Apple apps.
The smooth feeling I had with my MBP had is fully vapourated now.
I am considering to roll back to Mountain Lion.
