Jerky video when uncompressed

Ok... I'm going to be a bit long winded here so everyone knows the situation exactly.
I use a FCP box at work editting local news promos. I work in DV.... haven't had any problems...
My boss was nice enough to buy me a new system so I can work uncompressed and such. Here is the run down of what I have....
4x2.5 GHz PowerPC G5
MacOSX 10.4.6
4.5 GB DDR2 SDRAM
Final Cut Pro version 5.0.4
AJA Kona LH
Sequence Preset: AJA Kona LH: 525 29.97 10bit
Capture Preset: AJA Kona LH: 525 29.97 10bit
Device Control Preset: AJA Kona LH NTSC Sony VTR
Video Playback: AJA Kona 525i29.97 10bit (720x486)
Audio Playback: AJA Kona
Deck: Sony DNW-A75 Betacam SX
Storage: Apple XServe Raid with 1Terabyte over 4 drives.
Video comes from the deck to the AJA Kona through an SDI line.
I do not know much of how the Raid is setup since some dude came and did it for us.... it doesnt work like I had intended it to.
We have the FCP running DV quality, an After Effects box, and the Uncompressed quad FCP all three hooked up to it.
My idea had been that this way all three could access the same information. However, when the guy set it up for us... he said he partitioned it four ways. Each computer gets one partition with the uncompressed FCP box getting a second. From any of those boxes I cannot access the other box's partitions... clearly this defeats the purpose of the system....
Anyway, I have found that when I digitize video on my new uncompressed system.... after about 15 seconds it starts to get jerky. The video will freeze while the audio continues to play. Usually it will do this for maybe 15 frames and then play again for maybe 8 then do it again a couple of times. It also reports timecode breaks repeatedly when I know for a fact there are no breaks on the tape.
To trouble shoot this I changed my capture setting to 8 bit uncompressed. The problem persisted. However, when I changed it over to DV compression, the problem went away and there were no timecode breaks.
If anyone has suggestions I would greatly appreciate them and I might bake you brownies. haha!
If you want my 100% speculative guess... I think that perhaps when dude partitioned the Raid, he gave each computer a single drive on the array. This way the information being written is no longer being split four ways for faster read and write times but is simply being written by one drive, the drive can't keep up with the uncompressed video and thus I get lag. However, seeing as I didn't set that up, I don't know if that is the case or if that is even possible. I don't have much experience at the hardware end of things!
Help me!!

Okay Patrick, here's the latest in my jerky video saga...
I ran the test with these settings:
Test: Disk Read/Write
Disk: Host1Media1 (XServe Partition)
File Size: 4.0 GB
Frame Size: 720x486 10-bit
File System Cache: Disabled
Simultaneous KNOA DMA: On (I'm not sure what this is but I clicked it)
The average write speed was about 100MB/second
The average read speed was about 110MB/second
I noticed though that at frame 385 it was writing 192.2MB/s and then for frame 386 it dropped to 0.4MB/s, frame 387 was 1.8MB/s and then 388 was back to 120.0MB/s. This occured again around frame 3400.
I asked the IT guy here at work and he said that sort of behavior is normal for a drive system and shouldn't cause this problem.
I also tried some more experiments today. I tried setting my capture scratch to the internal media drive and had no problems digitizing 10bit uncompressed. The problem seems to only be with the XServe. We called the guy who installed it for us and he said to reboot it and if that didnt work to reformat the drives. Basically, I have no faith in the guy. When he installed the thing he didn't seem to have a clue what he was doing. Go figure.
Anyway, based on what I've seen I've come to the conclusion that the problem is not with the KONA card (it plays the video fine, its just when we digitize), FCP, or the computer but is instead with the XServe.
I don't have much experience with this stuff but, it all seems to point in that direction to me.
I'm not an idiot am I? The XServe is meant to be used for this sort of thing, right? I hope we didn't just buy the wrong thing alltogether as well, that would suck just a bit! :/
Once again, any more suggestions would rock as I'm at a loss as to what would cause this. Perhaps I should post in the XServe forum?
Kip
btw, I've tried to supply as much info as possible whenever possible, seeing as I've read so often comments such as "what version are you using? What deck? ****, what computer?!" If anything pertinent is missing please let me know!

  • Jerky video when window has focus

I am new to the Mac world and everything is good except for jerky video playback.
When watching video I find that if the window playing the video has focus then the video is jerky but if another window has focus the video playback in the window with the video is smooth. This is certainly the case for watching Youtube (safari or firefox) and iTunes video clips.
    Do others have this problem

I tried what you are describing and observed no fuzziness of the video. I had two applications open at the time and switched from one to the other. It just might be the video.

  • [MSI RS480M2-IL] jerky video when playing mpeg2

My new msi rs480m2-il mainboard with venice 3000+ cpu and 512 mb twinmos ram shows problems when playing mpeg2 content. When playing recorded mpeg2 file the video is jerky (I already checked the video source, but it is random)
After first install of windows mce I found out the image was jerky and flashed the bios from 3.3 to 3.8 to see if it improves some things. The only improvement was that the CPU was recognised and that I could enable C&Q.
Then I did a fresh install of windows again (diabled all unneccesary stuff like firewire, second ide channel, onboard sound in the bios), but no improvements. It is totally worthless for usage as htpc.
After fresh install of windows I did the following:
    - installed all windows updates
    - installed ati catalyst 5.7 drivers
    - installed nvidia purevideo decoder 1.02-150
The playback is in VMR9 with hardware acceleration enabled, this results in a CPU load of 40-50% (which I think is pretty high).
    Where can I look?
    - VGA card
    - drivers
    - Memory
    - Bios
    - RMA mainboard?
Is there anyone facing the same problems? Did anyone succeed to eliminate these problems?
I am also facing the temp problem (venice core) which shows a cpu temp that is way too high

Realtek A3.74 drivers from realtek website
There are a few threads in the Forum on problems with the more current Realtek driver sets and the board, e.g. poping and stuttering.  It's always possible that the video playback is affected by audio.  The set on the MSI CD that came with the board is good.
I tested newer and also encountered problems.  I tested several of the Catalyst IGP sets without problems, but recommend you try the Realtek set on the CD.  Make sure you uninstall the current set before you move back.
FYI.....I tested ALL TYPES of media with the rig in my profile and video was very smooooooth on all tests.  Even streaming video from the net was good.  It's now my daughter's system, and she says it's running perfect.

Windows 7 x64 - Encode h.264 results in jerky video in Windows Media Player (WMP) 12

Profile: 1280x720 fps 30, square pixel, progressive
    Destination:
For Testing purpose, just converting the original within Adobe Media Encoder.
      Profile: same as Source
    1) The original source files play fine using any player, so the hardware of my test systems (3 computers) is ok
    2) When exporting the Video to H.264 the resulting video is jerky in Windows Media Player and Quicktime
    3) When converting the jerky result video again, but now into WMV, it plays fine
The problem can be reproduced on all 3 machines.
It seems to me that Windows Media Player and Quicktime enforce their own h.264 decoder which has problems playing Premiere Exports.
These Players seem to play the file properly:
    - VLC Media Player
    - Media Player Classic Home Cinema
    - Adobe media player
So how can one be sure that the Premiere h.264 exports are just fine and the only problem is on decoder side? However, I feel very uncomfortable not being able to play the h.264 files within Windows Media Player 12, which has uses the built-ind Windows 7 h.264 decoder.
    Any help is highly appreciated!
    Thank you

    Hello Harm,
let me add my comment of another discussion:
My concerns are about a)distribution and general b)compatibility.
    a) When videos are distributed most of the users will probably try to open the files with Windows Media Player. So it is not a good start to have fresh exported h.264 videos which won't run fine with the 'main' player on windows
    b) I am wondering if the Problems with Windows Media Player may also be a sign of a general compatibility issue of the h.264 video itself
At least in case b) Adobe would have to look into this.
And in general there maybe a bug in the MS h.264 decoder.
    Thank you
    Chris

  • Jerky Video and Display Driver Error

We use CS3 at our production house.  My editor has told me he is now getting jerky videos and the following error.  This pops up in a yellow triangle at the bottom of the screen which when I click on it, an Events Window is opened.
Error: "Desktop Display Mode has been reset because the video card returned an error. Please reset the Desktop Display Mode in the Playback Settings dialog as this may impact your playback performance."
The computer is a Sony Vaio with 1GB RAM, P4 w/HT, RAID5 of SCSI drives, and ATI Radeon 1600 Pro.  We are running Windows XP Pro and Premiere Pro CS3.  Supposedly the video just started being jerky the last month or two.  Windows update issue?  I have tried updating the video card drivers (released March 2009) and also changed the Desktop Display to all three options ... Comptable, Standard and GPU.  The video still plays back and exports to tape jerky.  However, if we export to an AVI on the local disk, then pull that video back into an older version of Premiere Pro we can export to tape.
Any thoughts!?!?!  I have found similar qusetions in other forums, but it seems like no one has an answer.

It is very common for OS updates to render display drivers obsolete, and most people do not even know that these are installed. If you have tried the most recent driver (replaceing an older one), and not helped, it might be something else.
The aspect of the video Exporting poorly, leads me to believe that your system might be underpowered, especially in the I/O sub-system. A slow, fragmented, or full HDD can do the same. That would NOT address the warning message, though. That almost has to be a vid-card, or driver issue.
Also, if your Assets have to be decoded by PrPro, that will tax the system. If you Export as DV-AVI, then the CPU does not need to work overtime on the conversion.
Please give a complete description of the Assest, especially their CODEC's. Please give a system breakdown, paying special attention to the I/O sub-system (HDD's specs. and all configuration details).
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Prevent jerky video from Vixia HF R42 on PC

I'm trying to take photos of dogs running at agility trials and at the dog park.  The videos are coming out horribly jerky, even when the dogs are going slow.  I get at most 2 seconds of smooth video then it pauses and jumps ahead several frames.  I've tried many different camera settings and software to download the videos to my PC.  I'm wondering if zooming is what's causing the jerkiness.  I need to be able to zoom while shooting and this is getting extremely frustrating.
I just looked at the videos in camera and they're fine.  It seems to be a problem once they're downloaded to my Win7 64 bit PC using the Canon provided SW OR Adobe Premiere Elements 10.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Hi Puparazzi!
    Thank you for posting.
Playing back HD video on a computer requires a certain amount of system resources, so other systems may be much better at playing it back smoothly than others.
What are the general specifications of your computer? (ie. CPU, RAM, Video Card, Hard Drive, etc.)
Are there any other programs running at the same time you try to play back the video?
Have you tried playing back the video on another computer?

  • Jerky video with N70

    Hi,
Just wanted to ask if I'm the only person that is encountering this problem.
Whenever I try capturing a video... The video is jerky but after saving it... It plays fine when I view it.
My friend has the same unit as well as the firmware 5.0616.2.0.3
    24-04-06
    RM-84
yet when I tried to use his phone it captured fine unlike mine.

    Current phones: N70 5.616.2.0.3, Motorola SLVR L7, Motorola V3Maxx

    Hello,
I too have this problem with jerky video but mine seems much worse. I tried to switch to the phone memory instead of the card but that just makes things much worse! I have transfered my videos to a computer and it is not just playback on the phone that's jerky so it must be during recording that there's a serious bugg.
I contacted Nokia support about this and asked is there was a update coming but they just replied that I should hand it in to a service place, so I did. After two weeks without my (only) phone, I got it back and all they had done was format and reinstall the same software version. Hurray for Nokia! I remember the tv-ads they ran, depicting the N70 as a kickass video recording phone. Ok ok that's enought complaining... Does anyone have any suggestions? Nokia sure doesn't have a clue.

  • Jerky Video for isolated user

    Hello,
I recently launched a Flash website that has video tutorials
synchronized with Flash animations. Overall the site is functioning
well, but I have an isolated instance of user having very jerky
video with the audio occasionally cutting out.
His connection speed is fine (3572.7 Kbps). When I asked him
for details he said the video was jerky from the start, and 'the
video cycled from smooth to jerky once every half to a whole
second.' He is using Flash player WIN 9.0.28.0, on win XP with all
updates. When asked he did not provide the browser version.
Here is a link to the site:
    http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Investing/StockInvestingTrading/Technical_Analysis.as px
It's set up using net connection and net stream for flvs
hosted on a media server. The flvs have cuepoints to trigger the
animations. When a given flv is finished downloading the next flv
in the list is then preloaded. The buffer time is set to 6 seconds.
I haven't been able to recreate the problem. The feedback
that we've gotten suggests that the site runs fine. If anyone has
trouble viewing this please let me know and please provide details.
Thanks in advance for any help!

  • Shaky Video when Burned to DVD

    Hello all,
Call me an amatuer when it comes to camcorders. I have a Sony DCR-SR40 HDD camcorder and when I take video recorded on this device, transfer to my Mac, and then edit in HD 6, the video (when played back on a DVD) comes out shaky for action video where people are moving. It is almost like there are tracers when they are moving.
When the raw footage is played back in its native mpg format it looks fine, and when it is burned using Sony's "One Touch" DVD burn the video is not shaky or look like it has tracers, it looks fine. I am thinking it has to do with the quality of the image being recorded by the video camera and that when it gets compiled/burned to DVD it causes the shakiness. It has done this in iMovie HD 6 and in Adobe Elements 3.0. Is there a fix for this?
If it is just a camcorder issue, any recommendations for a good quality camcorder to capture sports footage (Football) that would burn great in iMovie and not have that shakiness/tracers?

    >MPEG2 exported from Premeire, to quicktime, to encore
That is, to me, a backwards work flow
Mpeg2 is an output format... but you are using it as your source file in Premiere... what is the source of the file?
Read Bill Hunt on a file type as WRAPPER http://forums.adobe.com/thread/440037
    What is a CODEC... a Primer http://forums.adobe.com/thread/546811
What CODEC is INSIDE that file? http://forums.adobe.com/thread/440037
Report back with the codec details of your file, use the programs below... a screen shot works well to SHOW people what you are doing
    For PC http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ or http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en
    For Mac http://mediainfo.massanti.com/
You are then exporting to Quicktime... which Encore must then encode to MPEG2 to make a DVD (the VOB on a DVD is a renamed MPEG)
You are starting with a compressed file... exporting which may add more compression... and compressing again in Encore... it is no wonder your DVD has lost quality

  • I am having trouble keeping the quality of my video when exporting to my external drive.  I change the kind to "original" but when I view the video from the external drive once exported, the sound and picture are distorted.

I am having trouble keeping the quality of my video when exporting to my external hard drive.  I have tried to export from iphoto with changing kind to "original" but when I open the video from the external drive the quality is effected.  I have also tried copying the video to my desktop and then dragging and dropping onto the drive...same problem. Any suggestions?  I would like to save everything to my external drive so that I can delete all of iphoto library and then reimport to correct a few things.

The file sizes are identical.  In the finder I did a search for all .mov files.  Then when they came up, I went through them and named each one so that they would be easier to find.  I am a new mac user and am used to windows.  I realized later that I should not have done this....with a mac files should be named within iphoto app...not finder....When I went to open the videos in iphoto, it wouldn't allow me.  I had to go into finder, copy to desktop and reimport into iphoto.  Then the videos worked again.  However, I had the problem with the poor video quality when copied to external drive before that.  Actually the first problem I had was when I copied to ext drive...videos were copying as an image...so I learned that you have to change "kind" to original before exporting....then that problem was solved...now they are videos, not images but not of a great quality.  Skips, sound and images are not in sync...etc...
