JetSpeed Portal in Sun Java App Server 7

We are attempting to set up Jakarta's JetSpeed Portal 1.5 as a prototype (strictly out of the box initially) on our system, which is a Windows 2000 based OS, running Sun Java Platform Edition ver 7.0.1. We have had several issues getting it running. The main issues have been related to the Java Classpath and the .jar files that the App server is referencing. The documentation on the Net has been VERY sketchy as it relates to running JetSpeed on Sun Java. Most all the documentation and discussions that reference JetSpeed are based on running it in Tomcat (since they are both from Jakarta). We are already using Sun as our App Server and would like to continue doing so.
Anyway, JetSpeed is now up and running, however, we are stuck on one error. We have tried modifying the Classpath, pointing to different .jars, etc, with no luck. The consistent (in several portlets) exception we are getting in the Global Admin Portlet for example:
org.apache.turbine.util.TurbineException: Error rendering Velocity template: /controls/html/jetspeed.vm: Invocation of method 'getContent' in class org.apache.jetspeed.portal.security.portlets.CacheableStatefulPortletWrapper threw exception class java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError : null
We have seen this error referenced on the Net, but all the recommendations to fix it have failed. Does anyone:
A. Have any documentation or experience running JetSpeed in Sun One (Sun Java)?
B. Know how to resolve this issue?

Can't execute web app from NetBeans 3.6 with Sun Java App Server 8

Hi there,
I'm tyring to execute a java web application called myfirstjsp.
In directory ...\myfirstsjp I've got:
- index.jsp
- WEB-INF dir
- META-INF dir.
I can run myfirstjsp from NetBeans if I choose the Netbeans default server, Tomcat 5.0.19 (this web server is configured to port 8084).
However, when I try to execute myfirstjsp from NetBeans with Sun Java System Application Server 8(configured to port 8080), it gives me an annoying message:
The Sun Java System Application Server 8 could not start.
More information about the cause is in the Server log file.
Possible reasons include:
- Port conflicts. (use netstat -a to detect possible port numbers already used by the operating system.)
- Incorrect server configuration (domain.xml to be corrected manually)
- Corrupted Deployed Applications preventing the server to start.(This can be seen in the server.log file. In this case, domain.xml needs to be modified).
I checked port conflicts but none found.
The other two options don't give me a place to start (I don't know what to do with domain.xml)
I'm working with:
- Windows XP Pro
- J2SE 1.4.2_04 (installed in C:\Program Files\j2sdk1.4.2_04)
- Sun Java Application Server 8 (installed in C:\Program Files\Sun\AppServer)
- Netbeans 3.6 + Sun Java System Application Server Plugin (installed in C:\Program Files\NetBeans3.6).

By looking at the Sun App Server log file, I discovered that the log outputs of
- Start Default Server (a link in the folder created by the installation of Sun App Server)
- and trying to execute myfirstjsp from NetBeans through Sun App Server
are very similar.

Is this EJB compilation error normal ? if not what does it mean ? Sun Java App Server installation isn't OK ?
I tried to look into the Sun App Server Troubleshooting, searched forums... but couldn't squeeze any valuable info from any of them.
If you have any sugestion regarding this problem, or you know some web site that addresses it please tell me !

I seem to have the same problem, I cant run sun application server 8.1. The server is in c:\sun\appserver\, I am using netbeans 4.1. I recieve the same comment above:
The Sun Java System Application Server 8 could not start.
More information about the cause is in the Server log file.
Possible reasons include:
- Port conflicts. (use netstat -a to detect possible port numbers already used by the operating system.)
- Incorrect server configuration (domain.xml to be corrected manually)
- Corrupted Deployed Applications preventing the server to start.(This can be seen in the server.log file. In this case, domain.xml needs to be modified).
I cant see any port conflict, the server is set to port 4848. I dont know about any configurations.

Oracle JDeveloper 10g with Sun Java App server

I have oracle JDeveloeper 10g and sun App Server 8. I want to find out if JDeveloper can create entity beans that can run on Sun app server.
I know that sun app server uses things like sun-cmp-mapping.xml and sun-ejb-jar.xml. If i create these as normal in JDeveloper would they run on sun app server? if not what configuration do i need to do?

Sun Java App Server 8 doesn't ship with the Apache Tomcat jk/jk2 connector. But you can download Tomcat 5 and install it. Copy ${catalina_home}/server/lib/tomcat-jk2.jar under $s1as_home}/lib
Now Sun Java App Server 8 will have the code required. Then you will need to start the jk connector (this is the most difficult task). Since you don't have any API to start this connector to listen (in Tomcat, the connector is started by default and listen on port 8009), the only way for you to start it is to use JMX. Pick one of the available JMX client ( jmx-ri is a good candidate), and do:
(1) create the connector
(2) start the connector
Then follow the Jakarta Tomcat instruction on how to install Apache and JK2.
I didn't spend the time to find the exact command for JMX, but technically it should work. Once I have time I will take a look (The Tomcat 5 Admin Gui uses JMX, so by browing the code you should find the exact JMX command)

Distributed transactions, EJB and Sun Java App Server

I'm trying to implement a CMT Stateless EJB that inserts data into a Oracle 9.2 table. All this running into a Sun Java System App Server 8.2 and using a XA Database Connection Pool.
Before starting bothering you, a simple question: has anybody successfully retrieved a connection from a XA connection pool? I've read somewhere that Oracle thin client is very limited and I wonder if one of its limitations would be "no support to XA transactions".
My pool information:

I created a jdbc resource called jdbc/__myxa so I can access the database pool using JNDI.
The code:

J2EE applications should retrieve all their resources through their component environment (java:comp/env) -- not by doing a global JNDI lookup. You should declare a resource-ref in ejb-jar.xml for the bean and then map that resource-ref to your physical data source (jdbc/__myxa) in sun-ejb-jar.xml. E.g, if the res-ref-name is "foo", your code would look it up under context.lookup("java:comp/env/foo");

OracleConnectionPoolDataSource with a JDBC defined in Sun Java App Server?

How do I use OracleConnectionPoolDataSource with a JDBC Resource defined in Sun Java System Application Server 8.2?
I created a JDBC Resource labeled "jdbc/__PetroPool" that is backed by a Connection Pool labeled "PetroPool".
Should I even be using OracleConnectionPoolDataSource or should I be using Apache Commons DBCP?

SJS Web Server 7.0 should work with any driver that has support for javax.sql.DataSource. The great majority of drivers do.
So instead of using the driver name, use the DataSource class name:
com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerDataSource
The properties to add should be:
user=username
password=password
servername=sql_server_hostname
portnumber=sql_server_port
databasename=databasename
In general, all the setters required to get the datasource configured can be set as properties.

Problem with CMP BEAN ON SUN JAVA APPLICATION SERVER 1.3.1

I am trying to deploy an entity bean with container managed persistence on sun java app. server 1.3.1. When I go for Deploy, the error 'SQL code not generated for following beans' is comming, when verified with verifier tool, the error shown is 'transaction attributes are not specified' , What should be the problem ?

Which appserver are you using exactly? the J2EE 1.3.1 RI, SJAS 7.0, SJSAS 7.1....etc
You need to make sure for that you have specified the correct deployment attributes for your CMP methods. You can pull the ear/jar into deploytool and review it there

I just had the same problem this morning. I believe the app server starts and if you browser directly to your app you'd get it, but the connection between the appserver and the IDE is somehow lost. An easier solution than completely reinstalling for me was to delete the .Creator folder in my home directory (C;|Documents and Setting\<username>\.Creator) and restart Creator

I am building a normal Java EE web app (WAR file), and I was originally developing on GlassFish v2.1 and everything was beautiful. Now, I found out our shared server is Sun Java Web Server 7, but the sys admin said everything should run fine as long as I wasn't using JSB's.
I downloaded and installed SJWS7 on my local machine so I could test my application against it, and JPA and SJWS7 are not getting along.
I am trying to bind my persistence.xml to the data source I created on SJWS7.

User Role problems in Sun Java Application Server Platform Edition 8

I am having two problems setting up user roles in Sun Java Application Server Platform Edition 8. At first, I thought that it was a problem with the higher level features that I was using, so I created a very simple example using the simplest authentication I can use, but the problem still occurs. I am using the file realm and configuring the users in the App Server Admin Console. I create 2 users in different roles. One user should have access, the other should not.
1) The first problem is that both users can access the page
2) The second problem is that the isUserInRole() method returns false for both users with the role that it should be authenticating against.

Your suggestion has lead me to find my problem. There were actually three problems.
1) First, you suggestion to reorder my xml file did not cause any errors to occur. I got suspicious that my web.xml file was wrong. I looked at some sample web-xml files and found that I was missing the header as follows:

2) When I added this information, the deploy feature failed stating the my web.xml file was out of order. I fixed the ordering. It now deployed, but the security still wasn't working.
3) I then added the sun-web.xml file. This file was missing before hand as I thought it was unnessary. However, this file added the essential mapping from a role to a group. After adding this, it now started to work.

Hi,
I've found that if you remove the j2ee-application element related to the enterprise app you are trying to deploy from Sun\AppServer\domains\domain1\config\domain.xml, and also remove your enterprise j2ee-app directory from Sun\AppServer\domains\domain1\applications\j2ee-apps\, it works.
This is not a permanent solution. I get the same error again, when I try to redeploy the application for the third time. Hope someone can help soon!

Install certifcate on sun java web server 7.0

we just moved away from IIS and servlet exec because of issues we are having with the speed. sun java web server was like 4 times faster. we had the web app up and running, but for some reason we couldnt figure out how to install a certificate. i went through the request wizard and got the code and sent it to digicert and got my code for the certificate. i then installed it by pasting it, after i finish i get this error (unknown option 'by'). can someone point me in the right direction.
my only guess so far was i am using *.domain.com in the domain field, when you request the certificate.

I can't see anything wrong with the steps you followed to install the certificate. Are you using Web Server 7.0 or Web Server 7.0 update 1? As far as I remember, in Web Server 7.0, wildcard characters like * were not allowed in the "Server Name(cn)" field of request certificate wizard. This got fixed in 7.0 update1 release.
Can you post you server logs so that we can figure out what is wrong? You can as well try certutil command as been suggested by mv and let us know if you could manage to install the certificate.

Could not start Sun Java Application Server

Hi ,
I have been using JSC for a while, now and then it reports an error " could not start sun java application server...". Does any one know why it s not able to start java application server..
Before you say anything, I have tried
1. use netstat to find any port conflicts.
2. Tried to start application server manually
3. shut down and start studio creator and then try running the project
4. shut down and start PC
unfortunately none of them helped
Only reinstalling resolved the problem. But I cant keep reinstalling very often.
Does any one know the permanent solution for this problem.

Sometimes it appears this is a timeout issue because it's taking too long to come up. As Jonathan says, undeploy can help with this (along with his other suggestions).
How many deployed projects do you see (in the server navigator you can open up the deployed server and see what's out there)?
I periodically undeploy "junk" projects that I'm not really using because they slow down the server startup (same thing happens I believe for tomcat... when the server starts it has to load them all and it takes awhile). You can undeploy from within the server navigator by drilling into the server nav and right clicking on the deployed app and choosing undeploy... or you can use the server admin tool.
