Jetstress 2013 found the following faulty logical disk performance counters
I'm using Jetstress 2013 to test the storage disk subsystem for Exchange 2013. After the db build completed I click run test & got this error. I'm only getting this error on this VM. The other 3 VMs are fine. I also reformatted the disk & rebuild
the db but got the same error. Anyone seen this before?
Jetstress testing failed. Error: Jetstress found the following faulty logical disk performance counters: C:\jsdb\db4. Ensure that all logical disk performance counters are working correctly with System Monitor. Error: Instance 'C:\jsdb\db4' does not exist
in the specified Category.
As reinstalling the VM is not always possible, and the time to recreate the databases quite considerable, the actual answer to this issue is to find the path that the logical disk counters are using and then update the path to the databases in JetStress
to match this.
On your test machine open Performance Monitor and click the Performance Monitor node.
Click the green + icon and select the "Logical Disk" row.
In the Instances of selected object you will see the paths that the logical disk counter is using to find the databases. For example C:\ExchangeVolumes\ExVol1 and C:\ExchangeVolumes\ExVol2.
Update the JetStress config to use these paths and not the paths that you might be using such as C:\ExchangeDatabases\DB01.db.
The problem is due to the autoreseed scripts in the perf calculator mounting the C:\ExchangeVolume path first (and so that is the logical disk counters path) but the operator of JetStress using the more obvious C:\ExchangeDatabases path.
There is an update to JetStress post the original date of this question that resolves this issue so you can use either path, but if you add disks to a server or recreate some of the disk arrays and not others you might find that JetStress needs to use C:\ExchangeVolumes\...
to reach some databases and C:\ExchangeDatabases to reach the others.
If you get the error in the original post for some of your databases and not all of them, then this is the fix and use Performance Monitor to see the paths needed and use only those in JetStress.

Cluster Disk Logical Disk Performance Counters Problem
I have some problem with Oracle cluster. It's a two node Windows server 2008 R2 SP1 cluster with MS Failover cluster. I have SCOM 2012 SP1 with latest OS MP (agent running with local system rights). All other cluster are showing fine performance counters
but this cluster does only show one cluster disk free space counters. It has 5 cluster disks (MBR formatted). Logical disk performance counters are running fine. So my questions:
What performance counters does the new "Cluster Disk % and MB free space rule" use? Is it the same old Logical Disk performance counter that collects data for example for drive C:?
What should I check from this cluster because performance view from my cluster groups are not showing all disks, just one and there are 5 cluster disks?
Only one Cluster Disk is showing under performance view!
Health Explorer from Cluster group shows all Cluster disks! We have this issue with normal Win server 2008 SQL servers. I can see disks at the Health Explorer view but no collection rules at the performance view. Rule does not have any overrides and it's enabled by default. We use the latest Core OS pack and Cluster
MP. IS this ANOTHER bug in the MS management pack? -

SharePoint 2013 - PowerPivot - The following connections failed to refresh.
Thanks for taking a look. I have tried countless blogs and other forum posts and can't seem to resolve this.
I am working on SP2013 with SQL Server 2012 in a single farm environment. My domain is on another VM.
I am using interactive refresh. (Click Data > Refresh All Connections) from the PP Workbook in SharePoint.
The connection is embedded.
I am getting the error "We were unable to refresh one or more data connections in this workbook. The following connections failed to refresh: (Name of my connection). The connection is using windows authentication
What I have tried:
I have checked ULS Logs, nothing showing up unfortunately.
I checked local system messages on server, nothing there.
I changed both the PowerPivot and Excel Services application pools to run under Domain\Administrator
I changed both the PowerPivot and Excel Services unattended accounts to run under Domain\Administrator
Ran IISReset command from windows powershell.
Restarted SSAS Services
Verified the Server was registered in Excel Services (Data Model Settings)
Verified that data refresh was enabled on the PowerPivot workbook at the site collection level.
In central administration I set the business hours to 6am - 8am for data refresh so this would not be an issue.
I verified that the Secure Store Service is started in central administration
I have also ran SQL Server Profiler and all I see is this error, i'm not even sure it's related. Searching the error hasn't helped:
"The commit or rollback request cannot be completed because there is no active transaction in this session."
I verified that Claims to Windows Token Service is running in central administration.
I've tried editing the workbook connection to use specified accounts as well. When I do that I get the following error:
An error occurred while accessing application id SP2013\Administrator from the Secure Store Service. The following connections failed to refresh: (My connection name).
Any help or direction would be much appreciated. Thanks.did you try below technet guide?

What is the difference between Logical Disk and Physical Disk?
Hi.
When I do Performance Monitor, I got Logical Disk Avg. Disk sec/Write counter and Physical Disk Avg. Disk sec/Write counter.
But I can see the different Avg. value and Max. value.
Even if Logical and Physical Disk are one-to-one mapping.
Why did i get the result?
One the other hands, I got a same result that Logical Disk Avg. Disk sec/Read counter and Physical Disk Avg. Disk sec/Read counter's Avg. value and Max. value.Physical Disk refers to an actual physical HDD (or array in a hardware RAID setup), whereas Logical Disk refers to a Volume that has been created on that disk.
So if you have one disk with one volume created on it then the values are likely to be 1 to 1, but if you have multiple volumes on the disk, for instance a physical disk with C:\ and D:\ volumes running on it, then the logical disks relate to c:\ and d:\
rather than the disk they're running on.

"Initialization of the DLL C:\WINNT\System32\NIPALU.dll failed. The process is terminating abnormally"
The card tests OK with MAX2.0 and if I open the test panel first and then compile the exe, it works. So what exactly is the initialization Im missing but happens in MAX ?? While using PCI-6503 with Windows NT 4.0 SP6, and NI-DAQ 6.8.1 or 6.9, is there any initialization that a C++ program needs to do before trying to write to DIO lines ? I have a program in C++ which works fine (writes and reads the DIO lines from PCI-6503) IF I run it after opening the test panel for PCI-6503 in MAX 2.0. Otherwise it gives the following error..
"DLL Initialization failed
Initialization of the dynamic link library C:\WINNT\System32\NIPALU.dll failed. The process is terminating abnormally."
The PCI-6503 tests OK using either NI-DAQ 6.8.1 or 6.9 and I can read write to the DIO lines using the MAX2.0's test panel. Also my program works fine if before compiling the code I open the test panel for PCI-6503 in MAX2.0, so I suspect there is some initialization Im missing in my program. Can someone educate me more on this. Thanks. Are you using ComponentWorks++ or just the NI-DAQ C interface?

Logical Disk Performance counter for cluster shared volume on Hyper-V
Hello All,
I am trying to collect counters like latency, queuelength from Win32_PerfFormattedData_PerfDisk_LogicalDisk WMI class.
Output of "Name" attribute for logical disks in this class as below:
Name: _Total
Name: C:
Name: E:
Name: HarddiskVolume1
Name: Q:
Name here doesn't show the actual label so I queried Win32_Volume class and wanted to join with performance WMI class. Out put of Win32_Volume is as below:
Caption: E:\
Label: New Volume
Name: E:\
Caption: Q:\
Label: Quorum
Name: Q:\
Caption: C:\
Label: Voume C
Name: C:\
Caption: F:\
Label: SAN
Name: F:\
Please note that "Name" attribute matches for all except one with label "SAN". This is cluster shared volume and "Name" attribute value is "HardDiskVolume1" in Win32_PerfFormattedData_PerfDisk_LogicalDisk class.
Is this is a configuration issue or any other alternative to get volume label and corresponding performance counters.
Thanks in advance
Regards,
UdupaHi Udupa,
I haven't found a better way, if you want to combine the two script, please refer to the script below:
$output=@()
$volumes = gwmi Win32_Volume
foreach($volume in $volumes){
$match=($volume.name).TrimEnd("\")
$counter=gwmi Win32_PerfFormattedData_PerfDisk_LogicalDisk |where{$_.name -eq $match}
$Object = New-Object PSObject
$Object | add-member Noteproperty name $volume.name
$Object | add-member Noteproperty label $volume.label
$Object | add-member Noteproperty AvgDiskQueueLength $counter.AvgDiskQueueLength
$output += $Object
$output
I hope this helps. -

What is wrong with Acrobat Pro, and why is it acting up without any changes to my system, printer, software, etc? This problem began about a week ago, after YEARS of using Acrobat without any issues.

Hello
I am currently on SCOM 2007 R2 CU6 and Window Server Operating System MP version 6.0.6989.0 (I cannot use the latest version of the MP as we still have some Windows 2000 Servers we need to support, yes I know :( )
Any way the issue is, I have never found the Logical Disk performance counter data very reliable from SCOM.
For example, I have a Windows 2008 R2 Server and when looking at a local Logical Disk (which holds an SQL temp DB on a busy SQL Server) and look at the performance counter
The SCOM collection rule is called "Collection Rule for Average Disk Seconds per Transfer"
The actual Windows Perfmon counter is called "Avg. Disk Bytes/Transfer"
if you look at the description of the above Perfmon counter it is described as
"Avg. Disk Bytes/Transfer is the average number of bytes transferred to or from the disk during write or read operations."
The problem I have is as follows:
The resulting SCOM performance chart over several days (which has a scale ox 1x) states the value never reach 3 (e.g. maximum wa s 2.7 say). I cannot believe the a drive holding the tempDB databases for a busy SQL Server does not transfer more then 2.7 "bytes"
of data at a given to to its tempDB databases!
Indeed when I look at Permon on the Server and looks at this counter over say 20 minutes or so, the figure is often in the 10,000 or 30,000 bytes etc. It does fall back to 0 (zero) momentarily but mostly it is in the 1000s, or 10,000s etc.
Therefore when my boss says show me the "Avg. Disk Bytes/Transfer" and SCOM says it has not exceeded 2.7 over the last business week (i.e. the chart never peak above this value on the chart with scale 1x) he naturally does not believe it!!
Any advice please regarding the above. Is it the fact if the counter ever falls to zero it messes up the SCOM report charts?
Thanks

AAnotherUser__Create your own collection rule, to mirror the sample times, and what not. Look at the data from your rule vs the mp default rule. It probably has to do with the chart scale imho.

One of the SAN logical disk of windows 2008 not discovered as logical disk in SCOM 2007R2.
Hi,
Anyone can advise where should i check to make the discovery work. i have rename/restart the health service folder/scom agent on the problem windows 2008 server. it still cannot discover the logical disk which make the monitoring of logical disk not possible.Hi,
Microsoft introduced 'SAN Policy' in Win 2008 (Enterprise and Datacenter Edition only) which causes SAN disks to not be available on startup by default, as a protection mechanism. You have to use the Diskpart.exe utility to set the policy of the disks
on that server to make them come up after a restart.

Vishva's advice was correct but incomplete, the important part that was missing is that you need to replace ALL occurences of the word 'internal' with 'external' when you hexedit the file he recommended, I found the following web link with the full instructions.
http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20070591-263.html
Incidentally, when I tried to edit the file directly I was given an error saying it was read only and wouldn't allow me to edit it, so what I did was save the file to a new name, make all the edits and then copy the new file into the correct directory, then using terminal issue the following commands
cd /System/Library/Frameworks/DVDPlayback.framework/Versions/A
then once you are in the directory containing the old and new framework file you need to copy the old file to a backup name for safe keeping, so issue the following command:
sudo cp DVDPlayback DVDPlayback-backup
Then rename the new file you created (replace {yourfile} with the name you stored it as!) to the live one using:
sudo cp {yourfile} DVDPlayback
If you list the files in this directory using the following command you should see all the files and their ownership and permissions:
ls -alh
all files should be owned by 'root', if the newly created file is owned by your username, in my case it was, then you can change its ownership by typing the following:
sudo chown root DVDPlayback
I then exited terminal, rebooted just to be on the safe side, and hey presto the DVD drive now works perfectly, shame apple didn't put something in place in mavericks to check for this, maybe they will in future updates...
Hope this helps anyone having the same issues, and thanks Vishva for pointing me in the right direction! -
Need to separate drive alerts with Logical Disk Free Space monitoring in SCOM 2012
I have an interesting need here to separate our SCOM alerts for Logical Disk Free space so that one alert is for OSSystem drives ONLY (C:/D:) and the other monitor alerts on all APP drives only (E:, etc). So far we have had great success using Kevin Holman's
blog post.
http://blogs.technet.com/b/kevinholman/archive/2009/11/24/writing-monitors-to-target-logical-or-physical-disks.aspx
We have overrides set so that the monitors report ONLY the percentage of free space left and ignores any MB threshold. So far so good, the alert comes in that host A reports low disk space on D: at 2.345...% free or host B reports low disk space on F: at
4.567...% free space etc. Now that we have our monitors working within the Windows Server classes Logical Disk, we need to set these monitors so that one is just for C or D drives with the alert named system Logical Disk Free Space OS Disk Warn and the other
monitor just reports on E - Z drives (excluding C or D) with the alert named Logical Disk Free Space APP Disk Warn.
We are very new to SCOM so I made the rookie mistake of creating a dynamic group for all Windows Server 2003 Logical Disk class that only includes Device Name = C or D. But found out too late you cant point a monitor to a group, it has to target a class.
And using the current monitors we set up with the above blog uses the correct logical disk class, but it doesnt care what instance (device Id = value), it will report low disk space on ANY logical drive. How in the world can we separate and exclude these monitors
so that one alerts only on OS disks (C and D) and the other only alerts on app disks (E through Z)?Hi Kevsharp,
Quite confusing after reading your question.
So based on your requirement, What i understand is you need separate alerts for all the drives of the disk is running at low or out of space right ?
For the above just create a simple performance counter monitor and use the same counters as kevin has used in his blog.
Now Target: Use Windows server operating system (This will target all the Windows operating system agents in your SCOM. If the specified discovery MP's are installed).
Set a threshold Below 10% is critical or what ever. You will get the alerts in your console.
