Jittery footage with Sony NX5u

Not sure if this is a camera question or editing, but I'll try the question in this forum first.
I've filmed a dozen projects with my new Sony NX5u cameras but am just now getting around to editing the first one (big mistake ).
Video is SD 720x480 60i. When I play it back it is fine on the computer monitor as well as the HD preview monitor (although the interlacing is bad - separate question probably) but when I burn it to DVD using iDVD and play it back on a regular SD television (not flatscreen / HD) it plays back very jittery, as if I filmed it with 1/30 shutter speed or in 24p and wasn't smooth. Even the static shots jitter but it's much worse with pans. The above setting on this camera should be the same as my older tape cameras (Panasonic DVX 100 series), right? 30 fps equals 60i.
First off, could this be a camera issue or an editing/settings issue? Secondly, is there a fix?
Oh, I have tried adding the deinterlace filter and MAYBE there is a slight improvement but not much.
Thank you very much,
Eric

  • Editing footage with sony HXR-MC50E what cable or program do I need to transfer

Editing footage with sony HXR-MC50E what cable or program do I need to transfer footage to computer and into Final Cut Pro?
I am editing with Final Cut Pro
    I have a Mac
My footage is on the HXR-MC50E

One small correction-- you do not use File-->Import. You must use Log and Transfer in FCP 7 or Import From Camera/Import Media in FCP X. In FCP 7 the clips will be automatically converted to ProRes upon import. In FCP X you can choose to work with the native files (re-wrapped to .mov) or you can optionally transcode to ProRes. When importing in FCP X, enable the 'create optimized media files' option to convert to ProRes. If you do not enable this option the files will remain in their native codec.

  • Unable to capture Canon HDV footage with Sony v1u camera

I'm trying to capture hdv footage filmed with a canon video camera with my sony v1u.  My sony footage captures as it should, but the canon footage, although playing fine on the sony camera, will not capture to cs4.  Any suggestions?

Check all camera settings and make sure they match the original filming mode on the other camera... and veryify your PPro settings match
If that doesn't work, try http://strony.aster.pl/paviko/hdvsplit.htm

  • Log and Transfer: Jittery Footage with AVCHD

I have a Canon HFS10, and I'm importing the footage to FCP 7. Whatever codec I select, the footage shows jittery banding (don't know the pro term) on any kind of movement. Oddly, the least problems occur with Apple 422 Proxy, which, as I understand it, is an offline codec. I have a feeling there's some setting somewhere I'm overlooking. I've fiddled with all the Log and Capture preferences: Plain Stereo etc. I'm in the UK, so my footage is PAL. I'm using Canon's MXP setting for shooting the footage, which is the highest setting: 1,920x1,080 res., but I get the same problem with the FXP setting, too. The footage plays back fine on the camcorder, and even in the log & transfer preview window.
Can anybody help? Tearing my hair out here, and there's not a lot of it left.

Actually, I may have found the solution. I've changed the camcorder's recording rate from 50p to 25fps, and now the footage imports beautifully. I don't know if this has affected the quality of the footage in any way, but it doesn't seem to have done so. I've a feeling it's something to do with interlacing. Any tech input would be appreciated.

  • Matching IPhone 4 Footage With Sony Ex1 On Timeline?

So just like title says I'm shooting a prank comedy show using the Sony Ex1 camera as master with several Iphone 4's (not the new 4os) as reaction shots and I was wondering what was the best way to set up my sequence or have the footage be the same so I dont have to render after every edit. Shoud I make all the footage Apple Pro Res through MPG Streamclip or whats my best option? Thanks for reading.

If you open the clip in fcp and hit command-9 you'll call up the clip settings.  Look under field dominance and if the settings is "none" it's probably progressive, otherwise interlaced.
Usually combining progressive and interlaced in the timeline will not require rendering to at least view.  But I'm not sure.  Should be an easy enuf test to run.
I'd use compressor to convert the footage, but running tests on your workflow is crucial in this kind of project.  The frames control pane in compressor has controls for scaling that can make a big difference in quality.  Remember, you can set ins and outs in the preview window in compressor to do a test on a small section of a clip.  You can also customize and save presets as you do tests.

  • Combining SD footage with Sony EX 1080p footage

    Hey All -
    I have FCP 7 -I have SD footage I ripped from a DVD (640x480)
I have Sony XDcam EX footage that was shot at 1920x1080p (23.97)
The Codec that the EX footage was converted to is Apple XDcam EX 1080p24 (35mb)
I have MPEG Steamclip or After Effects CS4 to convert the SD footage
I need to edit the SD footage in the XDcam footage timeline.
What are my options?? I know when you mix footage you usually have to render the footage.
Any work arounds for my situation?
    thanks
    Matt

    Hey Shane
Actually I havent had any problem playing the footage in a XDcam timeline -BUT I will take your advice into consideration
The final product is going back to DVD and compressed for the web -
I know this would be compressing the SD footage more but right now it doesnt matter. I was thinking of converting the DVD footage to QT -take that QT mov and make a 1920x1080 in After effects and put the SD footage inside of that and render that out so it will match the EX footage -that way I wont have to render in FCP.
I know the client is going to want to use some of the SD footage --I just wanted to make it as easy as possible for me when the client is sitting there editing it with me

Would like to know if avc hd footage from a sony nx5u-nxcam camcorder can be captured and edit on a pc.
    Probably not natively in CS4.
There wasn't native support until CS5... CS4 needed an add-on.

      PCIe 2.0 x16 - NVIDIA GTX570 #1 (card 1 driving 2 monitors)
PCI 1.0 - open (covered by NVIDIA Card)
PCI 1.0 - SATA 3 card (for 4 additional SATA ports)
       PCIe2.0  x16 - NVIDIA GTX570 #2 (card 2 driving 2 monitors, 4 monitors total)
PCIe2.0 x16 - open (covered by NVIDIA Card)
OS - WIN 7 Pro 64 bit (all the latest updates...Adobe & MS)
Additional - Black Magic Design MultiBridge Pro 2, Sony HVR-M25U VCR, HD monitor on Multibridge Pro HDMI output, 1000 Watt power supply,
2 internal BluRay burners, 1 internal DVD burner, 1 external BluRay burner
    Video drives - SATA 3 & outboard USB 2.0 (9 1/2 TB total space)
    OK Here the story…
I have a new Sony NX5U camcorder, I first shot in in HD 1080/60i, then I used Sony Content Manager to bring footage in, opened Premier 5.5, the footage looked jaggy.
On the next shoot, I changed to SD 480/60i, as the final edit was to be shown from a DVD, used Sony Content Manager to bring footage in, opened Premier 5.5, the footage looked jaggy.
I dragged the clip to the new item (New BIN)...  to set the presets the same as the footage.... the footage still looks jaggy
I even played back the footage on the camera, captured through the HDMI port on my Black Magic MultiBridge Pro, with the same results...
I exported (re-encoded) the footage as a H-264, also as a MS AVI...brought the footage back into Premier.... looked the same..
I set the sequence presets the same as I shoot… but to no avail…. My Sony PD150 footage looks better.
The footage jerks... not smooth... forget trying to pan...
Notice the telephone wires...not smooth... I call the effect "The Jaggies" (I believe the same as aliasing)... What am I doing wrong? See picture below (the video looks much worse than the picture shows)
the telephone lines look like stair steps... (but on the Sony flip out monitor... it looks great... also much smaller monitor, though)

    Try This:
copy footage from SD card to your HDD then use a Blackmagic preset AVCHD for a new sequence (don't use Standard def footage from these cameras). If you have a BM card you should have a TV connected if so what does that picture look like. When you putput via Encore burn a DVD  not a Blu-Ray and that will downscale for you.

  • Capturing HD footage with the Sony J-H3

I'm trying to capture 1080i/59.94 footage with a Sony J-H3 through firewire. I edited the capture preset for "DVCPRO HD - 1080i60 48 kHz" to have 59.94 FPS, 100% quality, and three different compression settings: none, uncompressed 10-Bit 4:2:2, and DVCPRO HD 1080i60. All of them were soft & pixellated. The DVCPRO HD 1080i60 setting was probably the worst, but the other two weren't much better. What kind of capture settings do I need to get nice crisp HD movs?

Not as HD, no. DVCPRO HD is a Panasonic format, and only the DVCPRO HD decks output that format via firewire. Sony's firewire HD format is HDV, but that is COMPLETELY different than HDCAM. No...if you look at the back of the deck, you will note that in that area of connections, it specifically states "DV."

  • Crash on Render every-time with Sony F7 footage

Working on a project with Sony F7 mxf files.
    On a Mac, 10.8.5, cc 2014, up-to-date.
Everytime I try to render out the sequence, Premiere Pro crashes.
I sent it to Adobe Media Encoder…and it crashes everytime (about 20 seconds in to rendering)
I've changed the codec and settings that I'm rendering to…crashes every-time.
I've copied the clips to a new time line with different settings… still crashes every-time.
removed files (like the music track), and turned off effects, … still crashes every-time.
Finally the only way I could get it to work: I copied the entire seq into after effects and rendered it from there, no crashes.
editing is smooth….just seems to be a major problem rendering.
Anyone know of a current issue / workaround?

Still no fix. I have new information.
The crashes still happen but it is when rendering to prores. If I render to "Animation codec", it works…..(huge files) but that's my current workaround.
I've updated all the adobe apps, the GTX 780 ti cuda/ nvida drivers, and all the apple security updates.
That's where it sits right now.
    Still crashing on render.

  • Shooting SD on a Sony NX5U

    Hi all
New to the forums so forgive the newbie question.
I just bought a Sony NX5U but I'm still shooting SD with my VX-2100s (mostly weddings). At this point I need to shoot SD with my NX5U to match footage with my 2100s. How do I shoot and bring in the SD footage into FCP 6.0.6? Thanks in advance for the help.

    Hi Larry,
Drop one of your VX2100 clips into a new sequence and click "yes" to the question, do you want to change sequnce settings to match clip settings. Then go to your sequence settings in the top menu bar and write down all the settings. Then go to MPEG streamclip, or whatever your using to convert, and use the exact same settings to convert your NXcam clips. Hope this works.

  • Unable to capture HDV with Sony HDR-FX1 in FCE 4

    Hello all,
Been using an HDR-FX1 for a while, shooting mostly DV, and today I began experimenting with HDV. I shot 8 minutes of footage with the camera in HDV mode.
When I setup FCE 4 for Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60, the capture window doesn't recognize the camera. However, if I set the FX1 to down convert to DV via firewire, FCE recognizes the camera and I'm able to capture.
How do I (or can I) capture HDV into FCE 4 with the FX1? Is there something (a setting perhaps) that I'm missing? Do I need to jump to FC Pro for this?
My system: 1.6 GHz PowerPC G5 (tower), 2 GB RAM, Sony FX1, FCE 4.0, QT 7.3.1
    Thanks in advance,
    tg

I had a similar issue with iMovie08 import using HDR-HC1... You may want to try this to see if it helps:
1> Close the import app (FCE, in your case)
2> Unplug the FW cable from the camcorder (Most important step)
3> Go into the Sony menu and re-select the HDV settings (explicit HDV, not Auto + Conv off) in the camcorder
4> Re-connect the FW cable, and restart FCE
I use these steps successfully while switching between HDV and DV imports from my camcorder using iMovie 08. Hopefully, this resolves your problem with FCE. Later this weekend, I plan to experiment (for the first time) with FCE HDV import to try and see the export quality difference between FCE and iM08 (which apparently downconverts everything to 540 lines!).

  • Trouble capturing HDV footage from Sony Z5U in FCE4 - any ideas?

I've shot about half an hour of HDV footage with the Sony Z5U. Have the computer at home connected to my Mac with a firewire. Tried with both firewires that I own. I've used a similar camera before to capture footage recently with no problems.
Gone through the Easy Setup in FCE4 and changed it to HD, HDV1080i60. In the camera, the VCR mode is set for HDV, the Video Out for Component says "1080i/480i", the down convert and DV wide convert are for letter box.
Any ideas on what the problem is? Do I just have 2 bad Firewire cables? or a bad port on my computer/camera?

Do you want to downconvert, or do you want to capture HD? Switch off downconvert. Switch off iLink.

  • FCP 5.1.2 upgrade now no communication with Sony FX1 HDV Camcorder

Hi - I recently upgraded to FCP 5.1.2 then tried to capture footage with my Sony FX1 HDV camcorder, but the software indicates that it cannot initialize my device. The only way it will work is when I change the capture settings to HDV Apple Intermediate Codec, but then this setting requires rendering.
The camcorder works fine in iMovie, so I know it is not that. If I reinstall FCP 5.1, then everything works fine, but not with the 5.1.2 upgrade.
I've also tried "trashing" my FCP settings for a fresh start, but nothing changed. I checked the settings on the camera, but they are fine. Again everything works in iMovie. Finally, I also removed the recommended QT files and reinstalled QT, but no change.
Any suggestions? I'd just stay at FCP 5.1, but I now have several projects in 5.1.2 that are not backward compatible.
    Thanks!

    G5 Quad   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

This worked for me. Probably something in this sequence caused Firewire, FCP or the Digital Mystery Gods to re-align:
    1. Simplify the Firewire routing among external hard drives. On its own this didn't produce a positive result, but it may have contributed somehow. In particular, avoid multiple loops among hard drives. Not a likely suspect, because the Z1U was directly connected to the front Firewire jack.
    2. From the FCP Install/upgrade/crossgrade disks, load the latest QMaster software. It's in the Extras folder and is called AppleQmasterNode.mpkg.
    3. Reload from the same upgrade disks a fresh FCP. It won't have the latest enhancements—and that may be an issue—but it will reload. Uncheck the rest of the options when loading this in. FCP seems to be the only program with a connection issue.
    4. Update the reload. Software update now brings FCP 5 up to FCP 5.1.2 but I would swear I saw 5.1.3 in the update download. Perhaps not. The result says 5.1.2 and now it recognizes what only iMovie HD had recognized before; the Z1U camera.
I know a lot of folks seem to have parallel-sounding issues. A lot of advice seems to focus on "toss the prefs", "fix the permissions", "sprinkle the chicken blood", etc. but none of those had any effect on this issue for me.
The one thing I THINK worked was the QMaster/FCP second re-upgrade.

  • How can I export m2ts footage with 5.1 audio in PP CS5.5?

    Dear All!
I have a 90 minutes project which made from 4 sequence. Sequence settings are the followings : AVCHD 1080p 25fps square pixels , 5.1 channel master audio.
I made the sequences from avchd file-s, which recorded with Sony HDR-CX700V with AVCHD 1080p 25fps and Dolby digital 5.1 sound.
Right now I finished the project with lots of effects and imported After effects compositions, and I cannot find any setting to create 5.1 sound.
I have Mainconcept codec suite, but this offer m2ts 1440*1080i settings only.( And I cannot configure the mainconcept codec settings.)
Do you have any idea how can I export the project without any degradation, and with 5.1 audio? The original footages recorded with this properties : H264/AVC - top field first - 22.000 Mbit/sec.
    And I use in the project some 720p H264/AVC - progressive - 8.001 Mbit/sec videos.
    Please help! Thanks a lot.

You have to consider a couple of things. Mixing 1080 and 720 material is best done in a 720 sequence, because uprezzing will seriously deteriorate quality, unless you accept black borders. That also means exporting a 720 format as maximum, unless again you accept serious quality loss. Whatever the resolution you choose, exporting AVCHD material to anything else than uncompressed, Lagarith or UT will entail a generation loss and thus quality loss. The best export settings are dependent on your delivery medium. DVD, BD or web.
Since you are working in a 1080 sequence, the quality loss of uprezzed 720 material is not a big issue, apparently, so what is the relevancy of 'the same quality' on export when you have already compromised quality?
