Jittery Image Motion

Hi,
I have an image (photoshop) which has thin black lines against a white background, and (as expected), it flickers when motion is applied. The de-flicker filter just adds a blur, but I was wondering if there's a way to actually thicken all the black lines? Is there a filter or combination of filters that can do that?
Thanks,
Lawrence

The flickering is an artifact of the interlaced nature of video. It is a result of very thin (often horizontal) elements that exist on one scanline as is common in text or titling (and your photo). This can also be the case in scanned images with great deal of detail with high contrast.
As the alternate fields play, the flashing element is essentially being turned on/off. The basic strategy is to get the element to exist over two scanlines so it is refreshed every time the field plays or to reduce the amount of contrast so the difference between ON and OFF is not noticeable.
Things to try (In increasing order of image degradation)
• (in FCP) field order>none
• (in FCP or Photoshop) reduce whites by 10% - reduces overly bright areas
• (in FCP) flicker filter - minimum
• (in Photoshop) motion blur>vertical> .2 - .5 pixels - blurs vertically only
• (In FCP or Photoshop) Gaussian blur> .2 - .5 pixels -blurs both horizontally as well as vertically
• (in FCP or Photoshop) deinterlace - throws away half the image and is generally not appropriate on scanned images
Remember: Unless you are viewing your work in the appropriate external NTSC/PAL monitor, you are playing blind. The computer monitor only shows you a proxy image.
good luck.

  • Native HDV Jittery Images in Self Contained Movies

    Hello,
I am having problems with HDV footage captured in native HDV 1080i60
When we output footage as Quicktime Self-Contained Movies the result is very JITTERY images.
Whereas when we print to video directly from the timeline, there is no such jittery effect.
We are thinking that it may be a conform problem with the keyframes in self-contained movies.
Any idea why this is occurring?
    Thanks,
    Marc Griffin

I'm having a very similar problem. Here's what I did.
1.) Edit my awesome HDV shot and HDV edited project.
2.) Export as a self-contained movie to transfer to another workstation for printing to video
3.) On other system open self-contained video in FCP and "print to video."
The process completed successfully, but when played back from tape, the footage is jittery. The self contained movie itself plays back fine in quicktime. I was wondering if it has to do with the compression of frames and what fcp does in the conforming process. Would ticking the checkbox "recompress all frames" fix this problem? I have not yet tried that as everything requires rendering. And even on a G5 quad it takes 25+ minutes to render / conform the video.
    Thanks,
    Kjell

  • Jittery images in menu

Never had this problem before. And I've got no idea what else to try.
I'm using a handful of still images in this DVD menu interface. Some are from a digital still camera. Some are video captures. But they're all jittery in the menu — not as I create the DVD — only after I burn it. And they're jittery +on my laptop screen+.
I've made sure the motion attribute isn't longer selected. I brought the images into Photoshop and exported them for video. But the jitteriness is still there. The only thing I haven't done is diminish the sharpness by putting a blur on all the images — it might help but the cost seems too high.
The odd thing is, I don't ever recall this happening before. The menu consists of one large background image and 4 smaller buttons. No text. All the images seem in flux between one field and another. Can't figure how to work around it. Ideas?

the images seem in flux between one field and another.
Try deinterlacing copies of the images in Photoshop to see if this is in fact an issue with the fields.
If your images are now stable, download JES Deinterlacer free, here: http://www.xs4all.nl/~jeschot/home.html and perform a field blend deinterlace on the images, this will give you better results because unlike Photoshop's deinterlace, it does not throw away half of your image.

  • Jittery Images

    Hello,
I am producing a short movie with a lot of images. I am doing the Ken Burns effect on most images although I seem to be running into an issue of the images jittering on screen when I keyframe a zoom in or zoom out on the image. Any possible solutions? I have seen this before but, never really came up with any conclusions since I just replaced some of the images. Thanks.

If these images are higher than your video resolution (720x480??) then it is often helpful to add some Vertical Motion Blur in Photoshop or Gaussian (very little) Blur in FCP.
This process minimizes (hides) the aliasing caused by interlaced video.

  • Image motion blur effect

    Hi,
Anyone know how to acheive these motion blur effects,

Before flash 8 we would use two images, blur and regular.
Blur can be very low quality so it's small in KBs and you
    can't
see the quality while tweening. Tho in that particular site
you can actually see how low quality it is as the tween
    happens
too slow. So, we would place blur image made in photoshop for
    zoom
animation, and jump to frame with clean sharp one once the
    tween
    is done.
Flash has has BLUR filter. You can convert your image into
    movie clip
and apply the filter to it.

  • Can't select "Variable Speed" for Still Image Motion

I am using FCP 5.1 to add motion to still images. I've placed my still images on the timeline and added the appropriate keyframes in the Motion tab of the Viewer to Scale, Rotate, and move the stills on screen to my liking. But the speed is locked to "Constant," and I want to change that.
Specifically, am rolling a still image on-screen, freezing it in the middle of the screen a few seconds, and then rolling it off-screen. Doing this is easy: I just add a keyframe and type in the off-screen coordinates, then add another keyframe and type in coordinates somewhere on screen. But I want to vary the speed that the image rolls on-screen, so it moves on-screen quickly but then gradually slows down until it finally stops (freezes) in the middle of the screen.
Unfortunately, the "Setting" popup menu under "Time Remap" in the Motion tab of the viewer is grayed out and locked to "Constant Speed" (and yes, my still image clip is indeed selected and being displayed in the view). I cannot figure out how to unlock that popup so I can select variable speed.
I can choose Variable or Constant speed just fine for any imported "video" clips -- only still images are locked to Constant for some reason. Is this just a feature limitation of FCP 5? Any ideas would be appreciated.
    Many thanks.

Why so much sarcasm in this FCP forum, Studio X?
Yes, it was in the manual, which by the way is quite large. And I didn't say how long it took me to spot that in the manual either -- a long time. I didn't spot it the first time I had read through that section (yes, I had read it before). And the fact is, you didn't know it either, otherwise you may have cared to point it out (for not only myself, but for others reading this forum too).
I participate in numerous other forums on other sites. Many times, people ask questions that are very simplistic to me -- I know the answers and I know those people putting forth the questions could easily have looked up the answer. Nevertheless, I take time to be helpful to others. For truly, some day I may be in their shoes, lacking time to read every part of every manual out there.
I am therefore thankful to those who likewise respond in a tactful manner to my queries, with the productive aim of helping others rather than condemning them. Thank you, David Harbsmeier, for being consistently positive and very helpful in this forum!

  • Image motion tween

I'm trying to motion tween jpeg image from one side of the
screen to another but by the motion everything gets so framey
    instead
running smoothly. I tried to convert image to the movie clip
    and I tried increase
number of frames and fps but with no succes. Image is still
    "jearking" while
moving across flash stage. Is there anything that can be done
    so that image moves smoothly?
    Beginer looking for help.....
    Appreciate your help,
    JM

ok, so it looks like the images are 'bigger' than the initial
image size, because you then 'zoom' in on it, so this is part of
the problem, because Flash has to recalc and draw the MC on every
iteration of the tween. Second, they are under a mask, right? Q
though - you're using a timeline tween correct?
So a couple of things that may help, first, in each MC that
contains an image, turn on the 'cacheAsBitmap' property, in the
    properties panel. try that.
If that's not enough, take the entire timeline containing the
image MCs and place it within a 'master' MC, find the dimensions
and placement of your mask in relation to the main timeline (ie.
global space), then remove it. Create a 'blank' MC with insert
Symbol command, place an instance on the stage at the x,y of the
mask's previous location. then in code use the 'scrollRect'
property to define the viewable area (the masks dimensions) you
will need to pass a Rectangle class object in the parameter. also
make sure to turn on the cacheAsBitmap property for the new symbol
instance. finally, place the 'master' MC in position within the new
    symbols timeline.
third, if that's still not enough, you could go a step
further and load the images into BitmapData objects and then place
them with code, but this is a lengthy process to explain, i think
maybe try some of these other things first.
additionally, you could change the timeline tween (assuming
that's what it is) to a Tween class code constructed tween series
and remove almost everything from the timeline.

  • Final cut express gives a jittery image on my G5 iMac

I asked a similar question before and got some useful input but the problem still exists. When i enter a still image then zoom in with the motion tools in FCE the image moves around unevenly in the frame. When I Render the images in the Timeline, the problem gets even worse. I tried this with the same images on my old G4 450 with FCP 1.2 and it worked just fine- the way it's supposed to. Could there be a system problem with my iMac G5?

First I tried flicker filter, and it helped some of the photos, but others became even worse! (The entire image shakes now instead of just portions.) I removed the flicker filter and tried the de-interlace filter, and that produced about the same results. I would try editing the photos separately in Adobe Photoshop, but before I delve into that I would like to set up an external video monitor. Unfortunately I've wasted about two days, and I can't seem to get it to work. I first tried by connecting the iMac to a Sony camcorder and connecting the camcorder to the video port on my television. No joy. Then I tried connecting the iMac via a mini-DVI to video adapter to my television. I thought my old television might be the problem, so I connected instead to the video port on a projector, and it still didn't work! I've changed the display settings and deleted certain preferences files, to no avail. My iMac doesn't seem to recognize the external display. I'm beginning to doubt this Mac purchase. Thanks for any help you can provide!

  • Jittery image on VGA projectors with MBP

Recently I have had trouble projecting presentations from my MacBook Pro (15", early 2011, OS 10.8.3, 8 GB RAM) to several different VGA projectors. I am using a mini-Display to VGA adapter and use 2-screen mode (not mirroring). Initially, everything is fine - the projected image looks clean, but after a while, lines start to zigzag and jitter - as if someone was physically bumping the projector (or like a bad TV signal). This gets progressively worse and makes it nearly impossible to give a professional presentation (which I am required to do for my job). I have bought a brand-new miniDisplay-VGA adapter - no improvement! I am very careful to make sure that connections and cables are all solid. The same problem does NOT exist for external monitors hooked up via DVI or HDMI adapters/cables. Any suggestions/ideas?

  • Jittery image

I have limited experience with FCP so I am sorry to take up your time with this question.
I already have one project on the go which when I preview looks fine, the image is as it should be and each clip of the movie plays through successfully.
I have just opened a new tab to make a new edit of the same material, and when i cut and paste clips from the old to the new tab and play them back, the image pulses every few seconds. Different clips pulse to a different degree, but in general they all have a problem.
Please could someone help me outta this jam
    thanks
    kP

have just rendered all, and some of the clips are still pulsing every other second. Its only slight, but definitely doesn't happen on the other edit...help much appreciated...

  • Still image jpg w/ motion is chopy during playback

    Greetings,
In FCE4 I have added a few still images which are approximately 500kb in size to a sequence.  Motion has been applied to the stills, basically zooming out slowly in a Ken Burns way.  During playback the motion is smooth when viewed in the Viewer but is chopy when viewed in the Canvas.  What can be done to make the still image motion smooth in the Canvas?
    Thanks, Scott

Make sure the Sequence is rendered fully.

  • Smooth Slow Motion

I am looking for a way to create 50 percent slow motion based on odd and even fields. Instead of replicating the odd or even field to make a 15 frames per second, jittery, slow motion, I want to separate the odd and even field, and then interpolate the missing half frame, thus producing a 30 frame per second smooth motion clip that is based on the 60 half frames per second frame rate of video. I know this can be done because Premiere does it automatically. Note: I am not trying to make smooth motion where there is a half translucent image of the preceding frame always on top of the current frame.

Okay, I think Graeme Nattress wrote a plugin to do that, but here's a way to do it in FCP...
Cut your clip on V1 and V2, slow each down 50% with no frame blending. On each clip put the de-interlace filter, on V1 take it from field 1, on V2 take it from field 2. Now apply the blink filter and set it for 1 frame on and 1 frame off. This way it will take first one frame from V1, then one from V2, etc...
Mind you this is a lot of monkey motion, but it should give you the effect you are looking for.
    Try it, post back...

  • Changed sequence setting on timeline - now exports jittery . . .

Editing in HD from clips shot with Canon XH A1. Have exported a couple of projects with no issues using Print to Tape. This short project's clips are 1440 x 1080. Sequence setting was 1280 x 1080 (?). So changed sequence setting to match clips. When printing to tape, images are very jittery (blurry motion). I assume I haven't made the correct adjustments. Any help appreciated.

If you have Final Cut Pro 6, try this:
    • Create a new sequence using the appropriate Easy Preset.
    • Copy and paste one clip into the new sequence.
    • If the program asks if you want to change the sequence settings to match the clip, select yes. If it doesn't ask, it means your sequence settings match the clip.
    • Cut and paste the rest of the material from the old timeline to the new one.
    Good luck.

  • Save an unencoded iDVD disc image to encode/burn with Toast?

    Hi:
I'm geting jittery image on playback (only in certain scenes) when I use iDVD to encode my disc. If I use Toast to encode and burn, there's no problem, using the same blanks and burner. I saw a post here from someone who said you can save a disc image from iDVD, but then have Toast encode it and burn it; in the help files it always says iDVD encodes its disc images. Any ideas, or any other suggestions as to the jittery playback on a few scenes?

It could be the DVD media you're using or player, etc. If you create a disk image and use DVD Player software to view it, that should be pretty much what to expect on DVD-R playing in a good quality DVD player.

    File/Save As Disc Image...

This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Disk Utility to burn the DVD.
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (not the .img, the one below) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. Your SuperDrive tray will open. Insert a recordable DVD. (DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and Tiger.
b Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD 5 project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)
