Jittery windows iMac 24

A quick pointer for anybody getting jittery window/mouse movement on boxfresh silver iMacs:
I took delivery of a new 24" iMac 2.8 at the weekend, and right out of the box, the movement of the windows around the screen and the mouse movement through menu selection etc was very jittery - jumping through menus, and the window movements on the screen looked like it used to on old CRTs when refresh rates were set wrong.
I was worried - as it was brand new and only built 15 days ago in Czech republic. Having used Macs everu day almost for 17 years, knew something was up. A short call to AppleCare fixed it in a matter of minutes. A simple resetting of the PRAM that he talked me through and all seems perfect - easier than expected when i thought I'd have to swap it out. Cheers AppleCare!
Only gripe: a tiny speck of dark dust inside the screen behind the glass. No sign of gradient/lighting problems yet. Will take a close look this week.

  • Can't make it to the login window iMac G5 10.5.8

When I turned my iMac on this morning it went through all of the "normal" steps (gong, grey screen, apple logo, progress wheel, blue screen) and stopped at the blue screen. Thinking it was just a fluke, I shut the machine down and restarted, only to have it stop at the blue screen.
After disconnecting everything going into the iMac, I booted into safe mode but it stopped at the blue screen again.
I flashed the PRAM (big gong, single quieter gong) and afterwards it came to the same stopping point.
I reattached my external drive and was able to start using my 2-day old backup into both my regular account and my "test" account (without login items). Now I want to try and figure out my login problem. Any ideas?

Reverted to previous day's backup, started fine afterwards.

  • IMac won't launch in mac, stuck in Windows, iMac won't launch in mac, stuck in Windows

I installed BootCamp last year and have been running OSX and W7 happily for all that time.
Just recently, I've had some problems when booting up my computer, it sometimes won't bring up the statup menu and just launches itself straight into Windows.
Now this has got worse. It won't open Mac at all and always launches straight into Windows. I've tried holding ths shift key rather than option key to start some disk repair but nada... I've also checked all USB sockets and a new keyboard to see if that was the problem but again, nothing. It's definitely not the keyboard or USB ports.
Also, just around the time this started happening ti started kicking itself out of sleep mode. If I put it into sleep mode a few seconds later it will start up again. Basically I can never turn it off, or sleep it. And now I can't even turn it on.
And it went out of warranty two weeks ago

    Thanks.
I don't have the disc on me (moving 3 times in 6 months means my stuff is scattered all over the place) but I guess putting that in and running the diagnostic checks on it might revive it?
Gutted because it went out of warranty so little time ago. I guess if the hard drive is dead then it's just a big lump of metal. Even worse that I'm a computing student, and a degree in computing without a computer is going to be tough!

  • MacBook Pro with Retina display to imac

    Hi
Can i connect a MacBook Pro with Retina display to a mid 2010 imac 27"    ?    in ANY way?     to use as a second screen... HDMI to mini display.. ive a feeling  i know the answer but its worth asking.....
    thanks!

Ha, "their" my teenagers would certainly point that out.
"true to say the imac isn't the most upgrade friendly"
Well it's just taking that front glass and the LCD off. The earlier ones had the hidden latches and the special tool to release it. "Took quite a technique to remove it. I just did one where someone had just broken the latch and glued it back.
"i just replaced the dvd drive, i could never go back to mechanical."
That's for sure. As soon as I put my first SSD in this early 2011 MBP 13" I realized that there was a reason why all the Airs could get buy with just 2 or 4 GB RAM.
    "currently budget isn't an issue"
    That must be nice.
"this is testament to apple - there is no way a pc would have held up this well,"
Yes, I'm still using a 20" and 2 22" ADC Apple Cinema Monitors on my workbench w/ a 2002 Power Mac MDD G4, a 2011 Mini i5 and a 2006 iMac. There's a working SE and IIfx in the closet.
    " initial pain of purchase"
Yup that IIfx originally cost $9,900 in 1990. I got it for half price!
There's a 27" iMac for sale here in the NW. I'm looking at it to replace the Core 2 Duo.
"imac is still a great machine with a georgeous screen"
Yup until last year I administered 88 PCs at a charter school. I found looking at those displays and jittery windows all day long really irritating. Of course I'd try to "2 finger scroll" and use "Gestures" to move to a new desktop until I remembered "Oh right, PC, crap."
Good luck and thanks for the checkmark.

  • IMac Dead, What to do?

I have never had any problems, we love our imac. Unplugged it yesterday a.m. when we went away for the wk-end, now, when we plug it in and try to start, nothing.
I am having problems typing this on my husband's laptop from work,it is a pc,and doing all sorts of strange things. Anyway,we have not opened the back----if we do, and try to do some of the things suggested in this forum, will that negate or be a probem with Applecare? I received this computer on or around 2-14-05, I have Applecare for 3 years. So should we try the lcd stuff, or just call them? I have looked up the registration numbers, and I believe mine is in the last batch of computers with problems,so not totally unexpected, but as I said, never any problem before.
I am so disappointed. In shock, really. And I think this stupid windows laptop has a virus, as sometimes what I typeends up in the previous paragragh. My apologies, and my humble submission. Thank you in advance, and I knowfor sure now,I hate using windows.

Hi jada. I'd certainly ring them first in your situation. They may well walk you through the process of undertaking an SMU reset over the phone.
You won't void your warranty by simply following the startup / SMU reset instructions in http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300908 though. The "first generation" and "ALS" models are designed for a certain amount of "user service". Its only the iSight and dualcore Intel models that you shouldn't open the back of.
But first of all, have you made sure that you aren't simply suffering from the power cord problem discussed at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86817 ?
    Cheers

There will be a small dot at the bottom center of the mail list window (which is the minimized preview window). Either double click on that dot or drag that up to resize your preview window.

  • Accessibility & User Accounts

    Hi,
After all the great help on my first set of questions, and looking around the FAQs etc., I'm back
My wife is partially sighted. On my Windows XP system, she has her own user account with certain settings, eg. lower resolution to give larger screen elements. Larger font size, a large, brightly coloured mouse pointer etc. These setting are unique to her account, and have no affect on my account, which is high resolution and small icons / text.
I know icons and text can be made bigger in Tiger, but can the mouse pointer be changed? She has a really big pointer that is a bright colour on XP. Also, do the user accounts work the same way in Tiger? I'd like to set her up with what she needs without affecting my own account.
My iMac isn't here yet, so I'm getting all the information ready so I can set up and get underway with minimum fuss.
    Cheers,
    Pete.

  • Bluetooth as an audio device

After successfully installing a BT phone (Motorola V3 Razor) I noticed that Audi and Midi setup shows the phone as being available for both audio input and audio output. I did not figure out how to use it. Is there any reading material (I could not search or google any)?

    I have SonyEricsson HBH65 Headset.
I go to System Preferences - hardware - bluetooth
    Add device
Push the combination of buttons on the headset you notmally use for pairing with the telephone
Enter the pairing code (in my case 0000) on the Apple
You should now see the headset
Go to Audio midi set up
Choose and setup values for your headset. It should appear in the scroll windows.

  • Folder Icon Customize

Hello it's me again, the Mac newbie. Thanks all for the prev. help.
Here is the new question, How can I "paste" a picture on my existing folders icon?
In other words, I want to maintain the "folder icon" , that looks like a folder, you know , the blueish colored manila folder just like the standard ones that are on a Mac. This can be done with the folders on a PC. It makes it easier to differenciate between a folder with data in it and just a picture file.
In previous posts I have figured out how to change the folder icon into a little picture icon. And that is fine.
But what I really want is the Folder Icon with the original manila folder look, But ,,I want to PASTE a picture onto it, know what I'm talking about? Again this can be done quite easily with a pc by clicking on properties, then clic on "customize folder icon",,so with so many of us ex pc er's switching over I am sure that someone has figured this out.
If you have please help. thanks, Mo

There is fasticns ,which is fast and easy at http://www.digitalwaters.net/progetti/ing/2006/09/08/fasticns.html
And for copying and pasting icons I use a Contextual Menu plugin called FinderIconCM http://www.pixture.com/software/macosx.php so I can Right click on the item or folder and change icon with out the hassle of bringing up the info windows.

  • Raging

I had a windows laptop and ran my Adobe Photoshop CS6. Last year I bought an iMac. I was told by Adobe customer services that I could run photoshop across my two machines. I/e windows & iMac. They sent me a disc for my iMac and for the past year I have running it successfully on both windows laptop and iMac.
I recently had to reformat my windows hard drive. When I tried to reload my windows photoshop it tells me that the serial number has been revoked. Spoke to Adobe last week only to be told that although i can run it on two machines, i can't run it across two different platforms (not what i was originally told !!)
I visited the Photography Show in Birmingham at the weekend. I headed to the Adobe stand and asked the question. Can i use it across windows and mac. The Adobe representative confidently told me that because i had reformatted my drive without uninstalling the software this was why it was saying it was revoked. He told me to contact customer services and assured me they would sort it as i can definitely use it on windows and mac so long as it isn't more than 2 machines.
Contacted Customer services today and they are still saying that I can use it across two machines but it has to be the same platform on both machines.
I'm so angry as I don't see why I should be penalised because my two machines are different operating systems, yet if i had two of the same there would be no problem.
Surely someone at Adobe can override this decision ?????

Perpetual CS licenses are platform specific, and always have been. You can run it on two machines, but you cannot do so on different platforms. You can switch platform if you have a current release (or upgrade to one), but from that point the other, old serial number is void and useless and will be revoked by Adobe.
    These are the facts.
Are you absolutely sure you didn't misunderstand at the time? That they gave you a "cross-grade" and expected you to destroy the Windows version?

  • What time of day was the email sent?

I used to be able to see the time of day that email was sent, along with the date. Now, only the date appears. What happened? How can I get the time of day back? Thanks.
    imac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

What mail program are you operating? What version? I have Apple's Mail v. 1.3.11 (OS X 10.3.9) program running and in my inbox I see both the date and time received and date and time sent. If that's the program you are using, is your column wide enough to display both date & time? If not, widen the column by pointing to the right column divider line and drag it farther to the right. Also, the date is on the extreme left, the time on the extreme right of the column, so if your column is very wide you might not see the time unless you scroll to the right or expand the window.

  • How can I use my printer ?

    hi everyone.
    I'm a new mac user
My printer is connected to a windows XP PC. My PC is connected directly to my router and my mac is connected wirelessly. I have bounjour on my PC but I can't print anything. I enabled printer shering on windows.
iMac (intel)   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Hmmmmm. The only suggest I have is to remove the PC firewall bingings - just turning off your firewall doesn't mean that it's still not blocking the ports.
Navigate to: Start>Control Panel>Firewall>Advanced:Uncheck mark all of the connections listed in the first box. Click ok.
Depending on your router, you may also need to open up the 5353.
Lastly, I'm going to add a printer step by step on the Mac-Are you selecting more printers, then windows?
Let us know how that works out.

  • Black screen with triangle and question mark

I was rotating some pictures in iPhoto (11-9.5) and all of a sudden in the large image window there is now a black window with a triangle and question mark in the middle. Nothing I can do makes this go away so I can enlarge my pictures in this window. iMac 2009, OSX 9. Please help!
    Thank you
    Carl

    OT,
Thank you. This didn't solve the problem. I saw somewhere in another post about doing some more manipulations but I was too uncertain. I called Apple. The first problem was I had a problem in my disc that had to be solved through a series of manuvers I don't remember. Then I was referred to a senior tech for the iPhoto issue. We spent several hours altogether on this. If I understand it correctly, some of my photos from the earliest time were converted into PSD files. The originals could not be found anywhere on my computer. The PSD file could not be worked with in iPhoto and that was why I got that symbol. I have a time capsule that fortunately had data far enough back we could retrieve JPGs. Again through a series of manuvers I don't remember we brought those up, deleted the PSD files, and put in the JPEG files. Seems to be working now.
    Thanks again,
    Carl

  • Anyway to get alarms when log in if they came due when machine was off

I am new to ical. Decided to try it this time instead of shareware I have used previously. Big negative is that if an alarm is due when the machine is off, then it never runs.
Is there any way to make an alarm run if the machine was off when it was due --say on login.
My old shareware kept up the notices of an event or a to do item with an alarm on log in until it was marked completed. This was a useful, almost essential feature.
Is there any way to fix this using a script? I don't know how to do scripts yet but if this could be my fix, I would appreciate instructions.

Send a message to your cellphone.
First add your mobile phone and/or pager email addresses to your card in Address Book:
Open the Address Book application program.
Choose Show My Card from the Card menu.
Click Edit to edit your card.
Click the "+" button next to the email field to add an email address.
Choose Custom from the pop-up menu.
Type a label for the address such as "pager".
    Click OK.
Enter the email address of your pager or mobile phone in the Email field.
Click Edit to save the changes.
To add an email alarm to an event:
Create or select the event in the iCal window.
Choose Get Info from the Edit menu.
Click the Alarm tab (bell icon) in the Event Info window.
Click "Send e-mail to me at" to enable that option.
Select your pager or mobile phone email address from the pop-up menu.
Set the alarm time using the time field and pop-up menu.
    Close the Event Info window.
