JMF capture of Firewire on Laptop?

Hey guys! I am working on a medical imaging science fair project for school. I am using JMF to capture the images from the microscope's CCD camera. Right now I am using an ATI TV Wonder USB and it only captures at 320x 240 which does not produce enough resolution I need to run the machine vision algorithms. I was wondering how many people have had luck with firewire and JMF? What firewire card would you suggest for my laptop? Thanks!

When we start the Flash Media Encoder, there is an option for
"Microsoft DV" and we just use that.
If this doesn't appear as an option for you, download
WebCamDV from a company called Orange Micro. The program is only
like $20, but it makes your 1394 port look like a webcam. It will
then appear as a 'device' in encoder and you can use it for audio
and video.

HELP urgently needed: My Sandberg FireWire for Laptop will not start on my T60

Let me start with information on my T60:
OS information: Microsoft Windows XP
OS version: 5.10.2600 Service Pack 2
Processor: x86 Family 6 Model 14 Stepping 8
Memory: 3.135.856 kb
BIOS version: 2.09 (79ETC9WW)
Machine type-Model: 1951A47
I have just got a new Sandberg FireWire for Laptop, a PC Card with 3 6-pins connectiont. After inserting the card in the PC Card slot, the Windows Device Manager tells me that there are problems with the card. Looking at the 1394 Card Properties the status says:
"This device cannot start. (Code 10) - Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device."
The troubleshooter did not solve my problem. I have tried disconnecting, re-connection, shut down Windows and start again etc.
At Sandberg Help Desk they tell me that I have two slots in my laptop, one with a 16 bits bus and another with a 32 bits slots, and I should use the latter. It seems that I can use the lower slide only in my laptop and I cannot push the card into the upper slide. There is not enough room for it.
Here is what I found on Lenovo's support site on my type & model:
PC Card
Conforms to the PC Card Standard 95
Type II slot
Both the 16-bit Release 2.1 card standard and the 32-bit CardBus card are supported.

What should I do to solve my urgent problem!?

The status right now is:
The PC Card reader works on my T60
If I use a Firewire PC Card it will not start - as described above (on T60)
The PC Card work properly on my T61P - and I succeeded importing a video file from a digital camera using the Fireswire PC Card.
So what does a wise man do in this situation??
Please help me as I urgently need to know how to solve this serious issue!!
Have you got an idea? Can I import the video in another way??

If you mean iTunes Store accounts, there's really nothing for you to do. Just add the tracks to the iTunes library and play them. Music purchased prior to late-2009 will been to be authorized, though. Pull down Store > Authorize... and type the credentials of the Apple ID used to buy the tracks.
If you mean something else, please describe in more detail.

Capturing through firewire

is there a way to adjust the brightness as you capture footage through a firewire? does anyone know?

You cannot adjust it as you capture via firewire. That is a straight digital transfer. You can only adjust after you capture. Or if you had a capture card and the deck allowed for brightness to be adjusted upon output.
But via firewire...no.

Codec options for DV capture using Firewire

I have a number of DV tapes that I want to capture using Firewire. Instead of capturing them as DV files, is there any way to have them captured as MPEG-4 files? I am using CS3 and debating whether to upgrade ti CS5.5 Thanks for any help.

Short answer: nope.
Capture as dv-avi then convert.
Why do you want them as mpeg-4?
DV-avi is much easier to edit.

Capturing media on a laptop with only one firewire input

So, this question may or may not belong here: I have a MacBook Pro with its single Firewire port. I have an external firewire drive for my scratch disk. But how do I capture media from my tape-based Canon HV40 onto the external disk with only the one firewire port? Is there such a thing as a firewire Y-adapter (i.e. two into one) or is that even possible? I'm thinking I may have to capture one tape onto the laptop's drive, then disconnect the camera, connect the external drive, drag the files there, and finally, after all is done, let Final Cut know that the scratch disk has been changed and the media is not on the laptop drive any longer but on the external firewire drive. Suggestions welcome, please.

I realize that the slower device on a daisychain will mean that the fastest speed is limited by the speed of the slowest device
My understanding is the speed of the bus will be restricted if you have the SLOWER of the two devices connected directly to the computer. If it is: FW400>FW800>Computer, each device should connect at their normal speed.
In any case, count yourself among the lucky as Canon cams often will not work when connected on the same firewire bus with other devices.

Premiere Pro CS3 Capture Question (Firewire to USB Converter)

Does Premiere Pro CS3 support capture through a Firewire to USB Converter? More specifically, we have one particular PC laptop that does not have a firewire port, only USB 2.0. So we were thinking of getting a firewire to USB converter. Will that work for capturing footage from our Mini DV camera?
Camera is Canon XH-A1S HD and a firewire cable will be running from this camera to the firewire to USB converter, then a USB cable will be running out of the converter into the dual core laptop with Windows 7, 4GB RAM, Nvidia 460M video card.

Might work then again it might not. Have not heared of any positive results. In other words imo its a waste of money.
You need a real firewire connection.

HDMI Capture via Firewire

Are there any other options for capturing from HDMI over Firewire except for the AJA IO HD?

You want a box that will capture HDMI into it, and then firewire to the mac? There is only ONE box that does that and that is the AJA IOHD. The MXO2 and MXO2 mini capture HDMI, but they need the Express34 slot on a laptop, or PCIe connection on a tower.
For firewire, the IOHD is the only one that does HDMI HD and firewire.

Core i7 860 with 2 Hard Drives.
There is no firewire on it.

Unable to capture to firewire external

I'm new to final cut express ( just got it 2 days ago) and also I bought a G-drive mini 250GB firewire 800 external. I can capture to my internal, but when I have my firewire external connected, final cut express tells me it can't find any firewire camera, and when I try to capture, it tells me there is no device found. however, if I first connect my camera, my camera shows up in final cut express but my external won't mount. anyone have an idea what's going on. btw. my camera is a Canon Elura 80 minidv camcorder, and I have a 2.2 GHz macbook pro.

It's odd that I was able to capture to an external drive under Tiger, but have absolutely no joy doing so under Leopard (in either FCE or iMovie HD ... and, yes, I am using Canon cameras ... sigh). Perhaps I'm misremembering, but I seem to recall using Firewire Basic as the profile had been working for me.

FCS2 - JVC GY-HD101 UNABLE TO CAPTURE VIA FIREWIRE

hi everyone,
I have to capture some rushs shot in HDV with this camera model (very old one) via firewire.
No matter what, final cut doesn't recognize the camcorder.
I think I did all you have to do when you meet those kind of issues.
(went to easy setup 720p25, threw preferences away, check FW cable and so on...)
Can someone help me on this one please ?
I have to return the camcorder tomorrow and got to capture 5 hours before it.

Ok here's the test I made :
With a "classic DV" camcorder everything goes right in the system profiler , it recognizes the model. (rear and front ports)
With the JVC HDV camcorder system profiler says "unable to list the firewire device"
So I figure it's either the FW port on the JVC camcoder that is burnt, or maybe a firmware issue since it'a very old model.
Or simply this camcorder is not recognized by leopard.

Capturing from firewire to new macbook pro in FCS 7.0.3

I'm thinking about buying a new macbook pro but it doesn't have a firewire input and my camera (Sony HC9) uses that for output. Can I log and capture to FCP 7.0.3 through a firewire adapter or through the HDMI input on the computer. thanks.

This is one reason I got the new MBP that still has the firewire port. Lucky it was also the same model that came with the matte screen ... both are essential components!

Do I lose High resolution video signal when I capture through FireWire?

I have being reading that capturing through Aja Kona video card is an uncompressed video capture. does it mean, I lose some part of my HD resolution video signal when I capture it through fire wire? Could somebody explain me? Thanks.

No, capturing DV or HDV via firewire is a bit for bit transfer of the original recording ... zero loss.

Final Cut Capturing & multiple firewire feeds

Hi,
Camera --> firewire to dv repeter (link here - this is supposed to multiply the feeds --> then one firewire from dv repeter is going to the live mixer and another firewire feed is going to a mac which live captures everything from the camera.
Problem: if 2 or more feeds are connected then fcp6 or 7 quits/crahses. Deck keeps recording. if only one feed is connected going to the mac with fcp, and no other firewire is connected to the dv repeter, fcp keeps capturing.
With imovie 8, I can record both on the deck and on with imovie. However imovie records only .dv from the feed and there is no way to make it record .mov files which will play fine in fcp. Plus in .dv file audio and video are not separate tracks.
Any walkaround this? Any other similar device like dv repeater?

1. Are you using a Firewire switcher? What do you mean by "multiply the feeds?" The device you linked to is for using multiple devices - not to "multiply the feeds."
2. Yes, it's true. FCP can only capture from one Firewire stream at a time ... it's always been that way.
If you're using a Firewire switcher, it should have more than just one output.
FWIW, when I setup for multi-cam live-switched shoots, I connect each camera to the mixer directly via analog, then output from the mixer (analog) to a digital VTR to record a backup of the live-switch to tape. Then I run a Firewire cable from the VTR to my Mac for live capturing in FCP. The typical cable run from camera-to-switcher on my shoots is about 300'
There is (or use to be) some software available to do what you want, but I cannot recalled the name. Perhaps someone will chime in that remembers better than I do.
