JNDI Tutorial Sun and IBM Directory server v5.1

Hi there guys,
I'm new with JNDI and LDAP but I trying to get the tutorial started with the IBM Directory server v5.1 but with no luck. The tutorial mentions something about root naming contexts. As far as I can find in the docs of the IBM directory server there are no root naming contexts. Am I right? Further when I added the several DN's under the suffixes and I try to restart the server, the server won't start anymore. What I did was adding the following lines as suffixes:
o=JNDITutorial
ou=Groups, o=JNDITutorial
cn=Directory Administrators, ou=Groups, o=JNDITutorial
etc..
Is there someone who had the same problems?
Or are there any suggestions for using another (free) LDAP server?
Hope someone can help.

in suffixes you can only add 'o's ..not ous, cns etc.
For that run a ldif for that o, as an admin to add a tree.
hope this helps.

  • Using Linux/Red Hat/Intel for Sun ONE/Java Directory Server

Anybody have any experience of this? We're looking to get off AIX, and Total Cost of Ownership for using Solaris/Sparc versus Linux/Intel is very similar.
The decider will be if no-one is using Linux as a platform for Sun ONE/Java Directory Server....
    Any feedback would be appreciated....

We run Directory 5.1 in production on Solaris/Sparc, but I've tried it with sucess on Red Hat 7.2 on Intel. We have not been able to get it to work on Red Hat Enterprise 2.1 or 3.0. The main problem has been that the administration server fails on startup. Obvious the lack of support for the latest enterprise class Linux is a huge drawback. At this point I've decided to stay on Solaris/Sparc until Red Hat comes out with its own release of Netscape's Directory. When that happens we're going to evaluate whether to move the whole environment to Red Hat. The Sun and Netscape servers are almost identical in terms of features and performance, but having an open source version that can run on less expensive hardware would be a terrific win for us.

  • Issue w/ Case Differences Using the IBM Directory Server MA

We have the following issue using the IBM Directory Server MA using FIM 2010 R2 (Version 4.1.3479.0).
We provision a new object, e.g., uid=jdoe,ou=users,o=contoso, into an instance of IBM Directory Server
The object is created in IBM Directory Server as uid=jdoe,ou=users,o=contoso
A Full Import on the IBM Directory Server MA runs and confirms the export
Subsequent imports, sync, and exports run successfully
    <Time passes>
A Full Import on the IBM Directory Server MA runs, and this object shows up as a staging-error (uid=jdoe,ou=Users,o=contoso)
Subsequent imports and syncs report errors on this object (staging-error)
Note that we do not manipulate the anchor (DN) of this object once it is created in IBM Directory Server. Other attributes are synchronized, but the object is never renamed/moved. This case change does not happen with all of the objects brought
in during the Full Import, but the number of instances do increase periodically. At this point, it does look like the import is changing from a lowercase "u" to an uppercase "U" but not vice versa.
    I found a related
TechNet article containing the following remark:
"IBM Directory Server does not guarantee that the case of a DN component will match in all instances. On a synchronization or import from IBM Directory Server, this can manifest itself as an unexpected update. For example, if you create
O=TEST, and then create the user cn=MikeDan,O=TEST, this might be imported from IBM Directory Server as
cn=MikeDan,O=test. Because of the case difference, FIM treats this as an update on subsequent full imports."
Unfortunately, the article does not propose a resolution.
Has anyone encountered this issue? More importantly has anyone resolved this or found an acceptable workaround?
Note that deleting the connector space is not an acceptable workaround. :)

I remember experiencing this issue when we were on 5.0, and I believe it persists through 5.1 as well.
There is a comment in the 5.2 release notes that something similar was fixed:
Changing case sensitive attribute values failed in MMR. (4624693)
If I had to take a wild guess, I would say that the server does some internal checking to see if the value has changed, possibly based on the attribute syntax, to avoid replicating "changes" that really don't change anything except case. I doubt that all your custom attributes are case-sensitive, though. Enabling replication probably "turns on" this behavior, which doesn't go away even if replication is disabled.
In any case, you're probably out of luck unless/until you upgrade to 5.2.

  • Newbie: IBM Directory Server LDAP Java Implementation

    Good day friends,
I'm new in developing LDAP applications. I'm using IBM Directory Server v4.1 & need to develop a application (a web application - JSP/Servlet/EJB). I'm doing this as part of a Web project where i need to store the User Info of the registering user to LDAP server with proper Organisational Hierarchy & Privileges. I'm using Java for this application. I have the proper JNDI environment set for LDAP interaction. Can anyone provide me with a best practice/right procedure for implementing this, like searching for an entry, inserting/updating an entry & how to make use of Attributes provided in IBM DS 4.1.
I searched IBM redbook & others for this but without any success. All Prog references are pertaining to C & very minimal info for Java implementation. I found some info in other LDAP like Netscape & Novell, but there structuring is different from IBM DS. I would appreciate if anyone can throw some light on this regard. I would appreciate a complete Java Programmers Reference Guide for IBM Directory Server v4.1.
    Thanking u in anticipation.
    cheers,
    J2EEDev.

I'm coping with the same question as you had.
Did you get any valuable information or a Java programmers reference guide for IBM directory server ?
If so, could you send me an url where I can obtain the required information ?
    Thanks for your reply !

It looks like your archive is corrupted.
I would suggest that you download a new copy, and even better that you use the most recent version of Directory Server (6.2, although it is not yet on the download page -it should be by the end of the week-, 6.1 is available through the Enterprise Edition).
    Regards,
    Ludovic.

  • Installing Sun Java System directory Server 5.2 P4 Patch

    Hi,
While Installing using Sun Java System Directory Server 5.4 P4 patch using install.bat
i am getting error such as "*Cannot find either nsbasesys.zip or nsbasesys.zip.zip*"

    Hi Aswi,
Looking at your [other post|http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5342178&tstart=30] i asume you are installing this patch on Windows?
I haven't got any experience regarding DS on Windows, but looking at the install README i couldn't help noticing this part:
On windows copy d52diu.zip, nsbase.zip and nsbasesys.zip file
                    to the server root.
              - uncompress nsbase.zip file
              - on Windows platforms, uncompress nsbasesys.zip into $SystemRoot/SYSTEM32 directory
                    - In case of Windows platform, uncompress d52diu.zipGood luck!

    Thanks in advance,

Thank you very much. The name of the file is actually C:\WINDOWS\system32\productregistry.
I renamed that to productregistry BACKUP and I can now install the LDAP. Man, I should have posted this a week and a half ago when I first started having this issue. It would have prevented a few forehead dents from banging my head on the keyboard.
    thanks again

  • Differences between SunONE, iPlanet and Netscape Directory Server

What are the differences between SunONE, iPlanet and Netscape Directory Server?
When I go to docs.sun.com - Products Categories, I saw that they've documentation regarding with SunONE, iPlanet, Netscape Directory Server listed under Directory Server.
I know that they're all different directory server, but is it one newer than other? If I'm not wrong, I assumed that Netscape transformed into iPlanet, and then from iPlanet, it transformed to SunONE. If that is the case, is that mean that all of it's console and how it works should be very similar?
    Thanks!

That is exactly what I thought.
so when people refer SunONE Directory Server 5.1, then that's mean iPlanet Directory Server 5.1, right?
Because I'm looking at Solaris 9's specification and it mentioned that it bundled with SunONE Directory Server 5.1.
Thanks for answering my question! :)

  • Sun Java System Directory Server 5.2

    Hi,
We were informed by a third party that we can download Sun Java System Directory Server 5.2 SP 1 from the Sun downloads area. However, we couldn't find 5.2 Service Pack 1. We did find that Directory Server 5 2005Q4 (5.2 patch 4) is the only one available for download.
Is 5.2 patch 4 equivalent to 5.2 Service Pack 4?
Is there such thing as Directory Server 5.2 Service Pack 1?
We saw that 5.1 had multiple Service Packs available for download, will the 5.2 Service Packs be made available for downloading?
    Cheers,
    Cate

Sun has changed the terminology for micro releases from Service Packs (5.1 release) to patched versions (5.2 release).
Therefore Directory Server 5.2 patch4 is the latest update of Directory Server 5.2 release (would have been called Service Pack with the former terminology).
Only the most recent version is available for download from the Sun Downloads site..
But we've never released 5.2patch1, as far as I remember.

  • Can JRE for Sun One Java Directory Server 5.2 be upgraded to JRE 6.0 Update

I am trying to upgrade jre installed with Sun One Java DS 5.2 from 1.5.0 to JRE 6.0 Updat 16. Is this possible?

I never received any feedback on my question.
I am attempting to upgrade our JRE version (installed with Sun One Directory Sever 5.2) from 1.4 to 1.6. I've installed JRE 1.6 Update 16 and set the JAVA_HOME environment variable to d:\programs\java\jre6 and don't know how to configure the directory server to run the 1.6 java version. • Solaris 8 and iPlanet Directory Server 5.1: Help

Could anyone help with advice or where to find documentation of how to setup a Solaris 8 client machine to authenticate against iPlanet Directory Server 5.1? The only documentation (eg books, BluePrint articles) I can find cover iPlanet Directory 4.11 or 4.12 and a Solaris 8 client. Even the tools from the BluePrint Tools area at Sun only talk about using iPlanet Directory Server 4.11/12. Quite a lot seems to have change from iDS 4.12 to iDS5.1.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Stewart

Hi Steven, I suppose that this question is identical to your other question: " Topic: solaris 8 client setup with solaris 9 ldap".
So the answer will be the same.
You may find what you are looking for in the following technical note: http://knowledgebase.iplanet.com/ikb/kb/articles/7966.html
It is called: "Cookbook for Solaris 8 client with Directory Server 5.1/Solaris 9"

  • Difference between Sun and IBM JSSE implementations?

    Hi!
We have an applet done with Sun JDK 1.4.2-03 which has to connect a domino server in SSL mode.
During the handshake the connection breaks down.
The most surpising thing is to use IBM JDK to generate the applet, and the applet works.
So we are thinking that there are some differences between these jdk (and so jre) which makes connections available or not.
Does or did someone have the same problem, and find a solution ?
    Thanks for your help.
